5 Introducing the 2007 American Junior Simmental Association Foundation Donation from Gateway Simmental! Pick of the Herd to benefit the ASA/AJSA Foundation! The Simmental business has been very good to the Butcher family at Gateway Simmental. Our family has been committed to this great breed of cattle since the first Simmental cross calves were born here in the spring of Our whole philosophy and experience has been built around this breed and association. Emmet Butcher based a significant amount of his life around working to make Simmental an American success story. He liked nothing more than brainstorming and debating his vision of what would make the breed better. He spent two different tenures as a member of the ASA board of directors. He left our ranch in a position to be handed over to the next generation with his passing in the spring of Now it is managed and operated by his widow Darlene and sons Jim and Tom. Hopefully, down the road we will be fortunate to incorporate the next generation. As in most businesses, change is a given and success is a function of how we adapt and change with it. We have been fortunate to be able stay ahead of the curve and still be in business after 33 years of the good and bad times. We are finishing up the best year Gateway Simmental has ever had. We sold 220 bulls for just under $3500 a head and sold 250 head of breeding females private treaty. Our herd has grown to 700+ cows that calve and we are breeding around 1100 head total per year. Currently we are living through a time when the demand curve for Simmental genetics is seriously shifting to the right. We have patiently been doing our homework and waiting a long time for underlying demand growth to be coming from the rancher and feedlot levels. From a cycle standpoint, we are entering another era of good times in this breed and it is up to us as breeders and an association to sustain it as long as possible. Our hats go off to all of you that have made this trend a reality. The Gateway program is totally focused on building genetics that offer profitability to the end users. We have a breed that has a lot to offer from both the maternal and terminal aspects. It is very important for us to offer genetics that will improve many traits and balance both the production and terminal traits. We may be greedy, but believe through selection we can multiply cattle that excel in both aspects. We work really hard to let our cattle perform to their ability in large contemporary groups. This way we can find the REAL cream and it will rise to the top. We feed and carcass test some of our sire identified cattle through the feeding phase each year. We sell them on value based grids finding their true value in the beef. Many of those cattle have turned heads among feedlot owners and will create more demand for Simmental based genetics. Another new item the association has implemented that can have a huge impact over time in simplifying decisions among cattlemen is the API and TI indexes. They will also serve as a means of keeping us as breeders honest and not chasing single traits. With all that said, we think that you can support the foundation and find a female in our heifer calves that can move your program forward. In order for you to make the best decision in getting the right heifer, we would advise waiting until after July 20th, 2007 to make your selection. The heifers will be bred and ultrasounded for pregnancy and calf sex.
