Supported by Teacher/Supervisor Information Pack Welcome to the Schools Trail The Tesco Schools Trail initiative is filled to the brim with fun and educational things to see and do. New stops have been added to the trail and exciting new attractions to the Show. To add to this educational field trip, booklets for 3-7 years and 8 years and over have been produced to provide a detailed guide to each zone. The junior and senior packs are available on the Balmoral Show website on the Schools Zone page. They can be completed before they attend the Show or after the visit has been completed. You will be automatically entered in the Tesco for Schools and Clubs competition. Your school could win 20,000 vouchers that can be used towards computer, sports or electrical equipment for your school. Below you will find details on the various zones to visit and also some other areas and attractions that you may wish to check out. Remember to ask your group to stay together and to be really quiet when they are close to the animals, especially the horses! They are easily spooked! Have a great day at the Show.

Schools Trail Zones Zone 1 The s As you enter the showground s you will see the s on your left. At the Show you will see lots of different breeds including Clydesdales, Connemara Ponies, Miniature Horses and Children s Ponies being judged. Before the horses are judged their owners groom them, plait their manes and tails and the Clydesdales even get their hooves painted! Zone 2 - McDonalds Walk straight up the showground s and when you get to the Finning machinery stand turn left and then right and McDonald s are on your right. McDonald s are a major supporter of the Northern Ireland beef industry and work closely with local farmers. You can visit their interactive stand to learn more about their suppliers and the story of their food from the field right through to when they serve it in the restaurant. Zone 3 NI Good Food Pavilion Opposite McDonald s stand you will find the NI Good Food Pavilion. Do you know how many senses you have? We usually use our TASTE sense when eating and drinking but in the NI Good Food Pavilion, you can test all your senses! Come along and try The Taste Adventure where you can TOUCH, TASTE, SMELL, SEE and LISTEN to lots of exciting foods, all made in Northern Ireland! The children will receive their very own Taste Passport as a prize for doing so well! Zone 4 Kids Zone Exit the pavilion and walk straight ahead to the Kids Zone. In this area you will find bunji trampolines, a simulator and other kids entertainment such as the Children s Farm. In the farm you will see miniature ponies and donkeys, rabbits, pups, lambs, kids and even eggs hatching! The children can pet and feed the animals as well as get their faces painted. A sheep s coat is called a fleece. Wool is used in a variety of textiles and can be found woven or knitted. Check the programme for times of competitions. This area can be very busy especially when the championships are taking place so get here in plenty of time. 3

Zone 12 Cattle Lawn Exit the sale ring and turn right until you see the Cattle Lawn and turn right. Before the cattle get to the cattle lawn they are washed and brushed to look their very best. They all hope to be a champion animal and win a lovely red rosette. There are many different breeds of cattle on show such as Aberdeen Angus, Hereford and Simmental. On Friday the Dairy cows will be on show. 8 Useful Information Opening Hours The Show is open Wednesday 11 May Friday 13 May from 8.30am 8.00pm each day. Schools Trail Entrance The entrance and start of the Schools Trail is at Gate C, Lisburn Road. Here you will be met by Treasure Trails staff who will check your group admission voucher, detailing the number of children and adults attending, and they will ensure if wristbands were provided that all of your group are wearing them. This will help the staff to process your entry as quickly as possible, so that you and your group can enjoy your day. If you have booked a guided tour you will be introduced to your guide also at this point. Drop off / Parking information Coaches may drop off near to the front of the King s Hall (Lisburn Road) and also near to Gate F, Harberton Park. Coaches may park in Belfast Harlequins Rugby Ground, Deramore Park, Belfast BT9 5 JX. A free coach pass will be provided. There are park and ride buses from Harlequins Rugby Ground and also Boucher Road Playing fields. 8

Arriving by Public Transport There is a train station (Balmoral Halt) and bus stop (Metro 9) immediately outside the King s Hall, Lisburn Road entrance. From Great Victoria Station (situated in the Europa Bus Centre) the train ride only takes approx 5 minutes. Metro 9 departs from Donegall Square East and goes past the King s Hall Disabled Access The majority of public walkways in the showground are tarmac or concrete. Most public buildings have graded ramps or are accessible by wheelchair. The main exceptions are the Grandstand, where assistance may be required for the physically disabled, and the Balcony of the King s Hall where a lift is available but may not suit all sizes of wheel chairs. Mobility scooters and wheelchairs may be hired for use during your visit and can be reserved in advance. Shopmobility are located beside the Schools Trial entrance at Gate C, Lisburn Road. Park and Ride buses have wheel chair access. Show Features To get details of the various attractions at the Show please check out the show features page on the website Information Points You can ask for information in the following areas: Organisers Office, point A on map Show Office, point G on map Show Information, point E on map Lost child procedure The Balmoral Show is a very busy event and should a child get separated from their group we have a lost child procedure in place. If you wish to report a lost child please contact any member of security / event staff or please contact the Organisers Office/Control Room located within the King s Hall beside the front doors. 9

If a child is found they will be taken to the crèche between the King s Hall and the Nugent Hall until they can be reunited with their guardian. The crèche will advise the Organisers Office /Control Room when they have the child in their care and give a detailed description of the child. Should a child become lost for more than 30 minutes, the PSNI will be informed and requested to take over the search. Seating & Lunch Areas Unfortunately we do not have a specific area for kids to have their lunch as the showgrounds is so packed with animals, machinery, attractions etc. There are some seated areas available such as the Garden Village or in the Grandstand overlooking the Main Arena. There is lots of food and refreshments available at the Show but it can be very busy, especially at peak times. Bringing a packed lunch and having a picnic can be an excellent alternative. Hopefully the sun will be shining!! Toilets Toilet facilities are clearly marked on the map provided. Disabled access toilets are available in the King s Hall ground floor, Balcony, in the Link between the King s Hall and Nugent Hall and also in the Nugent Hall. First Aid Points First aid points are clearly marked on the map provided. Should you require medical assistance please contact a member of staff or go to a first aid point. Livestock Areas There are lots of animals to see at the Show but some areas are not suitable for groups of children. The main one is the Londonderry Hall where the Beef and Dairy cattle are stalled and prepared for showing. This hall is narrow and can be quite crowded with livestock exhibitors. You can see all these animals in the Cattle Lawn so you won t miss anything! Beef animals will be on show on Wednesday and Thursday and Dairy cattle on Friday. We hope you enjoy your visit. 10
