TRACK & FIELD MEET NOTES GAME 1 ORAL ROBERTS STORY LINES Baylor will have a total of 35 entries in the field at the NCAA West Preliminary Championships. The women will have 20 entries, while the men have 15 with each vying for a top-12 spot that earns a berth to the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore., June 6-9. The 20 women s entries is one short of program record set in 2014 and again in 2017, while the 35 overall selections are second-most in the current NCAA West format, after the 36 that BU had in The Baylor women will have 18 entries in individual events, along with both the 4x100 and 4x400- meter relays. Of those entries, Baylor has seven currently ranked among the top 12 in the West region. On the men s side, Baylor has 13 in individual events and both relays as well. The Bears have six currently ranked among the region s top 12. The Bears have three athletes who are ranked top-three in their event going into the regional meet. On the women s side, Kiana Horton is the Big meter champion after she ran a school-record at the conference meet last weekend for the third-best time heading into the meet. With the nation s third-best time in the 800 meters, Aaliyah Miller broke the Big 12 meet record when she claimed the league title in 2: On the men s side, three-time Big 12 champion Wil London ran the second-best time of in the 400 meters at the Michael Johnson Invitational. All four relays are ranked in the top six heading into the meet: women s 4x100m relay (sixth), women s 4x400m relay (second), men s 4x100m relay (sixth) and men s 4x400m relay (fifth). BU has five athletes competing in two individual events: Taylor Bennett (100, 200 meters), Raven Grant (100, 200 meters), Juanita Mainoo (100, 200 meters), Jalen Seals (long jump, triple jump) and Maxwell Willis (100 meters, 200 meters). In four events, Baylor has at least three entries, including the women s 100 meters (Bennett, Grant, Mainoo, Washington), the 200 meters (Bennett, Mainoo, Grant) and the 800 meters (Miller, De Souza, Stewart) and the men s 400 meters (London, Fields, Dickson). NCAA Preliminary-round competition will serve as the qualifying rounds for the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore on June Twelve competitors from each individual event and 12 teams from each relay event advance from the two preliminary sites, Lexington, Ky. (East) or Austin, Texas (West). At the preliminary sites, competitors in individual events will be pared from 48 to 24 in the first round and then down to 12 in the second round. Of the 17 underclassmen competing, 14 of them are freshmen (7 men, 7 women) and will compete in their first NCAA West Preliminary Championships. The freshmen posted 16 all-conference honors at the Big 12 Outdoor Championship May in Waco, Teas. LAST SEASON AT THE NCAA WEST PRELIMINARIES Nearly doubling 2016 s entries, the Bears qualified 21 athletes in 17 events for the 2017 NCAA Outdoor Championships. It was the second-most for the team since the NCAA changed to the two-region qualifying system in 2010 and eight more entries than 2016 s total. The BU women had 10 entries (8 individual & 2 relays), while the men had a total of seven (5 individual & 2 relays). Baylor has had its men s 4x400-meter squad at the NCAA Championships every year since Baylor was one of just three schools in the west region (Arkansas, Texas A&M) to get all four of its relays through to Eugene. Baylor advanced its men s 4x100-meter relay team to the NCAA Championships for the seventh time in the last eight years. Baylor last advanced all four of its relays to the NCAA Outdoor Championships in BEARS DEPTH ON FULL DISPLAY DURING OUTDOOR SEASON As evidenced by the chart above, Baylor s 2018 success has been built on a wide-array of events. The Bears are projected to advance in 5 events on the men s side, while the women would advance in 7 events. BAYLOR S BIG 12 OUTDOOR RECAP The Baylor track & field team had seven competitors earn Big 12 titles at the Big 12 Outdoor Championship May at the Clyde Hart Track & Field Stadium in Waco. The BU women finished tied for third place and posted the most points when hosting the conference championship with 109 points while the men finished eighth with 63 points. Junior sprinter Kiana Horton earned the female high-point scorer award after she posted 23 points in four events during the championship (200m, 400m, 4x100m relay, 4x400m relay). Kiana Horton ran a school-record 400-meter race in to win the title. Aaliyah Miller ran a Big 12 meet record and top-two 800m time to win the title. He has served in that capacity for the cross country team for the last 17 years. Harbour was named as Clyde Hart s successor June 14, 2005, after he had been Baylor s head cross country coach and assistant track coach since January Last year s Big 12 Coach of the Year, Harbour continues to build Baylor s cross country and track and field teams into one of the nation s most successful and prominent programs. Under his watch, Baylor has posted 23 top-20 finishes nationally since he took over both programs in , including eight top-10 finishes. In track and field, the women have seven top-20 finishes at nationals, while the men have been top times with four women s cross country top-20 finishes. Last season, Harbour and the Bears brought home the program s first ever Big 12 indoor women s track & field title with a school-record points in Ames, Iowa. In cross country, Harbour s women s teams have excelled, earning nine berths into the NCAA Championships, including seven-straight from and two in the last three years (2014, 2016). The streak was the sixth longest-active run at the time. The team success has been built around a multitude of athletes who have succeeded individually. In his 12 full seasons as head coach, Harbour s student-athletes have won 10 individual NCAA titles, earned 200 All-America certificates and claimed 92 Big 12 titles, putting them consistently among the nation s elite.
