1 IN THE RING The Official Publication of Arizona National Livestock Show, Inc. December 2015 Unprecedented Growth and Reaching the Next Level Growth is never by mere chance; it is the result of forces working together - J.C. Penney The 68th edition of the Arizona National is just days away and we look forward to seeing all of you December 27, 2015 January 1, 2016 followed by our ANLS Horse Show January 2-7, arrive on the fairgrounds December 27th. Many of our volunteers will be here at O dark thirty to greet more than 1000 drivers, 1000 trailers, and thousands of stock show family members from more than 25 states. To add further to those opportunities, we have not yet counted our Open Show or all the exhibitors participating in the dozens of contests offered during the show. During the spring of 2014, the Arizona National Livestock Show established a plan for tomorrow framed by the Vision Statement To provide the premier national livestock show EXPERIENCE while showcasing Arizona and young leaders. We have cultivated that vision and our Mission Statement of Growing the Future and now we begin harvesting the efforts of our toil. As of this writing, it is my pleasure to announce that our Livestock Show is experiencing unprecedented growth! We have, as promised, established an on-line entry program for livestock exhibitors and after completing our first entry deadline of October 31, for Junior Livestock only, the numbers are in and they are to say the least, shocking! The number of junior exhibitors entering the show compared to last year is up by an astounding 50%. A total of 901 youth and their families, from throughout the United States, have entered livestock of all species representing an equally impressive 46% increase of actual livestock over last year. Junior Breeding Gilts alone are up by a phenomenal 97%! To put it in perspective, that means more than 300 additional trucks and trailers will This uncharted growth changes the dynamics of how we approach everything we do. We have certainly reached a new era. All segments of the show will be impacted. Our valuable volunteers will manage the entire process with our staff, partners, contractors, sponsors, judges and leadership. Our growth is substantial; our challenge is exciting. Arizona is the destination for thousands in December and will be the showcase of the beautiful Southwest. As always, we are dedicated to honoring our past and celebrating the future. As our ANLS President Dean Fish has suggested, "please consider becoming a member and volunteer at The Vacation Show ; fast becoming America s Premier Livestock Show EXPERIENCE!" Thanks to all those that are making the Next Level possible! Michael Bradley Executive Director

I hope that you are as excited as I am to compete, attend, exhibit, participate or volunteer this year. We have implemented many ideas that have come from members or participants in this edition of the show. We have tweaked some stuff in an attempt to make the show better. Many thanks to all of you that have participated in these discussions and serve on a committee. I am very happy to tell you that we have added to our endowment this fiscal year in order to Grow the Future. While we are dependent on the generosity of the Arizona State Legislature and the Governor, we have to ensure that we have a safety net if these resources are reduced in the future. I urge you to ask any of our Executive Committee about how you may help here. By the time you read this, our annual membership meeting will have come and gone. Many thanks to all of you that have pledged your support to us and our vision by signing up as a member. As a member, I hope that you are proud of the progress we are making. Many, many people dedicate countless hours to implement the ideas and suggestions that come from our members and exhibitors. The vast majority of these hours are volunteered and I know we cannot thank them enough. The Arizona National Livestock Show has been an important part of my life ever since I can remember. As a ranch kid, my vacations revolved around bull sales, livestock shows or shipping. My family exhibited Hereford cattle and the Nationals was always a highlight of the year. As soon as I was eligible, I showed heifers and steers in the junior division. My county team judged in the livestock judging contest and many of us purchased steers and heifers at the sales. The only barrow I ever raised was for the Arizona Nationals. Later, after I began my career as an Extension Agent, I volunteered and became a paid member of ANLS. I eventually became part of the Executive Team and am glad to pay back the stock show for all of the opportunities I had here. What we are doing today is no different than it was way back then for young people. For many exhibitors, ANLS is the only major Stock Show experience they will ever have. That is exactly why it s important that we provide high quality learning opportunities for young people. I thank those leaders and volunteers that made that possible for me and so many others. Join our team in Growing the Future. The monetary pay will be nonexistent, but the impact you can make on a ranch kid, urban visitor, out-ofstate exhibitor or scholarship recipient is priceless. Cheers, ANLS PRESIDENT 2 Published Quarterly by The Arizona National Livestock Show 1826 W. McDowell Road Phoenix, AZ (602) * Information@anls.org Dean Fish ANLS President

3 AMBASSADOR CORNER Greetings Arizona Nationals Members, Exhibitors and Sponsors! Do you have your calendars marked? The 68th annual Arizona National Livestock Show is approaching fast: December 27, 2015-January 1, 2016! As the fall starts to wind down, I ve had the chance to reflect on how blessed I was to be able to spend time with family, friends, and be able to attend several events on behalf of the Arizona National Livestock Show. While traveling this fall, I was able to attend the Coconino, Santa Cruz, and Cochise County fairs, as well as the Arizona State Fair. During several of the fairs, I had the opportunity to serve as a Round Robin judge, Livestock Judging contest official, as well as assist with the Junior Livestock Auctions. It was amazing to see the youth of Arizona putting forth such an effort to showcase their hard work and dedication that was put into their 4-H and FFA projects. Congratulations to all of the Arizona National Livestock Show premier exhibitors from the fall county fairs, job well done! It was a pleasure to also represent Arizona National at the Morrison Ranch Heritage Day held at the Arizona Farm Bureau Office in October. ANLS AMBASSADOR Just recently, I had the opportunity to participate in selecting the slogan for the 68th Arizona National Livestock Show! Stay connected with Arizona National and get excited for the year ahead of us! See you on the road! Best regards, Justen Ollendick Arizona Nationals Ambassador Junior Market Auction January 1, 2016 BBQ 12:30 pm & Auction 1:30 pm 3

4 Cowboy Classics Featured Artist Tim Harmon was born June, 1946, and has lived all of his life in Arizona. He worked for a few years on a ranch in New Mexico but has done most of his cowboying in Arizona. He still loves to work with cattle and horses. He raises horses and cattle on a small ranch in the Tonto Basin area in Arizona. Tim has always loved to draw. He tried to paint but found he was slightly color blind and so that didn t work out well. From the time he was a young boy he whittled and loved to work in the three dimensional. Once he started working with clay he knew he was hooked. Mostly self-taught, he was able to take a couple of workshops from two great sculptors with Cowboy Artists of America, John Coleman and Mehl Lawson. Tim and his wife, Frankie, and enjoy meeting people and traveling with his work. Tim has been lucky to receive several awards. He has received a sculpture award for the last three years from the Phippen Museum, a gold award for his piece Switchback from Western Artist of America, the Joe Beeler award from Cowboy Artists of America. Harmon was honored in 2013 to receive the Phippen Foundation Award and his piece Mustang is now in their permanent collection. Tim's work is in several galleries and can be viewed on his website He will be showcasing several pieces of his work at the Cowboy Classics Western Art & Gear Show December 29-31, 2015, in the Wesley Bolin Building at the Arizona State Fairgrounds during the Arizona National Livestock Show. Tim will be honored at the Western Gala on December 28 as the Featured Artist. Cattlemen's Day has been an annual event for years at Arizona National Livestock Show and with the support from the Arizona Farm Bureau, Farm Bureau Financial and the University of Arizona the event was expanded last year. We are honored to have their continued support to bring back Cattlemen's Day again this year even stronger! Dan Faulkner, PhD, Extension Beef Specialist with the University of Arizona, will be presenting Cattleman's College. This year, the topics will include Using Brangus Genetics or Other Breeds and EPD to Select Bulls for Use in Arizona and Improving Reproductive Performance on Arizona Ranches. The program will be held at 10:00 am. While you are in attendance please take a moment to welcome our special guest, Dr. Tommy Perkins, Executive Vice President of the International Brangus Breeders Association. The day's events will include the Working Ranch Horse Competition at 9:00 am chaired by Kyle Best, and the Ranch Replacement Heifer Show & Sale chaired by Rick Lehman and Clary Parsons of Marana Stockyards. This year there will be an opportunity for a limited number of horses to be a part of the Replacement Heifer and Ranch Horse Sale at 1:30 pm.
