With 21 meetings to date, Appalachian State represents one of Wake Forest s longest-running nonconference rivals. Only Davidson and South Carolina have played more games against the Deacs with 33 matchups each. All-time Wake Forest holds a stellar record against the Mountaineers. LAST TIME OUT Wake Forest posted its first shutout of the 2016 season on Saturday night, Sept. 3, against Cleveland State. Goalkeeper Andreu Cases Mundet made two saves in the win and the Wake Forest defense thwarted multiple Cleveland State opportunities at the edge of the penalty area to keep the Vikings off the scoreboard. Jacori Hayes notched the game-winning goal against the Vikings in the 17th minute. The goal is the first of the season and eighth of his career after scoring five in Brad Dunwell sent a ball from midfield to Alex Knox, who was on the right sideline making a run toward the endline. Knox crossed to the left side of goal with three Demon Deacons breaking toward goal and Hayes got his head on the Knox cross to put the game-winner home. The tally in the 17th minute marked the first time this season Wake Forest has scored the first goal of the game. In both matches last weekend against Saint Louis and Cal Poly, the Deacs gave up the first goal of the game. SCOUTING THE MOUNTAINEERS Yet to play a home game thus far, Appalachian State is 0-2 on the young season with losses to Bowling Green and East Tennessee State. The Mountaineers season opener on Aug. 26 at Cincinnati was postponed due to severe weather. Jordan Melia is the only Mountaineer to have scored yet this season. He notched a goal in the third minute against Bowling Green, but the Falcons scored two first-half goals and added another in the second half to pull away from ASU. Appalachian State head coach Jason O Keefe has plenty of ACC ties, including a tie to Wake Forest and the Deacs head coach Bobby Muuss. On Sept. 3 vs. Cleveland State, his 17th-minute tally ultimately proved to be the difference in Wake Forest s 1-0 win. The strike provided Hayes with the sixth game-winner of his career. In his career, Hayes has scored eight goals as a Demon Deacon with a career-best five coming in Each goal in his first two seasons were not game-winners, meaning each of his last six goals have lifted the Deacs to victory. His five game-winners in 2015 came against Santa Clara, South Carolina, North Carolina and Louisville in back-to-back games at the end of the regular season and in the ACC Tournament quarterfinals. TALLYING EARLY In each of Wake Forest s last two games, the Demon Deacons have scored their first goal in the first 20 minutes of play. On Aug. 28 vs. Cal Poly, Steven Echevarria scored in the 20th minute to tie the game at 1-1 after the Mustangs scored first in the 12th minute. Last time out against Cleveland State, Jacori Hayes notched the game s only goal in the 17th minute on a header near the left post after a cross from Alex Knox. The third Wake Forest goal thus far this season came courtesy of Ema Twumasi s bicycle kick with 1.9 seconds left in the first half against Cal Poly, meaning Wake Forest has scored all three of its goals this season in the first half of play. NATIONAL RANKINGS Wake Forest started the season ranked No. 5 in both the NSCAA and College Soccer News polls. The Deacs were also No. 7 in Soccer America and No. 11 in Top Drawer Soccer. After taking an opening night loss to Saint Louis, Wake Forest fell to No. 9 in CSN, No. 20 in Soccer America, No. 21 in NSCAA and No. 23 in Top Drawer Soccer. This week, Wake Forest dropped out of the Top Drawer Soccer poll on Monday and fell one spot to No. 10 in College Soccer News. The NSCAA and Soccer America polls are released on Tuesdays. PRESEASON ACC POLL Wake Forest was picked to finish second in the ACC s Atlantic Division after garnering 62 votes and six first-place votes. The Deacs were edged by Clemson, who picked up 66 points and six first-place votes. In the overall picture, North Carolina was selected to win the title this season with five votes. Clemson earned three overall title votes while Notre Dame earned two. Both Wake Forest and Virginia picked up one apiece. LOOKING FOR A REPEAT PERFORMANCE The Demon Deacons are coming off a regular season in ACC play. The unbeaten record marked just the third unblemished mark in conference play in program history. Along the way, Wake Forest picked up the ACC regular-season title on the final day of the season. With a 4-2 win at Louisville and a scoreless draw for North Carolina at Virginia, Wake Forest completed the season as the ACC s regular-season champs. The title marked the sixth regular season title in program history, but Wake Forest dropped a tough 1-0 contest against Notre Dame in the ACC semifinals in November. MEETING THE NEW DEACS Wake Forest welcomed 10 new faces to the fold this offseason, replacing departed seniors Michael Gamble, Philip Parker and Andrew Harris. The recruiting class was ranked No. 6 in the country by College Soccer News and eighthbest according to Top Drawer Soccer. The class features Gatorade Boy s Players of the Year in Michael DeShields (Maryland) and Ema Twumasi (Connecticut). The Deacs also picked up a transfer in Luis Argudo. He played his first two seasons of college soccer at Elon before transferring to Wake Forest. He has played in all three games thus far. Wake Forest s youth has already made an impact this season. Alex Knox and Andreu Cases Mundet have started each of the first three games for the Deacs this season while Bruno Lapa and Ema Twumasi have come off the bench in each game to date. Lapa and Twumasi combined with sophomore Sam Raben to give Wake Forest the win against Cal Poly on Aug. 28, as Lapa took the corner kick that Raben headed over to Twumasi when he scored with 1.9 seconds to go in the first half. Not only did the rookie s bicycle kick goal seal the Wake Forest win, but it also made SportsCenter s Top 10 Plays of the Night at No. 5. NEW MAN ON THE BENCH Mick Giordano joined the Demon Deacons as an assistant coach in May. He replaces Eder Quintanilla, who left to join the San Jose Earthquakes Academy coaching staff. Giordano played at Greensboro College in 2009 before transferring to Charlotte. He then sat out the 2011 season due to transfer rules before playing in 2013 and 2014 at UNC Asheville. Ferrell was rated one of the Top 10 goalkeepers in the country while Hayes and Harkes picked up Top 10 midfielder honors. At least one ACC team has made the College Cup each of the last 14 years. With Boston College taking on Syracuse in the Elite Eight, the conference is guaranteed at least one ACC team in the College Cup for the 15th straight season. An ACC team has won the championship 17 times, including 7 of the last 10 titles overall. Four ACC teams advanced to the Elite Eight. Wake Forest, Clemson and Syracuse all won while Boston College upset Georgetown in PKs. Notre Dame fell to Maryland while North Carolina dropped a 1-0 decision to Creighton. LOOKING AT THE SLATE The Demon Deacons four ACC road contests mark four of the toughest games of the season. Wake Forest s first road game of the year will come at Duke. The other three road ACC games are at Clemson, Notre Dame and Syracuse. Both Syracuse and Clemson went to the College Cup last year and Notre Dame was a mainstay in the Top 10 throughout the season. Throughout the season, Wake Forest will take on three teams that are the program s most common nonconference opponents in South Carolina (33 games), Davidson (33 games) and Appalachian State (21 games). On the flip side, the other six nonconference foes have combined to play just 10 previous games against Wake Forest over the years. The Aug. 28 game agianst Cal Poly marked the first meeting for the two programs as Wake Forest won 2-1. GREENSFELDER S LATE DEBUT Senior Ricky Greensfelder was not available for Wake Forest on Aug. 26 against Saint Louis. He received a red card at the conclusion of the Stanford/Wake Forest game in the Elite Eight at the end of the 2015 season and the one-game suspension carried over to the first game of He made his 2016 debut Aug. 28 against Cal Poly.
