It recognizes service and participation in this unique monthly event thus is a prestigious club-person award similar to the Encouragement Award for the monthly run/walk handicap program. Peter Neill is a worthy recipient of this year s trophy as he was in Peter is one of the members who usually turns up early to the monthly throwing handicap to help set out the throwing fields and almost always stays around to help clean up and put the equipment away. Many years ago Peter must have impressed others of his concern for safety because he is often the person to light the gas heated urn and to turn it off at the end of the post competition socializing. Peter s debut monthly throwing handicap was in February 1996 and has now completed 186. Along the way he has won four monthly trophies in June 1999, June 2004, February 2009 and May 2011 as well as four silver and three bronze medals. While waiting for his turn to throw Peter is always interested in telling fellow competitors tales of his fascinating family history in which some amazing facts of his ancestors have only come to light relatively recently. Several summers ago Peter was also a regular participant in the throwing events at our track and field meets. Peter was, and still is, a keen thrower and despite being restricted by a chronic leg injury, he has a very powerful arm allowing him to throw much further than most onlookers would expect. Although he didn t participate at either the 14th World Veterans Championships in Brisbane 2001 or at the World Masters Games in Melbourne the following year he spent ten days at each of the championships working long hours as a throws official. Shortly after joining the Vets in 1995 Peter took an active interest in administration and officiating. He was elected treasurer in June 1999 having served an apprenticeship as treasurer of the two previous Continued below Winter Weight Throwing Championships held in Canberra as well as being our moneyman for the 1999 Australian Veterans Track and Field Championships. He was elected to committee in 2000 but again took over looking after the club s finances when club treasurer Paulette Montaigne moved to France mid-way through her term. Peter had always been involved in sport and in his younger years was a highly respected, tough and aggressive local first grade Australian Rules footballer. In recent years Peter has added competitive indoor rowing as one of his favourite sports. Two weeks before turning 70, in August 2004, despite his dicky knees he was delighted to complete a half marathon (21.1km) in less than 90 minutes on an indoor rowing machine. He has performed this feat on his Concept 2 machine several more times as well as winning numerous medals in Australian Indoor Rowing Championships. Congratulations Peter Neill on being the 26 th recipient of the Clohessy Award Run/walk handicap roster lists for 2019 Peter Neill M80 with the Clohessy Trophies (Photo Suzie Gaynor) The Roster Lists and the Alphabetical List for 2019 are now on the website. Thank you to all those members who volunteered for duty. Those who didn't volunteer by mid January have been allocated duties. Please have a look at the Alphabetical Listing at the top of the monthly Duty Roster Lists which shows the month of duty for each member, and advise the Roster Manager at actvachandicap@gmail.com if the allocated duty month is not suitable. 3 . Happy New Year to all, I am sure this year will be fun, competitive and above all interesting. It won t be long before some of us will head to Melbourne for the 2019 AMA Nationals in late April, and there is also the World Masters Athletics indoor championships for those really keen, plus a good mix of weekend running and throws events for those who want to keep it local. The Canberra Festival of Athletics is on the long weekend in January. This is a huge opportunity for our club to showcase our competitive runners and inclusive nature, as we are featuring our spiral event in prime time. If you would like to run at the AIS before a crowd, with possible TV coverage, to help us showcase Masters Athletics and our famous spiral event (four laps), we would love to see you on the AIS Track on Monday 28 January It doesn t matter what running ability you have as it is a handicap, so we will all finish together. What we would like to see is lots of members all kitted our in the new club uniforms, finishing in the home straight at the same time. This would be a really great advertisement for the club, attracting new members and raising our public profile. As we return to regular competition in 2019, I would like to thank the hard working event sub-committees for keeping all our events running smoothly. I encourage all to consider volunteering to play their part in organising events. It s a great time to take a look at your calendar and plan a Throws or Cross Country handicap that you can help at. As our numbers decline, we may need people to volunteer more than once a year and if you haven t volunteered, you will be tapped on the shoulder and given a date to volunteer so put your hand up now and volunteer on a date or event of your choosing. In 2019, we will no longer see the St John Ambulance at our cross country events. The costs of having St John present were increasing, but the reality is that with trained first aid officers in the club, our emergency management plan in place, and almost everyone with a mobile phone that can call Triple Zero in an emergency, St John were offering little more than comfort. Our decision is in line with the local YMCA Canberra Runners Club, where many of our members also run, and rely on first aid officers to support events. There is change afoot at the way athletics is presented to the public, across Australia and soon in the ACT. Some of you may have heard of the One Sport concept or whole-oflife athletics. Joining forces with Little Athletics to Open Athletics to Masters, there are opportunities to consolidate the way we look to potential new members, the general public and our government (funding) representatives. This potential change is gathering pace with a scoping study to get us started. Our Masters club will have input into to the study along with representatives from Little Athletics and Athletics ACT, the other two lead athletics groups in the ACT. Our AGM will come around quickly in May, and we are in need of some specialist help on the committee, in particular a new treasurer and a registrar. Ken Smith has done a sterling job over the last two years with little experience in the books, and for the last six months, he has been acting registrar. After nine years volunteering in various club roles, Ken would like to hand over the books to focus on competing again and involvement in other aspects of the club. This year in May, we celebrate our 40th anniversary. There is discussion amongst members about how best to mark and celebrate this milestone. 4 Page 4 February 2019 Vetrunner Vale Dave McInnes STREET AND ICONIC FOREST TRAIL IMMORTALISES CHAMPION Dave McInnes died of pancreatic cancer 29 Nov Although Dave was only a member for five years, for a brief time in 1985 and then from 2004 to 2007, he was well known and respected by many members for his athletic achievements, friendship, cheekiness and because his business Instant Colour Press did much of our club s printing requirements over many years. Dave only participated in one monthly running handicap in the old 7km Watson High School course in which he had the fastest time and best age graded performance. Dave often said he would come out again when he turned 50 but only found the time to make it to three of our track and field meets. Dave was a champion long distance runner throughout the Running Boom of the 1970s and 80s. During that era he was the top distance runner in the ACT and was the first local athlete to challenge for national honours. He represented NSW and was successful in numerous fun runs, road and cross-country races as well as 5000m, 10,000m and steeplechase events on the track. In 1977 Dave was named NSW Distance Runner of the Year and was selected to represent Australia in two international marathons in which he completed in a little over 2hrs18m. (At the time ACT athletics was part of NSWAAA). Dave was a talented 17 year old schoolboy when he linked with Jack Pennington as his coach. Jack was himself a champion veteran athlete, coach, athletics scribe and administrator who later became the longest serving patron of the ACT Veterans/Masters Athletics Club. In his book A Life on the Run (pub.1995) Jack described Dave: as a teenager Dave was very tough and very dedicated and could run to complete exhaustion. In fact Dave often ran 100 mile weeks and trained three times a day of which one session was high intensity interval training. A personal anecdote illustrates an aspect of Dave s personality. Dave used to work night shift at Government Printers and frequently went for a run during his break or on his way home. One early dark and frosty pre-dawn morning while running around Lake Burley Griffin I encountered our local marathon champion dragging an adult kangaroo along the lake edge. I stopped and enquired what was happening and did he need help? Dave replied he had seen the kangaroo fall into the lake and said I couldn t leave the poor bugger to drown or freeze to death? So he pulled the kangaroo from the icy water and was dragging it up onto the Kings Avenue Bridge road in order to hail a passing motorist to take it to a vet. Fortunately, the first vehicle to arrive was a police patrol car and they took over from there. Dave s family and friends will remember him each time they enter Stromlo Forest Park because one of the roads into the area is named in his honour. Before the devastating 2003 wildfires that destroyed Stromlo Forest the most iconic running trail in the forest was the McInnes 10. But, how many novice runners or visitors to Canberra were caught unawares when half way through their run over the hilly forest trail realised the 10 in the McInnes 10 meant miles not kilometres? Bryan Thomas President s report (cont.) Cont. from p.3 I attended the final Track and Field, Throws and Cross Country events for 2018 and congratulate all our annual competition winners. These events really highlighted our motto, Fitness through Fellowship, sharing Christmas cheer and reflecting on the year s achievements. I acknowledge all those who competed earnestly to their full potential, making all the awards competitive and ultimately more rewarding for the winners. On a not so positive note, the committee recently investigated a member inclusion support and protection issue. This was unpleasant for all involved, and I thank the civil way in which members involved handled the enquiry. Although we have policies in place to protect us all, being considerate and respectful of your fellow athletes will avoid being taken down this path again. All our club policies are available for members to read on the website. The club has specific policies, constitutional requirements and a responsibility to treat all athletes the same. Hopefully everyone will come back from this incident with a renewed spirit of respect and consideration for their fellow athletes and the club in general. Last month, I mentioned the long-term planning document Club Performance Analysis. This is now ready for sharing with our sub-committees for discussion and consideration of improvements that we introduce to strengthen the club and make our competitions more attractive to new members. We welcome more ideas to improve the club and secure our future for the next 40 years. 5 Reporter: Bryan Thomas Bruce Graham wins Higgins a third time in a row Nineteen runners of all ages and abilities participated in the 28th Chris Higgins Memorial 800m Handicap on 6 December. Although this was one of the smaller fields in the long history of the event it was still a special race that was again successful and spectacular. Our annual memorial 800m handicap, the Higgins, was established exactly one year after the tragic death of M45 Chris Higgins following a 3000m race in December Place-getters World class M55 middle and long distance runner Bruce Graham won his third Higgins having previously been victorious in 2013 and After finishing third in 2008 and runner-up the following year Bruce won in 2013, was second again in both 2014 and 15 and third in 2016 and first in 2018 so he has never finished outside of the top three in eight outings. Bruce has enjoyed a superb year; being a standout athlete at both the AMA Championships in Perth and the World Masters Championships in Malaga, Spain as well as at local track and field meets. As an M65 John Lamb benefitted from an advantageous start so it was no surprise he caught the leaders early only to be overtaken in the finishing straight by Bruce. Despite engaging all his fast twitch muscles he couldn t narrow the gap to Bruce. John is prominent in the history of this special race as he has enjoyed five victories which is the most by any athlete. He won in 2007 as an M55, in 2009 as an M60 and as an M65 in 2014, 15 and 16 as well as being runner-up in 2010, 17 and 18. M45 Anthony Kennedy was third in his debut Higgins. His excellent run was not really a surprise as Anthony had performed well in middle distance events throughout November. Others at the front M55 Rod Lynch was fourth. Rod has been a regular participant in all middle distance races ranging from 400 to 3000m at track for many seasons. He was fifth in 2012, third in 2013, fourth in 2014, sixth last year and now fourth again; so the only top places Rod has yet to experience in his fifteen runs in this special event are first and second perhaps next year! Evergreen W65 Kathy Sims was amongst the leaders and first women once again. She crossed the line fifth. Like Bruce, John and Rod, Kathy has an excellent record in the event having been runner-up in 2012, fifth in 2011, sixth in both 2015 and 16 and fourth last year. Kathy has participated sixteen times and is one of only ten women who have placed in the top six in the race s twenty-eight year history. Kathy has had another successful year including some good performances in the middle distance races in Malaga and being a member of our select national W65 4x400m relay team that won a silver medal. Hard working committee man and regular participant at the track in all middle and long distance events as well as the steeple and pole vault M55 Nigel England stormed home to finish sixth in his fourth Higgins. The Stayers Jim White participated in this year s Higgins as well as in the inaugural event in December 1991 won by Tony Murray, former M40 World Record holder for the mile. Tony ran a time of 2:00.2 to finish just in front of a pair of M45 champions Garry Hand and Denis Smith. Last December Jim was 14th with a net time of 3:40 but twenty-eight years earlier he finished 24th in 2:28. Neil Boden, Pgresident of Athletics ACT, was helping as an official and as he February 2019 Vetrunner page 5 had also participated in the 1991 event he had a particular interest in this year s race. Bryan Thomas has been race organizer since its beginning. Twelve members have participated in ten or more of the twenty-eight Higgins conducted to date. Jim White is the only person to have run all. Tony Booth has run 19 and finished in the top six on a dozen occasions. Neil Boden, also in the inaugural event, participated in18 as have Cory Collins and Roger Pilkington, Kathy Sims has run16, Rod Lynch 15, Nick Blackaby14, Kevin Chamberlain and Phil White have each completed 13, Geoff Sims 12 while John Lamb has now run ten times. 6 Page 6 February 2018 Vetrunner Sue Bourke s history making 10th President s gift The women s final of the 25th President s 100m Handicap ( Gift ) conducted on our last evening of track and field for the year added more interesting history of this special annual event. All runners in the Gift are given a handicap start depending on their age; therefore younger athletes have to give those older athletes a start. This year the women finalists ranged in age from 41 to 83. All three place getters have added to the race history. Women s Final W55 Sue Bourke (picture) stormed home to win her tenth consecutive Gift. Will this incredible achievement ever be beaten? Sue won her first age based sprint handicap in 2009 and has been first across the line every year since as well as finishing second on four other occasions and third three times. How long can Sue continue this amazing string of victories? Because of her seniority W80 Cory Collins had a 26m start in front of Sue and was able to hold onto her lead until just before the finish line when she was overtaken. Like the winner Cory also has an impressive record in this race - she was fourth last year and has finished second on four other occasions and third three times. Cory s record of being the most senior person, man or woman, ever to feature on the podium for the event was beaten by another remarkable octogenarian Consie Larmour. Consie, being a year older than Cory, began her dash to the line 2m ahead of her W80 friendly rival. So now the record for the most successful senior ever to run in the Gift belongs to 83 yearold Consie. Fourth was W65 Maureen Rossiter who won in 2000 as a W50 then again for three consecutive years from 2002 to 2004 as well as being runner-up twice and third three times. W45 Raylene Campbell, usually the backmarker because of being the youngest in the field this year handed over the honour to our club vice president W40 Nikki Phelps. Raylene finished fifth and Nikki sixth. Better known as a champion long distance runner W75 Caroline Campbell was seventh. Only a few weeks earlier Caroline had set an ACT Record for the one hour run after having recently returned from the WMA Championships in Malaga with a bronze medal in the 1500m and a team medal in cross-country. This year Caroline has also added the throwing events to her athletic interests. Men s Final M50 Michael Roden (picture by Suzie Gaynor) won for the eighth time. Like Sue, Michael has an outstanding record and is the most successful male sprinter ever in this feature handicap sprint. Michael first won the Gift in 2001 then again in 2005, 07, 09, 12, 13, 16 and now Michael is a very talented sprinter especially as a 400m runner; for example only the legendary Reg Austin from Sydney, a member of the AMA Hall of Fame, has run the 400m race quicker than he has as an M50 athlete. If Michael was prepared to participate away from Canberra he would be a potential medallist in all events from 60 to 400m at both national and world championships. World class sprinter and hurdler M65 John Lamb finished second. John has won the Gift four times in 2011, 2014, 2015 and 2017 as well as being runner-up on three other occasions and third once. John is the only person to have won both a Higgins and a Gift in the same year, which he did in He was hoping he might do it again this year but he finished second in both the 2018 Higgins and Gift. M60 Leo Kennedy was third. Leo has featured on the podium eight times from his eleven participations in this event he won in 2008 and 2010 as well as being runner-up four times and third twice. Relative newcomer to Masters Athletics M45 David Austin was fourth. Champion M65 thrower Duncan Macnicol was fifth. Duncan s excellent performance in a sprint race may have surprised many onlookers but they should have recalled that he was third in the 2017 final. I never fail to mention that M55 Angel Marina was a first grade winger for the early Raiders rugby league team but ever since he joined the club Angel has participated in this special sprint and this year in his eighth consecutive final he finished sixth. He was third in Finishing seventh was M45 Ming Yung. Ming was second in 2015 in his only other run in the event. The backmarker in the field of eight in the final was new member M35 Leigh Harlow. Unfortunately Leigh suffered a muscle strain during the race and was forced to limp to the finish line in eighth place. Hopefully Leigh will enjoy are better run next year. Survivors This was Jim White s eighteenth participation the most runs in the Gift. Both Sue Bourke and Ray Bramwell have run 17, Maureen Rossiter 15, Margaret Taylor 13, John Lamb and Gary Maher 12 each, Leo Kennedy 11 while Cory Collins, Kevin Matthews and Michael Rodin have participated in ten. Some have been regulars in both the Higgins and Gift. Jim White has the most outstanding participation record in these two feature events with a total of 46 (consisting of 28 Higgins + 18 Gifts ). Next highest is Cory Collins 28 ( ) followed by Tony Booth 24 (19 + 5) and Maureen Rossiter 24 (9 + 15). Bryan Thomas has organized all Higgins and Gifts Higgins and Gift The Higgins is traditionally held on the first Thursday evening in December so the 29th Chris Higgins Memorial 800m Handicap should be Thursday 5 December The special 100m handicap for men and women is usually the feature event at our last track and field night prior to the Christmas break so the 26th Gift should be on 19 Dec Bryan Thomas

7 Reporter; Geoff Barker February 2019 Vetrunner page 7 Run walk Handicap Central Curtin 25 November 2018 On one of the nicest days in almost a week, 87 members did a run or walk at Central Curtin for the final handicap of the year. It was still a bit chilly though when out of the sun. Members were welcomed by two banners proudly displayed on a nearby fence. One said ACT MASTERS ATHLETICS; the other one, just as large said ACT VETER- AN ATHLETICS. Under the guidance of Deb and Ken Gordon - family Maddy & Alex, (fresh from competing in the Queanbeyan Gift the day before), the events started right on time to a very well marked course, and all volunteers on the day did excellent work, even offering a glass of cheer after the event. Also good to report that the St John Ambulance people were not called on at all, but their presence was welcomed anyway. In the 3.0km Waddell event first over the line, and gold medallist was W60 Linda Bone. Linda said she found the course fairly flat and thinks it is one of the easiest courses. However she did not really expect a medal but towards the end, she realised she was passing a few walkers and some told her she was on her way to a medal, which got her thinking, especially as the finish line approached. She does admit to sneaking a look back to try and see if any backmarkers were catching up. Linda says her greatest sporting achievement was being ranked in the top 10 squash players of the ACT. Not too sure how long ago this was but indications are it is not recently. Linda is now retired and has taken up a new sport - golf. This, it seems, is also her training for walking races! Being second over the line meant the silver medal for our editor of Vetrunner, M65 Robert Kennelly, and it was his third medal in 65 starts in the handicaps. His other two were bronze so he is hoping for gold next time! Robert has been a regular walker in the Thomas series but has had a few physical procedures in the last year which made him make the decision to do the Waddell as this meant he was not exposing himself to further problems. As it was, Robert's walk at Curtin was in fact only six days post his third shoulder surgery. However it was his third consecutive Waddell and Robert felt that doing the longer Thomas series, previously, actually helped him in his walks on the shorter distance. The course at Curtin is actually part of Robert's normal training run where he does a 1.1km course most days, so he knows it well. Even though he had one arm in a sling, he went as hard as he could hoping for a top dozen finish. He really worried towards the end because "heaps of people" passed him, including Linda Bone. It was not until towards the finish he realised they were Frylink competitors - running. Overall Robert was "impressed' with his performance, and feels race walking holds a future for him as his shoulders make his "throwing" events very difficult. As mentioned Robert is our very valuable Vetrunner Editor, a role he enjoys because he is able to keep abreast of all that is happening within the club. He is actually still looking for a guest editor in May 2019, and the reason he needs guest editors is because he loves travelling, as evidenced by his very interesting articles in recent Vetrunners. Robert also extends his thanks to the volunteers at Curtin and the St John's people too. And third over the line gave the bronze medal to M80 Peter Kallio, an athlete of considerable achievements both in and out of club competitions. Peter was quietly confident of his chances at Curtin because at Ainslie Woodlands in October he had just missed out on a place and then gratefully saw his handicap had been brought forward a group. So being an experienced athlete he planned his "walk" and tried hard to make it happen. He likes the Curtin course because there is much less chance of tripping, than on the rougher courses. Peter has achieved many notches in his running career, and says his best effort was in 1987 when he won the M50 Marathon at the world Master Games in a time of 2:30:52; an Australian record which he still holds. Now with a story similar to many 'runners' Peter has become a walker because of knee replacements, but he still enjoys participating in the handicaps as he likes to test himself against his peers. He walks about 6km on most days as part of his training. He regularly attends the Tuesday group and a very keen bushwalker, being a driving force and motivator behind the fortnightly bushwalks around the ACT, and beyond, enjoyed by many members. Coming home in the middle of the pack was M75 Warren Butler, the accomplished MC at the handicaps. Warren admits to getting some last minute training from legendry medal winner, Rosemary Parker, before the race started. Her advice was to "move your feet quicker, and you will go faster". Cont. p.9 Linda Bone W60 took gold by 22 sec from Robert Kennelly M65 (right) with silver and eight secs further back to Peter Kallio M80 with bronze. 9 February 2019 Vetrunner page 9 Run walk Handicap Central Curtin 25 November 2018 (cont) Cont. from p.7 Warren says he did, but it didn't work! However he was happy with his walk and says Curtin is in fact his favourite course. He does not have a strict training routine but does enjoy the Tuesday morning group and is a regular at Val Chesterton's Friday training group. He also does park runs so he feels that is all good. Warren first joined the club in 1989, but in 2000 went to live in Sydney working for National Acoustic Laboratories for ten years. On retirement he returned to the ACT and the club, because he likes the atmosphere and camaraderie. Warren and Des have done many bushwalking adventures with at least six in Spain. However Warrens feels his greatest sporting achievement is completing the Honolulu Marathon in 1990, with Des, to celebrate their 50th birthdays. As well as being our MC Warren is a valued member of the handicap committee. The Laterne Rouge for being 22nd, in the Waddell went to W75 Suzanne Counsel, who says she was not surprised with her placing as she is in need of a bit of "wear and tear" repair work, making her walking a bit harder than usual, but all things considered she was happy to get over the line. She also liked the course saying it is one of the 'easier ones'. Sue has been a member since 1985 and considers her greatest sporting achievement has been completing over 300 handicaps and 28 Vets half marathons. Because Sue no longer runs her "training" consists of exercising everyday to keep her 'mobility' going. The exercises include indoor cycling, pitch and putt golf and water exercises classes. Sue says it is a 'wonderful' club offering many opportunities for competing, socialising and making good friends. In the 3km Frylink first over the line and gold medallist was M80, Bill Egan, who had set out to win a medal, because he thought the shorter distance would be an advantage to him. An advantage because in the last three years Bill has had very low running activity because of injuries, health and overseas travel all taking their toll. As a result Bill's handicap had come well down, but he has been improving, so hoping it would be harder for the back markers to catch up Bill decided it was "now or never", because he knew he had a 'soft' handicap! Bill started at, what he says was a cracking pace, fading a bit at the turn but could see he had a good lead on the back markers, so he just held on the best he could, and had a happy ending. Bill's training consists of a 4.5km solo run three times a week. Actually he says it is on a hilly course so is really a 'slow plod'. A former Bill Egan M80 first with Shane Hutchison presenting the Frylink Shield, Anthony Perry M50 and Carol Baird W65. head of IT at the Australian Bureau of Statistics Bill has been running for many years. He says his greatest sporting achievement was completing the 1980 Canberra Marathon in 3:3:33. It was his second marathon. The silver medal went to M50, Anthony Perry for being second over the line, which he says being a shorter course he was hoping for an improvement on his km rate. He was also buoyed by the previous Vetrunner report (Dec '18) which said he was "a short priced favourite for a podium finish". He enjoyed the course but knew the fast downhill first km would hurt in the final km home - and it did! Anthony first joined the Masters in 1994 but early in the 2000's had to give running a miss because of injury. However he is now back into training and does about 15-20km per week aiming to reach 30km per week. He is also a park runner and is aiming to break 20mins for the Tuggeranong park run. And for about 20 yrs Anthony has regularly played Ultimate Frisbee. He is also kept busy taking his daughter, Annaliese, to her cricket training and Saturday mornings being an all important groundsman for her games. Anthony has two greatest sporting achievements, one of which is actually what he calls a non-achievement. He is very happy with his 2:31:04 in the 1995 Canberra Marathon. His ambition was to break 2:30 and so entered the 1997 Gold Coast Marathon to achieve his aim. At the 40km mark his time was 2:20:53 and he was feeling good, and confident. However at the 41km mark Anthony went down in a screaming Des Butler and Kent Williams crunching our numbers heap and finished the marathon in an ambulance! He has never run another marathon. Anthony works for the Dept of Human Services and has an interest in genealogy. His father, Jack, was a keen member for many years, before his passing in 2007, and his sister Claire has completed over 100 handicaps but now concentrates on the throwing events. And being third over the line gave the bronze medal to W65, Carol Baird, who says felt she was going to have a good run because just the week before she really ran well in the 13km final leg of the Triple Tri, which was over Red Hill. And two weeks before she was very pleased with her run in the Carcoar half marathon. Regardless she did try hard at Curtin, as she always does, and needed to give herself an extra push to make sure she got past Roger Abbot near the end. She also liked the running on the bitumen. Carol is a keen athlete and uses races to help maintain her fitness. During 2018, as well ACT events, she ran half marathons in Orange, Mudgee, Dubbo, Forbes and Carcoar as part of the regional championships. With points gained for position in the runs Carol was placed second in the W60-69 group. One of Carol's favourite runs is the 45km Six Foot Track and has done 12, all under six hours. Currently she is the oldest female competing and is aiming to claim the W70 record. Carol is a regular at the Tuesday group and a very keen bushwalker, regularly participating in the fortnightly walks with the Peter Kallio/Alan Burden group. And with other bushwalking and camping Carol is sure it all helps with her training. Her other main interest, and to which she devotes a lot of time, are her four grandchildren, Jaclyn, Jay, Cooper and Mackenzie. Cont. p.10

10 Page 10 February 2019 Vetrunner Run walk Handicap Central Curtin 25 November 2018 (cont) Cont from P.9 She says it is seems just a continuation of her "stay at home mum" life, but she not complaining. In middle of the pack was M65 Ian Bowden, who says due to previous results he expected to finish about there. Ian actually combined his run with volunteering on the day, helping set up as he often does. Then he heard there was a need for more timekeepers so he told Deb Gordon that if he started the Thomas runners he could do his Frylink and then; 'time keep' the Thomas runners finishing. Simple! All went well although Ian was a bit sore after a fall on the previous Tuesday group run which resulted in a few scrapes. At Curtin he felt he had a good run and wanted to beat Gary Bowen and Frank Kresse to try and keep up in the point score. However despite trying hard on the downhill that didn't eventuate with both Gary and Frank passing him, and he was "buggered on the way back". However his aim then was to get back before Kent Williams, who he knew would be the in front of the Thomas runners. And this was achieved, so he immediately set up to record the Thomas runners coming home. A retired accountant, Ian has been involved in many and varied sporting activities since his school days, and very often in a volunteering role. He says his proudest achievement is running the Canberra Marathon in 1991 in just on four hours, which he says was the longest he has ever done one activity without stopping. However he has been involved in many other sporting activities such as the 2000 Olympics, 2003 Rugby World Cup, 2010 Australian Transplant Games, 2015 Asian Soccer Cup and 2015 World Cup Cricket. These days Ian says his only ambitions are to keep participating and stay healthy. Being a keen participant of the of the regular Tuesday group helps him do this. Coming home in 19th position gave the Laterne Rouge for the Frylink to new member W40 Bosi Bett, who was having only her third run ever, and all three with the Masters. She was thrilled to get a PB. She thought the course was great and followed Joan Mallory, and Suzie Gaynor was an inspiration for her too. Bosi has not done much in the way of organised sporting activities since school and so is getting into a training routine of walking in the evenings or at lunch time from her work as a research assistant with Agricultural Research. Bosi says her greatest sporting achievement is the fact that she has started running and her ambition is to run a handicap without stopping. She finds the runners at the handicaps are very inspirational and encouraging, and it has inspired her greatly, giving her real motivation to continue. When not running - training - Bosi likes to read and listen to music. She also has two teenage sons Andrew who plays soccer, and Sam who plays rugby, and attends their games. No doubt they have inspired to start running. It goes without saying that M70 Kent Williams was the first over the line in the 6.3km Thomas. Kent generously gives up any aim to win medals because he works behind the scenes recording the results as soon as they arrive. The aim for Kent is to finish as soon as he can so he is not rushing too much. Usually he achieves this. It is fitting that at this time a debt of gratitude should be extended to Kent for his dedication and commitment to ensuring the results are done as quickly and as efficiently as possible.. A result usually achieved. So "thank you" Kent. Kent's most memorable sporting event was his 1st marathon in Sept 1990, which was the Man From Snowy River Marathon held in Cooma. It was out up Billygoat Hill and back finishing in the main street Kent took it very seriously only to find he offended volunteers when he did not stop to have a tea or or coffee during the race. At the end there was a participation medal presented by a local who had run dressed as the devil. After the presentation finishers were offered a very delectable looking Aussi lamington. Kent, a bit hungry at this stage eagerly took one and as soon as possible took a big bite only to find it was cube of yellow foam coated in chocolate and coconut. All in all a memorable experience! Fifth over the line was good enough for this month's embarrassed reporter, M70 Geoff Barker (from now on known as Geoff) to win the gold medal. His immediate thought was that there was a mistake. He has been walking the Thomas for some years but in 2018 started jogging the event - often slower than when he walked them! Very surprised when towards the end there did not seem to be many runners passing, because usually he is swamped in the last km or so. His main worry was that his arch rival John Dimitriou would pass him. He didn't. The trouble now is that Geoff's handicap has gone back to group eight while John's has remained on three. Geoff has two great sporting achievements he would like to share. His first was in the 2006 Six Foot Marathon he came 2nd in the M60 group. The other was in 1961 he won a Club Cycling Road Racing Championship. Not sure of the distance. A member of 'Masters' since 2001 he enjoys the friendly atmosphere of the club and finds everyone very supportive. He enjoys the Tuesday group, and the fortnightly bushwalks when he can make them. He was regularly attending Val Chesterton's Friday training group once a year but has been a bit inconsistent the last couple of years. He is also an occasional park runner and also likes street orienteering. Geoff is very grateful to the club for the support expressed when he lost his son Hugh, in He has his other four offspring, Joel, Clare, Max and Tessa who are spread around Australia and keep him busy. Otherwise he collects stamps and tries to keep the garden tidy, (not very successfully) and perhaps a bit of reading. Being sixth over the line gave the silver medal to W45 Nadine Morrison who thought it was bit unusual when she started with David Baussman, because they often juggle for a better position - courtesy of the handicapper of course. Nadine has been fighting a few injuries of late, but has managed a few longer runs which helped her and she actually felt pretty good during the race. 11 February 2019 Vetrunner page Connell Shield & Monthly Throwing Hcap for December Grant Blewitt made a late run to draw level with the early favourite Tanya Colyer which resulted in a tie for the yearly pointscore trophy. Both throwers finished with a total of 354 points. Third place went to Bryan Thomas nine points behind the winners and one point clear of Warwick Budd. Fifty throwers recorded a score in the ten monthly handicap events held during the year. The winner of the November handicap was Bob Banens. His good form in the javelin helped him finish with a good margin of forty eight centimetres over Caroline Campbell. Ten centimetres back in third place was Margaret Taylor. Leading all throwers in the hammer was Jayne Hardy with a big throw of Ray Green was the best of the men recording a best effort of A throw of saw Grant Blewitt take the honours among the men in the javelin while Jayne Hardy led the women with a best toss of After the completion of the two handicap events the competitors adjourned to the nearby scout hall for a barbeque and presentations. The major award for the year, the Clohessy trophy, went to Peter Neill. (See lead article front page of this months Vetrunner for a report). A presentation for the yearly pointscore trophy was also made to Tanya Colyer and Grant Blewitt. The November Oscar was awarded to Nikki Phelps. Her effort in one of her javelin throws in which she lost her grip & barely landed the javelin in the throwing area was deemed worthy of the award. The winner of the wine donated by the club was Narelle Blackaby. The next monthly throwing handicap will be on February 23 rd The full years program along with the monthly throws pentathlon is available on the club website and on p. 25 of this Vetrunner. (photos; Suzie Gaynor) Seven members turned up to Masson St for the first Throws Pentathlon of Even though the day was supposed to be warm, it was quite pleasant throwing. Three men and four women had a great time. There was a good battle in the W75 category with Jan Banens leading the way with strong performances in the Hammer and Weight Throw. Raylea Rudov (still carrying an ankle injury) and Caroline Campbell had a close comp, ending up with only two points separating them.jayne Hardy (W55) managed to get the Hammer out to 40.30m and there was a close tussle between Bob Banens(M65), Jan Banens (W75) and John Reynolds (M70) for the next furthest Hammer Throw with Jan getting there with 31.64m. Bob Banens was the strongest in the field in the Shot, Discus and Javelin while John Reynolds had a good hurl in the Weight Throw to get the implement out over 13m. I think the final score for Caroline Campbell may have been a PB as her previous best was around 2161 points last year in January well done Caroline. Rad Leovic (M90) was a little down on his results, but it was good to see him hurling with his best points coming from the Shot Put. 12 Page 12 February 2019 Vetrunner Dick Telford AM, our patron and former club member has just been inducted into the ACT Sport Hall of Fame. Dick Telford AM is a prominent personality within the local and national sporting community and is an advocate for promoting healthy lifestyles. Dick has an impressive record of achievements and honours and this month was the recipient of another being inducted into the ACT Sport Hall of Fame. The story behind his latest honour was featured in the Saturday November 10 edition of the Canberra Times. However, the number of occasions I have been fortunate to hear him speak or read about his sporting exploits I notice he rarely mentions his outstanding performances as a Veteran / Masters athlete. Thus, to correct this oversight here is an outline of Dick Telford the champion M40 middle distance runner of the late 1980s. Dick was a member of ACTVAC from 1985 to 1988 during which time he was a regular at our track and field meets in which he participated in all events from 800 to 5000m. Dick was a world class veteran middle distance runner who won medals at national and world championships. His PBs as an M40 800m 1:58, 1500m 3:57, mile 4:24 and 5000m 15:17 were all ACT Records at the time. Two highlights of his veteran athletics career were the memorable battles with fellow club member Garry Hand in the 800 and 1500m finals at the 1987 Australian Championships in Sydney and the unbelievable dead heat for third place with fellow Canberran Tony Murray in the final of the M m in 3:57.94 at the 1987 World Championships in Melbourne. Dick also ran many half marathons one of which was the 1983 ACT Vets Half when he ran the event in 71 minutes. He also completed six marathons; his best being 2:27.54 as an M35 in the 1982 Big M Marathon in Melbourne. Incidentally in August 1985 he ran his one and only monthly handicap on the old Hospital Jetty course. In 1981 the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) was established and Dick was appointed Director of Sport Science. He not only had the academic qualifications for the role but he also had a background in playing and coaching elite sport at the highest level especially in the VFL and as coach of the Victorian Sheffield Shield cricket team. In his position at the AIS Dick was a leader of many internationally recognised research projects into all aspects of sport physiology as well as supervising research undertaken by PhD students. Dick has always been interested in coaching distance runners many of which have performed well at the highest levels including at World Championships and Olympic and Commonwealth Games. He was physiologist to the Australian swimming team at the 1984 LA Olympics and national distance running coach at both the 1992 and 1996 Olympic Games. Although Dick retired from the AIS in 2005 he has continued to coach and in 2014 he was Athletics Australia Coach of the Year. Apart from currently being an Adjunct Professor at the ANU and a frequent guest on ABC Canberra Radio where he discusses a variety of topics associated with health and physical activity, Dick is still an active and popular distance running coach and in November 2018 he was inducted into the ACT Sport Hall of Fame. In 2017 Dick was chosen as ACT Australian Senior Person of the Year and a few months later was elected our fifth club patron following on from a long-time friend Jack Pennington OAM who had been our patron for twenty-two years. (photo tiona Kane) Running, Aging and Just Doing It A poem by Richard Scutter Age takes its toll as we all know. Last year I was asked to write some words for the Achilles Running Group. They set such a good example participating under difficult circumstances and these vision impaired runners combat their Achilles weakness and manage to get out for exercise. We all have some form of Achilles difficulty if not so obvious. So here s to all those that get out there anyway no matter what! Achilles was an outstanding warrior. It was unfortunate that his mother made that little mistake in coverage. When I dip my apricots into the chocolate sauce I make sure all the apricot is totally covered! My Tanka poem in recognition of all who struggle no matter the adversity - they battle bravely despite their weaknesses Oh to follow their example like Achilles!... and here is a running tip I happen to notice that as age takes its unwelcome effect on how we run many have a downward arch pointing to the ground. The reason is obvious as we don t want to fall over! But how you hold your head is the key to overall posture, which determines how efficiently you run. Let your gaze guide you, look ahead naturally, not down at your feet, and scan the horizon. This will straighten your neck and back and bring them into alignment. Don't allow your chin to jut out. The position of your torso while running is affected by the position of your head and shoulders. With your head up and looking ahead and your shoulders low and loose, your torso and back naturally straighten to allow you to run in an efficient, upright position that promotes optimal lung capacity and stride length. Many track coaches describe this ideal torso position as "running tall" and it means you need to stretch yourself up to your full height with your back comfortably straight. If you start to slouch during a run take a deep breath and feel yourself naturally straighten. As you exhale simply maintain that upright position. Good times cannot be found by running with your head set down. Look up into that bright blue sky and love each run with your head held high!

18 Page 18 February 2019 Vetrunner Run walk Handicap (cont) Milestone Tee shirts Cont. from p. 10 She did feel a bit pressured to get ahead and stay in front of David. Being a circuit course Nadine says she had no idea where she was placed - maybe 20th! Then on crossing the line she was surprised when she saw her card with number nine! Then when she took it to the check in she realised it was number six, a real surprise, although she still didn't think there was a medal at hand. Nadine says her greatest sporting achievement was completing the 1995 London Marathon. Nadine enjoys the club and is a willing helper many times. She is also a regular, with her twins, Molly and Darcy at the Tuesday morning group. She has introduced them to Ginninderra Little Athletics and the Canberra Runners Minijog. W70 Mary-Ann Busteed won the bronze medal for being seventh over the line and says she was surprised with her placing. Mary Ann started in 1983 and has done 270 handicaps and this was her sixth medal - all bronze. She was happy with her run, being able to overtake the other three runners in her group, after being behind them on "the hill" at the start. Only three runners past her - including Nadine, so she thought she was doing OK. Mary Ann has a running background, ranging from being her Senior School Champion, to winning the HR Heher Shield for outstanding achievement in amateur sport in Tuggeranong Valley, in A former track and field and cross country runner, she has run 11 marathons, (PB 2:59) and 21 City to Surf (PB 54:15) Her PB for the 52km Brindabella Classic is 5:22. And numerous half marathons with a PB of 84:18. She has represented ACT in the 15km Road Championships and Marathons. A nurse for 51 years, Mary Ann still runs usually six days a week; including the Jogalong, Park Runs, and the Tuesday morning group which she shares with Matilda three years, her granddaughter. She enjoys the Masters saying she has made several friends. When she gets the time she also enjoys bike riding, bush walking and gardening. Coming home in the middle of the pack was one of the clubs valued committee members, M70 Robbie Costemeyer, who was the subject of a very interesting article in the December Vetrunner, which hopefully we all have read. Robbie certainly has given his share to the community, and the club, being its Public officer and a member of the main committee. And he enjoyed the Curtin Course as it had everything, - ups, downs, level bits, and there were times when you could see the runners up ahead. Robbie had some physio on the Friday before and then had done a 2000m steeplechase at the AIS the day before, so even though he was thankfully pain free he says he may have had the edge of his speed. But he was still happy with his 78% age percentage. 22nd position gave the Laterne Rouge for the Thomas, and the year, to M80, Lachie Lewis, who was backing up after winning his age group in the Jackie Fairweather triathlon the previous day, which, he says is the reason he was bit slower at Curtin. Lachie loves the Curtin course for several reasons. It is close to home, has nice views and a good course to run on. And he says the officials did their usual terrific job with marking the course etc. Lachie has represented Australia in many overseas events with a very memorable one being the 2004 Great Wall of China Marathon. However one of his proudest achievements was this year when he was the first Australian to finish the M80 World Olympic Distance Triathlon Championships for the second consecutive year. The Olympic distance is 1:5km swim, 40km cycle, and 10km run. This year he came 6th and was actually a 30mins faster than last year when he came 4th. The M80 group is becoming very competitive! Lachie a retired dentist has been a member of the club for 32 years. He would like members to know he is extremely grateful to everyone for all their support over the years. He says he really does appreciate it, and says "thank-you" to everyone. Geoff Barker Steve Bradford 150 handicaps Steve ran his first handicap at Mulligan s Flat in July 1999 and amazingly he went on to win the Thomas Series point score in his first year of participation. All but six have been in the long course event and to date Steve has won nine medals four gold, two silver and three bronze. Due to a period of ill health Steve was forced to change to the Waddell Series in which he enjoyed instant success by winning three gold medals and a silver in his six efforts as a determined race walker. Injury prevented Steve from making his marathon debut with wife Prue in the 2001 Canberra Marathon but he managed to join her in the 2002 event. In January year-old Steve suffered what could have been a fatal heart attack but fortunately it occurred in the Canberra Hospital coronary care unit. Following treatment he returned to work in February and for many months he limited his participation to walking in the Waddell Series at our monthly handicaps. Steve reported on the symptoms and subsequent treatment of his heart attack and his rehabilitation in the February 2006 edition of Vetrunner. Fortunately Steve s rehab was so successful that by the middle of 2007 he was again running well. He won the M50 title in our 2007 ACT Vets Half Marathon, his second victory in this event having previously been M45 champion in He continued his remarkable recovery by clinching his second long course annual point score as well as being crowned 2007 King of the Mountain for the series. Nigel England 50 handicaps Shortly after arriving in Canberra from Perth Nigel and wife Lorna became involved with our club. Nigel s debut monthly handicap was on the Mt Taylor course in August 2012 and to date all have been in the long course in which he is always one of the back-markers. Nigel has won four medals (a silver and a bronze) and was third in the 2017 Thomas Series annual point score. Nigel is an enthusiastic middle distance runner who participates in all our track races 800m and longer as well as the steeplechase and pole vault. In 2015 he was the male winner of the Adler Series. Nigel has participated in several national championships and tasted international competition at the 2016 WMA Championships held in Perth. Nigel is a talented administrator. He is currently club secretary and also a member of our Track and Field Subcommittee responsible for the roster of officials. His ability as a leader is also obvious as a key member of the very successful Tuggeranong Park Run organization. Bryan Thomas (Pictures of Steve Bradford and Nigel England are on page 20. Ed.)

20 Page 20 February 2019 Vetrunner The Way We Were: January 2019 By Bryan Thomas January 2019 marks the beginning of our fortieth year so from now on each month s Way We Were will record what we were doing 40, 30, 20 and 10 years ago. 40 YEARS AGO (January 1979) The Running Boom that infected much of Western society was in full swing. This was an era of community fun runs, a thriving ACT Cross-Country Club, a healthy local athletics inter-club scene while an American publication Runners World and the brand new Australian magazine Fun Runner were essential reading for all would-be runners. Many Canberra men and a few women over 30 yearsof-age were enthusiastically caught up in this fitness fad. Most were long distance runners but a few were sprinters - some were even professionals! race walkers or throwers. The climate was favourable for the emergence of a club catering to mature-aged athletes but it would be a couple of months before such an event would come about. John Harding won the Kosciuszko Classic, Australia s highest race. The 12km race started and finished at Mt Crackenback then via the track from Rawson Pass to the Summit and returning by road. John s time was an excellent 45:36. On the same weekend Keith Bradley ran 29:45 to win the 9km Thredbo Fun Run. 30 YEARS AGO (January 1989) W35 Margaret Taylor made her debut in veterans athletics when she competed for the first time in many years. Although she didn t win her events she impressed onlookers. Charlie Rann set an M60 Australian Record for the hammer when he threw 46.82m. Tony Murray wrote to the editor of Vetrunner thanking members for their support in his quest for the M40 mile World Record (4:12.56) he set in Melbourne last month...while I was disappointed with my time, I do know that I would not have contemplated attacking the record without the encouragement and support of a large number of club members. In a real sense the record belongs to the Club participated in the 7km running handicap at East Basin won by Lesley Woods (Hamilton) from Andrina Norden and Tony Booth. Tony Murray and Mary Ann Busteed (picture by Suzie Gaynor) were fastest. Bronwyn Muller (Gardiner) and Keith Butler were presented with their 50 runs T shirts. As our participation numbers had been increasing throughout the previous year it was decided to allocate points to the first 100 finishers. Rudov W55 heavy weight 13.35m, Margaret Taylor W50 60m 8.6, 100m 13.8 and LJ 4.76m and Jack Thackray M65 60m 8.4. Our M65 4x100m relay team of John Burns, Otmar Dorfer, Jack Perry and Jack Thackray ran A record 242 participated in the monthly running handicap at Molonglo Reach. 181 ran the 6km event won by Michael Mills from Annie Van Herck and Carol Ey. 61 ran the short course won by Carmen Carlon ahead of Cilla Chapman and Maureen Rossiter. Stuart J Reid was presented with his 150 runs T shirt, Lorna Burdon 100 while Jillian Clark, Patrick McNeile and Ron Weir their YEARS AGO (January 2009) This was the beginning of the club s 30th year and we were thinking of appropriate ways of celebrating the highlight was to be a special dinner/dance later in the year. Relay events proved popular at the track and three new ACT Records were set during January. The record setting relay quartets were the W40 team of Jackie Fairweather, Sarah Fien, Amanda Walker and Jane Zeller in the 4x1500m with a time of 21:17.01 and an M70 combination of Roger Abbott, Tony Booth, Bob Chapman and Michael Freer who set new standards for both the 4x1500m and 4x800m. Individual records were set by W45 Ann Jugovic 2000mW 9:59.00 and by M70 Colin Robbie in the pole vault with a clearance of 2.00m. A dramatic electrical storm caused our annual one hour run at the track to be abandoned mid-way. Despite it being summer participants in the first run/walk monthly handicap of the year, being held at Campbell Park, were confronted with unseasonal chilly conditions. The long course was won by Rosita Deck from Michael Clancy and Brett Morrison. Robert Gerrard won the Frylink event in front of Leanne Steinman and Merv Collins. The Waddell walk handicap was won by Tony Fenotti just ahead of Pauline Rohan and Rod Gilchrist. Mary Ann Busteed became the fourth woman to complete 200 handicaps. Because Mary Ann s husband John had run his 200th more than a year earlier they became the second husband and wife combination, behind Rob and Rosemary Parker, to achieve this milestone. Bryan Thomas 20 YEARS AGO (January 1999) Alan Wilson resigned as secretary after three years in the position. Alan was not only secretary but was also Registrar and handicapper of the Daniels Series. Over the past five months Alan was involved in an unresolvable conflict with another member. As a result of Alan s resignation a Special Meeting was held at the AIS Track during one of our regular track and field evenings at which Fay Stenhouse was elected acting secretary. Neil Boden, coordinator of our LOC for the Australian Championships, to be held in Canberra over Easter, put out a call for officials. Many track and field records were set during the month. Alistair Davey M30 shot 12.40m and discus 37.81m, Ewen Drummond M75 LJ 3.20m and TJ 6.68m, Lesley Hamilton W55 60m 8.9, Chris Mahe W W 13:11 and 3000W 19:51, Miriam McCarthy W W 15:18, Raylea Steve Bradford M60 with his 150 handicap tee shirt. 23 The Way We Were: February 2019 Reporter; Bryan Thomas 40 YEARS AGO (February 1979) Ken Daniels advertisement in the Canberra Times calling for a meeting of persons interested in establishing a club for mature-aged athletes was the first step in the creation of the ACTVAC. Seventeen persons attended the meeting held in a private home in Watson. Those in attendance were Malcolm Bone, Arthur Brown, Nigel Crew, Ken Daniels, Peter Frylink, Peter Hanlin, Peter Kallio, John Keen, Laurie and Wendy Kupree, Bob Mee, Ken Miller, Rod Moore, Terry Munro, Brian Paxman, Patrick Robertson and Ray Robbins. Apologies were received from Jack Pennington, Paul Rudkin, Eric Sales, Warwick Selvey, Nigel Spurling and Denis Wilson. The meeting, presided over by Ken, elected a steering committee of Ken, Nigel, Peter Frylink and Terry. It was decided the new club be known as the ACT Veterans Amateur Athletics Club and that Sir William McMahon be asked to be its patron. A draft constitution was discussed and would be presented at an inaugural AGM. 30 YEARS AGO (February 1989) We were enjoying record attendances in excess of 130 at our weekly track and field meets. This season our annual track and field championships were conducted over several Thursday evenings. Early each Saturday morning large groups of up to 40 or more were gathering at the Cotter Reserve to run the infamous Cotter 15 or 18 or even 21 mile loops in preparation for this year s Canberra Marathon. Tony Murray ran from the back-mark to win this month s 8km running handicap in Stromlo Forest. 104 runners finished the hilly course won by Tony well ahead of Tim Chambers and Alan Anderson. Tony and Mary Ann Busteed were the quickest. 20 YEARS AGO (February 1999) Bronwyn Gardiner was appointed a manager of the Australian contingent attending the World Veterans Athletics Championships to be held in Gateshead, England later in the year. This was Bronwyn s third managerial appointment following her duties at Miyazaki, Japan in 1993 and at Buffalo, USA Four prominent senior women, Pat Mullins, Dorothy Seedsman (picture by Suzie Gaynor), Lucille Warth and Anne Young, were invited to attend a launch of the ACTIVE AUSTRALIA project by PM John Howard at Parliament. A record eleven teams, organised by Jim White, participated in this year s Sprint Marathon Relay conducted within the Deek Recreation Area in Stromlo Forest. Suzanne Counsel captained the winning team that also included John Backhaus, Denny Martin, Carol Stevenson, Jim White and Mike Worsley. Other team leaders in order of their team finish placing were Garry Hand, Stuart N Reid, Dale Chatwin, Bill Leyden, Frank Kresse, Alan Williams, John Littler, Kent Williams, Peter Kallio and Peter Clarke. Several Australian Records were set at the track; Miriam McCarthy W W 15:08.9, Margaret Taylor W50 TJ 10.40m and in the pentathlon by Kerry Boden W points, Don Fraser M , Kevin Matthews M and Margaret Taylor W points. Twenty-eight threw the shot and discus in the monthly throwing handicap won by Phil Toomey from Kathy O Brien and Tanya Colyer. The running handicap was at Dunrossil Drive. 151 ran the 8km event won by Marie Coldrick from Alan Williams and Peter Cullen. The short course attracted 73 starters and was won by Phil Toomey from Kay Thorpe and Gai Webster. February 2019 Vetrunner page 23 (For only the second time in the club s history a member won both monthly handicaps in the one weekend. Only Phil Toomey and Trish Thomas have achieved this unusual double ). 10 YEARS AGO (February 2009) Alison Ide died after a long battle with cancer. Alison was instrumental in organising our W70 relay teams that set Australian Records for the 4x100m, 4x200m, 4x400m and 4x1500m in 2006 and a World Record 4x800m in March Alison was not only a champion athlete but also an over 70 world champion tennis player. This combination of achievements was recognised by being awarded the 2007 ACT Master Sportstar of the Year. Two of our most remarkable competitors, Gwen Gleeson and John Burns, turned 80. Gwen celebrated her birthday by participating in three races on the track on one of the hottest nights of summer and established W80 ACT Records for the 100 and 200m. Apart from being a regular participant at the track Gwen also enjoyed the run/walk handicaps and had also completed eight Vets Half Marathons. By finishing the 2007 event, when more than 78 years-of-age, she became the oldest woman to have run our half. Although John is only ten days younger than Gwen he was five years behind her in joining the Vets doing so in He was also a regular participant at the track and the monthly running handicaps. Prominent champion middle distance runner John Morton announced he would soon be leaving Canberra but would remain a club member and represent us at the nationals. The 25th Sprint Marathon Relay was Jim White s tenth as event organiser. This year eight teams of six faced off on a cool Sunday morning that was threatening rain. The winning team was captained by Gary Bowen and included Carol Ey, Shane and Marta Gurney, Cathy Montalto and Margaret McSpadden. North Curtin was the venue for this month s run/walk handicap. The long course was won by Terri Jones from Katherine Sheppard and Terry Levings. Josephine Kulesz won the Frylink ahead of Michael Roche and Brian McLachlan while the Waddell walk handicap was won by Ed Towner from John Busteed and Otmar Dorfer. Geoff Herring earned his 50 handicaps T shirt. The first throwing handicap of the year, involving shot put and discus, was held on a very hot and windy afternoon. Peter Neill won the monthly trophy just in front of Colin Robbie and Mary Wahren. Bryan Thomas

26 Page 26 February 2019 Vetrunner There are many categories of records. There are records for males and records for females, with the wide variety of humans usually being shoehorned into one of those two categories. There are open records, records for juniors, and records for masters athletes, with many age categories in each of the latter two. There are records for disabled athletes, again with many sub-categories. But what about disabled masters athletes? Or the many medical conditions which are obviously an impediment to sporting performance, but for which there is no category at the Paralympics? People like to be competitive, but they also like to be fair, so competing against like individuals is the preferred model. Lots of categories of competition mean more winners. It spreads the glory. It also recognises performance by people who may not have been dealt a full hand in life. As long as there are not too many categories with an insufficient number in each. Claiming to be the fastest 49-year-old plumber from Curtin with green eyes is just weird. In a connected world it is easy for people from all over the planet with a specific range of medical conditions to get together and compare results and training methods. Some of these groups which are devoted to athletes have many thousands of members worldwide. One of the more organized groups is the cardiac athletes - people who have undergone cardiac procedures, surgical or otherwise. Some of their results, shown below, can be found at 10 km Run (6.2 mi) Males yrs For the record ACTMA Records Although it is not an event recognised by World Masters Athletics, records for the One Hour Run are kept by ACT and Australian Masters Athletics. W75 Caroline Campbell set a new ACT record on 15 November of 10,355.8 metres. Had she run this distance a bit earlier in the year, it would also have been a national record. W35 Brigid Baker has been doing it for the throwers, with a new record of metres in the shot on 8 November. Then on the 29 th of the same month she extended that to metres. Among the walkers, W55 Ann Staunton-Jugovic has started work on the records in her new age division. On 8 November she polished off 10,000 metres on the track in 59:13.0, and a week later recorded 10:49.8 for the 2000 metres. With her current form, records for other distances in the W55 class look well within her reach. W75 Val Chesterton has also added yet another record to her tally, with a 6:25.7 in the 800 metre walk. 27 February 2019 Vetrunner page 27 Jim White 300 not out Bob Banens with WMA bronze pin Jim and Maria White at the Merimbula park run for Jim s 318th run for Picture and story supplied by Jim White. Bob Banens standing with former WMA and AMA President Stan Perkins after Bob received his bronze pin for outstanding service to the world body. Picture supplied by Wilma Perkins, retiring President of AMA. In 2016 I completed 281 officially running events not on an athletics track in a calendar year which at the time was my record. In January 2018 Ricky Somerville, a running mate told me about Pub runners who run on Tuesdays at 5.45pm. This would mean I would be able to run about 30 extra events during the year. So the challenge was on to see if I could complete 300 events in That is 25 events every month; a big challenge! I would be running the Lakes Stakes, 6ks at on Tuesdays, as well as the Pub Runners, 5ks in the afternoon. Unless there was a YMCA runners club event in the Spring series. On Wednesday I would be running the BBQ stakes 6k race at 12.10pm; on Friday the Customs handicap 5ks at On Saturday I do the Park run 5ks at 8.00am and Saturday afternoon the YMVCA Runners club Winter series, usually two events. On Sundays there is the Masters monthly handicaps and usually a fun run or stair race in the morning and at 3.00pm the South Canberra Schools cross country of 2.5ks usually in winter. So how did I go; January only 23 events, Feb and March 22events, April 23; 90 events in four months; ten behind the average required. I was having a bit of trouble as I have a sciatic nerve in my right leg and in January and March I pulled a hamstring in my left leg doing sprints at Woden Athletic Field on a Thursday night. This made it very hard to run as often. I May I had a big month running 35 events and back on target. In June I ran 30 events and in July 34, August 27, September 26, October 28 events. At the end of October I had a very bad cold which made running difficult. However I still came up with 24 events in November and again in December. The last event was the Merimbula Park run on the 29th December the day after Maria and my 41st wedding anniversary (see picture above). It was Maria s second ever park run and my 278th. I had run a total of 318 events for my new world record. On top of this I ran 33 events at the Woden Athletic track for a total of 351 for the year. I would advise not to try doing this as you will get very tired and wont enjoy running...and now for the next challenge! Jim White It gives me great pleasure to submit Bob Banens name from Australia for receipt of a WMA Bronze Pin. Bob is well known for his dedication and contribution towards the WMA current constitution - a process that took around six years of drafts and rewrites to meet the requirements of an international organisation before the constitution's adoption at the WMA Championships General Assembly in Perth Bob has also been responsible for the updating of the Oceania Masters Athletics constitution and the Australian Masters Athletics Constitution. Bob has also served considerable years on the Oceania Masters Athletics Council and on the Australian Masters Athletics Board. He has also been an Australian Delegate to the WMA General Assembly over more than ten years. At the same time Bob has maintained his love of competing in athletics and has had considerable success in throwing events. Bob would be a worthy recipient of the WMA Bronze Pin for his service to masters athletics at all levels of the sport. Wilma Perkins AMA President
