So as you look thru the bulls look for the genetic merit. Comparing weaning weights here to another operation would be like comparing race times in two different races. One a mountain race uphill and one a sea level flat race. Absent of similar conditions we use ratios, EPD information, and visual appraisal to select for superior animals and their characteristics that drive profitability. As expected, EPD s are utilized as a resource at Hot Shoe Red Angus; but traditional cowboy logic and practicality take precedence throughout the important decision making process. Real-world fundamentals of feet and leg structural correctness, udder quality, disposition, mothering ability, and visual performance are priorities. 5 PULMONARY ARTERIAL PRESSURE TESTING Pulmonary Arterial Pressure testing for high mountain disease in cattle. Also referred to as PAP testing, AKA Brisket disease. Brisket disease is a condition seen in cattle raised in high-altitude regions. At elevations from 5000 feet and greater. Most commonly found in areas of Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, and Wyoming. Because of the adverse effects to a rancher s bottom line due to death loss, PAP testing has been taking place for the past 10 years on all of the Hot Shoe Bulls. Genetics have also been closely monitored for 30 years now to avoid genetic lines with a history of brisket disease problems. Also, the cattle spend the summer at approximately 9000 feet elevation. This can be it s own kind of test. Many factors can contribute to the variation of PAP in cattle. Including breed, age, body condition, concurrent illness, environmental conditions, elevation, and genetics. Individual Animal differences appear to have a strong genetic component and can be partially mitigated by identifying high-risk individuals and by selective breeding. It is important in the valuation of any animal originating from a low altitude herd > 5000 feet to realize that it has a higher probability of experiencing high altitude affects then those raised in higher elevations. The innate resistance to high altitude is secondary to the effects of natural selection and the culling processes by the rancher. As a point of interest concerning the bulls in this sale, Ionophores Fed to cattle may temporarily increase the risk of pulmonary hypertension. In a pilot study an ionophore was fed to calves at the labeled dose for a period of six weeks, in a Colorado feedlot at an elevation of 5000 feet. No other changes were made in the cattle s diet or environment. The PAP results at the end of the six-week feeding trail resulted in 71% being a score of 45 or higher for PAP. A repeat PAP was taken one month after removal of the Ionophores and showed a mean decrease in the PAP of 6. Dr. Tim Holt to whom most of this research is accredited with, states that further work may be necessary regarding the effect of the ionophore. The sale Bulls were fed an ionophore during their development phase to combat any onset of coccidiosis. Based on the research we can project a 5 to 6 point lowering of the PAP score in 4 to 6 weeks after the sale. According to Dr. Holt s research scores below 42 can be used with great confidence at any elevation. Scores of 42 to 48 can be used with moderate risk. Scores greater than 49 should be avoided at higher elevations. 6 THE FULL FORCE BULL Full Force was injured this year and didn t provide us with many offspring. However, we are sure glad he was able to breed a few cows and sired the lot 1 bull! 7 THE MULBERRY SIRE GROUP The Mulberry sire group is a compilation of one direct son of Mulberry, as well as two grandsons. They were a nice piece of the purchase three years ago when we acquired the Lund Ranch Red Angus herd! 10 THE CHEROKEE CANYON SIRE GROUP Cherokee Canyon Do I need to say anymore? WOW! Where else in North America could you possibly find 2 direct sons of the maternal legend himself, Cherokee Canyon! The semen was set-aside in the tank waiting for the perfect opportunity for a flush to a top producing donor dam, but due to some unforeseen circumstances I had a group of heifers ready to breed and the semen I had ordered had not yet arrived. The decision was made to dip into the Cherokee Canyon supply, which resulted in two great bulls and three phenomenal females! 11 THE BLADE JR SIRE GROUP Blade JR is just one of those bulls that you just can t get enough females out of! Six years ago he was the Lund Ranches pick of our bulls. I always knew he was a standout, but I had no idea what was to come! Three years ago when I purchased the Lund herd I was able to get reacquainted with this bull. He was phenotypically a standout, and when we started going through paperwork we realized that countless daughters had been put back into the herd! I asked Scott about it, and he said, They make the best cows! After using the bull in our program he was right! They are long sided, deep bodied; easy fleshing females that are wedge shaped, feminine, and as good uddered as your can make one! Remember your bull is now only 11 to 13 months old. He has been on it for a test, and ration changes should be done gradually. It is good to let them harden up on pasture before breeding season begins. However, the pasture must be good and they still require extra energy and protein. If turned out on poor pasture or dropped off too fast they can lose weight rapidly. Research shows this causes a bull to produce poor quality semen and it also affects the bull s libido. It takes two months for sperm to develop and mature. Any stress conditions during that time can reduce the bulls fertilizing ability. 2. Don t expect a young bull to compete with older bulls or horned bulls. If intimidated by an older bull he won t breed effectively. If handled properly and not dominated by older Bulls a Young bull should service 20 to 25 females his first season. Size of the pasture and terrain also influence this. 3. Watch a young bull early in the season to detect any physical problems. A virgin bull can have inadequacies undetectable except through observation. 4. Maintain a good general health program, vaccinations, mineral, and parasite control. 5. Recondition your young bulls after the breeding season to allow them to mature to their genetic capabilities. This is a very critical age as they start losing their teeth at 18 to 24 months. Because of this, a young bull may eat slower and cannot utilize as rough of feed, or compete for feed as one with permanent teeth. De-worming your bulls can make a significant difference and is highly recommended. Research indicates that Bulls usefulness can be permanently hindered if not properly conditioned after uses a yearling. 12 Hot Shoe Red Angus 2nd Annual Bull Sale

13 THE DESIGNER SIRE GROUP The Design sire group is an outcross genetic base coming from the famed Sitz Angus Ranch program in Montana. The sons and grandsons of Elite Design are well-made, balanced, eye-appealing bulls that also boast balanced EPD profiles. Their Stayability EPD will climb considerably once the RAAA initiates the use of the BOLT system that incorporates cross breed values. Currently little to no value has been given to the outcross Red Angus cattle that utilize Black Angus genetics to improve the genetic base. 17 THE STING SIRE GROUP Sting was another bull that was acquired with the purchase of the Lund herd. He came to them through the Loosli program in Idaho. Unfortunately, we lost Sting during his first breeding season. Sting has the largest frame of the sire groups, but he filled out that frame well with tremendous rib shape and muscle expression. He also brought some young daughters with him to Hot Shoe, as he had been a top herd sire for Lund s prior to the herd purchase.
