12 Long Track SEAN IRELAND Long track program director Born: Nov. 14, 1969, Mississauga, Ont. Hometown: Winnipeg Training centre: The Olympic Oval, Calgary Highlights Sean joined SSC as long track program director in July 2010 He had served as a member of SSC s high performance committee (long track), and continues to be the staff liaison Before joining SSC, he was associate director of sport with the Olympic Oval in Calgary from 2006 to 2010 He contributed to the development of the LTPAD competition review and the resulting Racing on Skates recommendations. Coaching Sean is a certified NCCP Level IV coach As national team coach from 1998 to 2006, he coached two Olympic gold medalists and one silver medalist, and his skaters had 22 world records, 16 World Single Distances Championships podium finishes, six World Sprint champions and 39 World Sprint Championships podium finishes, 187 World Cup medalists He is a six-time recipient of the Petro-Canada coaching award He was the 2005 recipient of the Alberta Sport, Parks and Wildlife Foundation coaching recognition award. Skater Sean participation in speed skating took root in Winnipeg at the age of eight and was a member of the River Heights Speed Skating Club He was on the national team from 1988 to 1995 He represented Canada at the 1989 World Junior Championships in Kiev, winning a silver medal in the 500 He represented Canada at 21 World Cups, earning three silver medals and two bronze He competed in the 500 and 1,000 at the 1992 Albertville and 1994 Lillehammer Olympics He took part in 1991 and 1993 World Sprint Championships He was named SSC s Male Athlete of the Year, long track, for 1991 and Quick facts Sean s brother Mike was a member of the national team for 16 years before retiring in 2010 His interest include biking, golf, windsurfing, skiing, triathlons and scuba diving He completed the 2005 Ironman Canada Sean and his wife Christine have two children, Mitchell and Eric. 9

13 Long Track MICHAEL CROWE National team coach sprint and middle distances Born: Nov. 11, 1953, St. Louis, Miss. Hometown: Butte, Mont. Training centre: The Olympic Oval, Calgary season Michael is entering his sixth season with Canada s national teams He is teamed-up with Bart Schouten to coach 11 national and development teams skaters He will focus on the 500 and 1,000 distances and these athletes: national team members Anastasia Bucsis, Jamie Gregg and Gilmore Junio; and development team skaters Alex Boisvert-Lacroix, William Dutton, Tamara Oudenaarden and Danielle Wotherspoon season Coaching with Bart Schouten, they had skaters win a gold medal, two silver and a bronze at World Cups, and gold at the World Single Distances Championships Outside of stepping on the podium, his skaters had 23 top 10 World Cup finishes and nine at the three world championships They had one skater, Kaylin Irvine, compete in her first World Cup, World Sprint Championships and World Single Distances Championships. Other seasons Michael helped Jamie Gregg, with only three years experience, progress in speed skating and finish eighth in the 500 at the Vancouver 2010 Olympics He coached Jeremy Wotherspoon to a comeback season in and win nine World Cup gold medals and two silver in the 500, a gold and silver at the 2008 World Sprint Championships and two gold at the 2008 World Single Distances Championships. Wotherspoon also won a bronze in the 1,000 at the World Sprint Championships, and a gold, silver and two bronze medals at World Cups He coached at the 1984, 1988, 2002 and 2010 Winter Olympics He was named USA Coach of the Year in 1998 and Skater Michael was a member of the American speed skating team in and competed in the 1974 World Sprint Championships. Quick facts Michael started speed skating at the age of seven His sister Peggy competed in the 1976 Olympic Games and two World Sprint Championships Skating was a family sport for him, and it helped keep his family connected Michael and his wife Mary have two sons, Michael and Matthew. 10

14 Long Track GREGOR JELONEK National coach Born: Sept. 16, 1968, Montreal Hometown: Montreal Training centre: Gaétan-Boucher National Centre, Quebec City season Gregor is entering his 11th season with Canada s national teams He will coach national team skaters Laurent Dubreuil and Muncef Ouardi season Gregor coached Ouardi from an early season injury to a bronze medal in the 500 metres at the World Sprint Championships. Ouardi finished 10th overall. He also competed in two World Cups and the World Single Distances Championships Dubreuil was the 500-metre world champion and won bronze int he 1,000 metres at the World Junior Championships. He competed at his first career World Cup, setting the world junior record in the 500 metres. At Dubreuil s first World Single Distances Championships, he was 11th overall in the 500. Other seasons Gregor coached at the 2006 and 2010 Winter Olympics He coached at the junior worlds from 1997 to 2002, 2007, and 2010 to 2012 He coached at the World All-Round Championships in 1999, 2003 and 2004, and the World Single Distances Championships in 2003, 2006, 2007, 2009 and 2012 He was named SSC s Coach of the Year in 2000 and Skater Gregor was on the national long track team from 1987 to 1992 He competed at the Calgary 1988 Olympics in the 1,500 metres He represented Canada at the 1986 and 1987 World Junior Championships, 1989 World All-Round Championships and seven World Cups. Quick facts Gregor enjoys spending time with his family, reading and movies. 11

15 Long Track TODD McCLEMENTS Development team and Olympic Oval coach Born: Dec.19, 1973, Toronto Hometown: Saskatoon Training centre: The Olympic Oval, Calgary season Todd is entering his first season with Canada s development team He will focus on the following 10 athletes: Kali Christ, Leo Landry, Kyle Parrott, Tori Spence, Brianne Tutt, Justin Warsylewicz, Shannon Rempel, Gabriel Chiasson- Poirier, Dustin Miller and Lauren McGuire season Todd had four skaters from the Olympic Oval program qualify for their first World Cup teams, and two skaters qualify for their first senior World Championships At the World Single Distances Championships, Kali Christ placed ninth, and at the World All-Around Championships Stefan Waples placed 21st overall Todd also had two skaters qualify for the World Cup Final, where Kali Christ placed 15th in the 1,000 and 11th in the 1,500. Other seasons Todd has been coaching with the Olympic Oval Program since 2002 and was an assistant coach with Marcel Lacroix from 2002 to He has also coached national team skaters from Austria, China, the USA, Sweden and North Korea, including helping Anna Rokita of Austria to two top 10 finishes at the Torino 2006 Olympics. Todd has completed his diploma of high performance coaching from the National Coaching Institute Calgary and is a NCCP Level IV coach. Skater Todd skated in the Olympic Oval Program from 1991 to 2002 and had a top finish of second overall at the Canadian All-Around Championships. Quick facts Todd is a third generation speed skater and grew up skating in Saskatoon. 12

16 Long Track BART SCHOUTEN National team coach sprint and middle distances Born: Sept. 12, 1967, Haarlem, Netherlands Hometown: Haarlem, Netherlands Training centre: The Olympic Oval, Calgary season Bart is entering his third season with Canada s national teams He is teamed-up with Mike Crowe to coach 11 national and development teams skaters He will focus on the 500, 1,000 and 1,500 distances, as well team pursuit and these athletes: national team members Cindy Klassen and Denny Morrison, and development team skaters Martin Corbett and Richard MacLennan. He also coaches Sarah Gregg season Coaching with Mike Crowe, they had skaters win a gold medal, two silver and a bronze at World Cups, and gold at the World Single Distances Championships Outside of stepping on the podium, his skaters had 23 top 10 World Cup finishes and nine at the three world championships They had one skater, Kaylin Irvine, compete in her first World Cup, World Sprint Championships and World Single Distances Championships. Other seasons Bart first started coaching in the Netherlands and then moved to the United States in 1996 From 1998 to 2002, he was the US national all-round coach, coaching Derek Parra to a gold and a silver medal at the Salt Lake City 2002 Olympics From 2002 to 2006, he was the high performance manager and coach at the Utah Olympic Oval in Salt Lake City. During that period and under his leadership, German skater Monique Garbrecht was world sprint champion. He also coached Chad Hedrick to gold, silver and bronze medals at the Turin 2006 Olympics He coached the German national men s team from 2006 to 2010 He coached Dutch skater Bob de Jong to a bronze medal at the Vancouver 2010 Olympics He has attended all major championships and Olympics since 1998 He is a certified NCCP Level V coach. Skater Bart competed nationally in the Netherlands and he skated in the Dutch Student National Championships and outdoor marathons on natural ice. Quick facts Bart started skating at the age of 13, but knew at 15 that he wanted to be a coach. He enjoys fly-fishing, cycling and spending time with his family He is fluent in Dutch, English and German and a working knowledge of French. 13

17 Long Track XIULI WANG National coach Born: Oct. 20, 1965, Harbin, China Hometown: Harbin, China Training centre: The Olympic Oval, Calgary season Xiuli is entering her 11th season with Canada s national teams She is teamed-up with Mark Wild to coach 11 national and development teams skaters She will focus on the 1,000, 1,500, 3,000/5,000 distances and team pursuit, and these athletes: national team members Lucas Makowsky, Christine Nesbitt and Brittany Schussler; and development team skaters Kaylin Irvine and Phil Riopel season Coaching with Mark Wild, they had skaters win eight gold medals, two silver and a bronze at World Cups, and six world champions (gold), one silver and bronze at world championships Not counting the medals won, their skaters had 20 top 10 World Cup finishes and 17 at the three world championships. Other seasons Xiuli was named SSC s Female Coach of the Year from 2005 to 2009 She was selected as the 2006 Jack Donohue Coach of the Year She received the Petro-Canada Coaching Excellence Award from 2002 to 2010 The Canadian Association for the Advancement of Women in Sport (CAAWS) named her the 2006 Most Influential Women in Sport and Physical Activity in Canada list She is a certified Level IV coach. Skater Xiuli competed in long track for 17 years She was member of the Chinese national team for nine years (1983 to 1992) She competed at the 1984 World Junior Championships, winning a silver medal in the 1,000 She represented China at the 1987 World Sprint Championships and the 1986, 1987, 1990, 1991 World All-Round Championships, and was world champion in the 1,500 in 1990 She competed at the Sarajevo 1984 Olympics She competed at seven World Cups, winning five bronze medals. Quick facts Xiuli began coaching in 1996 She is the former coordinator for the Calgary Olympic Oval Bronze One-on-One long track program In her leisure time, she enjoys cross-country running, basketball and hiking She speaks English and Mandarin. 14

18 Long Track MARK WILD National team coach long and middle distances Born: Nov. 19, 1974, Rochdale, England Hometown: Milton, Ont. Training centre: The Olympic Oval, Calgary season Mark is entering his third season with Canada s national teams He is teamed-up with Xiuli Wang to coach 11 national and development teams skaters He will focus on the women s 3,000/5,000, men s 5,000/10,000 and team pursuit and these athletes: national team skater Jordan Belchos; and development team members Scott Bickerton, Ivanie Blondin, Alec Janssens and Stefan Waples season Coaching with Xiuli Wang, they had skaters win eight gold medals, two silver and a bronze at World Cups, and six world champions (gold), one silver and bronze at world championships Not counting the medals won, their skaters had 20 top 10 World Cup finishes and 17 at the three world championships. Other seasons From 2004 to 2006, Mark coached short track at the Calgary Olympic Oval before moving on to coaching long track and the Own the Podium crossover recruitment program From 2006 to joining SSC, he has been a long track coach at the Oval, coaching then 20-year old Anastasia Bucsis to qualify for Canada s 2010 Olympic long track team He coached at the 2011 and 2012 at the World Sprint Championships, World All-Round Championships, and World Single Distances Championships He coached at the Vancouver 2010 Olympics He is pursuing his NCI Level IV diploma. Skater Mark was a member of Canada s short track national and development teams from 1999 to 2002, before switching to long track He retired from competitive skating in Quick facts Mark started skating at the age of five as a short track skater in Fort St. John, B.C. He moved to Ontario and skated with the Kitchener-Waterloo Speed Skating Club and then Cambridge club He enjoys fly-fishing, golf and travelling. 15

Training centre: Maurice-Richard Arena, Montreal Highlights Yves joined SSC as short track program director in August 2006 He was the Canadian short track team leader for the Vancouver 2010 Olympics, leading his team to five medals. Coaching Yves started coaching at the age of 31, working first developing young skaters and then moved to elite athletes with the CPV Montreal International He is a certified Level III coach He coached at two World Junior Championships (2004 and 2005), winning two gold medals, two silver and two bronze He also coached at two World Cups In , four of his six skaters qualified for the national junior team He was named Quebec s 2005 Development Coach of the Year at the Lauréats Montréalais Gala, and was nominated for 2002, 2003 and 2004 He was named 2003 Coach of the Year by the Fédération de patinage de vitesse du Québec. She won a silver medal in the 3,000, was fourth in the 1,500, fifth in the 1,000, and eighth in the 500 Gabrielle s final Canadian ranking was also a career-high fourth.
