Runner of the month Carol Bellamy Monday and Wednesday training have both returned to Tilgate Park, meeting by the toilet block. Supporting Brighton Marathon A number of club members, including those celebrating Debby Scotts birthday, are organising a big show of yellow down in Brighton. They intend to set up camp in the quieter areas of the course such as the turning point on the seafront. Further details to come but it would be great to support our members. If the weather is kind, it will be a lovely day. Carol has been nominated as our March runner of the month. Her regular attendance at training has been recognised, as has her continued dedication to her running. Despite a broken rib over the winter, Carol ran her first half marathon at Hampton Court this month in a very respectable 3 hours 2 mins. Congratulations Carol! Future Runner s Of The Month We would like to invite all club members to nominate a peer for future runners of the month. The committee feel it is important that our members recognise and celebrate each others achievements. Thank you to the nominations received in March. If you would like to nominate a runner, please our Chairman James on chairman@crawleysaintsandsinnersrun.co.uk by the 25 th April, naming your runner and offering an explanation for your choice. From the nominations received, the committee will choose the final winner.

Cathy s Birthday Half Marathon Sunday 17 th March was Cathy Howe s 65 th birthday. She very sadly lost her beloved husband Derek in December and as it was a special birthday, a group of us booked Hampton Court Palace half marathon to run with her and make her day special. We met at Dawn s house at 6.30 ready to travel in convoy. After storms Freya and Gareth, the previous two weekends, the morning was lovely; a crisp, bright and sunny spring morning perfect for a run! Sarah Wilson and Theresa were the most amazing cheer squad and placed themselves at mile 2 / 10. The run started off in the grounds of the Palace and exited to the left and along the tow path. We crossed the river and ran back along the other side where the S&S cheerers could still be heard!! The run continued along live roads for a few miles before running back along the tow path. The last three miles were inside the grounds running on grass which was a bit slippery and muddy!! Continued

continued Once everyone had passed the cheer squad, they encouraged and ran home with Carol Bellamy who brought the team home. Once everyone had finished and we were wearing our medals with pride, we headed back to Bushy Park where we had parked for a post run picnic. We dined with the deer, had homemade cake, prosecco and sang happy birthday! The weather was just about on our side we saw black clouds and rain coming in the far distance so did pack away a little quicker than planned and as we were in our cars exiting the carpark, down came the hailstones!! A lovely run and a well-timed picnic which hopefully mad the day memorable for Cathy! Cathy had a great run and finished in 2:16:33 and third in her age category. Well done to the birthday girl! Sarah Clapp Buddy Runs One of the lovely things about our club is how great we are at getting together to run. Whether it be to train for an event or just for company, this is a great way to get to know each other better (as well as making you get out of the house when maybe you are just not feeling motivated). If you are planning a run, and are happy for others to tag along, please do post details on the social page (where, when, distance and pace).

Hastings Half Hastings half saw the 1st of our Sussex grand prix league races and what an event it was. Last year we had snow but this year was the absolute opposite with sunshine and warmth. Hastings half is well known for its hills but you get them out of the way after the 1st half and then you re rewarded with a great downhill section and a 2 mile flat along the seafront which clearly helped with pacing for most of our S&S team. We had a 7th place finisher, lots of course PB s, some that were just grateful to finish due to getting over an illness and/or injury or lack of sleep and training but best of all the atmosphere, support and the sense of being part of an amazing team was apparent. Good luck to Rob Kernaghan on his new venture to Cornwall as this may be his last club race for us although we may have twisted his arm to come back from time to time to run more races. Continued

continued So that just leaves me to thank Steve Baker, Ian Blackham, Jo Fiveash, Mary Freestone, Janine Haynes, Rob Kernaghan, Chris Lobs, Matt Prescott, Jim Scott and Ken Tulley because without you all the SGP wouldn t exist. Our next event is Hastings 5 which unfortunately clashes with our WSFRL race The Hedgehoppers 5 and the Gatwick half so I realise it may not be a priority event, but on the 26th May we do have the Rye 10 which is a lovely low key event and definitely one for the bucket list. Please see below links to the next 2 races and I can t express enough that you don t have to be competitive or fast as these are always great team events whatever your reason for running is. 12th May: 26th May: Cara Farewell to Rob We would like to wish Rob Kernagham farewell as he moves to Cornwall this week. Rob has completed many many runs as a Saint and will be missed at events. We hope he will join us for local runs when he visits Sussex. The committee will be organising a little something for him, from the club. Good luck, keep in touch and keep running!

Parkrun news Tourism March 23 rd saw the tour bus rock up at East Brighton Parkrun. This is a relative newcomer to the Parkrun scene and the day of our visit was event number 16. As with all our tours, everyone was very welcoming and our participation took the numbers up over 100. This is a 3 lap course of a park and a football pitch. Each lap takes a slightly different route, with the first lap having a slightly surprising start! Its all run on grass and while mostly flat, there are some ups and downs. The football pitch also doubles as a helicopter landing pad so the pre-run briefing warns about unexpected interruptions of the aerial kind. Next stop, Cranleigh. Clare Nina s 250 th run What a beautiful day it was to celebrate Nina s special achievement on Saturday. There was a huge sea of yellow and a variety of beautiful bunches on display. What incredible support from our club. Please continue to credit the club by wearing yellow at parkrun, especially when we are celebrating! Yellow tutu s Over the last few months we have come together to acknowledge and celebrate our yellow parkrun achievements. We celebrate first timers, old timers, baldies and bunches and now I ask that you find your tutus and pom poms to celebrate Abby s 300 th parkrun on 6 th April. What an achievement for our four legged member.

Its that time of year again Saints! Membership An annual membership (April 1st to March 31st) to the club costs 10 a year per individual. As a club member all WSFRL races cost just 3 for adults and 1 for juniors ( 5 and 1 on-the-day). There is also the option to pay a yearly fee of 15 to become UK Athletics affiliated (UKA), as an affiliated member you get your own unique runner number which entitles you to affiliated race discount on all non-wsfrl races, this option really benefits those who race all year round saving on average 2 on normal race entry fees, members also get a UKA membership pack and discount at Sweatshop. Membership forms available from the SAS website. Please complete and then print or the form to our membership secretary, the lovely Lesley on: membership@crawleysaintsandsinnersrun.co.uk or pass to a run leader or coach at training. Where possible please avoid using cash and make bank transfers to: Saints and Sinners, sort code and account number Please add your surname + MEM as the reference for membership. Please complete and return sooner rather than later Lesley Track sessions These are now booked until the end of August on the following dates April 26 th May 31 st June 28 th July 26 th August 30 th Please get these dates in your diary. These are fantastic sessions and a bargain at 1. Non members also welcome ( 3) and a great way to introduce friends to the S&S family.

Volunteering with SAS Volunteers Wanted! Each year SAS have managed a water station or road crossing on the South Downs half/full marathon. Due to splits in the route there are lots of volunteers required and such events can only survive with the help of volunteers. WHERE - Beggers Bush South Downs near Lancing (With Great Views) WHEN - Sunday 5th May. TIME - 10am to 11am. Beggers Bush is about 5 miles into the race so once the runners are through you are free to enjoy the rest of the day. Please contact Peter if you are interested. Thank you. Peter Airey- peterairey52@gmail.com or text The organisers of Three Forts would like to extend thanks to those all ready committed to volunteering, however, they have now offered a further incentive! Anyone who can volunteer this year will receive 50% off entry next year! There are a number of additional roles available. Learn to run We would like to see some Saints nominate themselves to support with the future Learn to Run course, which we will be running in May You can volunteer to support on individual dates, weekly or for the full course. Please support the club. Please share with friends, family and the community. Info can be received via the Chairman, details to follow. London 2020 Please note that eligibility to be entered into the draw for a free London Marathon place in 2020 is subject to evidence of volunteering during the year. What better opportunity than these two?

Our (not so) New Run Leaders! This month we meet Matt Race dates 6 th April Sussex Road Relay 7 th April Lancing 10k & Hartfield 10km 14 th April Brighton Marathon/10km I was thinking about putting myself forward to be a run leader for a while. I will have been a Saint for two years next month so felt like I should give something back to the club, I also wanted to try and offer different sessions and paces. My favourite sessions involve trail runs and exploring (and occasionally getting lost) on new routes. With my sporadic shift patterns and the arrival of Fraser, I haven t been to club as much as I would have wanted this winter but I will be back regularly training in the next few weeks. I hope members will join me for trails at around 9 minute miles. I hope to do a half iron man this year and improve my (lost) fitness. 22 nd April WSFRL Lewes 28 th April Angmering Bluebell 10k/10m London Marathon 4 th, 5 th & 6 th May- Mid Sussex Marathon 5 th May Three Forts Challenge 12 th May Hastings 5mile SGP & Sussex Half Marathon Champs (Gatwick) & Portslade WSFRL 19 th May Awards afternoon 26 May Rye 10 SGP 2 nd June Borde Hill Garden 10km, Worthing 10km & Horsham 10km 7 th July Bewl 15miles 17 th July Wakehurst Willow 20 th July SAS Summer Do Please share races you are signing up to in advance so others can join you.
