Scours is a term for diarrhea; another term that may be applied to this disease is enteritis, which means inflammation of the intestinal tract. While cattle of any age can develop diarrhea, most cases of calf scours occur under one month of age, with the majority occurring between roughly 3 and 16 days of life. There are a variety of causes of scours in baby calves. Most of these are infectious agents. Viruses: Examples include rotavirus and coronavirus, bovine virus diarrhea (BVD)? Parasites such as Cryptosporidium and coccidia Bacteria: Certain strains of Escherichia coli, Salmonella, and Clostridium perfringens Scours is often caused by more than one of these infectious agents acting together. Overcrowding is a major contributing factor to calf scours. Overcrowding causes the number of these infectious agents in the environment to increase dramatically. Certain dietary items may result in diarrhea. These include excess milk production by the dam (the calf ingests more than it can digest), ingestion of foreign objects such as dirt and sand, and from people feeding things that baby calves can t digest, such as molasses or table sugar (sucrose). How do scours harm the calf? The primary harm from scours is loss of water and electrolytes (body salts) in the diarrhea. This loss of water and salts creates dehydration and alteration of the acid-base balance of the bodily fluids. Inflammation of the intestinal lining impairs the calf s ability to digest nutrients, creating weight loss and the potential for hypoglycemia (low blood sugar). If untreated, these changes can be severe enough to result in death. In addition, certain bacteria (certain strains of Salmonella and Clostridium perfringens) can release toxins that cause harm to multiple vital organs in the calf. How do baby calves become infected with the infectious agents that cause scours? Research has shown that a substantial proportion of normal, Official Publication of the MHBA

8 healthy-appearing adult cattle can shed many of the infectious agents that cause calf scours; the agents are mostly shed in fecal matter. This shedding is particularly common for rotavirus, coronavirus, and Cryptosporidium. In a landmark study, shedding of these two viruses in the normalappearing feces of healthy, pregnant beef cows was found to increase as the pregnant cows approached the calving date. Shedding was heaviest by heifers, and shedding tended to increase after cold weather. Further, healthy older calves can become infected with these agents, remain otherwise healthy, and shed large numbers of these agents into the environment, thereby contributing to accumulation of these agents in high enough numbers on a ranch that a calf scours outbreak ensues. What are the common signs of scours? Watery stools that may be brown, green, yellow, or grey in color. Occasionally, flecks of blood and mucus may be evident in the stools. Rust colored or very bloody stools are often associated with infection with Salmonella, coccidia, or Clostridium perfringens. The calves are often weak and depressed, and may lose their desire to nurse. The calves develop a sunken-eyed appearance as a result of dehydration. The bony prominences of their hips, shoulders, and ribs may become more apparent as the calves dehydrate and burn their body fat supplies. The calves may stagger or sway as they walk; this often reflects weakness, low blood sugar concentrations, and/or alteration of the acid-base balance of their bodily fluids. The calves may become too weak to stand. Death typically occurs within a day if treatment is not initiated. Depending on the cause(s) and the severity of the infection, a case of scours in a calf can last 1-2 days or as long as 2 weeks. How can scours be treated? It is important to note that some infectious agents that make calves ill can also make people sick. People working with scouring calves should wash their hands before and after handling calves, their feed, or their bedding. Ideally, people working with these calves should wear waterproof outer boots that can be cleaned with soap and water and disinfected with Lysol after use. People working with scouring calves should wear coveralls or a dedicated set of working clothes and change these before handling other calves or returning to the ranch office or house. People with immune system disorders, pregnant women, and very old or very young individuals should not come into contact with scouring calves, their bedding, feeding utensils, or the clothing of individuals who have handled these calves. It is important to feed and perform daily chores for the healthy animlas before treating the sick calves with scours. Ideally, the person treating the sick calves should not work the healthy calves. Whenever possible, scouring calves and their dams should be isolated from healthy calves and from pregnant cows. The highest priority in treating scours is to give back to the calf the water and electrolytes that it has lost in scours this is called fluid therapy. This corrects dehydration, restores the normal acid-base balance, and replaces salts in the calf s bodily fluids. There are two primary methods for providing water and electrolytes: 1) By oral administration. This option is most appropriate for scouring calves that are still able to stand and who are alert enough to follow their dams and move away when approached. Since most beef calves will not accept being fed by a bottle, water and electrolytes are most often delivered by an esophageal feeder. Learn how to properly use an esophageal feeder. Electrolyte powders that have been prepared by veterinary pharmaceutical manufacturers are carefully balanced to provide the correct proportions of salts relative to water for optimal benefit to the calf; these are recommended over homeprepared recipes. Many different products exist, but in general, the most effective products contain salts, dextrose (to improve blood sugar concentration in the calf), and either bicarbonate or acetate to restore acid-base balance. Consult with your veterinarian to find an appropriate product, and a target volume to administer for the average baby calf on your ranch. 9 ing the recommended amount of powder to the recommended amount of clean water as directed on the product label. Adding more or less powder than what is prescribed can cause additional health problems for the calf. Mixing electrolytes with milk or solutions other than clean water is not recommended. Depending on the size of the calf and the severity of the scours, 2 to 8 quarts (roughly equal to 2-8 liters) of electrolytes may need to be administered each day. Typically, the total volume of fluid is divided into two or more feedings per day. As a rough rule, most average-sized beef calves will require approximately 4 quarts (~ 4 liters) of oral fluids per day until the scours resolves. 2) By intravenous administration. This route of fluid administration is typically reserved for those calves that are too weak to stand or too lethargic to follow the dam or avoid being caught. The fluids are typically administered through a catheter placed in the jugular vein. Although some experienced lay personnel can place a catheter in a scouring calf s vein, this is most often performed by a veterinarian or veterinary technician. The fluids that are used for intravenous administration are purified and carefully balanced with the appropriate balance of salts and dextrose (for blood sugar). Occasionally, these fluids are administered under the calf s skin. The volume to be given depends on the calf s size and the severity of the scours. Nutritional and thermal support: A calf with severe scours may not want to nurse much in the first day or two of the illness. Most calves will regain their appetite with appropriate fluid therapy, as described above. However, since scours can last several days, baby calves who fail to nurse or be fed milk for that duration of time are at risk of starvation. Consult with your veterinarian to develop a feeding regimen for scouring calves. Thermal support implies providing deep bedding, shelter from wind, rain, and snow, and even blankets for the scouring calf, so that it does not experience excessive cold stress on top of its existing disease. Intestinal protectants, such as Kaopectate or Pepto-Bismol, may provide some level of relief from nausea, as in people. Similarly, calves with fever or signs of abdominal discomfort may benefit from nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs; however, many of these have side effects, and it is important that you discuss drug selection and dosage with your veterinarian. Some veterinarians advocate administration of live, helpful bacterial cultures called probiotics. These can range from commercially-prepared cultures to plain yogurt. On the other hand, antibiotics may be used to treat scours caused by certain agents, or to treat or prevent the development of superimposed infections, such as bacterial pneumonia, in the scouring calf. Consult with your veterinarian to determine the criteria that he or she feels should be applied when considering antibiotic administration for scouring calves. There is not a uniform, one-fits-all policy for this topic. How can calf scours be prevented? Because many of the infectious agents that cause calf scours are shed by healthy cows and calves, it is not considered practical to expect to prevent scours from ever occurring on a ranch. Rather, a target should be to have no more than 2-3% of calves born each year develop scours. Maintain a clean calving area. Do not calve on pastures where cows have been kept in large numbers for long periods of time. Segregate calves by age to prevent passage of infectious agents from apparently healthy, older calves to newborns. Optimal prevention of calf scours requires integration of sound genetic selection, pasture management, nutrition, immunization, and basic husbandry practices. 12 MHYF Board Approves Guidelines for Junior Show Funding Your Foundation Board has been working this fall to develop guidelines for Junior Show Funding. This has been an area that has shown a great deal of interest, especially with the addition of the Miniature Hereford Junior National Show, the first of which was held in Denver June and which was funded by a grant from the Foundation and many generous donations. Our Guidelines follow below. Show managers please take note, if you are going to apply for funds from the Foundation, we need your request three months prior to the show! 1. Show Managers / Superintendents are required to request funds for their Junior / Pre-Junior shows no less than three months prior to the show date. 2. The maximum amount to be awarded from Foundation Funds is $ per show. 3. Donations made to the Foundation that are designated to a specific show will be credited to that show and paid out to the Show Manager or designated person, or used to pay submitted invoices. 4. Shows having designated support will be less likely to need or qualify for Foundation funds. 5. The Miniature Hereford Junior National Expo, our one sponsored show, is excluded from the $500 cap. 6. Funds approved will be paid out upon presentation of invoices for expenses for the show. Suggestions And Help Needed! Your Foundation would like your suggestions for programs to develop for our junior members. Also Pat Underhill, Director of Grants, is looking for members who are experienced with Junior Ag programs to join her Committee. 16 Evaluate Udder Soundness Soon After Calving to use as Culling Criteria by Glenn Selk, OSU Professor Emeritus, Oklahoma State University Every year at preg checking time, ranchers evaluate cows and make decisions as which to remove from the herd. One criteria that should be examined to cull cows is udder quality. Beef cattle producers are not as likely to think about udder health and shape as are dairy producers, but this attribute affects cow productivity and should be considered. It may be easier to be accurate in your culling decisions, if you exam the udder soundness of the cows shortly after calving when they are at the peak of lactation and the udder is as large as at any time. Take time now during the peak of lactation to write down which fall-calving cows have unsound udders. The heritability estimates of udder characteristics are variable. A study done in Brahman cattle for the heritability of udder soundness indicated that progress could be made by selecting for udder soundness. They reported that 25% of the differences in udder soundness was due to genetics. Beef Improvement Federation Guidelines have suggested that the heritability of udder soundness in beef cattle is estimated at.16 to.22 which means that some progress can be made by selecting against unsound udders. Recent new research at Kansas State University (Bradford, 2014 KSU Cattlemen s Day) with large numbers of Hereford data has given even greater hope that improvement in udder quality can be made. They found heritabilities of.32 for overall udder score,.31 for suspension, and.28 for teat size. Plus, genetic correlations between traits were strong (.83). This means that selection for one trait (teat size or suspension) will result in improvement in the other trait. An evaluation system for udder soundness has been developed and used by some breeds. Teat shape and udder suspension are the two primary characteristics evaluated. Below are drawings representing unsound udders on the left and sound udders on the right. The first two drawings are teat shape. The very funnel shaped teat may have been mastitic in the past. Newborn calves will find it difficult to nurse such a teat. Image 3 Image 4 Udder Suspension (above): Weak udder suspension leads to pendulous broken-down udders that make it very difficult for young calves to nurse. Both cows on the left would be excellent candidates for culling at the next weaning of their calves. Katherine is a writer, biologist and preservationist, who began painting in She studied in Dayton Ohio, where she was an exhibiting member of the Towne and Country Fine Art Center. She works exclusively in oil and paints a variety of subjects, but is beginning to focus on animals. She enjoys the challenge of capturing an animal s personality in paint. 21 What s in a Name? by Charlotte Williams You have a new calf! Now how do you choose a name? And what about that ear tattoo? Choosing a name for a calf can be exciting with so many options, but there are a few rules and conventions to consider before you send that registration paperwork in to the American Hereford Association. First, the AHA Rules and Regulations state: It is the responsibility of the owner to select names for his cattle. The name must not be more than 30 spaces long, counting spaces between words. For example, PRINCE DOMINO ADVANCE JUNO 133 is exactly 30 spaces long. Brands, symbols and commas cannot be used. Avoid duplicating names as no two Herefords should be named the same. It is the breeder s responsibility to avoid using names and prefixes that are being used by other breeders. Names should be appropriate for the gender of the animal and it is recommended that names reflect the line of breeding where possible. Embryo transfer calves will carry the designation embryo transfer (ET) at the end of their name, accounting for three spaces.the Association reserves the right to change the name assigned to an animal on an application for registry if the name submitted is deemed to be inappropriate. It is also good to know you can change the name of an animal once if it has not had any calves registered yet. Be sure to check registration papers when you get them back from the AHA they can make typos, too. Often the name of an animal is preceded by a prefix of one or two capitalized letters. These can be chosen to represent the ranch or the owner s initials or anything else you like, but it is recommended to avoid a prefix used by another breeder. Since these letters are usually used in every breeder s name of a new calf, it is helpful as a guide to who has bred the animal. Some examples among Miniature Herefords are: the prefix WW is used by WW Ranch, SS by Splitt Creek Ranch, J-W or JW s by J Bar W Ranch, SC by Salt Creek, and SHF by Sandy Hills Farm. As noted above, the designation ET after a name lets you know that the animal was an embryo transfer. Some breeders also use the tattoo number as part of the name. Again, the AHA Rules and Regulations state: Calves must be tattooed before application for registry is made. Each breeder may devise his own plan or system of tattoo identification using either numbers or letters or a combination of both. Any marks other than numbers or letters, however, are not permitted meaning brand marks, symbols, etc. cannot be used. Duplication of tattoos within your herd is strongly discouraged as tattoos are frequently used by breeders as a primary form of identification. Duplication can lead to much confusion for breeder and the Association office alike. The tattoo in one ear shall be limited to a maximum of eight characters. Although eight characters are allowed, we have found that four or five is the most a Miniature Hereford ear can easily handle. Although the tattoo can be any combination of letters and numbers, some breeders prefer to use a letter to designate the year, as recommended by the Beef Improvement Federation. In this numbering system for a herd International letters are designated for each year of birth. This option is easy to use in conjunction with numbers. For example, Z001 and Z002 might be used to indicate the first and second calf born in the year A 1991 B 1992 C 1993 D 1994 E 1995 F 1996 G 1997 H 1998 J 1999 K 2000 L 2001 M 2002 N 2003 P 2004 R 2005 S 2006 T 2007 U 2008 W 2009 X 2010 Y 2011 Z 2012 A 2013 B 2014 C 2015 D 2016 E 2017 F 2018 G 2019 Note: The letters I, O, Q, and V are not used. Some breeders also like to use all or part of the sire s or dam s name in the calf s name, especially if one or the other is particularly fine. This convention can help track the calf s pedigree for the breeder and any potential buyers. Obviously, it is unethical to use a Champion s name when naming a calf that is not one of the progeny, because it implies the calf is descended from that Champion. Beyond these guidelines, the field is open to just about anything. Calf naming can use any type of standard such as all flower names for one year and all mountain names the next and can be used to help track cow families. Perhaps you could name all of Annabelle s calves with names that start with A, or all George s calves with the name of English kings. 34 Region Reports Region 4 Happy new year to everyone from region 4, hope your holidays were great! We were busy here with 3 grandkids and new calves both have been a joy to have. The fall shows were so much fun from Oklahoma City to Kansas City then on to Louisville and now looking forward to Denver hope to see you all there. Julie Sandstrom Region 4 Director Region 5 Happy New Year 2015 is going to bring more excitement to our breed. I am looking forward to seeing many of you in January at the National Western Stock Show in Denver. The Iowa Beef Expo in February with the 2nd Annual MHBA Central National Miniature Hereford Sale to be held February 9th. This sale was hugely successful last year and we several lots have been consigned. We appreciate the efforts of Conover Auction Services to make this sale a success. The following weekend is the Iowa Beef Expo Show for all Iowa Juniors. Any animal purchased at the sale is eligible to show the following weekend. There are also many efforts being made to plan the Jr. Nationals in June. More details are available on the MHBA web page.
