I hope you are all enjoying spring as we have turned the page from a great hockey season! This becomes a time of reviewing and planning for the Board, the staff and me. In addition to our annual meeting, election of new board members, and monthly board meetings, there are many other committee meetings to ensure we build upon the things we do well and develop new ideas that will help us grow and improve. Here are a few highlights from this past year and things to look forward to: Executive Committee This past year we were able to make great progress with community leaders and key stakeholders in our add ice initiative. The biggest focus with the Executive Committee for the upcoming year will be to continue to make progress on short and long terms solutions for our ice needs. Tournament Committee This past year we were able to implement a new tournament work policy that simplified our volunteer requirement on members and helped ensure our tournaments ran better than ever. This upcoming year the Tournament Committee will be focused on filling all tournaments and improving on tournament operations through more establish training and more effective communications for members. Membership Committee This past year we were able to improve execution on traditional member events like registration, parent meetings, picture nights, and team banquets. This upcoming year we plan to enhance our member services through a Parent Coordinator task force to improve association communication with members. And, add members services to alleviate financial stress on our members such as an equipment exchange, stick repair service and affordable clothing options. Fundraising Committee This past year Fundraising was able to hold steady on legacy fundraisers of wreath sales, golf marathon, and giving hearts day, make strong gains in the Fall Social, and add an unexpected new event with the tremendously successful Graduating Mom s Banquet. This upcoming year Fundraising will focus on efficiency in legacy fundraisers, improvements where possible in existing events, and exploring new potential fundraisers like the community volunteer program to add further maturity to our financial structure. Staff In addition to supporting these committees and executing their plans, the staff is working on improving our internal business processes so we can enhance our ability to deliver great service to our members. And, Mr. Bushy and the arena staff are working on arena maintenance and improvements to ensure a safe and welcoming environment for our players and families that will help provide a great experience at the rink. Enjoy all your spring and summer activities! We look forward to seeing you back at the rink next year! Rob Gramer MYHA Executive Director

3 How to Optimize Athleticism By Mike Doyle, Special to Minnesota Hockey Much like children have to learn their ABCs before learning how to read and write, they must develop the ABCs of athleticism agility, balance and coordination before they can become capable hockey players. The core of USA Hockey s American Development Model is to build athletes not just hockey players by cultivating a healthy, active lifestyle that will last long beyond when a person hangs up the skates for the final time. Ken Martel has been the technical director of USA Hockey s ADM since He provides development blueprints to optimize athleticism for associations throughout the U.S. He believes that it is crucial for all aspiring hockey players to build athleticism through a variety of activities, beginning at a young age. The better your overall athleticism, the more competently you can move in a variety of situations, Martel said. For us, it s one of the reasons we want our kids to try and play multiple sports at a young age. Foster Athletics Through Activity Sure, it s nice to get your child involved into many organized sports. However, with the time and money it takes to raise a healthy child, sometimes signing them up for Little League or soccer isn t an option. Martel said that kids can learn plenty from just getting outside and being active. Be involved in multiple physical activities it doesn t necessarily have to be another sport, Martel said. We want our kids to be physically active to develop as broad a range of different movement skills as they possibly can. We say play other sports because that s going to be a controlled activity, but don t count out all of the free play that can happen with kids and their friends. Don t allow them to sit in front of the TV or play video games all summer. Climbing trees, riding bikes and playing schoolyard games help children naturally foster the ABCs of athleticism. If you re not physically active, it s hard for the body to wire itself to be more athletic, Martel said. You re not going to end up being a great hockey player if you don t have quality movement skills beforehand. You ve got to go and do other things along with playing ice hockey. Everything Off the Ice Is Dryland Not every youngster is going to be into formal dryland training things like jumping, squatting and sprinting they ll get into at an older age if they stick with the sport. In fact, players should not begin to train to train until their teenage years. For children under 10, Martel thinks they will develop athleticism by having fun while being active. We can formalize things you can go to USA Hockey for agility exercises, all good, Martel said. Kids don t always find that pre-scripted exercises fun. Kids just want to have fun. Go outside and play soccer, a little 1-on-1 or 2-on-2 in your backyard. Think of the agility, manipulation of the ball and lateral explosiveness. Go play tennis. You ll see those courts and there s nobody there. Think of the acceleration and deceleration needed and explosive lateral movement along with hand-eye coordination. They ll put more time and energy into it when it s the fun, play environment than when it s the over-scripted, coach-led initiative. Continued on next page..

4 How to Optimize Athleticism, continued... Raise the Ceiling Playing a single sport can actually limit a child s athletic ceiling. Most high-level hockey players don t specialize in the sport until their teenage years. Martel said that before the last Olympics, at a USA Hockey prep camp, they surveyed the players in attendance and asked them when they started to specialize in hockey. Only one player answered 11 and he was the outlier. Most answered 14, 15 and 16, with a few even older. And these are the best guys, Martel said. You don t see the early specialists make it to the elite levels. The NHL is full of great athletes and they have developed skills away from the rink, which they then brought ice. The best can make dazzling plays, seemingly out of thin air, that they may have never even practiced before. Many times, it is because they ve done similar movements in other sports and games. What brings you out of your seat when you re watching elite players? Martel asked. It s not what they do within the normal range of their skill set. It s what they do outside of the normal that brings us, as fans, out of our seats. Jeremy Gregoire Hockey Director SAVE THE DATE! MARK YOUR CALENDAR! These three will begin a three-year term starting immediately and will attend the next board meeting held on May 17. I am excited to have Mike continue his service on the board as he has been an integral part of the Executive Committee and the planning, research, and discussions involving the solving of our challenge of needing additional ice. I welcome Robby and Evan and look forward to having them involved in some important decisions for MYHA in the near future. Thank you to all who were nominated and ran for a board seat. Two board members complete their three-year terms and I thank them for their dedication and hard work over that time period. Corey Delorme was instrumental in turning around the tournaments we host and he has helped make them into a strong revenue source, in addition to ensuring that they are a great experience for our kids and all of the participants from other teams. Mark Hendrickson served on the fundraising committee which accounts for several hundreds of thousands of dollars raised that helps keep registration fees at an affordable level for our members. 7 Continued Success It is tough not to be excited about the year that we had in Moorhead and the future of the program. The success our teams had this year has not been matched in recent history. Our numbers are the highest they have ever been. To top it all off, we are in the process of planning for at least one more sheet of ice. This has not been without hard work. The Hockey Committee members, under the leadership of Jeremy Gregoire, have continued to value the development of fundamental skill and the ability to make plays with the puck. For those that watched the State Tournament this year, we were lucky enough to have a number of highly skilled players that were confident enough to make plays. To be able to have those types of players, it takes years of focusing on developing fundamental skills, allowing players to make plays, and coaches that place an emphasis on being creative. The Moorhead Youth Hockey Board, led by President Brian Stavenger and Executive Director Rob Gramer, have continued to create opportunities for our young hockey players by keeping the barriers to entry low. In addition, the Tobolt Foundation has created an opportunity for many young Spuds to play hockey. To have the financial support to keep entry costs low and still enact the programing that is needed is something that few associations are able to do. With a vision that has not wavered, a committed group of coaches, and financial stability, Moorhead Hockey will continue to have success. It is an exciting time to be from Moorhead. Congratulations to all Moorhead Hockey players on an outstanding season. Jon Ammerman Moorhead Boys Varsity Hockey Dennis Bushy Wm. Thayer Tutt Award Honoree The Wm Thayer Tuff Award is presented annually by USA Hockey to a volunteer who, during many years of service has displayed a selfless dedication to the enhancement of ice hockey at the grassroots level in the United States. Thayer Tuff Award is determined each year by a panel of hockey journalists and broadcasters from nominations provided by USA Hockey s volunteer family.
