Volume 21 Issue 7 December 2000 A beautiful warm and sunny Sunday it was, as 225 Veteran runners gathered for the penultimate (sorry I like that word) monthly handicap of the year So it was a good number who took advantage of the good weather to take in the fresh air and for some to engage in fierce competition. There were many new people but also some well known visitors from the past : Barbara Tucker who had come from New Zealand and Gwen Vines from Queensland. Good to see them again. The course around Lake Ginninderra was as flat as old beer and a welcome respite from the Himalayan heights of Mt Taylor Above: Vets get together for a chat and a cuppa after the handicap run LAKE GINNINDERRA HANDICAP - THE PENULTIMATE for those who prefer the pleasures of terra firma flata. The Waddell Walking Series : Walkers were slightly less numerous than last month (22 against 25) but still managed to create some drama as David Hall who came in first and received the gold medal was finally found to have started from the wrong group and disqualified. So in fact Nigel Crew will get the gold while Trish Thomas is upgraded to silver and Audun Fristad, M75, unexpectedly receives the bronze. It seems that David is customary to wrong starts so maybe someone should accompany him next time... Nigel is a long time member of Vets as he joined right from the beginning. He did not remain a member all the time but rejoined later on. He started running then because of his asthma and found that the running, and later the racewalking which became his favourite, enabled him to control his breathing and now he can do away with medication and sprays. People with asthma used to be advised against sport but now it has become well known that sport on the contrary can be a great help. Nigel can tell you about it. Since the introduction of the Waddell series Nigel has been taking part in the handicaps, which shows that it was a great idea (thank you Peter). Why didn't anyone think of it before? For Trish it is her first medal in the walk and a good reward for her efforts in (Continued on page 3)

Page 2 Hello once again. Some newer members and some of the older members of the Club may not be aware of the procedures to be followed in the event of a track and field record being set by a member of the Club. If an ACT VAC record is broken at a regular Thursday meet or Club Championship, Quentin Anthony, will usually note it and do the necessary processing. If you believe there is an error or omission, please contact Quentin at the track or phone or fax Records are displayed on a board in the grandstand at the track on Thursdays. If you believe you have broken an Australian record, please ensure the event judge or chief timekeeper and one other official sign and date the result sheet. In a throwing event, ensure that the event judge arranges for the implement to be weighed and certified. The Meet Director should arrange for the completed result sheet to be passed to a committee member or the statistician. PRESIDENT S MESSAGE For a hand timed track event a minimum of two and preferably three timekeepers are required. In longer track events where the running watch is used, the time is acceptable for an Australian record. World records, where the criteria are much more stringent, the Meet Director and/or statistician will obtain the necessary documentation. ACT records may be set by a current (i.e. Financial) ACTVAC member anywhere in the world in any legitimate competition. Our statistician requires some written record of the performance, eg result sheet or book, or a press article. It was sad that a night at Woden was missed due to rain, now that we are at Bruce hopefully this will not happen again, it has to be pretty bad to miss out there. The return to Bruce saw our second lot Vetrunner of relay runs, these are a lot of fun. We had 32 runners that equals 8 lanes. Kev Matthews does a great job in selecting the teams, but he can be helped a lot more if people can give a fairly accurate time for the distance. Colin apologises for missing the spiral run the first he s missed in 12 years, he was with his parents celebrating their 60 th wedding anniversary in Melbourne. The spiral will be held in December. As of Monday 13 November the Club has a membership of 500. The average annual retention rate is at 81.7%. So far this year it is 79.4%. Our 10 year average annual growth is 2.7%. Percentage of women in the Club currently stands at The highest numbers in both men and women is in the 50 years age group. She says her surgeon is happy with her progress. Her rehabilitation was to take 9 months and she is now half way there. Of course Trish who has been in well over 100 handicap runs has had many medals over the years. So many that she does not count them and could not tell me how many. The fastest male walker was John Stenhouse as usual, in 17:35, and the fastest woman was, also as usual, Monika Short, in 21:57. Now it is interesting to look at the pointscore as there is only one more event to go. Andrina Norden was leading last month but has now been overtaken by Dave Mackenzie. Dave's lead is tiny though, a mere 2 points : 247 against 245 for Andrina. So he'll really have to fight for it. John Stenhouse is third and not very far back with 234 points. The suspense will remain till the end. Good luck to all. The Frylink Running Series : There were 54 participants in this race of 3.3 km. The first eligible runner and recipient of the gold was Keith Johnson, M55, in 16:21. Keith has had heart surgery only last March and is already fit enough to win a race. Congratulations. Keith has been running with the Vets for 16 years, has over 100 handicap runs under his belt, and had won medals before but never gold. He usually runs the long course and hopes to get back to that next January. It is good to see him in such good shape. Second, just behind Elaine Cooper who was not eligible, came Tanya Daley, in 20:43. Tanya was just ecstatic about her silver medal and managed to tell me between 2 giggles that she had just started running handicaps last year, here at Lake Ginninderra. This was only her 9th handicap and already a huge PB of 2 minutes for her. Some people wait for years to win a medal... Husband Ian was jealous because the medal he won at another handicap was only bronze. Terrible to get beaten by your own wife! He'll have to go for gold now. Third for the medals was Jillian Clark, W55, in 17:13. Jillian has been running since 1994, brought to the Vets by Bryan Thomas with whom she was working at the time. She enjoys her running a lot and has never looked back since. She has run around 60 handicaps, won 3 gold, 1 silver and 1 bronze. She was also second in the yearly pointscore in 94 and 98. Great "career". At the moment she runs a bit less as she has been busy studying, but still wins medals! She particularly likes flat short courses, so Ginninderra was the right thing for her. The fasties were Elaine Cooper, W40, for the women and overall, in a great time of 11:37, and Hugh Ford, M40, for the men in 12:45. Now for the pointscore we have a very tight race again with only 8 points between the first three : Carol Baird has now overtaken Karen Daniels and leads with 513 points. Karen is second with 508 and Keith Perroux third with 505. Keith leapt from 9th place to relegate Cathy Montalto into fourth. But Cathy is still very close with 499. So the last run will be the decider. Please take your bets. This is very exciting indeed. The Thomas Running Series : As usual this handicap was the most popular with 149 participants, 20 more than last month. The runners had to go all around the lake, a distance of 7.6 km. The happy winner was gorgeous George Kubitzky (he used to be the captain of the internationally famous running team "George's gorgeous gals" composed of yours truly - that's why I mention it - of your wonderful editor Cathy Montalto and of Marlene Reid, coach of high renown). George ran in a good time of 32:43, considering that he's just recovering from a hamstring injury (some people do recover, I hear). The silver medal went to Michael Freer, wonder M70, who ran in 35:18. Michael likes flat courses. He has run about 120 handicaps, winning the silver 15 years ago, the bronze 10 years ago on this same course. 4 Page 4 D Day Dear fellow vets The Sydney Olympics was gigantic, and reminded me of D Day in 1944 when a million men were landed on the coast of France. All credit to the professionals, because the amateurs could not have managed it, and Greece will now be hard pressed. Thankfully there are still amateurs as evidenced by the 50,000 volunteers who at their own expense served so well was recognized around the World. Nevertheless something must be done to reduce size and thereby reduce the corruption. Princess Anne and I.O.C. member is on record as saying, There should be no team sports, and Greece should be the permanent home of the Olympics. The original concept was a Games of Goodwill and Peace, there should be no National flag waving or medal counting. It was to be man against man (women were not considered) to participate was the important thing not the winning. Well of course we have come a long way since then and it is right that we add such sports as the Triathlon, but now is the time to get back closer to the original dream and to exclude all BALL GAMES. Of course he who pays the piper will call the tune, and therefore World wide television will decide! Money it seems is the root of all evil. All in the stride After the nerve racking business of rehearsing and lighting the Cauldron, I thought Cathy Freeman s gold to be magnificent, however what intrigued me was the fact that her stride was longer than Michael Johnsons. This is competely against the laws of physiology and clearly Johnson is an odd looking runner. He makes up for a short stride by an increase in frequency and in the 200m the fastest man in the world. Yet he lacks the strength to beat Green out of the blocks in the 100m. I also noted that one of the front runners in that great men s 10,000m was only 18 years old, Gebreselasi the winner did not take the lead until 5m from the tape, all the pacemakers lost and of course due to tactics and slow runners early in most of the races, there were no world records. I did notice that in the mens 800m final that while the leaders went by in 49 seconds, at the rear by several metres was a young LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Russian, who probably ran 53 seconds and yet he finished in 1:44, an even paced run. The lesson to be learned is that if you are not fast enough over 200m you won t win and that pace makers always lose. I did admire that GB girl who led for 23 laps in the 10km. Jack Pennington 24 Alberga Street Kaleen ACT 2617 Too Many Forest Handicaps Dear fellow vets Recent changes have seen our Lake Ginnindera run put back to October instead of its traditional end-of-season slot in November. Next year it is to be put further back to June and ominously, coupled with something called O Connor Ridge presumably yet another forest run! Before any further changes are made, could we see a reply to Keith Perroux s defence of Lake Ginnindera as our November run? Anyway, why all these forest runs? I do not recall ever seeing any justification or explanation for the abandonment of two of our most popular runs such as Hospital Jetty and Fadden Pines wonderful venues with ample parking and toilets, and safe, fast courses. A complete contrast to Rani Road (aptly known as Rocky Horror!) and Duffy Forest. Forest runs are undoubtedly wonderful training venues but many are unsuitable for racing involving large numbers of runners with vastly differing abilities and capabilities. Forest tracks are also vulnerable to possible cost-recovery, cancellation because of bush fires or rainfall and some, such as Duffy Forest ad Rani Road, have dangerous hazards such as tree roots and loose rocks. I wonder if the organisers are fully cognisant with the club s legal duty of care to its members? Could be an expensive oversight! Additionally, Duffy Forest has a major problem with parking. The comings and goings of over a hundred vehicles early on a Sunday morning must have been a most unpleasant invasion of their domestic Vetrunner amenity to the nearby residents. Surely not good for our public relations, and didn t we have that problem at Long Gully? There is an obvious but unspoken trend to dicing bike paths for forest runs and not pleasant or easy runs at that. Why? Bike paths are fast and safe and are OK in moderation and many vets race regularly on them eg the Wednesday BBQ handicaps, fun runs, our half marathons and so on. They also offer the chance of ample parking, toilets and some, as an added bonus, have kiddies playgrounds. Let s abandon Duffy Forest and Rani Road and return to Fadden Pines and Hospital Jetty. The latter could be varied to a Black Mountain Peninsula site, offering marvelous facilities and a most scenic venue. Another possiblity, also with parking and toilets, would be the eastern side of Scrivener Dam. I believe that the selection of our handicap runs has become too important to be decided by a very few so I propose that, in future, a draft program be submitted for discussion and approval by the mass membership at annual general meetings. In the interim, the 2001 program should be amended to restore Lake Ginnindera to its November slot, and Fadden Pines and Hospital Jetty/Black Mtn Peninsula be substituted for Duffy Forest and Rani Road. Yours in running and fellowship Merv Collins (1103) 10 km/hr speed limit sign Dear fellow vets It could only be in Canberra that some sedentary, desk-bound bureaucrat could decide to stifle the activities of people who take pleasure in lunchtime fitness by placing a 10 km/hr speed limit sign on the shared bike/footpath in Commonwealth Park near the lake for "all users". Apart from every bike rider, almost all joggers and even slower race walkers like myself will now be breaking the law.in fact, it makes me want to go faster in the hope of being booked. Do we now have to watch out for white Tarago s parked amongst the trees? What we need is the positioning of "Please Keep Left" signs on the paths, but this is probably not part of the ideology of the present Liberal government. Craig Freeman #3799 (Continued on page 8)

Vetrunner Page 5 Michael. Let's hope that he won't have to wait another 5 years for the next one. And the bronze medal was awarded to Maria White who came in just behind Michael, in 39:46. Maria has 10 years of handicaps behind her and this was her fifth medal. Pam Weiss, her running partner, seemed to be quite baffled by this performance and told me a few things which I unfortunately was not allowed to print. So you'll have to use your imagination. They're still good friends though. The fastest runners in this series were Steve Bradford in 26:38 for the men, and Rosemary Longstaff in 32:53 for the women. As regards the pointscore, same story as before : very very close race. Only 2 points between first (Steve Bradford 959) and second (Steve Appleby 957), then 2 contenders both with 946 points : Mary Ann Busteed and Ian Bowden. Chris Pauling who was in second place fell back to sixth after missing this race. Steve Appleby came up to second. Mary Ann overtook Bill Leyden who dropped into seventh place and Ian came up from a far away 17th place. Which shows that anything can happen when it is that close. Watch out next month! The two Steves have to be challenged. After the presentations, 3 handicap T- shirts were presented : Mick Corlis and Val Bland were rewarded for 50 handicaps and Dan Reddy joined the select club of participants in 150 handicaps. Well done! Talking about T-shirts, Colin Bridg e, our honourable vice-president was asking for volunteers to be T-shirt manager and roster manager. I just heard to-day that he found them : Tanya Daley volunteered to manage the garments (I suppose you have to keep track of who has 50, 100 or 150 handicaps. 200 will be coming soon with Shampoo George Hanzar in the lead. This job is getting more difficult every year...). Will Foster volunteered to do the roster and put all idle people to work. Thank you very much to both of you. That's how the Vets manage to be a great club : because individuals answer the call when needed. By the way if you want to be involved in the running of the club, do not wait to be asked. Help is needed all the time and there can never be too many hands (don't believe the saying about the broth, it was Above: Left Keith Johnson, Tanya Daley & Jillian Clark Above: Left Michael Freer, George Kubitzky & Maria White invented by the lazy ones looking for an excuse). Later on Bryan Thomas announced the Veterans World Championships in Brisbane next year : he would like to attract 150 Vets to go out there and compete, so think about it and put your entries in soon. This is an event not to be missed and Brisbane is much closer than Gateshead, isn't it? So this was another very well run handicap. For a few days I thought the volunteers were now so well trained that they didn't need direction any more because I could not find any organizer. Alice Scott was the official organizer but she was not there and nobody knew who was replacing her. So I thought her ghost must have been on duty until Colin spoilt my illusions by telling me that Rob and Kay Thorpe had taken over, sort of incognito, because everything happened at the last minute, Alice suddenly having to leave for New Zealand. Considering the short notice of one week and the problems they had on the day, finding they had the wrong keys for the gate and could not get into the area, then had to set up in a hurry, they did a really good job. But Rob said that he still wanted to apologize to the participants because he felt that the introductions to the course were not as good as he would have wished, because of the rush. Actually another problem we talked about

Page 6 Vetrunner Receiving their 50 T-shirt from left: Val Bland and Mick Corlis with David Hall Above: Nigel Crew winner of Waddell Series was the possible confusion between the three events and the fact that more people might get disqualified for going into the wrong race at the wrong time. It seems that it would be clearer if the 3 races started and finished at different places, even if it was only a few metres away and if the Waddell series also had a sign saying walkers. Above: Trish Thomas wins Silver in the Waddell Series It would also help newcomers if the races, especially at the start, were not called Thomas Frylink and Waddell (sorry guys!) but Long Course short course and walk as the above names are not clear for newcomers. Above: Left Dan Reddy joined the 150 T- shirt club with Bill Leyden Maybe a volunteer wearing a visible jacket should walk around giving information as the people doing the registration are often too busy to also explain the system. 7 Vetrunner Page 7 PART FIVE: THE ABC OF VETERAN S ATHLETICS This is the Fifth part of a new series by Bryan Thomas on the ABC of Veterans Athletics in the ACT E ditors of Vetrunner: Ken Daniels, assisted by Peter Frylink wrote and produced our early news-sheet from its beginning in August 1979 to 1981 when they handed it over to Terry Munro. Although the four-page newsletter was meant to be published regularly, now and again there would be a couple of months between editions. In 1982 Bryan Thomas joined with Terry as co-editor only to take over as sole editor the following year. Bryan continued as editor (with a lot of assistance from a small group of typists who typed all the stencils) through to May Bronwyn Gardiner, who had been the main typist for the past two years, now became co-editor with Peter Frylink (June 1986 to May 1987) and then as editor and producer from June 1987 until April A special cover featuring a cartoon sketch of Bronwyn was secretly added to her 100 th edition (October 1994). After Bronwyn s long reign, Jim O Donnell accepted the challenge and so became editor in May Jim set out to make our monthly magazine an even more professional publication by making more use of computer technology and including photographs. The only time Jim has enjoyed a break from this time consuming task was in October and November 2000 when he and his wife holidayed abroad. Encouragement Award: This is one of our most prestigious club-person type awards, (the others being the Clohessy and Johnson Trophies for service and participation in the monthly throwing handicaps and T&F respectively). This annual award is presented at the end of the monthly running handicap year. It recognizes and honours a member who has contributed to the success of the running handicap program and at the same time benefited because of his or her own participation. Duane Lowry was the inaugural recipient in Since then it has been won by in 1981 by Lucille Warth, 1982 Greg O Neill, 1983 Rosemary Parker, 1984 Bronwyn Gardiner, 1985 John Kemp, 1986 John Scown, 1987 Maureen O Shea, 1988 Doug Fry, 1989 Mike Adler, 1990 Andrina Norden, 1991 Colin Bridge, 1992 Laurie Robinson, 1993 Alice Scott, 1994 Robert and Gayle Eaves, 1995 Bill Leydon, 1996 Steve Appelby, 1997 Mick Corlis, 1998 Jim White, 1999 Terry Levings, 2000? Endurance: Endurance is the component of fitness that permits muscles to work for extended periods. It is probably the component that most readily responds to training and appears to be the most beneficial type of fitness for most individuals, especially for persons of our age group. This may well be why long distance running is by far the most popular aspect of our sport. Research suggests that we lose about 5% of maximum endurance potential per year after the age of 40. Equality: Men and women have always been treated equally within all aspects of veteran athletics and every event or opportunity offered to our male members is also available to women members. Veterans Athletics introduced the Hammer Throw, Pole Vault, Triple Jump and Steeplechase for women long before mainstream athletics. ERICKSON, Jan: A very talented W30 and W35 all-round T&F athlete in the early nineties. Jan was a very good sprinter, jumper and thrower making her a natural for the Pentathlon. She was one of the very first (and few) local wo men to attempt the pole vault, an event she had all the necessary coordination, speed and strength to be successful. Jan was awarded the Fristad Trophy for athletics excellence in 1992 and was runner up the following season. She has since moved to Queensland. ERNIE : Ernest Warner is a long distance running enthusiast some might say fanatic for he never seems capable of standing still. Ernie has been running marathons for a long time and would have run more marathons than any other ACT Vet. He is currently ranked 8 th, 2 nd and 1 st ( ) on our M55, M60 and M65 marathon lists. For many years Ernie organised his holidays around both the Gold Coast and the Honolulu Marathons. He has also run many ultram a r a t h o n s (including two 100km runs) and half marathons, winning his age group four times in the annual Vets Half Marathon. Ernie was always a difficult pupil for his one-time coach Geoff Moore; for example he was so pleased with his progress under Geoff s guidance that he decided he c o u l d improve even Above: Ernie Celebrating Above: Ernie s Thank You cake to the Cotter Group more by doing a long hard run before each of the planned sessions. Eugene, Oregon USA: The 8 th World Veterans Athletics Championships were held in this delightful T&F capital of the USA in July Twenty eight Canberra vets and friends attended either as participants or spectators. World Championship medals were won by Bob Chapman (M50 road walk team gold), Garry Hand (M40 cross-country silver and team silver, marathon silver and team gold), Terry Munro (M50 cross-country team silver), Andrina Norden (W35 hammer silver), Bev Scown (W50 crosscountry team bronze), Bryan Thomas (M45 marathon team silver), Trish Thomas (W40 hammer gold) and Gwen Vines (W35 road walk team silver). The T&F component of the1998 World Masters Games was also held in Eugene. Gordon Nightingale, Ken Daniels and Lesley Hamilton competed successfully, returning with a bag of medals.

Page 8 Vetrunner Executive Committee: Our constitution defines the Committee as being made up of a president, vice president, secretary, treasurer and six other members. Since 1979 there have been 66 persons elected to Committee. Many of these people served for longer than a term and some have been committee members for many years. The following have served on the Executive Committee for five or more years Bryan Thomas for 17 years, Ken Daniels for 16, Bronwyn Gardiner 10, Geoff Moore and Trish Thomas 9, Will Foster and Peter Frylink 8; Terry Munro, Jim O Donnell, Rosemary Parker, Stuart Reid and Alan Williams 6; Mike Adler, Maggie Johnson, Alice Scott and Mary Wahren all for 5 years. Exercises: Most of us like to run, jump, throw or walk but are not so enthusiastic about doing any other sort of exercise, especially if it involves stretching. We all know that these complementary exercises are beneficial and that we should do them but many of us wait until we suffer a muscle injury before doing what should have always been a regular part of our fitness program. Explosive Power: That sudden burst of energy that propels a sprinter from the starting blocks or sends the javelin soaring or a high jumper up over great heights. It is a valuable attribute of many elite athletes, especially those who do well in events requiring a great effort over a short time period. Very good throwers exhibit a high degree of explosive energy and often surprise casual onlookers as to how competitive they are in the first part of a sprint race. Peter Schiworski, Charlie Rann, Ewen Drummond and Bob Banens are all big men who can show a surprising turn of speed over a short distance. EYNON, Ken: A talented long distance runner and administrator. Ken has enjoyed some excellent performances in marathons, half marathons and 10,000m and 5,000m track races. Perhaps his best marathon performance was a 2.37 in the 1986 Adelaide Festival Marathon as an M40 and his most memorable the 1999 London Marathon. Above: Ken Eynon running the London Marathon He has completed 16 of the 19 Vets Half Marathons, has been Race Director of all 15 Weston Creek Half Marathons and was Race Director for the 1997 Australian Masters Games Half Marathon. 9 Vetrunner Page 9 TRACK AND FIELD REPORTS 19 OCTOBER 2000 Keen Athletes Brave Damp Conditions Very damp and cool conditions greeted athletes for the season s second night of T&F at Woden Athletic Field on 19 October. Heavy rain during the previous 24 hours ensured slow and heavy conditions however in true ACT Vets spirit a reasonable crowd attended the meet. All scheduled events were conducted with the exception of the High Jump where it was decided that the runup areas were too slippery. In the first event of the evening, the 800m, (M65) Peter Trotter and (M55) Graeme Small staged a great battle at the front of the pack and could not be separated at the finish line with both recording times of 3:10.9. (W50) Jill Brown was next home in 3:15.3, the best time for the ladies. In the faster heat, (M30) Mick Konemann ran strongly from the front and recorded an impressive 2:18.5 in the difficult conditions. (M40) Frank Kresse again showed good early season form and took second place in 2:20.1 followed by (M40) Rod Lynch in 2:27.3. Meanwhile, the Discus throwers had been busily sweeping several inches of water from the circle before they were able to even commence their event. Competition was finally underway with 16 keen throwers participating - the stand out throws being (M55) Ray Green with metres, (M50) Alex Turbin 37.07, and (W35) Jane Hardy A small contingent of sprinters faced the starter s gun in the 100m with the five heat winners being (W30) Christina Johnson in 15.9 seconds, (M45) Peter Reed 15.5, (M35) Mark Barrow 14.2, (M50) Grahame Taylor 13.8 and (M35) Michael Roden running a splendid 11.5 to edge out his rival (M30) Ken Telfer 11.8, in the fast heat. (W50) Margaret Taylor was the quickest of the ladies in Only five Walkers braved the elements for the 1500m event and promising ACT U16 Junior Ashley Colquhoun led throughout in the heavy conditions and recorded an easy victory in 8:21.8 from (W35) Carolyne Kramar 10:42.9 and (W60) Chris Mahe 11:30.5. In the 400m event, four heats were run and the winners were (W30) Christina Johnson in 81.1 seconds, (M50) Jim White 75.9, (M30) Ken Telfer 59.8 and (M35) Michael Roden The small but appreciative crowd was disappointed when Ken decided to run in an early heat and therefore the battle with Michael didn t eventuate. Nevertheless, Michael produced a sensational run in wet and heavy conditions and this augurs well for some exciting 400m events when T&F returns to the AIS on 9 November. (W45) Maureen Rossiter was quickest of the ladies in Conditions were also difficult for the second throwing event of the evening, the Heavy Weight. (M50) Alex Turbin with metres, and (M55) Ray Green 13.14, led the men with (W35) Jayne Hardy s the best of the ladies. In the final event of the night 25 runners battled fading light and a tough seven and a half laps on the wet grass in the 3000m. (M45) Michael Leahey was a very convincing winner in 10.33, almo st 50 seconds ahead of (M40) Frank Kresse in (M40) Rod Lynch was next in and (W50) Jill Brown led home a small group of ladies in Many thanks to Meet Director, Nev Madden, and the rostered officials, George Kubitzky, Ian Daley, Col Burns, Alister Davey and Robin Whyte for organising a well run meet in fairly average conditions. 26 OCTOBER 2000 DANIELS & ADLER SERIES EVENTS ATTRACT GOOD NUMBERS The first of the popular Track & Field Above: Jill Brown leading down the home straight with Deslie Kubitzky just behind handicap events helped in attracting good numbers to Woden on 26 October The third night of the season saw the first of both the Daniels Handicap Series (100m) and the Adler Spiral Handicaps (5 laps). Excellent weather and track conditions were reflected in good participation numbers in most events, especially the 5 Lap Spiral (59 participants), 1500m (36), 100m Handicap (27), Javelin (22) and Shot (20). In the first of three heats of the 1500m, (M55) Geoff Hakes won a tightly contested finish in 6:18.2 from (W50) Carol Baird in 6:19.7 and (M50) Michael Gardner in 6:21.8. In the second heat (M50) Neil Boden left the pack behind early and recorded a comfortable win in 5:23.4 from (M60) Tony Booth and (M35) Brian McLachlan in 5:43.5. In the quick heat (M35) Mick Konemann again looked in ominous form running very strongly from the front to record a superb time 4:35.2 on the grass to win comfortably from (M45) Michael Leahey in 4:48.8 and (M45) Steve Bradford in 4:51.2. Carol s effort in the second heat was the best performance among the ladies. The Javelin was contested in two groups and the longest throws of the evening were recorded by (M50) Bob Banens

Page 10 with metres, (W35) Jane Hardy 36.45, (M55) Ray Green and (M60) Ken Daniels It was pleasing to see two of our newest participants, Peter Reed and Ralph Scrivens, both (M45), really enjoying their first throwing competition and being offered plenty of coaching and encouragement by the old hands. Meanwhile, the sprinters were looking to get some early points on the board with the first of this season s eight handicap races in the popular Daniels Sprint Handicap Series. Six heats of the 100m were conducted and even at this early stage of the season there were several very exciting finishes making life rather difficult for officials at the finish line. (M45) Nick Blackaby, with a net performance of 9.73 seconds, took the maximum 30 points followed by (M40) Nigel Coldrick in 10.68, (M45) Nev Madden and (W40) Deirdre Russack The 2000m Walk proved to be a real battle between experience and youth and in an absorbing race (M40) Lachlan Wilkinson took the honours in a time of 11:00.8 just ahead of (U16) Ashley Colquhoun in 11:03.9 and closely followed by the evergreen (M55) Robin Whyte in 11:05.9. Of the ladies, (W40) Helen Bialecki recorded a time of 12:21.2 and (W45) Barbara Tucker, on a short visit from NZ, 13:19.6. In the Shot Put, (M50) Alex Turbin recorded the longest throw of the night with metres closely followed by (M55) Ray Green s As usual (W35) Jayne Hardy was not far away with and (W60) Jen Bourke showed good early season form with a throw of The fact that the mowing contractors had forgotten to cut the long grass in the runup did not deter the 12 competitors in the Long Jump event. (M35) Mick Konemann s 4.85 metres was the outstanding leap of the night followed by (M30) David Simpson 4.26 and (M35) Dave Alden with (W45) Marlene Reid was the best of the ladies with In the second sprint event of the night, the 200m, (W45) Bev Breen won the first heat in 35.5, (M45) Nev Madden the second in 28.3, (M40) Mick Horan the third in 28.6 and in the quick heat (M45) Bob Barbaro ran an excellent 24.9 on the grass. (W45) Marlene Reid s effort of 30.0 was the quickest of the ladies. The final event of the night was the first of the popular Adler Spiral Handicap Series run over 5 laps (or a little over 2km). In the slower Division 2 race the evergreen (M70) Rad Leovic was first across the line in but unfortunately was ineligible for points. That honour went to (W45) Charmaine Knobel who ran to collect the maximum 40 points followed by (W40) Deirdre Russack in and (M35) David Alden with (M55) Graeme Small with 8.33 recorded the fastest net time. Vetrunner In the Division 1 event, a fitter and more determined (M45) George Kubitzky secured the maximum 40 points in a net time of 8.27, followed by (M45) Nev Madden in 8.03 and (M60) Bob Chapman with (M45) Steve Bradford continued his Above: Nigel Coldrick and Deirdre Russack impressive early season form recording the fastest net time of Many thanks to Meet Director Garry Maher and rostered officials Tanya Daley, Jill Brown, Richard Scutter, Maureen Rossiter and Carol Baird. 2 NOVEMBER 2000 DOWNPOUR CAUSES T&F TO BE ABANDONED Following three days of constant rain and storms the Competition Sub-Committee abandoned the meeting on Thursday 2 November at Woden. With the knowledge that ACT Vets hate to cancel any event, this decision was made reluctantly, however, with the grass track wet and slippery in some areas, and conditions potentially dangerous, the correct decision was made. 11 Vetrunner Page th MONTHLY THROWING HANDICAP (28 October 2000) Winners Discus Handicap: Left Sharon Gibbons, Jayne Hardy, Peter Neill With all the excitement of watching the Olympics and Paralympics over the last month it was good to get back into our own athletics competition. Three of us, Peter Freeman, Bryan and Trish Thomas were also fortunate to have had the opportunity to work at the Games as volunteers; an experience we shall never forget. We have been fortunate that Jayne Hardy has for a long time been prepared to use her own vehicle to deliver all the heavy throwing equipment to where ever it was needed. But now thanks to the club purchasing a specially fitted out trailer Jayne doesn t have to have the shots, javelins, discus, heavy weights, markers, tapes, tarpaulins, tables, chairs, hammers and other necessary gear sliding around in the back of her van. Instead it is now neatly stacked and arranged in our new club trailer. Thanks to the Executive Committee for recognising the need for such a trailer and budgeting for its purchase. It was good to see Peter O Brien back in action after missing many monthly handicaps this year because of work commitments. Peter celebrated his return to competition by heaving the heavy weight out to 10.34m a new ACT M30 record. Wife Kathe has been more fortunate and has been able to participate on several occasions over the year. Both Kathe and Peter enjoy their involvement in veterans athletics and would dearly love to one day participate in a World Championships. However, next year s event in Brisbane creates a quandary for them as although they will be W35 and M35, only Kathe will be elig ible to participate as men must be at least M40. On the other hand we missed five of our regulars. Kevin Blewitt, Nola de Chazal and Val Chesterton were up in Alice Springs winning medals in the popular Honda Masters Games, Jim O Donnell (Vetrunner editor and photographer) was still abroad and we missed the friendly visit and support of club patron Jack Pennington. Twenty nine vets participated in this month s handicap competition in shot put and discus. The heavy weight throw was an optional extra at the end of a pleasant but overcast spring afternoon. Two new ACT records were set in the heavy weight throw; Peter O Brien in the M30 and Sharon Gibbons threw 11.65m for a new W40 record. The big throws in the shot put were by Alastair Davey 12.27m, Ray Green 11.64, Bob Banens 11.47, Jayne Hardy 10.41, Grahame Taylor 9.15, Atilla Spaits 9.08, Sharon Gibbons 8.92 and Peter Neill 8.89m. Mary Wahren, Audun Fristad and Kathe O Brien all had season best performances. Above: Bob Barnes 50th T-Shirt The winners of the handicapped shot put section were Bryan Thomas from Peter Freeman and Audun Fristad. There was a great battle in the discus between Ray, Bob, Jayne, Atilla and Alistair when they threw 39.42m, 39.26, 37.69, and 34.78m respectively. Others to perform well with the discus were Sharon 31.06m, Grahame Taylor 28.58, Peter Neill 27.87, Peter O Brien 27.04, Jen Bourke and Raylea Rudov 22.09m. Jayne, Sharon, Grahame, Kathe, Jean Heath and Wendy Freeman all had season PB s in the discus competition. The winners of the handicapped discus throw section were Sharon Gibbons from Jayne Hardy and Peter Neill. When the combined distances of both throws were added to each participant s handicap distance the perpetual trophy and the gold medal went to Jayne, the silver to Sharon and the bronze to Peter Neill. This was an unusual circumstance as the first six places in the discus competition finished in the top six of the overall results. The only difference in the two result columns was that Jayne was second in the discus but first overall and Sharon Gibbons had the opposite combination. This was Bob Banens fiftieth monthly throwing handicap, making him

Page 12 the eighteenth member to have earned the special commemorative T shirt. After the completion of nine handicaps this year with one to go, the top eight monthly performances for each participant count towards the annual point score. The current leader in the point score is now Jean Heath with a total of 352 points only six ahead of Audun Fristad on 346 and another six to Narelle Blackaby with 340. Others in the top ten positions are Nola de Chazel 338.5, Jayne Hardy 338, Wendy Freeman 335, Peter Freeman 326, Bryan Thomas 323, Jen Bourke 323 and Margaret Taylor 321 points. Jean will have the honour of wearing the lime green leader s bib for the final handicap of the year. The 105 th Lucky Draw for the fine bottle of port, kindly donated by Joe of Wanniassa IGA Supermarket was appropriately won by Bob Banens on the occasion of his fiftieth competition. Next month s handicap, the final for the year will be on the evening of Wednesday November 22 starting at 6pm. Following the competition in javelin and hamme r we will move over to the Police Citizen s Club for a BYO supper and drinks and presentation of annual trophies. Awards to be presented during the evening are the Annual Point Score Trophy, medals for the best performers (as determined by WAVA Age Standards) over the year in each age group and the prestigious club-person type of award, the Clohessy Trophy. The 2001 competition will begin in February. Next year s competition dates will be published in a future Vetrunner. All throwing handicaps (exc ept the November event) are held at the Masson Street Throwing Field on Saturday afternoons commencing at 1pm. The cost is only $3 which includes afternoon tea or coffee and birthday cake. Because all participants receive a handicap distance to add to the distance they throw, everyone has a chance of being a medallist. The regulars are a very friendly and supportive bunch and newcomers are always made to feel most welcome. If you run off your wrong group, regardless as to whether it was accidental, then you are not eligible to score points. The reason is that your competition should always know where you are in the event, and if you are not in the group they thought you were, then this would upset their tactical plans to catch/stay in front etc. Note: Group allocation. The system is always trying to move you to the bottom 50%. Those who want an easier group are doing themselves a disservice by asking to go off early. Finishing in the top half will always see the system move you to a group where you will finish in the bottom half next event

Page 22 The older I get the faster I used to be, the higher I used to jump, the further I used to throw and leap. BRYAN THOMAS continues his column on what you really did in the past. 20 YEARS AGO (November 1980). This was the height of the fun run era and many members were traveling far and wide to participate. The inaugural Cooma Fun Run was a tough 11km of hills on road and bush track. Keith Hodgson won the M40, Mike Adler M50, Lucille Warth W50 and Joe Mayer M60. Wendy Davidson was W35 champion in the Temora Fun Run while Tom Murray was the oldest finisher in the Goulburn Rocky Hill Fun Run. The final handicap of the year saw 19 runners complete the 7.2km loop of Lake Ginninderra. Christine Best was the winner, just ahead of Jack Tonkin and Roy Yeeles. Keith Hodgson was the quickest. Over the year 31 members had participated in at least one of the monthly handicaps. Keith Hogson was the winner of the 1980 Point Score. This was also the venue for presenting another new trophy, the Encouragement Award. The inaugural recipient was Duane Lowry. 10 YEARS AGO (November 1990). The final throwing handicap of the year was held on a Wednesday evening. 17 participated in the discus won by Trish Thomas from Jen Bourke and Peter Schiworski. The inaugural Annual Point Score was won by Judy Dann from Andrina Norden. Jen Bourke and Ken Daniels tied for third. A record field of 142 ran the 7.6km Lake Ginninderra handicap, the final of the year and venue for presenting all trophies associated with the Monthly Running Handicap program. Carol Robinson won from THE WAY WE WERE Neil McLeod and Alan Norden. Tony Murray and Mary Ann Busteed were the fastest. The Point Score was won by Will Foster from Bob Hunter and Joe Janas. Andrina Norden was a very popular recipient of the prestigious Encouragement Award. Trish Thomas successfully lobbied for two throwing events to be included each night of T&F. M45 John Hunt made his debut at a Vets T&F meet and immediately impressed with a 1.60m high jump. 37 completed the One Hour Run won by Garry Hand (M45) with a distance of 17,682m. Records were set by Anne Young (W55) 12,928m and Joe Mayer (M75) 9,324m. Our November 21 T&F program was a very special occasion as Westpac presented us with a most generous cheque for their sponsorship of next year s Australian Veterans Track and Field Championships. A special 800m handicap race featuring 22 invited veteran athle tes representing all age groups was a highlight of the evening and preceded the formalities.w40 pentathlete Margaret Taylor ran a 17 second PB to win easily in a time of 2:44.2. Merv Collins (M60) was second and Denise Bourne (W30) third. 20 YEARS AGO (December 1980). This year s Parliamentary Relays (for teams of 2 women and 8 men, each to run a mile loop around the Old Parliame nt House) was held in absolutely miserable conditions of rain and cold strong winds. We entered two teams. Our best performances were by Terry Munro 4.59, Brian Paxman (M50) 5.19, Tony Hammett 5.23, Roger Abbott 5.24, Jack Pennington (almost 60) 5.39 and Sue Pidgeon Vetrunner Maggi and Alan Johnson had recently arrived in Canberra from Melbourne and quickly became very active and involved members. 10 YEARS AGO (December 1990). Our weekly Track and Field program was attracting good attendances and performances as many of our members were preparing for the Australian Championships to be held here next Easter. 61 new records (34 by women and 27 by men) were set in the first half of the season. M70 Gordon Boag was setting records in a variety of events each time he turned up at the track. W60 Juani O Reilly was doing the same in the walks. Geoff Moore was enjoying a purple patch and was running excellent times in 800m and 1500m races. December 6 was a warm evening, just perfect for T&F. Early in the night s program 47 year old Chris Higgins (Secretary of Treasury) had an easy run in one of the 400m heats (69.2) then one hour later ran in the slower division of the 3,000m. He crossed the line in 12 th position in a time of but collapsed almost immediately. Chris suffered a major heart attack and despite the first aid administered by some of our medically qualified members and a little later by ambulance officers he died on the track. Bob Parker organized three closely matched teams to participate in the annual Parliamentary Relays. The Top Cats were our quickest team with a time of ahead of Unnamed Vets and Veteran Villains Top Cats consisted of Maureen O Shea, Ruth Hearnshaw (6.54), Mark Winson, Phil White (5.24), Jim O Shea, John Dimitriou, Alan Williams, Tony Booth (5.27), Bob Hunter and Colin Bridge (5.22).

Page 26 Vetrunner COMMITTEE CORNER Among the correspondence received during the month was an important item from Colin Browne as AAVAC Entries Clerk with reference to entries to the World Games. He is particularly anxious that all members follow the correct procedure with regard to validation and so I am printing the letter in full here. Firstly he points out that all entries by Australian residents must reach him by February Then goes on to state the requirements of a complete entry by an Australian resident, which are: 1. Correct completion of the entry form, with correct calculation of the entry fees. 2. Bank draft or cheque in AUS dollars payable to WORLD VETERANS ATHLETICS CHAMPIONSHIPS 2001 LTD, or Visa or MasterCard details. 3. Evidence of date of birth, eg. photocopy of birth certificate or drivers licence. 4. Name and telephone number of a contact for the team manager s use in case of an emergency. 5. Current financial membership of an Australian Veterans (or Masters) athletics club. Entrants who are members simply state the name of their club and we will check that statement with the club. You are also required to contribute $5 to the incidental expenses of AAVAC such as postage and the costs of providing team managers. A cheque for that amount, payable to AAVAC should accompany your entry. Entrants who are not members have two alternatives: a. Join up with your state club. The contact person in ACT is: Mick Corlis 64 Ragless Cct Kambah 2902 Ph: b. Pay $15 to AAVAC to become a temporary member, for which you will have your entry form validated, and for three months receive the AAVAC magazine Courier and the veterans magazine of your state to keep you informed about the WAVA Games and the activities of the state club. You are also required to pay the $5 for incidental expenses of AAVAC such as postage and the costs of providing team managers. To choose this option you must enclose a cheque payable to AAVAC for $20, separate from your other entry payments.
