2 Two online registration sessions offered for the season! The season JUST ended so why are we already discussing registration for the season? While MYHA continues to do all we can to make hockey an affordable activity for all families, we understand that registration fees, along with all the other back-to-school costs, can add up quickly. MYHA wants to offer families as many options as possible to make it easier to pay for your child s hockey season. So in addition to no increased fees for the season, we are offering an Early-Bird registration with some easier payment options. Early-Bird is NOW OPEN! If you register online by June 30 th, 2015, you will be given the option to pay in FIVE equal installments! If you choose this option the payment breakdown will be: 20% at the time of registration (between June 1 and June 30) 20% on July 15 th 20% on August 15 th 20% on September 15 th 20% on October 15 th (final payment) **All online payments do require a $5 processing fee per transaction *Early-Bird registration will close on June 30 th!!! The regular online registration session will open up on August 1 st, Payment plan options will be the same as the season: 50% at the time of registration 25% on September 15 th 25% on October 15 th (final payment) **All online payments do require a $5 processing fee per transaction For both registration sessions, you will also have the option to pay in full online or pay offline, with the understanding that offline payments will be due in full by October 15 th, Remember, you MUST register online with USA Hockey BEFORE you can complete Moorhead Youth Hockey s online registration. USA Hockey s registration opens on April 1 st for the season. Families whose registration will exceed the family max amount of $860 and who wish to utilize the payment plan will need to call Julie at the office BEFORE registering to get their discount code.

3 With Sympathy Moorhead Youth Hockey extends our deepest symapthies to the family of Chuck Mjoen. Chuck passed away on April 25th, 2015 at 80 years of age. Chuck was the grandfather to MHS standout senior hockey player and former MYHA alum, Will Borgen. Chuck s family asked that donations be made to MYHA in lieu of flowers. Over $1,400 has been donated to MYHA and will be used to purchase any needed goalie equipment. We thank the Mjoen family for considering us during this difficult time, and are honored to accept donations in Chuck s name. Thank you to Hiram Sirjord For the past nearly 15 years you may have noticed a quiet, older gentleman working around the arena during the day. His blue Chevy adorned with Moorhead Hockey decals was dutifully parked along the building every morning. His handyman skills were put to use for anything from cleaning the bathrooms to taking down and putting up signage. Hiram gracefully submitted his resignation on Friday, May 29th. His kind face and love for sweets will be missed around the arena, but we know he will enjoy the added time he will have to spend with Harriett and his children and grand-children! Thank you, Hiram, & Best Wishes from all of us at Moorhead Youth Hockey! DISTRICT 15 GIRLS HIGH PERFORMANCE 14/15 (Girls born in 2001 and 2002) ALL female hockey players residing in District 15 and born in the year 2001 or 2002 are eligible to try out for the CCM High Performance 14/15 program. For Details, see the District 15 Website Fall HP 14/15 Girls Page, or contact District 15 Girls Coordinator, Chris Robinson, Mobile: (218) Note: Training begins on Sunday, August 30th at the Essentia Health Sports Center in Brainerd (with subsequent sessions in Moorhead and Alexandria).

4 Help us "Reforest the Red" and give back to our community! June 5th from 1-4 pm Moorhead Youth Hockey has been the benefactor of tremendous support from our community for decades. We would like to "give back" and show the City of Moorhead, its residents and business owners that we value their support and are here to support them as well. MYHA will take part in several community events in the upcoming year. Please consider joining other MYHA members in participating in these events and display how we value community strength and pride. Your participation is highly appreciated! The first event is on Friday, June 5th from 1-4pm and is in conjunction with River Keepers, "a nonprofit organization established in 1990 to protect and preserve the integrity and natural environment of the Red River of the North in the Fargo, ND - Moorhead, MN area" (taken from Event: "Reforest the Red" - a project intended to improve bank stability, improve water quality, provide suitable habitat for the river wildlife, provide shade, and improve air quality as well as creating additional recreation opportunities and reducing crime rates. Location: S Rivershore Drive in Moorhead between 24th Ave S and the Interstate Sign Up: To register for this project go to our website Please register by the end of the day on June 1st for the June 5th tree planting event so we can provide River Keepers with a head count for supplies. For questions on this and other upcoming community service projects, please contact Rob Gramer, MYHA Executive Director, at rob@moorheadyouthhockey.com. The MYHA 10,000 Puck Challenge is back! The MYHA Hockey Committee is encouraging 12U/PW and 14U/Bantam MYHA players to participate in our 10,000 puck challenge this summer. This program consists of stick handling, shooting development and goalie development programs to form our 10,000 Puck Challenge. The players will be asked to commit themselves to attending 10 sessions of training at the Moorhead Youth Hockey Rink as well as putting in the extra time at home or at the rink to meet the requirements of our 10,000 Puck Challenge. 7 The Making of an Elite Athlete By Jessi Pierce, Touchpoint Media What makes a player elite? Is it slick skating ability? Saucer passes through traffic? A booming shot from the point? Those skills definitely help, but none of them vault an athlete directly into elite status. What separates the Parises and McDonaghs from the rest isn t just their on-ice ability. It s the attitude and character they demonstrate on and off the ice. Work ethic, competitiveness, a student of the game, mental toughness the list of elite attributes goes on, said Minnesota State assistant coach Darren Blue, who has coached his fair share of top-notch players, including St. Louis Blues captain David Backes. Elite players have a knack for not focusing on becoming elite, but for doing all of the little things to the best of their ability, and they do it all with a huge passion for the game. Along with an elite player s in-game ability comes a specific set of traits: Not Afraid to Fail Michael Jordan s legendary career wasn t without missed shots and games lost. Those letdowns helped shape him. To quote Jordan: I ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed. Elite athletes aren t afraid to fail. In fact, it drives them. It s how you overcome that failure that makes the difference. There s an element of mental toughness in hockey, said Blue. It s a game that s all about adversity and dealing with it. I think elite players are able to deal with adversity better because they turn it around to help them. They are better because of their mistakes and the things that didn t go right. They excel at moments when things go wrong and learn from it to become a better player. There are plenty of ways to overcome a disappointing blow. The best way is to get back up and try again. Self-Starters You won t hear any moans and groans from an elite player when asked to go through a drill again or to be at the rink at 5 a.m. Most of them find it within themselves to get started before the rest do anyway. They are self-evaluators, Blue explains. They know what they need to work on to become a better player. It s easy to work on things that you re the best at. The true elite players continue to work on the things that they struggle at. They can motivate themselves to find areas that need improvement and continue to work on that. Elite hockey players and athletes are self-motivators. They push, learn and improve because they have the drive to do so. They don t fuel themselves solely off what a parent or coach is directing them to do. Instead, they fuel themselves with their own motivation. Leadership Elite athletes have a noticeable presence on and off the ice. It s a reason why many of them have the letter C sewed on their sweater. But elite players know that being the captain and taking charge of the team isn t about them it s about everyone else. When I talk about leadership, I talk about somebody who continually makes someone better, said Blue. Someone who shows up with a team-first attitude and a respect for other guys. True leaders are happy when their teammates are successful. They re most happy with the success of the team and the success of others. A team is only as strong as its leader. Elite players lead by example and do their very best for the good of the team on and off the ice. For Love of the Game Elite players love the game, plain and simple. They love it, and they respect it. That passion allows them to reach their potential. They are never forced to hit the ice. Odds are they are the first ones there and the last ones to leave. For them, the game is still fun, and they remember that every time they step onto the ice. If you re not having fun and you re not enjoying what you re doing, it s not going to be easy to show up to the rink, said Blue. An elite player will show up and enjoy what they are doing and bring that energy every single day, every single drill and every single shift. They enjoy the little things that other players don t and have fun with it. They find fun in what they re doing and enjoyment by just being at the rink. They enjoy trying to be a better hockey player every day. Being elite should never remove the most important element of sports: fun. Athletes who compete with a high sense of enjoyment will have unlocked the biggest secret to being elite. Jeremy Gregoire, Hockey Director
