1 MIDAM DISABLED HOCKEY UPDATES FROM WINTER MEETING, 2013 MIDAM DISABLED SECTION NEWSLETTER Winter, 2013 Happy New Year! This newsletter will present you with the latest updates from both the USA Hockey meetings that take place each January and June and the MidAm Board meetings that occur three times a year. At the USA Hockey meetings, I have the opportunity to meet face-to- face with the other districts Disabled Section representatives. The agenda typically includes growth and development of disabled hockey across the country, referring to special, sled, standing/amputee, and deaf/hard of hearing hockey; playing rules and regulations; festivals and tournaments; marketing and communication. At the MIDAM meetings, I participate in discussions with other Board members discussing topics that include disabled hockey, risk management, and safety. My goal as representative of the MIDAM Disabled Section is to provide you updated information after each USA Hockey and MIDAM meeting. The newsletter will contain three sections: updates and news for all MIDAM members, special hockey updates and sled hockey updates. 2 ANNUAL REGISTRATION Updates from winter meeting, 2013 UPDATES FOR ALL MIDAM MEMBERS Every team under the Disabled Section should be registering their players, volunteers and members of the coaching staff, annually. By doing so, our growth improves our eligibility for additional funding. Each team/program should have a designated registrar o Players in their first season are waived from paying fees, However, the registrar should register them using CyberSport o Players who have participated in a past season MUST PAY REGISTRATION FEES TO USA HOCKEY This can be done online at: Claiming players, volunteers and coaches: Each team/program registrar should provide a list of all registered players with their birthdates to the MIDAM registrar to be claimed or counted under the Disabled Section. EXCLUSIVE MIDAM AWARD The MIDAM section offers a unique annual award only for programs in its district. The Roger Sharrer Award is intended to assist in the growth and development of recreational hockey programs. The application can be found on the MIDAM website around Jan/Feb of each year. The application is easy to complete no prior grant writing experience necessary. Past awards have included requests for protective equipment, sleds, sticks, OneGoal sets, and bumpers. One award year, a hockey organization requested funds for van transportation to bring kids from a school to a local rink to learn how to play hockey as apart of their physical education. Whether you have a novel idea or have basic needs, I strongly recommend EVERYONE apply for award money. FYI: award NOT available for ANY ice costs. DISABLED ATHLETE OF THE YEAR AWARD // NOMINATIONS: USA Hockey's Annual Congress is the yearly gathering of USA Hockey s volunteer leaders, including members of the organization s board of directors, councils, committees and sections. At each, some of the organization's most outstanding contributors and players are recognized. One of those awards is the Disabled Athlete of the Year. This individual is honored at the awards banquet in front of the entire USA Hockey congregation.

3 Updates from winter meeting, 2013 Created in 2005, the USA Hockey Disabled Athlete of the Year Award annually recognizes the outstanding perseverance and dedication by a disabled hockey player through demonstrating the ability to overcome obstacles in the pursuit of excellence both on and off the ice. Do you have an athlete who is deserving of recognition? Keep that person in mind, as applications will be available soon at: SAFESPORT UPDATE - USA Hockey has long had systems in place to protect its participants from physical abuse, sexual abuse and other types of abuse and misconduct that can be harmful to youth hockey players. To review the manual, click HERE MARKETING DISABLED HOCKEY PROGRAMS A few promotional ideas to share: o Promote Disabled Hockey during Hockey Weekend Across America and Try Hockey For Free. Coordinate with your local youth hockey organization to promote disabled hockey. Bring your players, families, coaches and equipment to the rink! o Contact local youth and or adult hockey leagues in your area and ask them to scrimmage your team and or donate one hour of ice rental to your program o Demonstrate or scrimmage between games at a local youth tournament

5 Updates from winter meeting, 2013 FIRST-TIME SLED CLINIC ASSISTANCE This past season, several sled hockey clinics were conducted in an effort to initiate new programs in the MIDAM region. Clinics were held in Bowling Green, OH, Dayton, OH, and Lexington, KY. Louisville, KY is currently planning a clinic in late April. To assist those serious about building new programs, there may be up to $200 available to off-set costs through the MIDAM Disabled Section. If you are interested in learning more about this assistance, contact Renee Loftspring at sledhockey@zoomtown.com ELITE SLED HOCKEY PROGRAM - FORMERLY: ADULT SLED HOCKEY TEAM The ELITE National Sled Hockey League is open to anyone with experience playing sled hockey. To participate, each player MUST (a) commit to play all play-off tournament weekends, held in different cities within the MidAm region and southern Michigan; in addition each player commits to attending the National Disability Sports Festival, held in a different location each year, if their team qualifies for the national championships;(b) pays a league fee; and (c) is responsible for all expenses they incur as an individual player (ex.) travel, food, transportation For more information: USA WARRIORS: Many of USA Warrior standing amputees are still patients at Walter Reed Rehabilitation Hospital. After being discharged from rehabilitation, it is common to retire from the military and return home. At this point, they may be looking for a team to join. If you hear of anyone from the military looking for a standing amputee team to join, the MIDAM region does not have a program. If they would like to start a program in the MIDAM region, contact either Renee Loftspring at sledhockey@zoomtown.com or the National Chair of standing amputee hockey, Dr. David Crandell at: dcrandell@amputeehockey.org.
