7 POULTRY Chickens to be hatched on or after July 9th All poultry exhibited must be hand reared and tended solely by the pupil. (Home Hatched Pullets cannot be entered) Judges will be looking for: 1. The quietness of the bird you must handle the chicken a lot and talk to it 2. Cleanliness of beak, feet and vent 3. Feathers no dirt or broken feathers on show day. They must be hidden somehow, or be clipped. If there are broken feathers this will go against the bird in judging 4. Growth and feed Class 1 Best Pullet Judged on Rearing Junior Class 2 Best Pullet Judged on Rearing Senior Class 3 Consolation (for those children who have not won any ribbons) Class 4 CHAMPION PULLET DRAKE CUP
8 LAMBS Lambs born on or after 1 August 2017 may be entered. Lambs may participate in any event in the Annual Field Day held at Tauranga Racecourse on Saturday 28 th October Lambs if washed will be disqualified. Lambs should preferably be docked. Leading The programme for leading is the same as that used for calves and the child should become familiar with what is expected in the ring. This event is to assess the co-ordination and co-operation of the child and the lamb / goat. The lamb / goat is led anti-clockwise round the square. Each child leads the lamb around the outside of the pegs, stopping halfway to count three. The judge may vary the routine after all children have led, if it is necessary to separate possible place getters. This will be left to the discretion of the judges. Diagram for Leading Stop for 3 seconds 1. The child is to walk at the speed the lamb/goat usually walks 2. Keep to a straight line 3. The lamb / goats front legs should be in line with the child s legs 4. The lead from the lambs/goats collar/halter should not be too tight or too loose. The child should be able to steer the lamb by moving his hand to one side or the other. 5. The right hand should grip the rope, palm upwards. 6. The left hand should grip the rope, knuckles upwards, leaving a loop or slack rope between the hands 7. There should remain only about 30 45cm of tail end rope hanging free from the left hand. No loops or trailing ends 8. Pay particular attention to the fit of the halter. Watch the throat especially. A new halter for the first time on the day is not a good idea 9. All control should be exceeded by the right hand on the lead 10. Always stand upright and be proud of yourself and the lamb / goat The Following Actions Will Be Penalised: Releasing the right hand grip on the rope at any time. Touching the lamb / goat with the hand during the competition. Hitting the lamb / goat with anything. Jerking on the halter. Stopping, except as required by the judge (or the lamb / goat) Calling and Following: Select three points in the ring, one as start point for the event, child to be standing at second point while lamb / goat is held by reliable steward at the start. Lamb / goat to be called to second point at a signal from the judge and then to follow the child to finish or third point. If the event is proving difficult to choose between two or more lambs / goats, a variation can be made by getting the lamb / goat to follow while running to a fourth point in the ring.
9 Child Effort: Handling & Care - To be judged on how the lamb / goat handles in the child s care, leads etc and general disposition towards the child. Questions may be asked of the child with regards to the lambs / goats name, date of birth, what or how it has been fed or the description of something done while rearing it. Condition & Growth Lambs: Plenty of consideration is to be given to the age of the lamb. When judging in this event down cross or mutton breed lambs against white face or wool breed, consideration to be taken into account for the superiority of the lamb within it s own breed. Bloom and Appearance Amount of brushing or attention the lamb/goat has received (washing is not permissible), tail area may be sponged (or trimmed), cleanliness and general appearance of the lamb/goat Points for Lambs Child Effort Handling & Care 40 Condition & Growth 30 Bloom & Appearance 30 TOTAL 100 Class 7 Lambs & Goats - PRE-SCHOOLERS Class 8 Leading Junior Class 9 Leading Senior Class 10 Open Leading HEKE CUP (1 ST Placegetters from Classes 8 & 9 i.e. Leading Junior & Senior) Class 11 Calling & Following Junior Class 12 Calling & Following Senior Class 13 Best Lamb Calling & Following TAYLOR-LYONS CUP (1 ST Placegetters from Classes 11 & 12 i.e. Junior & Senior Calling & Following) Class 14 Consolation ( those unplaced in Classes 8 13 ( for those children who have not won any ribbons) Class 15 Child Effort DOBBS CUP Junior Class 16 Child Effort HOWARD CUP Senior Class 17 CHAMPION LAMB & RESERVE CHAMPION LAMB SJARDIN-NORRIS TROPHY (1 st placegetters from Classes 15 & 16 i.e. Child Effort Junior & Senior enter this Class) (2 nd placegetters to be available)
