NO. 17 VIRGINIA THE MATCHUP Top-ranked and No. 1 seeded Wake Forest plays in its second-straight ACC Championship game on Sunday at noon, taking on sixth-seeded and No. 17-ranked Virginia on ESPNU. LAST TIME OUT The Demon Deacons and the fifth-ranked Clemson Tigers had another back-and-forth affair. After Omir Fernandez found the back of the net in the first half, Clemson tied it up in the 70th minute. That set the stage for more Jon Bakero heroics as he netted his fifth game-winner of the season. Four of those have come in the second half or overtime of a tie game: 9/19 vs. High Point in double OT, 10/6 at North Carolina in 66th minute, 10/14 vs. Virginia Tech in 49th minute and 11/8 vs. Clemson in 79th minute. He also had the game-winner in the second round of the ACC Tournament against the Hokies in the second minute. WAKE FOREST STORYLINES A total of eight Deacs were recognized in the ACC postseason awards Tuesday. Jon Bakero (Offensive Player of the Year), Kevin Politz (Defensive Player of the Year) and Bobby Muuss (Coach of the Year) led the way. Wake Forest wrapped up its second undefeated ACC schedule in three years under head coach Bobby Muuss. The Deacs went in 2015 and in The last team to finish the ACC regular season and tournament undefeated was Duke in 1999, and the Deacs are playing in back-to-back finals for the first time since The Demon Deacons have one of the most prolific offenses in the nation to date this season. Wake Forest ranks atop the nation with 55 goals, 174 points and 64 assists. Last year, the Deacs finished with 36 goals scored in 25 games. Wake Forest surpassed that total in 13 games this year. Six Demon Deacons have already totaled at least 10 points after four did so all last year: Jon Bakero (42 pts - 14g, 14a), Ema Twumsai (25 pts - 10g, 5a), Luis Argudo (22 pts - 8g, 6a), Omir Fernandez (17 pts - 6g, 5a), Brandon Servania (15 pts - 2g, 11a) and Steven Echevarria (11 pts - 4g, 3a). The Demon Deacons earned three of the yearly awards. Jon Bakero was named the Offensive Player of the Year, Kevin Politz was named the Defensive Player of the Year and Bobby Muuss was picked as the Coach of the Year. Muuss is the first coach in the league s history to earn the honor three-straight seasons. Bakero was joined as a first team All-ACC selection by midfielder Ema Twumasi, while Politz was picked to the second team. Luis Argudo and Brad Dunwell were third team honorees. Omir Fernandez and Brandon Servania were named to the All-Freshman Team. A FAMILIAR FOE Though Wake Forest and Virginia haven t met yet in 2017, the Cavaliers are the most common foe for the Deacs in the ACC Tournament. Virginia is also the only team Wake Forest has played in the ACC Tournament and not defeated, with the Deacs holding an record all-time. Out of the four draws, Virginia advanced in PKs three of the four times. The last eight losses have all come by one goal, including four in overtime. The teams have not yet met in the postseason in the Bobby Muuss era. Wake Forest has won the last two regular season meetings, coming in 2016 and ACC SUCCESS Wake Forest was the only unbeaten team in ACC play. The Deacs handed Louisville and North Carolina their lone conference defeats. The Deacs scored 20 goals in eight ACC games, five more than any other program. Wake Forest s +16 goal differential in conference play is also best in the league, six more than second-place North Carolina (+10).
