Please make arrangements as a club for pick up of your orders. Meat will need to be picked up that day as it will need to be kept frozen. There will be limited space for clubs to store their order until Sunday when the fruit is delivered (and then pick up on Sunday at 3:30). If your club would like to use this option, please contact Katie ASAP to see if there is room for your club s order. Heart of Belonging Leaders Training Thank you to the leaders who attended the Heart of Belonging Training on February 23rd. Leaders who were not able to attend have been sent a letter with materials and directions to complete the training for this year to remain in good standing as a 4-H volunteer. 4 4-H Livestock News 4-H ers interested in exhibiting in the Share-A-Pig class, please let Katie know by March 27th. 4-H ers interested in exhibiting in the Derby swine class, please let Katie know by March 27th. Derby swine weigh-in April 4th, 2015 Location & Time TBA Horse Project Meetings The first horse project meeting will be March 23rd, 6:30pm at the CEO. 4-H ers must attend TWO workshops/ exhibitor meetings to show at the Jackson County Fair. Please RSVP to Katie so the Horse Committee knows how many to expect. Sheep/Goat Weigh-In Saturday, April 18th Maquoketa FFA Building State Fair families, please bring your animals between 9am-10am. Families who are exhibiting only at County Fair please bring your animals between 10am-Noon. Families who will be weighing in a large number of animals (15 or more) please contact Katie at the CEO in advance of the weigh-in to make arrangements for a time to weigh-in. Food Safety Quality Insurance (FSQA) Training 4-H ers and FFA members who plan to exhibit beef, bucket bottle calf, swine, dairy, goat, sheep, poultry, and rabbits will need to be FSQA certified by July 1 there will be no exceptions to this deadline. Training option certification is valid for exactly one year the date of the training. Grade is determined as of January 1, th to 6th grade: Must attend FSQA training every year 7th to 9th: Can either attend a training each year or pass the Intermediate test. Test certification is valid until January 1st of the 4-Her s 10th grade year. 10th to 12th grades: Can either attend a training each year or pass the Senior test. Test option certification is valid until December 31 after the 4-H er s 20th birthday. 5 New/Updated Livestock Rules for 2015 GOATS 1. NEW: All market wethers must be uniformly clipped with 3/8 inch length of hair or less above the knee and hock joints to include the head, excluding the tail. All meat goats should arrive on the Fairgrounds clipped and show ready. 2. NEW: All goats must have scrapies tag in ear at weigh-in. No scrapies tag numbers may be used in 4-H Online for identification. 3. REMOVED: All goats must be wethers or does to show, except in the billy class. 4. REMOVED: Meat Goats Junior Classes 12 months-15 months old, 15 months-18 months old, 18 months-24 months old 5. REMOVED: statement after Senior Meat Goats- (Does in milk or that have freshened) SHEEP 1. UPDATED: There will be a $10 scanning charge for each production lamb weigh-in at fair. The fee will be deducted from the checks when the animals are marketed. 2. UPDATED: Class 161N Ram Lamb (under 8 months) changed to 161N Commercial Ram Lamb (under 8 months) 3. NEW: All other sheep other than market must have eartag or tattoo plus scrapies tag in ear. All sheep must have scrapies tag in ear at weigh-in. No scrapies tag numbers may be used in 4-H Online for identification. 4. NEW: Certificate of Registry must correspond with association tag in ear and be presented at check-in to be eligible to show. Only the original registration paper will be accepted. No faxes or copies will be allowed. Registration papers must be in the 4-H ers name or show a logical family relationship (i.e. John Smith Family is acceptable; Sunnyview Farms is not acceptable). 5. NEW: Add Class- 161O Purebred Ram Lamb (under 8 months) SWINE 1. UPDATED: Exhibitors may show the maximum of three market (open) pigs, two commercial gilts, three derby pigs, and one pen of three. A maximum of six pigs may be brought to the fair. Individual pigs cannot be shown in both derby and market classes. 2. NEW: Exhibitors will sign up for the Silent Auction at Pre-Entry Day. 3. NEW: At the discretion of the Swine Committee, classes may be combined if there are not enough animals to make a full class. 4. NEW: Add Class 1704 Derby Pig 5. NEW: Add Class 1705 Share-A-Pig BUCKET BOTTLE CALF 1. UPDATED: Calves must be purchased and in possession of the youth within 2 weeks of birth. 6 HORSE/PONY 1. NEW: Exhibitor Apparel: A. Exhibitor numbers are to be worn on the exhibitor s back only in halter/showmanship classes. In performance classes, including timed events, exhibitor s numbers are to be worn on both sides of the saddle pad or unobstructed on their back. B. All 4-H youth participating in any riding classes must wear American Society of Testing Materials (ASTM) and Safety Engineering Institute (SEI) approved headgear with chinstrap and properly fitted harness while mounted and riding, including warm up. Every Time Every Ride. No caps, hats, or scarfs will be allowed to be worn under the helmet. C. English Attire- Hunt Seat: ASTM/SEI approved helmets with fastened chin straps are required at all times when mounted. Clothing must be clean, neat, and approved for hunter classes. Riders must wear coats, boots, and breeches. Clean shirts with stock and pin or ratcatcher and choker preferred. The coat should be any tweed or melton (conservative wash jackets in season) acceptable for hunting. Breeches should be of traditional shades of buff, gray, rust, beige or canary (jodhpur included), and high English boots or jodhpur boots should be worn. Spurs of the unrowelled type, gloves, crops or bats are optional. The 4-H armband or chevron is mandatory and the armband MUST be worn on the upper left arm. D. Western Attire- clothing must be neat and clean. Riders shall wear ASTM/SEI approved helmets and boots. A solid white or colored, button or snap front, long-sleeved, collared shirt is required. The following is prohibited: personalized logo, embroidery (excluding shirt brand logo), zippers, sheer or lace fabric, embellishments, bling of any kind, including but not limited to sequins, rhinestones, chains, etc. Shirts must be tucked in. A necktie, kerchief or bolo tie are permitted, but not required. Sleeveless shirts or blouses, turtleneck sweaters, sweater vests, etc. are not permitted. Pants must be blue jeans and belt under the loops is recommended. The 4-H armband or chevron is mandatory and the armband MUST be worn on the upper left arm. Hair must be neat and securely fastened if long, so as not to cover the rider s number. E. Shorts are prohibited to be worn by exhibitors while mounted on a horse. F. Penalties- exhibitors who violate the dress code will be dropped one ribbon group. In the interest of safety when you are mounted, you must wear a helmet, boots, long pants and appropriate attire and the horse must be properly tacked. The includes in the warm-up arena. Any dispute will result in disqualification from your classes. 2. UPDATED: Horses must be under control at all times during the day. Any horse that is unmanageable (bucks, kicks, rears, runs off) will be excused from the ring. If after three attempts, the horse/pony will still not enter the ring, the horse /pony and rider will be excused from the class. Decision to be made at the discretion of the Horse Committee. 3. REMOVED: Exhibitors will be required to wear an ASTM/SEI approved safety helmet at all times when on the back of a horse during a 4-H sponsored event. 4. REMOVED: Exhibitor # must be worn on his/her back. 7 Community & State Opportunities 2015 State 4-H Camps Start Your Adventure Here! Young people grades 5-8 in the school year have three special-themed 4-H camps designed especially for them. These statewide camps will be held at the Iowa 4-H Center near Madrid. While exploring the special themes, campers will live in a camp community for five days and four nights, enjoying traditional camp favorites like swimming, canoeing, hiking, climbing, and campfires. Each camp will also include an opportunity for campers to visit programs and facilities on the Iowa State University campus in Ames. The dates and themes of the three camps are: June State 4-H And My World Camp; Campers will choose a specialized educational track to learn about other cultures, develop nutrition knowledge and culinary skills, or strengthen leadership skills July 5-9 State 4-H Science Explorers I; Campers will choose a specialized educational track exploring science and technology, nature, or plant science and agriculture. July State 4-H Science Explorers II: Campers will choose a specialized educational track exploring science and technology, animal and veterinary science, or plant science and agriculture. Registration cost is $350 for 4-H members, $380 for non-members, and includes all meals, lodging, and special programming costs. Financial assistance for youth to attend 4-H camps at the Iowa 4-H Center is available from the Iowa 4-H Foundation Deadline to apply for financial assistance is April 25. Preliminary information on State 4-H camps has been posted to the 4-H Camping website camping with more to come as program details are finalized. Link to the online registration form will be posted in March. The Jackson County Fair Board and Association is looking for youth who would be interested in joining as Junior Members.
