NO. 3 STANFORD THE MATCHUP Top-ranked and No. 1 seeded Wake Forest is set for a showdown against No. 3 Stanford for the third-straight NCAA Tournament. The Demon Deacons and Cardinal play at Spry Stadium at 7 p.m. on Saturday on ESPN3. LAST TIME OUT Wake Forest clinched a berth in the quarterfinal by defeating No. 19 Butler, 2-0, on Sunday evening. Brandon Servania scored for the first time since opening night with an upper-90 strike in the 52nd minute. Jon Bakero added a late insurance goal, with Ema Twumasi assisting on both goals. Andreu Cases Mundet recorded his 12th shutout in goal, one shy of the program record. The clean sheet was his third in a row, giving the Deacs their third shutout streak of at least 300 minutes this season. Wake Forest has conceded just one goal over the last 10 games. WAKE FOREST STORYLINES A total of eight Deacs were recognized in the ACC postseason awards. Jon Bakero (Offensive Player of the Year), Kevin Politz (Defensive Player of the Year) and Bobby Muuss (Coach of the Year) led the way. Bakero was also just named a semifinalist for the MAC Hermann Trophy, which recognizes the top player in college soccer. Wake Forest wrapped up its second undefeated ACC schedule in three years under head coach Bobby Muuss. The Deacs went in 2015 and in Wake Forest became the first team to finish the ACC regular season and tournament undefeated en route ot the ACC Championship since Duke in The Deacs have the most prolific offense in the nation. Wake Forest leads the country with 58 goals, 182 points and 66 assists. Six Demon Deacons have totaled at least 10 points: Jon Bakero (46 pts - 16g, 14a), Ema Twumsai (27 pts - 10g, 7a), Luis Argudo (22 pts - 8g, 6a), Omir Fernandez (17 pts - 6g, 5a), Brandon Servania (17 pts - 3g, 11a) and Steven Echevarria (11 pts - 4g, 3a). Bakero leads the nation in points and is second in goals and assists. OPPONENT AND SERIES HISTORY Wake Forest is looking for its first-ever win over Stanford, trailing in the all-time series. The Demon Deacons earned the top overall seed for the fifth time in program history and the second time in the past three seasons. Wake Forest is 8-2 in the NCAA Tournament under head coach Bobby Muuss, going 2-1 during a 2015 Elite Eight run and 4-1 in a runner-up finish last year. The Deacs have a overall record in the NCAA Tournament, as well as a record in Winston-Salem and a mark in the third round. ALL-ACC GALORE Wake Forest racked up All-ACC honors when the league announced postseason awards - voted on by the league head coaches. The Demon Deacons earned three of the yearly awards. Jon Bakero was named the Offensive Player of the Year, Kevin Politz was named the Defensive Player of the Year and Bobby Muuss was picked as the Coach of the Year. Muuss is the first coach in the league s history to earn the honor three-straight seasons. Bakero was joined as a first team All-ACC selection by midfielder Ema Twumasi, while Politz was picked to the second team. Luis Argudo and Brad Dunwell were third team honorees. Omir Fernandez and Brandon Servania were named to the All-Freshman Team. ACC SUCCESS Wake Forest was the only unbeaten team in ACC play. The Deacs handed Louisville and North Carolina their lone conference defeats. The Deacs scored 20 goals in eight ACC games, five more than any other program. Wake Forest s +16 goal differential in conference play is also best in the league, six more than second-place North Carolina (+10). Thirty-three of the 48 ACC games played were decided by a goal or less. Wake Forest has five of the 15 wins decided by multiple goals. SPRY S ARMY Spry Stadium has proven to be an unkind venue for opponents since opening in In the 22nd season hosting Wake Forest soccer, the Deacs are inside the friendly confines. STEERING THE SHIP Head coach Bobby Muuss got off to the best start for a coach in program history. Over his first 50 games, Wake Forest went in those contests. It added up to a winning percentage of.813. For comparison, George Kennedy s first 50 games from had the Deacs at (.570), Walt Chyzowych from went (.420) and Jay Vidovich from went (.560). Muuss also owns an record through his first 24 games as a coach in regular-season ACC play with the only loss coming against Clemson last season. Previous Wake Forest coaches did not have as much success early in their ACC careers as Kennedy went through his first 24 ACC games, Chyzowych and Vidovich WAKE FOREST IN ACC PLAY With a win on Sept. 16, 2016 at Duke, Wake Forest moved above the.500 mark all-time in ACC play for the first time. Since the start of the 2006 season, Wake Forest has posted a record. Prior to the 2006 season, Wake Forest went over 26 seasons in conference play.
