2 Communication Arts The District Communication Arts Contest was held on May 30, 2017 in Mandan. Burleigh County had 12 4-H ers participate. Good job to all of the kids who participated! 1 st Place medal winners Cecilee Hill - Jr. Individual Commercial Scout Wheeler - Sr. Individual Commercial Mary Jane Hincks - Jr. Short Take Tatum Spadgenske - Jr. Individual Demonstration Scout Wheeler - Sr. Individual Demonstration Honorable Mentions Rowan Wheeler - Jr. Individual Demonstration Volunteers Needed for 2017 Achievement Days We are looking for volunteers for the following: Games: Tuesday, July 11: Static Night Games Wednesday, July 12: Public Viewing Thursday, July 13: Public Viewing We are looking for parents to help run games on Static Night. We have the games, just need help running them. The games we need volunteers for are: Floor Hockey, Dart Guns at a Target, Stick Horse Rodeo, and Geocaching. Public Viewing: 1 person per shift Wednesday 10AM-12PM 12PM-2PM 4PM-6PM Thursday 8AM-10AM 10AM-12PM 2PM-4PM 4PM-6PM Please call or Sara at , sara.j.fisher@ndsu.edu and schedule the time you are able to work, or which game you would like to run. Parents ~ The Pinterest For the Playground Committee recently met to discuss upcoming Pinterest nights. Pinterest Nights will be second Tuesday of each month, September-May. There will be a lot of exciting things to make for your home in the upcoming months!

Service Project Opportunity The Great Plains Food Bank is looking for individuals, local employers, civic organizations, youth groups, etc. to join local growers in gathering the harvest from the fields to fed to hungry neighbors. 4 CLUB CORNER Information, Recognition and Opportunities for your Club! 4-H Membership Cards If you are planning on going to the ND State Fair, stop in the Extension Office and pickup your 4-H Membership Card. Burleigh County 4-H is Turning 90! Bring your 4-H Memories to Achievement Days this year. We will have clovers to write your memories on. The clovers will be on display during Fun Night, October 1, It s Parade Time! Lincoln Days - Saturday July 15 th in Lincoln Parade setup starts at 10:30 in road in front of Tumbleweed/DJS/ Bank. Parade starts at 11 should be done by 11:45. After parade DJs restaurant is hosting a free lunch for parade participants and families. Please contact Marie Horning to RSVP can call or text.
5 Healthy North Dakota 4-H Club How fun to do a Field Trip meeting this month? The nicer weather makes it easier to take your club meetings outside. You could visit a state or local park to hold your meeting and it counts toward Healthy Club requirements. Check out the events at the ND Parks and Recreation Department on their website for even more fun ideas: full_calendar_events.html NOTE: Healthy ND 4-H Club forms for state-wide recognition are due to Sara Fisher at the Extension office August 15, You can your forms to sara.j.fisher@ndsu.edu. If you already have the following requirements complete, you may send your paperwork into the office now. * To be a recognized club, your group needs to do at least one healthy club activity during six or more regular meetings. During the 4-H year, your activities should include at least six of the eight different categories (setting, roll call, etc.). Shaundra Ziemann-Bolinske Extension Agent, Family & Consumer Sciences Fruit Kebabs With Dip Yields: six servings of dip Cut-up fruit of choice (a large variety is best) Skewers (wooden) 6 ounces low-fat cream cheese or Neufchatel 1 2 c. frozen, unsweetened, orange juice concentrate Beat cream cheese until soft. Add orange juice concentrate. Mix until incorporated. Skewer fruit. Pour dip over skewers or place in small cups for dipping. You may choose to add vanilla and sugar to taste. Per serving of dip: 110 calories, 7 g fat, 3 g protein, 10 g carbohydrate, 0 g fiber and 95 mg sodium. Total nutritional value of the skewers will vary based on the fruit used and amounts.

KIDS' SOUVENIR DECORATING Sunday, July 23-2:00 pm, State Fair Center Use your creativity to design your own State Fair Souvenir! This activity results in a one-of-a-kind, hand made picture frame for your child's Fair memories! Decorating materials will be provided, if a child wants to bring their own decorations they are sure welcome to do so.this is a great opportunity for those artistic fairgoers ages 3 to 14! Decorating will take place in the 4-H Hall of the North Dakota State Fair Center. KIDS' TRACTOR PEDAL PULL Tuesday, July 25-2:00 pm, KX Info Center Sponsored by United Community Bank of North Dakota is the ultimate pedaling competition! Miniature tractors are weighted and pedaled to victory in front of the KX Info Center. The kid in each age division that pulls the most weight is eligible to be in the state sanctioned Tractor Pedal Pull Championship later in the summer. Registration begins at 1:30 out front of the KX Info Center and the Pedal Pull begins at 2:00 PM. MILK A COW CONTEST Wednesday, July 26-4:00 pm, Expo Barn Fairgoers of all ages can compete to see if they've got what it takes to milk a dairy cow faster than all the other "farm hands". Participants will attempt to fill their bucket with the most milk in 30 seconds by milking our safe, artificial cow. Contest starts at 4 pm in the Expo Barn. Preregistration in encouraged, so sign up here today for a MOOOing good time! HIPPITY HOP BARREL RACE Monday, July 24-3:00 pm, Dakota Talent Stage The speed and agility of barrel racing...on a Hippty Hop? This crazy race will have you bouncing your way to victory on a classic Hippity Hop! Weave in and out of the barrels faster than your opponent and be crowned the victor! The competition is for ages 2 to 6, and split between two age groups. It is sure to be fun for the whole family. The contestant with the fastest time wins the race! Sign up your little speed racer here for this awesome event! ESSAY CONTEST- WHY GRANDPARENTS ARE SO IMPORTANT Thursday, July 27-11:30 am, State Fair Center 4th and 5th graders from around the state are invited to write an essay about "Why Grandparents are so Important." Tell us in 150 words or less why grandparents are so important! First place wins a family trip to Medora, Second place wins a Season Pass to Raging Rivers Waterpark in Mandan, and the third place winner will receive a family day at the Roosevelt Park Zoo in Minot. The winners will be reading their essays at Senior Day Thursday, July 27.
9 National 4-H Leadership Opportunities The NDSU Center for 4-H Youth Development invites you (Ages 15-18) to attend National 4-H Congress and National 4-H Conference. 4-H Congress November 24-28, 2017, Atlanta, GA Purpose: To recognize and promote excellence in the 4-H youth development education program 4-H Conference March 2018 (Date to be determined), Washington, DC Purpose: Involve youth with program development, strengthen and continue development of 4-H public relations programs Application deadline: August 1 Applications due for both programs at ND Center for 4-H Youth Development by August 1, 2017 Expenses: The North Dakota 4-H Foundation provides partial sponsorships. Delegates will be responsible for meals to and from the event location and any souvenirs they wish to purchase.
