This is sometimes a touchy subject because many believe that this is a push toward year round specialization. That is not the case at all. One of the unique opportunities that we offer in community based hockey is the opportunity to participate in many different activities. same time, at this time of the year, many are overwhelmed with the different opportunities that are offered. In Moorhead there are a number of outstanding opportunities for young student-athletes to improve as athletes. Even so, with the factors of time and cost, it may not be feasible to commit to everything. As a result, here is a simple chart that might lay out some of the benefits and drawbacks of specific programs for your son or daughter. Baseball, Golf, Swimming, Soccer, Football, Lacrosse, etc. Camps based on the development of fundamental skills (skating, shooting, stickhandling) Travel Hockey focusing on participation in games and tournaments Programs that focus on increasing overall strength and athleticism of individual Shooting of pucks and stickhandling circuits Increases athletic ability Focus on skills that help in overall success of individuals and as a result, team Opportunity to play games Opportunity to meet players from other areas Opportunity to focus on the development of strength and athleticism Cost effective Opportunity to improve with small focused time commitments. None Cost, ice time, coaching and focus might help decipher between different offerings Cost-Hotels travel can add up. Games don t provide best opportunity to improve fundamentals. (make sure program pays attention to skill development coupled with games) Sport specific training at a young age can be misguided. (Programs that are focused on development of athleticism are most beneficial). None Jon Ammerman Moorhead High School Boys Hockey
2 NOMINATIONS FOR BOARD OF DIRECTORS The MYHA Board of Directors has three (3) directors whose terms are ending soon. These positions will be filled by an election of the membership at our Annual Meeting, which will be held on Monday, May 5, At this time we are seeking nominations to fill these vacancies. The specific duties of these directors will be determined after they are elected to the Board. In order to receive the support of the nominating committee, the nominee must be willing to serve. This is an important consideration for the nominee and the nominee's family, as serving on the MYHA Board represents a commitment of time. Each member of MYHA has something to offer the Association, and serving on the Board is not something that should be decided on a whim. Attendance at the Board meetings and representing the membership is a large part of a director's duties. Other duties include delegating responsibilities to others to get projects completed, working with committee chair persons, and planning ahead to assure that MYHA will be a strong association in the future. Serving on the Board of Directors can be extremely rewarding. The nominating committee urges you to give consideration to becoming a candidate. If you are interested in being considered as a candidate, or if you have any questions about the Board or the nomination and election process, please contact one of the following individuals from our Nominating Committee: Brian Stavenger Stephanie Gess (701) (218) bstavenger@eidebailly.com gcsgess@yahoo.com If you are not interested in becoming a candidate for the Board of Directors, do consider seeking or accepting another leadership role in MYHA. While not everyone can serve on the Board of Directors, there is ample opportunity for everyone's involvement in this great organization. Thank you for your consideration and involvement! Information related to the Annual Meeting will be mailed to the membership in early April. Watch for dates, along with candidate biographies at that time.
3 Reminder to NOT leave hockey bags, sticks, etc. at the MYHA Arena overnight. The Arena and Office Staff are NOT responsible for items that are left unattended, lost, stolen or missing. This procedure will help maintain the cleanliness of the Arena, the Locker Rooms as well as allow the Arena Staff to properly clean. Thank you! Rookie, Mites, 8 U Many trophies are left for those who were unable to attend the banquet. Please stop in the office to pick yours up. ****Coaches/Parent Coordinators**** If you have not turned in your scorebooks and/or team folders to the office, please do so as soon as possible. Thanks!! Grizzlies Newz: Thank you for all the donations of equipment so far and for all the volunteers that come out every Sunday to help!! We are still in need of gloves and elbow pads if anyone has any to donate. Also, anyone that would like to volunteer to help with the team can contact Jackie Beedy at or jlbeedy@gmail.com. If any MYHA team would like to scrimmage us on a Sunday, please contact Jackie. Practice nights for each level: Rookies: Wednesday evenings Mites: Tuesday and Friday evenings Squirts In-house: Monday and Thursday evenings 8U/10U: Monday and Thursday evenings Squirt Travel/Peewees/12U s/bantams: Varies DIDJA KNOW. THE AVERAGE NHL GAME USES A DOZEN PUCKS? Players are required to use frozen pucks which are easier to control than unaltered pucks, but these tend to thaw quickly. Thus, they re constantly replaced by officials and an average of 12 come into play per game, although as many as 22 have been recorded. (The last NHP game to use only a single puck-which is currently on display in the Hockey Hall of Fame was in 1979). Today is an exciting time to be a part of Moorhead Hockey!! Through the hard work and dedication of many, Moorhead Hockey has become a leader in the State of Hockey. For the past fifty years a countless number of individuals have contributed to the program on and off the ice. The framework for a celebration in January of 2015 has started to take shape, and we are looking for volunteers to step forward and help make the event a celebration of all involved. We hope you will consider using your talents to make our 50th an amazing event! If you are interested, please contact the MYHA office. ARENA NEWS As the hockey season ends I would like to thank all the volunteers for helping around the arena this past winter. Your help cleaning around the rink and helping in the concession stand was much appreciated. Individuals who did plumbing and electrical work were also appreciated. Many people did volunteer things too numerous to mention names. Again thanks a lot, we couldn t do it without you! We have taken out the ice on the north rink and have laid turf for the spring months ahead. So far soccer, lacrosse, baseball, and Joel s FP3 have used the facility. We will take the turf back out the middle of May and put the ice back in for summer camps and tournaments. We will remove the ice on the north rink the end of June and lay the turf back in for the summer. The south rink ice will be taken out April 1st. There will be no open hockey after this week (March 28th). We will have lots of work to do on both rinks when ice is out. If you have any questions on the use of the facility when ice is out, give me a call. Until then, have a great spring, summer and fall and look forward to the next hockey season. Thanks again, Denny
