2 WELCOME TO KNYSNA Following the devastating fires which started on 7 June, Knysna Tourism launched its #KnysnaRises logo, showing a Knysna Loerie rising like a phoenix from the flames. The logo was aimed at addressing the perception that Knysna was destroyed by the fires, when in fact most tourism activities and attractions were not affected and are still operational. Knysna s scenic beauty is still intact and the Knysna experience is still unique. 1

5 maserati big5 challenge 2017 AN OUT OF THE ORDINARY EXPERIENCE A warm welcome to all participants of the Maserati BIG5 Challenge to this year s Pick n Pay Knysna Oyster Festival! Already a highlight on the annual calendar, this year promises to be out of the ordinary: The Maserati BIG5 Challenge will push all participants to reach their personal limits while participating in five awe-inspiring and thrilling adventure-fuelled events. In the same breath that we celebrate the spirit of this year s Maserati BIG5 Challenge, we must also acknowledge the recent devastation that has ravaged the Knysna area. A big thank you to everyone who is making an invaluable contribution to rebuild the area following the fires. Maserati s sponsorship of the BIG5 Challenge allows us to meaningfully contribute to these efforts. 6 REGISTRATION Maserati BIG5 Challenge athletes only need to register once for all 5 sub-events. Registration for this year s Maserati BIG5 Challenge will take place on Friday 7th July from 13:00 20:00 at the Maserati BIG5 Challenge Hospitality Zone on the Pick n Pay Knysna Oyster Festival grounds. RACE BRIEFING Maserati BIG5 Challenge Race Briefing will take place on Friday, 7th July at 18:00 in the Maserati BIG5 Challenge Hospitality Zone. Please note: All athletes are responsible for attending each sub-event's race briefing. Please familiarise yourself with the times and locations communicated by them. 7 ATHLETE HOSPITALITY All Maserati BIG5 Challenge athletes have access to the Maserati BIG5 Hospitality Zone situated on the Pick n Pay Knysna Oyster Festival Grounds. Guest passes will allow you to bring an extra adult and two children into the hospitality area on event days. There will be limited snacks and drinks on offer along with post-race massages courtesy of EPT Recovery and Deep Heat. Please note that massages are reserved for athletes only. 10 ATHLETE SERVICES POST-RACE MASSAGES EPT Recovery, in conjunction with Deep Heat, will be providing all Maserati BIG5 Challenge athletes a complimentary sports massage service. Highly trained therapists will maximise your recovery and ensure you are race-ready for the next leg of your challenge. The massage tent will be situated within the Maserati BIG5 Challenge Hospitality Zone area and will work on a first-come-first-serve basis. In addition, a public massage service will also be available by appointment and can take place in the comfort of your accommodation or within the Pick n Pay Knysna Festival Grounds. Scheduled treatments will be for your own account and can be booked online here slots.php?abs=1&ev=116&ml=1&iframe=1 BIKE PARK Squirt Lube will be offering all Maserati BIG5 Challenge athletes an exclusive, secure bike park to store bikes on event days, should they so choose. Due to limited space allocation work on a firstcome-first-serve basis. Security will oversee the bike park during operating hours of the festival grounds but no bikes are to be left in the bike park outside these times, especially overnight. Please note that bikes left in this bike park are left their at owners risk. 9

11 RULES AND REGULATIONS The Maserati BIG5 competition will be scored on the athlete s cumulative finish time from each event. The Maserati BIG5Lite and BIG5Jnr competitions will be scored on a points system relating to the athletes finishing position within each event. Visit big5sportchallenge.com for more info. Note: Results will be posted after each event on the Results board within the Maserati BIG5 Challenge Hospitality Zone at the Knysna Oyster Festival Grounds. WETSUITS Please note that the water is C this time of year and could be as low as 9 C so wetsuits are compulsory for the Maserati BIG5Jnr 400m swim and are highly recommended for the Lagoon Mile Swim in the Maserati BIG5 and Maserati BIG5Lite. FINISHERS MEDALS Finishers Medals will only be awarded to those competitors who have successfully completed all 5 events within their selected challenge. PODIUM PRIZES To be in contention for any prizes, athletes need to successfully complete all events within their challenge to that point. 10

12 PRIZE CATEGORIES The Maserati BIG5 Challenge will for the first time see and introduction of Age Categories to allow for more competition. Podium positions of the following Age Categories will be called out after each event at their respective prize giving ceremonies with a final call up to the podium at the Finale Prize-giving on Saturday 15th July (Open) (Masters) 50+ (Grand Masters) (Open) 40+ (Veterans) (years) (years) INCOMPLETE RACES If a Maserati BIG5 Challenge Athlete misses an event or does not complete one or more of the official events: They will no longer qualify for the Maserati BIG5 Challenge Competition. They may participate in the remaining events as an individual. They will continue to receive the Maserati BIG5 Challenge Athlete benefits. They may take podium at any event but will not be recognised as podium finisher within the Maserati BIG5 Challenge Competition. 11

13 RESULTS AND DISPUTES Please note that the Partner Events are staged and officiated by each of our Partner Event organisers and associated federations. The Maserati BIG5 Challenge Results are taken from each Partner Event s results, therefore any athlete dispute with regards to their results or position need to be lodged directly with the respective event organisers.
