3 Hello families, The holiday season is upon us and I hope it has found you well. Burleigh County 4-H has been off to a great start. Members have been learning, serving, and growing in the first 3 months of the new 4-H year. I am currently at a national 4-H conference and it always makes me proud to be able to brag a little about the wonderful things our members and leaders and doing. The holiday season is a great time of year that reminds us of the wonderful people we have in our lives. I am thankful for the opportunity to work with such amazing youth and adults on a daily basis. The holiday season is also a great time to give back and support the community. There are several ways you can do this, to get those creative juices flowing, here are a few suggestions: Ring bells for the salvation army. This is such a fun activity and if you get the right location, you can be indoors. If you have younger kids in your club, split the shift into manageable time frames. Make cards. There are many different places you can make cards for. So many people in our community spend the holidays alone. A simple gesture of a handmade card can really brighten the holiday spirit. Places to consider donating them to include; the hospital, nursing homes, veterans, or troops overseas, just to name a few. Wrap gifts. Many people who are living in nursing homes or assisted living struggle to wrap gifts. Many of them would enjoy your help and company while doing this holiday activity. Adopt from the angel tree. There are families in our community who do not have the means to purchase gifts for their children. Many of these families participate in the angel giving trees. Use club money (or have everyone pitch in) to adopt a child or two. When we would do this growing up, we each had a set dollar amount and had a competition to see who could get the closest without going over. Go Caroling. Caroling is another way to bring holiday cheer to nursing homes. Contact the activities coordinator to set up a time. You can also go around a local neighborhood! These are just a few ideas of what can be done to help spread the holiday spirit. If your club does any service projects, please remember to send them to our office, so we can share with others (and so I can brag a little more). Happy Holidays Amelia

4 CLUB CORNER Information, Recognition and Opportunities for your Club! Congratulations Silver Colts! 5 CLUB CORNER Information, Recognition and Opportunities for your Club! Thank you to Marge Perkins and family for the generous donation to the Memorial Playground, in memory of Bud Perkins. Project Days Information will be available soon for the Quadcopter Project Day coming up on January 13, Thank you to all the families who helped with set up and clean up for the vendor show on Nov. 18. Funds raised from these booth rentals support the counties camp scholarships. Scholarship applications can found on our website and are due Feb. 1. Healthy North Dakota 4-H Club What a heartwarming time of year to include a Community Pride event on your Healthy ND 4-H log. Your club could donate goods to a local shelter or food pantry, send get-well cards to children in a local hospital, create health and beauty kits for women in a shelter or ring bells for Salvation army as some examples come to mind. We encourage you to celebrate The 4th Annual Family & Consumer Sciences (FCS) Day, "Dining In" for Healthy Families on Sunday, Dec. 3 rd! Families are asked to commit to making and eating a healthy meal together on December 3 rd. To make it easy for busy families, we suggest to use your slow cooker. Here s a healthy and warm recipe and it pairs well with baked tortilla chips, apple slices and low-fat milk! Happy holidays, Shaundra Slow Cooker Taco Soup 1 lb. lean or extra-lean ground beef 1 (15-oz.) can kidney beans, with liquid 1 onion, chopped 1 (15-oz.) can whole-kernel corn, with liquid 1 (16-oz.) can chili beans, with liquid 1 (8-oz.) can tomato sauce (low-sodium) 2 c. water 1 (4-oz.) can diced green chili peppers 2 (14.5-oz.) cans peeled and diced tomatoes (low-sodium) 1 pkg. taco seasoning mix (low-sodium) In a medium skillet, cook the ground beef until browned over medium heat. 7 Announcing the 2018 Rube Goldberg Challenge Who was Rube Goldberg? Rube Goldberg ( ) was a Pulitzer Prizewinning cartoonist who was best known for his cartoons of complicated machines doing simple tasks. Some of Rube Goldberg s fans took his cartoons and recreated the machines using junk they had around the house. These machines are called Rube Goldberg (RG) Machines and are now part of nationwide contests. Requirements for RG teams: A team must have at least three youth team members, but no more than ten. Each team must have at least two adult volunteer leaders. There will be a junior and a senior division contest. 4-H members in high school or above cannot be team members, but they can work with the team as a youth mentor. Any team can sign up to compete at the 2018 State Fair, teams do not have to win a county contest. Coming Soon A Rube Goldberg design challenge 2018 The Rube Goldberg Contest North Dakota is following Minnesota s example and organizing a Rube Goldberg contest for the guide and rulebook will be coming out soon so counties and teams can prepare for the 2018 state fair state fair. The Rube Goldberg challenge has youth not only employ physics and engineering, but humor and storytelling, to create their RG. Part of the contest also involves a journal where teams write about what they did each time they met to work on the machine. One of the best things about RG machines is that materials can be any junk you find around town or in your house so the activity is very low cost.
