1 Oxnard-Joslyn Lawn Bowls Club, 350 North C Street, Oxnard, CA Winter 2011 President s Message by Joe Brown A new year stretches before us with many challenges, and while some Lawn Bowling Clubs have experienced difficulty in maintaining their numbers, we have been able to steadily attract new members. I attribute our success to members who continuously talk Bowls to their friends and neighbors. While on that note; we need to be mindful of the physical abilities of the potential members. Someone unable to stand for ten minutes and constantly forgets which side of the Bowl gives you a right or left draw; just may not be the right person to recruit. While we have attracted quite a few new members in recent months, and we have lost some as well; most notably, long timers like Ron Zenone, Hans Mehner, Wes & Ann Johnson and Marilyn Taschek. Elections this year produced only one new member to the Board. Teri Komatsu was elected to the Board and subsequently assumed the position as Chairman of the Purchasing Committee; responsible for ensuring our Clubhouse is well stocked with necessary items. Other new Committee Chairpersons includes Haji Cat: Bowls Room, and Ron Creager: Clean-Up. I would like to Thank all our committee members for their efforts in helping to maintain our club in such fine condition. No one person can coordinate the efforts of any enterprise without dedicated people to assist them..again Thank You Committee members. Congratulations to Amador Martinez, who received the semi-annual Appreciation Award at our Christmas Party. The award inception was the brainchild of Sal Mollo, who wanted to recognize members who went above and beyond the call of duty in service to our Club. Bert Kessler was also honored with this award in June for his service to the Club. Our Christmas Party was a big success this year, thanks to Rosalie Hutton and her assistant, Gloria Brown. A former member, Tom Weaver provided dancing music and some vocals for the entertainment and a few members tried a little Karaoke. If the response I ve received is any indication of how well the addition of music and dancing added to the enjoyment of the afternoon.then we may have to do it again. For our Tournament Bowlers, it seems that the Gold Coast League will rise again this year, despite the fact that Santa Barbara LBC will not be able to muster any teams. It primarily falls upon us to field four teams in order to keep the Gold Coast League up and running. To date, we have had more than enough volunteers to fill the void left by clubs unable to rise to the occasion. Until next time wishing you a steady hand, a good eye and Good Bowling! Class is in Session by Armand Escalante (Reprint from Rollin Along, Fall 2003) THE VARIOUS VARIABLES OF LAWN BOWLING People who have never seen or tried lawn bowling have no idea how challenging a sport it can be. It is a sport that is easy to learn but difficult to master. What makes it so is due to the several variables that players must contend with. There are at least five of these. Lets enumerate the five that come to mind: 1. The width you must allow for the bias of your bowl. Not all bowls have the same width of bias. 2. The length of the jack from the front of the mat which will dictate the weight you try to achieve. 3. The position of the jack when it has been moved and forces you to adjust your width and weight. 4. The fact that other bowls may be blocking your path towards the jack. 5. The condition of the green and the rink on which you are playing. This means whether the green is wet, dry, fast, slow, or is undergoing subtle changes caused by the wind or the weather. It also means whether your rink is "true" or has bumps, grooves, heavier grass or dry spots that affect the trajectories of the bowls. Experienced bowlers know that every green and every rink has its own peculiarities. If lawn bowling has all these variables (and it does), there are certain tips that help overcome their challenges. Here are some of them: 1. Learn from your first bowls. Watch the trajectory and final stopping point of your bowl and try to make adjustments with your next bowl or bowls. 2. When you start bowling on one side, stay on that side unless there is a specific reason (such as an opponent's bowl in your path) for changing. 3. When your team does not have the point or points, try not to be short, especially if other members of your team
2 have yet to bowl. 4. Learn how to "read the green" and decide if one side on the way to the jack is more predictable and use it if at all possible. 5. Remember that lawn bowling is supposed to be enjoyable whether you win or lose, but if you want to improve, find your weaknesses, correct them and then practice, practice, practice. Laws of the Sport of Bowls The following excerpts were taken from the winter 2010 edition of the Green Jack. The article is written by Dr Goodwick (alias Conrad Melton) and deals with a few changes that will appear in the new edition of the Laws of the Sport of Bowls. The new rule book is expected to become effective as close as possible to January 1 st. It is expected that all USLBA members will have their own copy before the end of January. 1. The hammer rule is dead and gone. Whoever wins the end must roll the jack. 2. The "one minute rule" will be an option for Controlling Body s to invoke or not as a Condition of Play. 3. In team games, the skips will be responsible for keeping the scorecards, not the second. 4. Cell phones and other noise emitting electronic devices are punishable by death. Just kidding, but it is a violation of possession of the rink if another player can hear noise (or music, or whatever) coming from your equipment. (I thought this was a rather colorful description) SWD Men & Women Vet-Novice Pairs On November 7, 2010, ten teams competed in the event at Mackenzie Park LBC. The teams were: Vince Sepich & Mike Newton, Agnes Goodmanson & Dale Goodmanson, Jose Rodriguez & Armand Escalante, Teri Komatsu & Joe Brown, Sherry Creager & Amador Martinez, Ron Creager & Gloria Brown, Tom Miller & Barry Pickup, Denny Ryan & Jim Morton, John Op de Coul & Jim Wilkes, Gregg Schrott & Dick Gibson. Fifteen of the Bowlers were from Oxnard LBC and we carried the day, winning the first four places in the tournament. Amador & Sherry took first place by winning all four games, next came Joe & Teri who won three games, as did Armand & Jose and Gloria & Ron. The points made the difference and determined second, third and fourth place. Prizes were awarded for first, second and third place in addition to a commemorative medal to wear around the neck. Although it was a Brown Bag affair, Mackenzie provided ample snacks and refreshments and a great venue to indoctrinate the Novices in the world of competitive Bowling. Well done to all our novices and hope to see you in more competitive events. by Joe Brown Honor the Laws of the Sport of Bowls They make the game the same wherever you go. Super Shots Club Club members on a super shot team in the past three months were: Mike Newton, Amador Martinez, J.W. Wilkes, Dick Gibson, Carol Smith, Teri Komatsu, Mike Basler, Sharon Gibson, Pauline Escalante, Gloria Brown, Ray Anderson, Bert Kessler, Joe Brown, Jerry Overmyer, Sunny Glessner, Ron Creager, Jules Bilodeau and Sal Mollo. Members submitting a form to USLBA Super Shots should also add the team names on the bulletin board list. 1st place: Amador Martinez & Sherry Creager Newsletter History In 2003 Dave Jones was our President. He was interested in starting up a newsletter for the club and recruited Joseph Whittaker, one of our members to be our editor. Dave had a favorite music CD called Rollin Along and since the name fit he decided to use it as our Newsletter Masthead. Rollin Along Page 2 Winter 2011
3 Conrad Bilodeau Conrad and Margaret, wedding in 1959 and present day. I was born in Manchester New Hampshire on March 2, 1930 to Oscar and Angelina Bilodeau. My parents were from Canada and migrated to the U.S.A. in the mid 1920's. My family consisted of one sister and two brothers. I enlisted in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean conflict and flew on B29s and B26s as a gunner. I served in Africa, Japan and Korea. After my discharge in 1955, I went to an aircraft school to become a licensed aircraft mechanic. I worked for Western Airline and Delta Airline and retired in I moved to Glendale, California soon after my discharge where I met Margaret Gerace, the love of my life and got married in We have three children, two boys and a girl. We have five grand daughters, two grandsons, and one great grandson. We now live in Camarillo enjoying our retirement. by Conrad Bilodeau This Quarter s Club Events Nov 3, Mixed Pairs Tournament, On a very warm November day 7 teams of pairs competed. 1st place: Armand Escalante, Dixie Tennow and Haji Cat shared. 2nd place: Joe Brown and Sybil 3 rd place: Doug Dow and Teri Komatsu The other teams were JW Wilkes & Gloria Brown, Dick and Sharon Gibson, Jerry Overmyer & Doris Hughes, Sal Mollo & Pinky Palladino. Since there were 7 teams it created a bye which allowed for a win plus 5 points 1st place: Dixie, Armand and Haji Nov 10, Visitation, Oxnard at Friendly Valley. It was a beautiful clear sunny day with moderate temperatures and a gentle breeze. Oxnard arrived with 12 members to match Friendly Valley that had 9 bowlers on this day. We set up three triple games and a cutthroat made up of Carol Smith and Dick and Sharon Gibson. We played a 12 end game in the morning and Oxnard won 2 games and gave up the 3rd game by a narrow margin. After our brown bag lunch we had a 10 end game made up of mixed players from each club and had two triple and two double games. All Oxnard members stayed to play after lunch and it gave us a good opportunity to get to know each other better. Oxnard teams were: David Rankin-Gloria Brown-Jose Rodriquez Sandy Rankin-Sal Mollo-Teri Komatsu Joe Brown-Bob Smith-Marie Moore Conrad by B-26 in 1953 Membership The club would like to welcome our new members Jim Towar, Alan and Jackie Whitehead and Tory and Le Ann Smith. Wishing you good bowls and happy days on the green. We lost a number of our members this year for various reasons so we need to keep our eyes open for recruiting opportunities. 4 Dec 16, Annual Christmas Party, The club held its annual Christmas Party on December 16 at the Wedgewood Banquet Center in Ventura. Approximately 38 members, family and guests attended. Our thanks go to Rosalie Hutton for making the arrangements with the Banquet Center. Joe and Gloria Brown arranged for Tom Weaver (one of our past members) to provide music and entertainment for the party. Members were invited to come up and sing for us. Joe Brown took him up on the invitation as did Doug Dow and quite spontaneously J.W. Wilkes stood up in the audiance and sang us a song. You never know who has a special talent. Dancing was also available and quite a few got up and strutted their stuff. There was also a drawing for three cash door prizes. The winners were Emiko Jackson, Sharon Anderson and Dixie Tennow. Better luck next time guys. There were also two presentations made: Amador Martinez received a certificate of appreciation for all he has done for the club. His name is also entered on a perputual plaque kept in the club. Joe and Gloria Brown received a certificate of appreciation presented by the Board members for all they have done for the club this past year. Jan 6, Hog line change: Amador Martinez and Bob Smith reset the hog line length all around the green to the shorter distance to conform to the new rules. Jan 14, Birthday celebration: At our General Meeting the club helped Edith Dowsing celebrate her 95th birthday with a song and birthday cake. Jan 17, Vet-Novice Pairs Tournament, Open to all novice and veteran bowlers. Teams had to have one veteran and one novice player, mixed or matched. Three 10-end games. Winner determined by wins and plus points with a 10 point cap. If there is a tie after three games the winner will be determined by total points. 14 teams made up of 31 players were entered. Teams made up by luck of the draw. The first three places are as follows: 1st Raul Perez & John Op de Coul 3 W + 30 Total (43) 2nd Sandy Rankin & Tory Smith 3 W + 30 Total (33) 3rd Joe Brown & Earl Watz 3 W + 24 points The Poet s Corner So Much to Enjoy Win or lose without shame? It s all in how you see the game. Wrong bias or wrong weight is bait For shame and to surely irritate. So shrug it off and enjoy the game. Forget the who or what s to blame. Psychology of Bowling by Robert W. Ferris Bowls is a science, the study of a lifetime. It is a contest calling for courage, skill, strategy, and self control. It is a test of temper, a trial of honor, and a revealer of character, it affords the chance to play the man an act like a gentleman. It offers the opportunity of going into the great outdoors, getting close to nature with lots of fresh air and exercise,it is a cure for care plus an antidote for worry. Besides promoting good health, it includes companionship with friends, social activities in the bowling clubs together with opportunities for courtesy, kindness and generosity to an opponent. If this is not a sport of the highest and best order... what is? Author Unknown Caring Report We are sorry to report Janet Kessler is being treated for breast cancer. Her first surgery was not successful and on Thursday January 20 she underwent a second surgery. She will get the results from her doctor on January 25. Hopefully all the cancer is gone. She is still tired but hopes to come visit us soon. Bert Kessler is still recovering from the fall he took late last year. He is living at the Glenwood Care Facility. He is receiving physical therapy on his legs which are still paralyzed. He also has occupational therapy for his hands and arms. There is a possibility of surgery in February if he is strong enough. He would be glad to have visitors. by Carol Smith 1st place: Raul Perez and John Op de Coul Don t you just hate bowling on a windy day? Rollin Along Page 4 Winter 2011
