We now have over 550 cows in the Sandhills. In the early 1960s, my father, Delbert Timperley, bought his first registered Angus cow and began AI ing with the popular bulls of the times. By the 70s, the Rito bloodline began to stand out for us. We continued to try the fashion bulls of the times, but couldn t find anything better that seemed to improve our herd like the Rito lineage. The proof is the domination of the Rito bloodline in our herd s pedigrees. I believe that the most important factor in today s cattle business is that your cattle gain weight on the least amount of feed. Doing that, they will maintain, reproduce, and be healthy throughout their lives on less feed. This is more important now, than ever, for today s cattlemen. The Aberdeen-Angus are the best at this of any breed of cattle, but I believe that many of the Angus bloodlines have moved away from this concept. The best compliment I have ever gotten about our cattle came from Tom Burke who recently looked at our cattle for this sale and said, These are Aberdeen Angus! I think RR Rito 707 and his progeny still make modern-day Aberdeen-Angus. We work hard to keep the true Angus type in our cattle. RR Rito 707 was one of the best bulls ever and his progeny have proved it over and over. Back in the 70s and 80s, Rito 149, Rito 72 and Jetliner were among the dominant performance sires and today the bloodline carries forward with Rito 707 of Ideal , SAV 707 Rito 9969, SAV Resource 1441 and Sinclair Entrepreneur 8R101. We are proud to introduce you to the next set of great Rito 707 progeny. They represent an unprecedented modern-day selection from this timeless sire line. We would like to thank Autumn Oaks Angus, Black Grove Angus, Graber Angus Farms, and Lake View Cattle Company for helping to make this project possible. We hope to see you at our sale. Sincerely, Gene Timperley FEED RATIONS I think everyone should know what the cattle are being fed because at SpringLake Angus we don t want it to be a big secret or deceiving. Like all good cattlemen, we feed what is available to make the best cattle at the cheapest price. Our cattle will work on any balanced ration. We are close to a potato factory and because potatoes work for us, we continue to use the by-products. All the other feed is standard to most feed rations. These cattle have NEVER HAD ANY CORN, only a very high moisture roughage ration. The 707 embryo calves were put together in a 100 acre pasture and due to the drought, the pasture ran short and we put a creep feeder in to last the season. The creep was a 16% protein pellet with no corn. The other bulls and heifers were put to pasture where there was plenty of feed and were offered no creep. The bulls are now all together and their feed ration to date per head is: 10 lbs. of hay (alfalfa and prairie hay), 30 lbs. potato mash (peelings and scraps) which is 60% moisture, and 16 lbs. of corn distillers which is 16% protein and 60% moisture. The heifers are getting 10 lbs. hay, 20 lbs. potato mash, 9 lbs. of corn distillers, 15 lbs. silage which is 50% moisture. Of course, this is what they have been worked up to since weaning.

Born more than 45 years ago in 1967, RR Rito 707 established himself as a common denominator in most performance bloodlines that continue to be prevalent in the Angus breed today. He dominated the 1968 PIC Bull Test at Stanford, Montana, as the top yearling weight and top-gaining bull with a gain ratio of 129 and sold two-thirds interest for $5,000 as the top-selling bull to the American Breeders Service AI Stud of Wisconsin and Pioneer Beef Cattle of Iowa. His very first progeny test group of 27 steers recorded an average daily gain ratio of 111 and graded USDA Choice. RR RITO Reference Sire A The progeny enrolled in the AHIR program over the course of the past four decades by this pioneer performance sire continue to compile an impressive average weaning ratio of 105 and an average yearling ratio of 105 while his daughters in production post a strong collective progeny weaning ratio of 102. A decade and a half after RR Rito 707 became an ABS sire, he could be found in one-third of the top 75 bulls in the 1984 National Sire Evaluation, a record that was not approached by any other sire of the time and has since become cemented into the foundation of most modern day performance bloodlines. RR Rito 707 remains the breed s top proven sire for his generation and beyond with a Weaning Weight EPD nearly 40 pounds greater than the estimated average of his birth year and a Yearling Weight EPD nearly 70 pounds greater. His famous early sons include the Pathfinder Sires Rito 707 of Ideal (Rito 149), Rito 707 of Ideal (Rito 72) and PBC 707 1M F0203. His famous later sons include Rito Idealist, Rito 707 of Ideal , Rito Revolve 0R5, Sinclair Legacy 3R9 and Sinclair Entrepreneur 8R101. Bred by the late master performance breeder Dale Davis at Rollin Rock Angus near Belgrade, Montana, RR Rito 707 is from the renowned Eriskay family that went on to also produce other important sires. Rito N Bar, his truly unique sire, was bred at the historic N Bar Ranch near Grass Range, Montana. Born in 1960, he was an original member of the ABS Stud and a recognized Certified Meat Sire who was especially noted for siring added muscling, leanness and growth. Eliminator 302, the paternal grandsire of RR Rito 707, was bred by W. J. Harrer and Sons at the famous Green Meadow Ranch near Helena, Montana from the highly regarded Eliminator line developed in the Henry Hanke herd at Hanover, North Dakota, and from the Bemindful Maid family that was imported from Scotland to Hartley Stock Farm at Page, North Dakota and would eventually produce DHD Traveler The linebred extended pedigree of RR Rito 707 further reveals a strong concentration of the best of Earl Marshall breeding. Lots of bulls have been called great because breeders have responded to publicity which proclaimed them so but two bulls of the Angus breed stand alone in greatness as determined totally by the achievement of their progeny. Earl Marshall clearly dominated the breed in the teens and twenties as indicated by the extent to which his progeny won the major shows. Today the National Angus Sire Evaluation is clearly dominated by RR RITO 707 descendants. Even though there is no paragraph in the NASE summary that even intimates that the above is true, if you rank the sires according to their progeny yearling EPDs and only consider those with maternal values over 100, you will find twenty-nine Rito 707 descendants among the top 100 sires. And if you rank the sires in the summary on maternal value considering only those with yearling EPD greater than 20 lbs., the Rito 707 descendants number 26. For a bull whose oldest progeny would now be 12 years old to be the progenitor of almost one-third of the meaningfully top sires of the breed (673 bulls in the summary) can in no way be accidental. It is real. It has commercial meaning. As indicated in another article in this paper, Prof. Knox of New Mexico said, Everyone believes in performance, but not everyone believes in the other man s test. Such is the case in interpretation of these results. R R Rito 707 was not a popular bull in the circles where bulls are commonly called popular or unpopular. Neither he nor more than one or two of his descendants ever hit the tanbark trail and it would have been disastrous for them to have done so. They are generally not built according to modern styles. They are not tall enough and carry too much depth and thickness all part of the proportions of volume cattle which adds to their winning performance competitions. Rito 707 was almost an accident which could easily not have happened. Dr. Ray Woodward was scouring the nation looking for prospective ABS stud bulls when he came across this totally different long bodied, muscular brute of a bull named Rito N Bar. He bought him because he was such a departure from the dumpy trend setters of the day and because his eye was trained in working with the Miles City experimental performance cattle. At the time you would be of almost questionable intelligence to associate yourself with that style of cattle in either the Hereford or Angus breeds. Nevertheless, Rito N Bar won his progeny test and landed in the ABS stud. He was used widely by Dale Davis and Martin Jorgensen. As his name implies, R R Rito 707 was born at Davis Rolling Rock operation in Montana. He began to amass performance greatness at an early age. He weaned with a 124 ratio against 51 contemporaries and was sent to Lloyd Schmitt s Production Indexing Center at Stanford, Montana where he had a gain ration of 129. PIC was the test of the day at that time and the A Performance Legend By Bob debaca bull attracted lots of attention. I was the program speaker prior to that sale though I had to leave before the sale. Anyway, 707 wound up in the ownership of American Breeders Service and Pioneer Cattle Co. and Jorgensen Bros., at something like $5200. Pioneer used 707 on the Toreby cows that they bought from Torsten and Edith Lagerstrom the cowherd which became the genetic nucleus or elite herd for Pioneer. The Lagerstroms had assembled a herd of Earl Marshall cows and had been ruthless in their quest for performance from this herd. The use of Rito 707 on these cows resulted in instant success. I was running the Iowa Beef Improvement Association at the time and was flabbergasted to see virtually a whole page of 1200 pound yearling weight bulls come off the computer. We were more used to 900 pound weights at the time. Jorgensen used 707 two or three years with Pioneer having a one year lead. Pioneer went directly into a concentrated line breeding program with 707 as the focal ancestor. Nine years after the bull was born we bought the heart of the elite herd in their dispersion and there were cows whose pedigree showed Rito 707 as the only grand sire. His progeny can stand line breeding. The next chapter of the R R Rito 707 story came to the forefront when his ABS commercial progeny test was completed. Again, coincidentally, I was a speaker at the ABS field day at the Leon Miller feedlot at Billings when the progeny groups were on display. The 707 progeny (27 straight Angus) weighed over 1100 pounds at 13 months and had a yearling ratio of 111. They were a fabulous set of finished steers. No other progeny group ratioed above 100. Two of the sires whose progeny were in the test went on to be name bulls though their records make no effort to be evident in the sire summary. One of them later brought $50,000 for one-third interest. The 707 progeny had beat his 130 pounds per head at a year. It is interesting to note that whereas Rito 707 s pedigree leaves most pedigree students rather cold, his ancestors enjoyed about five generations of Henke breeding unexposed to other than local popularity. Those with whom I ve talked said the Henke herd was known for big productive Angus. In generations prior to those at Henke, his sire side ancestors were strictly Earl Marshall breeding. His sire and dam line are shown below. The rest of the story is legend. Rito 707 amassed a progeny record, prior to AHIR becoming popular, which included 1049 progeny with a weaning ration of 105; 624 yearling progeny with a 106 ratio; 313 daughters in 31 herds with 1179 progeny at 103 ratio giving him breeding values of all with 99% accuracy. By some people s standards R R Rito 707 was just another bull and the wrong kind. But by commercial cattlemen s normal method of measuring pounds of saleable beef reflective of growth and maternal values, he had no peer.
