As a member of MN Hockey, Moorhead Youth Hockey (and all MN associations) follow this model. In short, community-based means that all members of that association must live within the city or cities that association serves. There are many tangibles and intangibles that support the community model is the best approach for participation and development. The Minnesota way keeps cost down and provides opportunity for more kids to play (MN leads the way in number of players at every level from 6U to Senior). The Minnesota way kids to stay at home and play with their childhood friends all the way through High School (easing the financial and time strain on families). The Minnesota way produces high end players (MN leads the way in number of players playing junior hockey, college hockey, national teams, and professional hockey). These are all things that are reported and discussed regularly that point toward the Minnesota model working, but every once in a while I hear something new that makes the point in a new and exciting way. Here are 3 things I recently came across that speak to the MN Way: 1 - The top 4 COUNTRIES in the world for number of hockey players are? 1) Canada, 2) United States, 3) Russia, 4) MINNESOTA 2 This is directly from the press release from USA Hockey: USA Hockey announced today the 22-player roster for its U.S. Women s National Under-18 Team, which will compete at the 2016 International Ice Hockey Federation Under-18 World Championship. The 22 players represent seven different states. Minnesota leads the pack with 16 representatives, followed by California, Illinois, Massachusetts, North Dakota, Rhode Island, and Washington with one each. That team went on to win the world championships with 16 out of 22 players being from Minnesota. That is incredible. 3 A quote from Rand Pecknold, head coach of the #1 ranked division 1 college men s team, Quinnipiac University in New Hampshire for most of last season (which ended up losing the National Championship game to the University of North Dakota): The best state at producing hockey players is Minnesota. Nothing even comes close to touching the Minnesota youth and high school model. Moorhead Youth Hockey and its members are fortunate to be a part of Minnesota Hockey and its community-based model. Minnesota leads the way and is the envy of many. Rob Gramer MYHA Executive Director

2 MYHA Tournament Worker Requirements Policy Season *This policy replaces the former Volunteer Policy and any volunteer hours* Hosted Tournaments profited over $100,000 over 13 events last season. This season we will host even more tournaments, a total of 16. We host tournaments as a way to keep your registration fees down, as well as providing a weekend at home without travel expenses. Because tournaments are essential to our association, working our tournaments is now a requirement. There are no exempt positions from this requirement. If you have a child playing in Moorhead Youth Hockey, you will work your assigned tournament, or tournaments if you have children on multiple teams. A deposit of $400 will be collected at registration as your commitment to working your assigned tournament shifts. Your deposit check will be held by Moorhead Youth Hockey (not cashed) until after you have worked your assigned shifts. The Tournament Director(s) will ASSIGN team member families to adequately cover the shifts required for that tournament. Families can expect to work about 4 shifts, but this will vary based on the roster size of the teams assigned and the needs of that particular tournament. If you are unable to work your assigned shift, it is YOUR responsibility to find a replacement. If you, or your replacement, does not show up to work your shift, or if you do not fulfill your job duties, your $400 deposit check will be cashed immediately. It is not the intention of Moorhead Youth Hockey to cash deposit checks. We would rather have everyone work together to provide a fun and exciting tournament atmosphere for the players. 5 By Joe Bonnett, ADM Regional Manager 10U Q-and-A: Homespun Offseason Training Q: As we head into the spring and summer, is there anything my 10U hockey player can do at home to enhance athleticism and improve hockey skills in a cost-effective manner? A: This is a great question, and one that is especially top-of-mind for those families who are juggling multiple kids summer schedules of sports, camps, vacations and downtime. First and foremost, USA Hockey recommends playing multiple sports to enhance athleticism, and many of those complementary sports also enhance hockey skills. Spring and summer is the perfect time to encourage your 10U children to play different sports. There are many benefits to having your child participate in other sports. For example, gymnastics and swimming improve rhythm and coordination while working both sides of the body. Tennis develops quickness and improves hand-eye coordination. Golf improves hand-eye coordination. Soccer enhances agility, quickness and the attacking mentality. Lacrosse is great for agility, hand-eye, attacking and quickness. Basketball develops hand-eye coordination, attacking, all-around coordination and explosiveness. Baseball improves hand-eye coordination. These are all great complimentary sports, particularly hightransfer games like lacrosse, soccer and basketball, which employ many of the same attacking and defending concepts used in hockey. These sports encourage athleticism, rhythm and decision-making skills. These skills will transfer to the ice in the fall. Moving beyond complementary sports, if your child also has a strong desire to work on their hockey game outside the rink this summer, there are plenty of activities that can be done in your garage. I encourage some of the following categories for your 10U player: Strength These exercises should be done with body-weight only. No weights or machines are needed. Simple push-ups, pull -ups and body squats will improve overall strength and confidence as these large muscle areas strengthen. Once your child masters these classic exercises, they can advance to single-leg strengthening moves such as one-foot hops (forward, backward, side to side) and two-foot jumps. A nice progression for the body squat is the farmer s throw. Have your player squat down, pick up a medicine ball and toss it over their shoulder at the top of the squat (alternating the toss from one shoulder to the other). Core Strength and Stability Core strength is vital for any activity. Classic planks will help stabilize the athlete s midsection. Have your athlete perform a plank for a specific amount of time and increase gradually over the summer. You can also toss a medicine ball to your player while standing on two feet, one foot or an unstable surface. Another great activity to try at home is tumbling. Challenge your athlete to perform cartwheels, somersaults and opposite-arm somersaults. You will be amazed how many young athletes struggle with these simple tumbling moves. Speed and Agility Quickness of the feet will help stimulate brain activity and coordination for your athlete. Simple ladder drills will allow your athlete to challenge themselves at a speed commensurate to their ability. You can find many patterns for the ladders on the internet. Reaction drills are also highly useful to hockey players. These drills stimulate the brain. Not only do these drills help quickness, but they promote quick decision-making skills as well. Be creative. Sprint races and five-yard cones drills are effective and fun. Shooting and Stickhandling There is no substitute for shooting a puck. Shooting is very sport-specific. If you can set up a shooting area, let your player have at it. Shooting pucks builds endurance in the core, forearms, back and hands. They can also shoot different shots and create games involving accuracy. Stickhandling is easy in the garage as well. Use different pucks and balls to create a challenging stickhandling environment. Stickhandling balls are good. Street-hockey pucks are good. Golf balls are good, too, because they re sensitive, so they develop soft hands. You can use many items found in a garage as stickhandling obstacles. Feel free to use anything from a 2x4, to a bike to cones. Endurance Teach your player how to box. Simple boxing techniques of right-left combinations (coordination), ducking and kicking can challenge your player. This is hard work but very rewarding. Once they get into the boxing groove, their confidence will soar. Closing Thoughts You definitely don t need to join a gym or buy special equipment to provide your 10U player a great offseason of training and development. The ideas I ve covered here are just a small slice of the many convenient and affordable things that can help your player improve this summer. A 30- or 40-minute session of these kinds of activities performed two or three times each week will pay great dividends this fall. Just remember to keep it lighthearted and fun. Thanks, Jeremy Gregoire, Hockey Director

Participants will then be asked to shoot pucks and work on stick handling at Home throughout the summer with a final testing session again in the fall to check for improvements. Participants will not be required to attend sessions at the youth rink as we have done in past years. However, we will have shooting and puck handling stations set up at the youth rink for those who don t have a place to complete the shooting and stick handling challenges.
