1 Wright County 4-H Newsletter May 2018 Dear 4-H Families, Summer is right around the corner, and before we know it we will be at the County Fair! Make sure to mark your calendar with important dates and deadlines within this newsletter. Wright County 4-H shirts are available at the Extension office, these are the green ones with the white print. Remember all 4-H youth need to wear a 4-H shirt during judging times at fairs. Green 4-H T-shirts are $10, get yours today. Reminder: just because you verified an animal for fair (county or state) does NOT mean that it is a fair entry. The entry is the second step and for county this is done on paper and a fee paid at my office by June 8th. For the state fair entry process, that needs to be done by July 1 and this is done online. State Fair books and entry forms will be on the web. If you have questions please make sure to ask. Be sure to check out all the information on 4-H project available: Here you can find ideas and resources for presentations and fair exhibits. Making the Best Better! 2 4-H ERS FOR 4-H 4-H'ers investing in 4-H'ers. This is the essence of the 4-H'ers for 4-H Campaign, sponsored each year by the State 4-H Council. The campaign raises money to fund projects that benefit 4-H members throughout the state. This year marks the 33rd anniversary of the Iowa 4-H'ers for 4-H Campaign. This annual campaign is conducted by youth members of the State 4-H Council Finance Committee. 4-H Clubs across the state are encouraged to donate dollars per 4-H member and the funds raised benefit financial aid, State 4-H Conference, and other projects as voted upon by the State 4-H Council. The campaign runs March 1 - June 1. Participation is easy! The donation form was mailed to leaders, then return it along with your donation to the Extension office by May 15. This is a campaign conducted by 4-H youth for 4-H youth, and the Finance Committee, we hope all clubs across Iowa are able to participate! Thank you for your commitment to 4-H! NO money will be given back for unused ear tags. Both ear notches and ear tag need to be entered into 4HOnline by May 15 th. STATE FAIR SWINE INFORMATION If you are thinking about exhibiting swine at the Iowa State Fair, all State Fair swine (market & breeding), must have a special DNA punch tag. These DNA punch tags are at the Extension office and there is a charge. The DNA punch tag requires a special tagger so please contact Jessica a few days ahead of when you plan to pick up the tags and tagger. That way she will let you know if the tagger is available. Families will need to tag their own swine and enter it into 4HOnline. If you have questions please call the Extension office and talk to Jessica. LIVESTOCK EXHIBITORS The H202 is available now. 8 PINTEREST TO ORIGINAL SOURCE IN 3 EASY STEPS 1) Find item/recipe on Pinterest Wow, that cheeseburger casserole really looks good!. Click on the image 8

9 2) Clicking on the image brings up a page just for the cheeseburger casserole. Still on a Pinterest page but wait! Scroll the mouse over the casserole picture and a Visit number-2-pencil.com icon pops up below the image. Now we re getting somewhere that s starting to look like an original source. Not Pinterest, but number-2-pencil.com. (We could live with citing number-2-pencil.com as the source, but we can do better. ) Click on either the image of the casserole or on the Visit number=2-pencil.com icon. 9

10 3) Voila! A new window pops up on a page from the original website of the recipe number-2- pencil.com. Scrolling down even tells us that Melissa at number-2-pencil.com is the author and there s even a button to print the recipe for our recipe book. Now we ve actually found the original source. COPYRIGHT INFO Duplication of copyright material or design should not be used in a 4-H exhibit that is presented as original work by the exhibitor. A copyright design cannot be displayed in a public setting (fair) without permission being granted from the owner of the copyright. When permission has been granted by the owner of the copyright, the exhibit will be displayed and labeled appropriately. Those without permission cannot be displayed.
