Check out the Omaha Zoo Trip, 4-H Fun Night, Clover Kids, Maize Retreat, and other upcoming events. Mark your calendar with important dates and deadlines. 2 4-H FUN NIGHT Family Fun Night Saturday, March 10, 2018, at the Clarion-Goldfield-Dows High School. The evening will be filled with: Games, Food, Fun, Friends and Prizes Parent committees letters have been mailed to help with food stand, bingo, traffic control, tickets sales, and the raffle. Last year royalty parents are asked to decorate the stage for coronation. Cakes & Pies: All families are assigned to bring either a cake or pie. Please bring all pies and cakes in disposable containers and label the kind of pie!! 3 4-H PIZZA RANCH FUNDRAISER Citizenship Washington Focus trip Help support our five youth going on the Citizenship Washington Focus trip to Washington D.C. June 8-17, These youth will be bussing tables for tips on Wednesday, March 21 and April 18 at the Clarion Pizza Ranch. Don t have time to stay and eat, what about ordering pizza to go, They will receive 10% of sales between 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm! The dollars raised from the night is going to help cover the cost of the trip. Youth going include: HannahJo Gustafson-Hodson, Emily Kapka, Kara Legleiter, Sarah Seaba, & Shea Whaley. Please mark these two dates for family night out and support 4-H youth, win win for all. 4-H PAMPERED CHEF FUNDRAISER Citizenship Washing Focus trip Join us for a Pampered Chef Fundraiser Show Tuesday, March 20, 7 pm at the Wright County ISU Extension and Outreach office! Join us to learn to prepare a quick but delicious one pan/pot meal. Lauri will be demonstrating many tools that make meal prep easy. Sample a tasty recipe and get easy cooking tips while supporting a great cause. Up to 15 percent off our total sales will go towards this fundraiser-plus an extra $3 for every Show booked from the event. Feel free to bring a friend-the more the merrier! Grab your camera and use your imagination, grab you to capture outstanding photos. Select your best photo and submit in the challenge class. Remember only one photo can be submitted in the challenge class and the challenge photo cannot be submitted in regular photography class. CLOTHING EVENT JUDGING COUNTY FAIR Clothing Selection, Fashion Revue, $15 Challenge, and change/modified outfits will have conference judging on Tuesday, June 19th from 9 am to 7 pm. For more information contact Jessica at the Extension office. Schedules and information will be sent out after fair entries are turned in on Friday, June 8th. The youth will model and receive award placing on Thursday, July 12 th during the County Fair Fair Theme: Fair Necessities 3

4 WRIGHT COUNTY CATTLEMENS BANQUET Everyone is invited to attend the Wright County Cattlemen s banquet on Friday, March 16 at Cattlemans in Belmond at 6:00 pm. The Cattlemen will cover tickets for all 4-H members who exhibited last year in the large beef project area. Otherwise tickets are $15 per person. If you are planning to attend please contact Travis Tate at by Wednesday, March 14, as he needs a number for food count. BLOCK & BRIDLE PROVEN to WIN PIG SALE March 24 at the Hansen Center, ISU, Ames. Great opportunity for 4-H members to pick out some pigs for the fair year! Also, a FREE youth judging clinic at 10 AM will be held by the ISU livestock judging team. Topics include nutrition, showmanship, favorable traits to look for in young pigs, and other tips. Contact: Danielle Koester SHEEP & MEAT GOAT WEIGH-IN Wright County sheep & meat goat weigh-in is set for Saturday, May 5th at the Wright County Fair Grounds. Trailers are to come in the west drive, stop at the south side of sheep barn to get paper work, go around swine bldg. and animals will be unloaded on the north side of the show ring. All lambs (market, commercial, and purebred breeding) nominating for State Fair/Ak-Sar-Ben MUST have a 4-H ear tag, weighed and a retinal image collected at county weigh in. All meat goats (market animal and breeding does) must have a 4-H tag (or official tattoo for does) and birth date is required. Retinal images required for all State Fair/Ak-Sar-Ben meat goats, both breeding and market. Ear tags are a $1 each; this cost is part of the project expense. ANIMAL IDENTIFICATION DUE MAY 15TH For all species of animals to be shown at county fairs, State Fair, and AKSARBEN must be identified through 4hOnline. This needs to be done by May 15 for county fairs, and the State Fair. Animals included swine, horses, poultry, rabbits, dairy, pets, breeding beef & sheep, so basically anything that breathes and eats needs to have an ID completed for exhibiting at Fairs. Market beef and sheep will or have been ID d at weigh-in. SWINE EAR TAGS If you plan to exhibit swine at the county fair you will need to purchase ear tags. This is required for both 4-H/FFA swine that will be shown at the Wright County Fair. Ear tag will be a $1 each, and can be picked up at that the Extension office. NO money will be given back for unused ear tags. Both ear notches and ear tag need to be entered into 4hOnline by May 15 th. STATE FAIR SWINE INFORMATION If you are thinking about exhibiting swine at the Iowa State Fair, all State Fair swine (market & breeding), must have a special DNA punch tag. These DNA punch tags are at the Extension office and there is a charge. The DNA punch tag requires a special tagger so please contact Jessica a few days ahead of when you plan to pick up the tags and tagger. That way she will let you know if the tagger is available. Families will need to tag their own swine and enter it into 4- honline. If you have questions please call the Extension office and talk to Jessica. 4

5 Iowa State Fair Livestock Updates & Changes Beef: Split Hereford Heifers into Polled & Horned classes Horse: Reminder: Halter class horses MUST be owned cannot be leased; papers/ verification is required at check-in. 6 YQCA (YOUTH for the QUALITY and CARE of ANIMALS) If you plan to show any of the following species at the County/State Fair, you must be YQCA certified: Beef, dairy (goat or cow), meat goat, poultry, rabbit, sheep, swine Youth for the Quality and Care of Animals (YQCA) Program (no longer FSQA) YQCA stands for Youth for the Quality and Care of Animals. The National Pork Board is transitioning to this program over from YPQA and FSQA. It is an online training offered nationally, but will still have in-person training. This training is a yearly certification and has a cost of $12 for the online version and $3 for the in-person training. The fee for either training will be collected online, when you select the training. How do you become certificated? Attend the in-person training (see dates below) Complete the online training via 4HOnline The Youth for the Quality and Care of Animals (YCQA) program is a program taught only by certified ISU Extension staff. It focuses on three topics: Food Safety, Animal Well-Being, and Life Skills. Wright County s YQCA in-person trainings will be held: (MUST SIGN UP ONLINE) **only way to sign up for these trainings is online at Sign in with 4HOnline and use your family log-in Thursday, April 12 th 6:30pm-8:30pm Training All 4-H youth Extension Office Members attending an in-person training only need to attend one of the in-person trainings Those wanting to do the online training may at their own. It is the intent that all Wright County 4-H ers have their YQCA training completed by May 15 th. To find out more about the YQCA program or any Questions, please visit with Jessica at

7 LIVESTOCK EXHIBITORS The H202 is available now. Please read it! This is the Iowa 4-H Livestock Show Requirements Animal Identification, Weighing and Exhibiting Requirements for County, State and interstate shows. SOIL SAMPLING FOR YARDS AND GARDENS During this program we will discuss how to take soil samples for gardens, flower beds and lawns, including what tools to use, how many samples, samples depth, the best time of year to take samples and where to send your soil samples for analysis. You will get a soil sample bag to be able to take your own sample at home. A follow-up to this session will be held in April on how to interpret the soil sample results for fertilizer recommendations. This program is free, open to all youth and adults and will be held on March 29th 6:00-7:00 pm,. Please register by calling the Extension office by March 28th. EXPERIENCE AGRONOMY EVENT ISU Agronomy Club wants to invite you to Experience Agronomy Day: The Future of Agriculture! Youth participating in Experience Agronomy Event April 7, 8 AM to 1 PM, Agronomy Hall, ISU Campus, will be exposed to hands-on activities centered around the three pillars of sustainability in agronomy covering the economic, social, and environmental aspects of sustainability, along with a session on technology in agronomy and an outreach component of packaging meals for those in need in Iowa. Registration includes a t-shirt and lunch. Learn about agronomy at a basic level while developing a passion for agriculture and increasing your agricultural literacy! 8 REGION 7 SUMMER 4-H DAY CAMP EDUCATOR JOB The summer 4-H Day Camp Educator will work 40 hours/week work schedule, starting Monday, June 11, 2018 and working through Friday, August 10, Up to two Summer 4-H Day Camp Educators will be hired. Interested applicants should their cover letter, resume, and contact information for three professional references to Abby Stanek (arpete@iastate.edu) before Friday, March 23, WRIGHT COUNTY SUMMER INTERN JOB Wright County Extension and Outreach is accepting applications for a temporary, part-time Summer Intern to assist 30 hours per week with various office activities and youth programs from May 29 th August 3 th. Qualification include a minimum of a high school diploma, knowledge of 4-H, strong communication and organizational skills, up-to-date computer and technology skills, and ability to work some evenings and weekends. OMAHA ZOO TRIP...TIME TO SIGN UP All 6-8th graders are encouraged to attend the Henry Doorly Zoo trip to Omaha on April 6-7, Friday evening youth will enjoy a guided night hike and sleeping in the Aquarium along with Saturday s events that include an IMAX movie, gift shop, and more time visiting the zoo animals. Cost is $70, and space is limited so get your registration in with payment to save a seat for you. Registrations & payment due March 15th. You can find the registration form on the webpage at APPLY to ATTEND ANIMAL SCIENCE ROUNDUP Start Your Future Here is the theme for the 2018 State 4-H Youth Conference. Youth in 8th grade and older may attend this three day event on the ISU campus. 4-H members interested in attending the Animal Science ROUNDUP sessions must apply on-line by March 15! 2017 Species: Beef, Dairy Cattle, Poultry, Sheep, and Swine. 9 Registration Open for the 2018 MAIZE RETREAT Registration for the 2018 Maize Retreat, April 13-15, is now open in 4HOnline. This year s retreat is open to all Iowa youth in grades The Maize Retreat is held on Iowa State University campus and the Clover Woods Camping Center near Madrid, IA. Youth in grades 8-12, join us for a weekend of cultural celebration of Latino and Native American heritage, learning and leadership experiences, and FUN! Contact Jessica for more details. STATE 4-H YOUTH CONFERENCE: START YOUR FUTURE HERE The 2018 Iowa 4-H Youth Conference is just around the corner. Every June almost 900 teenagers converge on the campus of Iowa State University for 3 days full of speaker, workshops, mixers, dances, and a banquet and community service activities. If you've completed 8th grade, you're eligible to attend. You don't even have to be in 4-H to attend this conference! You will get to experience campus life, and meet new people from across the state! The dates have been set for June 26-28, 2018 for a great three day adventure at ISU for Iowa s youth. Please join us in June for the most incredible three days of your life at the Iowa 4-H Youth Conference! Be watching the Iowa 4-H Youth Conference web page as updates will be shared there in the coming weeks. They hope to have registration live by mid-march. Residential, overnight equine camp open to grades Campers will bring their horse to camp and participate in daily activities. Space is limited! 10 Wright County District Junior Fair Scholarship Application Postmark due March 31 Application is online at: content/4-h-awards Iowa Foundation for Agricultural Advancement (IFAA) Scholarships College-bound Iowa youth active in 4-H and/or FFA livestock projects and current undergraduate students may apply for scholarships available from the Iowa Foundation for Agricultural Advancement (IFAA). Applications and additional information are available by visiting the Sale of Champions section of the Iowa State Fair s website ( or by calling Steph Doran at Selection will be based on level of 4-H/FFA involvement in livestock and other agricultural project work, livestock exhibition and/or judging, scholarship, leadership and career plans. Applications for current undergraduate students must be postmarked by April 1, and applications for incoming freshmen must be postmarked by May 1. All materials should be sent to IFAA Winner s Circle Scholarship, c/o Iowa Foundation for Agricultural Advancement, 3116 Evergreen Road, Ames, IA Winners will be announced during the 2018 Iowa State Fair. HOOVER UNCOMMON STUDENT AWARD The Hoover Presidential Foundation application deadline is March 15, As many as 15 students will be chosen for the program with each receiving a $1,500 stipend. In addition, three $5,000 scholarships are awarded for study at an accredited two- or four-year college or university anywhere in the country. The award program seeks to identify uncommon students during their junior year in high school. Applicants submit a proposal for a public service project they want to accomplish. Students are not evaluated on the basis of grades, test scores, essays, or financial need. Students are selected each year on the basis of their stated project goal and detailed plans to reach that goal. Finalists spend a required expense-paid weekend in West Branch (just east of Iowa City) during the summer between their junior and senior year. During the weekend, they receive mentoring and assistance developing their projects to aid in their success. Time is also spent behind the scenes at the Hoover Presidential Library-Museum to help students become more familiar with President Hoover s ideals regarding humanitarianism and public service. In October of their senior year, finalists make presentations about their projects at the Herbert Hoover Presidential Library-Museum. At that time, each student receives the $1,500 stipend and three are chosen to receive a $5,000 scholarship. Information and applications may be found at under the Grants & Awards tab. 11 RESCHEDULED 4-H VOLUNTEER TRAINING 4-H Builds Resilience Join 4-H leaders from across Wright County in an interactive, hands on training that will help volunteers explore how brain development and personal growth relate to their role as volunteers. By supporting youth to build resilience, we are providing opportunities for youth to develop belonging, mastery, and independence. During this training, 4-H leaders will gain an understanding of resilience and the connection they provide in increasing resilience in youth. In addition, leaders will learn skills that can be applied to promote and create opportunities to build resilience as well as utilize tools to promote growth in youth. This training is part of the statewide leader training and will be held on Tuesday, March 27 from 6:00-8:30 pm at the Wright County ISU Extension and Outreach office. All 4-H Volunteers need to attend this training. There will be a light meal at the training. A benefit of participating in the face-to-face volunteer training is the interaction and sharing with other volunteers. If you are not able to attend the training, contact the Extension office to learn more about participating through other training options. Please register by contacting the Wright County Extension Office by Wednesday, March 21st. 4-H PARTIES, ACTIVITIES, FUNDRAISING, VOLUNTEERING I know that many clubs are planning parties, fun activities, fundraising and community volunteering and I commend you all for that! All I ask is that you keep in mind our risk management and insurance policies and keep Jessica informed on your plans so that the office knows where our 4-Hers are and what they are doing! I would also welcome any photos you would like to share of your club celebrations! 4-H ERS FOR 4-H 4-H'ers investing in 4-H'ers. This is the essence of the 4-H'ers for 4-H Campaign, sponsored each year by the State 4-H Council. The campaign raises money to fund projects that benefit 4-H members throughout the state. This year marks the 33rd anniversary of the Iowa 4-H'ers for 4-H Campaign. This annual campaign is conducted by youth members of the State 4-H Council Finance Committee. 4-H Clubs across the state are encouraged to donate dollars per 4-H member and the funds raised benefit financial aid, State 4-H Conference, and other projects as voted upon by the State 4-H Council. The campaign runs March 1 - June 1. Participation is easy! Donation form will be mailed to leaders, then return it along with your donation to the Extension office by May 15. This is a campaign conducted by 4-H youth for 4-H youth, and the Finance Committee, hope all clubs across Iowa are able to participate! Thank you for your commitment to 4-H! Wright County Teen Council has challenged all clubs to donate $6.00 per 4-H member. Information will be sent to club leaders soon. Please complete donation form and club check then submit to Jessica at the Extension by May 15th. 11

12 Bucket of Junk Contest Goal: To design an art piece using scraps of metal, junk, and your creativity Open to any youth of Wright County Entry for Bucket of Junk Contest (not eligible for State Fair selection) Contest will be limited to the first 20 participants. Registration: Come to the Extension office between March 19, 2018 & March 30, 2018 during normal business hours, to pick-up a 5-gallon bucket containing unique pieces of junk. Rules for Entry Exhibitor is to design, fabricate, and complete his/her creation. Adult supervision is recommended, but the finished product must be the work of the exhibitor. You can clean, weld, cut, bolt, fasten, bend, shape, paint or finish the items however you choose, BUT you cannot add any additional pieces. (Bolts and wire may be used as fasteners but not as decorative items). All pieces must be used, except the bucket (to be returned) Be as creative as your mind lets you. don t let the junk distract from your creativity. Safety is extremely important when completing your creation! Do not leave razor sharp edges or points that would be dangerous. Work with an adult who has knowledge of tools, machines, and proper fabrication technique. Bring the 5-gallon bucket to the fair with your completed creation on Tuesday, July 10 th, It must be in place by 3:00 PM, in the designated area in the 4-H building. Exhibit hang tag must be attached to your exhibit. No goal sheet or photos are needed for this project. No exhibitor will be permitted in the area during judging. All entries will be presented with participation ribbons. All completed projects will be on display around the fairgrounds, after judging, for the public to enjoy, Wednesday, July 11th through 1:00 pm Sunday, July 15 th. The top 5 creations will be sold at the annual fair auction on Sunday July 15 th. The 1 st place winner will receive half of the proceeds from the sale of their creation. Proceeds from the remaining 4 will go to the fair for future use. The remaining 15 creations will be returned to the exhibitor to do what they want with their creation. You could donate them to a charity, give them to your friends or neighbors, give them as a gift, etc. Most importantly, have fun with your creation for nothing but the FAIR NECESSITIES 12
