Last year we had great participation from our parents and coaches during the training workshops which triggered ongoing discussion and awareness in our arena throughout the year. The PCAs mission directly aligns with MYHAs goal to continue to develop a positive culture for our kids! Take a look at the PCA story taken from its website: Positive Coaching Alliance (PCA) develops BETTER ATHLETES, BETTER PEOPLE through resources for youth and high school sports coaches, parents, administrators and student-athletes. In addition to 1,000+ free audio-video and printable tips and tools at PCA has partnered with roughly 3,500 schools and youth sports organizations nationwide to deliver live group workshops, online courses and books by PCA Founder Jim Thompson that help those involved in youth and high school sports create a positive, character-building youth sports culture. PCA resources, which have reached more than 8.6 million youth, strive to transform high school and youth sports into a Development Zone culture, where the goal is to develop Better Athletes, Better People and the following become the prevailing models in youth and high school sports: The Double-Goal Coach, who strives to win while also pursuing the more important goal of teaching life lessons through sports The Second-Goal Parent, who concentrates on life lessons, while letting coaches and athletes focus on competing The Triple-Impact Competitor, who strives to impact sport on three levels by improving oneself, teammates and the game as a whole. 2 Danton Cole s Guide to Summer Hockey By Michael Caples As much as USA Hockey encourages players to get away from the rink during the summer months, we all know that most kids will still find a way onto the ice during the offseason. However, that doesn t mean that young hockey players need drill-regimented training sessions during their summer excursions to the rink. In fact, they may benefit more from simply having free reign on the ice (or in the driveway or street hockey court). We can learn a lot I think as young athletes we do by playing and having some creativity and maybe get a little bit of the word no out of it, said USA Hockey s National Team Development Program head coach Danton Cole, as he talked about letting kids play unstructured pond hockey during the offseason. During the summers, if it s unstructured and there aren t parents or referees, nobody s keeping score. There are a lot of gains and you can try some stuff and you can test your limits and you re not worried about doing something wrong. Let Them Play Cole, a former NCAA and NHL player himself, said that when they are given the chance and the circumstance, kids will make up their own games, and not even realize how they are improving their athletic abilities. I look back to when we were kids, whether it was hockey or I played a lot of baseball growing up, I think the best games are the things kids make up, Cole said. A lot of times when you have short numbers or odd numbers and you have to figure out a way in baseball, we would have three or four guys, and if you re going to play a game in that situation, you have to pick your field. That s a great way to learn to hit to right field, or to pull the ball at times. It s the same way with hockey; you can come up with tons of different games and all of a sudden, you re doing small games and situations and odd situations and you can find yourself. I d just let the kids play. They re going to keep score, they re going to have winners and losers in there, and then they re going to come up with somebody else. I would just say hey, let them go, and you don t want to give them guidelines. That s almost the opposite. Do these 10 drills; no, don t do these 10 drills. Instead, just let them go out and play the game and find out about themselves. Staying Motivated In their own created scenarios a lot of which will be similar to American Development Model-recommended small-area games players will be able to use their peers as measuring sticks, which serves as great motivation during the offseason. Find out what your limits are and how far you can stretch them, Cole said. You will find out stuff that you need to work on. Johnny over there is really good at that, I d like to be good at it. Well, go home and work on it, and then the next day you re on the field or on a court or on the ice, maybe you can do it. More Reps, More Development A small game of shinny or street hockey also presents the opportunity for more repetitions for specific skills, as well. We want guys to fail, Cole said. You learn from that failure. It s just a snapshot it s not where you re at. When you learn that, the first time, we ll say using angling as an example, the first time I went in, I took too shallow of an angle and the guy beat me. The next time, I took too high of an angle and he got underneath me. If you re going through a drill, you might go through a set practice and have one or two instances of that, so there s not really enough feedback. If you re just goofing around and you re playing and you re in your basement and there s 15 feet between goals, you might get that situation 20 times. You will figure it out. You will take the correct angle eventually. It s something we see in society now. One, we don t want to see kids fail, or we don t let them fail, and then, two, we think they have to be told everything that they re going to learn, and there s not enough in terms of responsibility and maturity. I think that hinders development, and then when guys get to an age where they are held accountable, where they will have responsibility, they re not sure how to act. Quite frankly, one of the biggest things we have to get over the hurdle with for our guys is getting them to that point, getting them to understand we have a big sign up there for it that reminds them. It says, you re responsible for your own development. We take that seriously, but that s a skill. If you are going to make it, you re going to have to be able to do those things. Play Other Sports Of course, Cole stressed the importance of still taking a break from the sport during the offseason. I m a big advocate of other sports, the NTDP head coach said. I think we ve gotten into this, I think people have taken the 10,000- hour rule out of context, because it s not that I just have to do this basic thing, like if I m out playing baseball, I ll use that as an example again, hand-eye coordination and fielding the ball are outstanding for hockey, and it s a completely different pathway that I m using. There is a lot of crossover. If I m playing basketball, the offensive patterns and how to use my body and how to shield the ball, it s the same as protecting the puck. Those hours count up. Climbing a tree isn t the worst thing in the world. There s a lot to learn from that for strength and dexterity. I think all of those things add up to make us more complete athletes. At each meeting the financial records of the association and its gaming subsidiary are available to review by the members of the association. All members are invited to attend. Get your son/daughter registered at USA Hockey and get your confirmation code. 2. Use the MYHA registration link to complete the organization's player registration. (MYHA Registration will Re-open August 1) 3. Download/Complete/Save/Scan the Consent to Treat and Player Conduct forms. If this is your player's first year with MYHA, scan their birth certificate(s), and have them saved electronically to your computer, or bring it with you to one of the registration nights. 1. Attend one of of the on-site parent registration nights (date TBD) where you can finalize offline payments, turn in forms if not uploaded, turn in your volunteer deposit, and purchase your raffle tickets (required for ALL families). IF you are unable save the forms and birth certificate electronically and upload them during the online process you must be bring them in during registration night. The Minnesota Wild Learn to Play Hockey Program-Coming to the Moorhead Youth Arena this fall!! Over 700* boys and girls ages 5-8 (born between August 1, 2008 and August 1, 2011) will discover the sport of hockey through four (4) hours of introductory practices in their own, complete set (includes skates) of Total Hockey CCM Little Wild branded hockey equipment thanks to the combined efforts of the Minnesota Wild, Minnesota Hockey, CCM, and Total Hockey. *Must be a NEW hockey player in Minnesota to participate. NOTE: This program is in NO WAY a part of Moorhead Youth Hockey. It is presented by the Minnesota WILD in conjunction with Minnesota Hockey. 5 MYHA Tournament Worker Requirements Policy Season *This policy replaces the former Volunteer Policy and any volunteer hours* Hosted Tournaments profited over $100,000 over 13 events last season. This season we will host even more tournaments, a total of 16. We host tournaments as a way to keep your registration fees down, as well as providing a weekend at home without travel expenses. Because tournaments are essential to our association, working our tournaments is now a requirement. There are no exempt positions from this requirement. If you have a child playing in Moorhead Youth Hockey, you will work your assigned tournament, or tournaments if you have children on multiple teams. A deposit of $400 will be collected at registration as your commitment to working your assigned tournament shifts. Your deposit check will be held by Moorhead Youth Hockey (not cashed) until after you have worked your assigned shifts. The Tournament Director(s) will ASSIGN team member families to adequately cover the shifts required for that tournament. Families can expect to work about 4 shifts, but this will vary based on the roster size of the teams assigned and the needs of that particular tournament. If you are unable to work your assigned shift, it is YOUR responsibility to find a replacement. If you, or your replacement, does not show up to work your shift, or if you do not fulfill your job duties, your $400 deposit check will be cashed immediately. It is not the intention of Moorhead Youth Hockey to cash deposit checks. We would rather have everyone work together to provide a fun and exciting tournament atmosphere for the players. 6 Opportunity... Life as an athlete is full of moments. Scoring a goal, hitting a home run, winning, losing, and even being selected for a team. All of these are moments that come and go. Yet, many do not see the work (or lack of work) that is put in behind those moments. Many of those that continue to have success are those that consistently give their best effort and work longer than everyone else. Quickly use the internet to search late development-hockey and you will find a number of resources on the topic. There are plenty of quotes and stories about players that were successful because they participated in multiple sports, trusted the process, and controlled what they could (showing up, attitude, and effort). Ultimately, enjoy the moments. But athletes who are not satisfied with short term results and continue to work are the ones that will one day play for the Spuds and might be lucky enough to play beyond Moorhead High. Jon Amerman Moorhead High School Raffle Changes at MYHA! The annual raffle is one of MYHA s biggest fundraisers, with some of the proceeds helping to off-set registration costs. It also generates additional money for the Association. This year we are looking to change it up a little bit and move to a Mega-Raffle! In addition to some large cash prizes, we are adding many more fun and exciting items such as a washer/dryer, a lawn care package that includes a lawn mower, leaf blower and trimmer, lake get-away packages, designer purse and much more! We want to get more of the community excited and involved in the raffle and work to keep it growing year after year. Each family will be required to sell 3 more tickets this year than last year. The time to sell the tickets has been extended as well. The turn-in date is March 1, This year we also have some fun incentives for the top 3 individual ticket sellers and to the team with the most ticket sales. In addition to the required tickets each member family is required to sell, we want to boost our sales by selling tickets in the lobby at our tournaments. The drawing will be held on May 1, 2017 at our annual meeting, which will also include a Member Appreciation BBQ.
