2 2008 TRACK & FIELD MEN S OUTLOOK Most movie sequels fail to live up to their predecessors, but Liberty head track & field coach Brant Tolsma believes his 2008 men s team has a blockbuster of a sequel in store. The 2007 Flames enjoyed a banner season, sweeping the Big South indoor and outdoor titles, capturing the IC4A outdoor championship for the second time in school history and recording their highest finish (T-22nd) at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships. Individually, Josh McDougal and Brandon Hoskins both added to their All-America count. Despite the success of last year s team, Tolsma noted, We have the potential to field the best team we ve ever had, at the conference, regional and national level. We have a lot of outstanding upperclassmen and there s plenty of excitement with it being an Olympic year. One of four Liberty seniors who made the trip to Sacramento for the 2007 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships a season ago, Josh McDougal is training with his eye on the Beijing Olympics. The 12-time All- American captured his first national title in November, winning the NCAA National Cross Country Championships individual crown. Now, he aims to conclude his collegiate track career with a bang. Hoskins, himself a two-time All- American, placed seventh in the decathlon at last season s NCAA outdoor meet. The senior is the third-leading returner to the collegiate ranks, making him a strong national contender. Senior throwers Jon Hart and Clendon Henderson also look to build upon exceptional results from the 2007 campaign. The duo became the first Liberty throwers ever to compete at the national level, as Hart competed in the hammer and Henderson ended up 10th in the discus. Both are potential national scorers this year. While the senior quartet headlines the 2008 Liberty men s track & field team, more than 50 athletes appear on the Flames roster. The team is large and loaded, according to Tolsma, and is poised for an unprecedented year of success. Phil Leineweber at the 2007 Big South Outdoor Championships Sprints Although Liberty is experienced in most disciplines, the sprints are an exception. The team will rely greatly on freshmen and transfers this season, especially in the shortest events. In the 100 and 200, the Flames will look for immediate contributions from true freshman Jacey Bailey and sophomore transfer Durell Cull. Tolsma also hopes football players Dominic Bolden and Donald Manns will aid in the sprinting events. Other athletes who are possibilities in the short sprints or the 4 x 100 relay include Hoskins, junior decathlete Daniel Newell and juniors Phil Leineweber and Oronde Vassell. Leineweber (47.59 personal best) and Hoskins (47.74 personal best) are the only two current Flames who have dipped under 48 seconds in the 400. Leineweber placed fourth in the event at last season s Big South outdoor meet. Help will be provided in the form of freshman Cleveland Edwards, who broke 50 seconds in high school. Other possible open or 4 x 400 relay entrants include Newell and junior Matt Parker. Mid-distance The Flames are a bit sparse at the 800-meter distance, where Leineweber is the top returnee. He clocked 1:54.20 for an indoor 800 last season. Things look better at 1,500 meters, as the Flames deep and talented corps of distance runners can contribute. Josh and Jordan McDougal went 1-2 in the Big South 1,500 a year ago, for example. Josh McDougal also joined the sub-4:00 mile club, clocking a 3:57.46, and claimed the IC4A 1,500- meter title. Liberty figures to score a lot of points in the distance events this season, with a stable of talented runners which includes the McDougal brothers, junior Jarvis Jelen, sophomore Josh Edmonds and transfer Evans Kigen. Josh McDougal has excelled at both the 5,000 and 10,000-meter distances throughout his career. Last season, he posted a 5,000-meter clocking of 13:20.43, which made him the No. 5 all-time collegiate performer in the event. He also placed third in the 10,000 meters at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships, equaling his highest-ever finish in a track event at the national meet. McDougal, who possesses an Olympic A qualifier for the 5,000 meters, plans to limit his races during the indoor and outdoor seasons, as he prepares for the Olympic Trials in late June/early July. Jelen has battled injury for much of his collegiate track career. He hopes to stay healthy this season and translate the ability he has displayed in cross country into fast times on the oval. He placed 20th at the NCAA Southeast Regional Cross Country Championships this past season. Edmonds was named the Big South Freshman of the Year for indoor track in 2007, after finishing as the con- MEDIA GUIDE 25

3 MEN S OUTLOOK 2008 TRACK & FIELD TRACK & FIELD ference runner-up at 5,000 meters. He also gained valuable experience by traveling with the U.S. junior cross country team to Kenya for the 2007 World Junior Cross Country Championships. Liberty plans to put more emphasis on the steeplechase than it has in recent years. Jordan McDougal, Kigen and Cory Reed will all take aim at the school record of 8: McDougal, the record holder at 5,000 meters at the Big South indoor meet, owns an outdoor 5K personal best of 14: Kigen comes to Liberty from New York Institute of Technology, where he placed eighth at the 2007 NCAA Division II Cross Country Championships. Reed, a freshman, ran 9:21 for the steeplechase in high school. Hurdles Liberty features three hurdlers Hoskins, Parker and senior Tim O Donnell, who have all broken 8.60 in the 60-meter hurdles, giving the Flames good potential in the sprint hurdles. Parker and O Donnell finished second and third, respectively, in the 110-meter hurdles at the Big South outdoor meet. The Flames other multi-event athletes, including Newell and freshman Geren Woodbridge, will add depth. The 400-meter hurdles is a bit of an unknown at this point, as O Donnell, the 2007 Big South champion in the event, will likely redshirt outdoors. In his absence, decathletes may be the team s best option. Hoskins has run and won the Big South 400- meter hurdle crown as a freshman in Throws As previously mentioned, the Flames had a strong year in the throwing events last season, sending two men to the national meet. Tolsma believes they should be even better this year, even with promising sophomore Elliot Galeone likely taking a redshirt. In the shot put, the team packs a strong 1-2 punch in Henderson and Hart. Henderson owns the Big South indoor record in the event, while Hart set the conference outdoor mark last season. They swept the top two places at the Big South indoor and outdoor championships and both competed at the NCAA East Regional Championships. Junior Andrew Bartels has also made significant improvements during the off-season and appears ready to demolish his personal best of 46-9 this season. Henderson is the team s featured discus thrower, after unleashing a toss last season and placing 10th nationally. A strong candidate to score at the national meet and qualify for the Olympic Trials, Henderson will be backed up by Hart and Hoskins. Decathletes will serve as the team s top options in the javelin this season. The group is led by Hoskins, who placed fourth at the Big South Outdoor Track & Field Championships a season ago and has the potential to exceed 200 feet. Hart s specialty is the hammer throw, which he hurled a season ago. He will seek a high national finish and a trip to the Olympic Trials. Henderson could also reach 200 feet, after topping out at in Senior Steve Barrett and Bartels add depth, as both are potential Big South scorers. Jumps Liberty has a rich tradition in the pole vault, and the Flames are currently rebuilding a deep and talented vaulting crew. Freshman Kolby Shepherd and Hoskins both look to clear 16 feet, and Newell, Justin Savini and Matt Savini also show promise. Hoskins, Newell, Justin Savini and Matt Savini went at the 2007 Big South Outdoor Track & Field Championships. Another freshman, Clarence Powell, hopes to help fuel a resurgence in the other jumping events. He aims to sail past 50 feet in the triple jump early in the outdoor season, a feat only one Liberty athlete has ever accomplished. Manns hopes to jump past 46 feet as well. In the long jump, Liberty should hold its own at the conference level. Powell is relatively inexperienced in the event, but has the potential to experience rapid improvement. Hoskins and Parker both have 23-foot marks to their credit in the past. The high jump could be the Flames most exciting jumping event, though, as both Parker and Powell could realistically clear 7-0. Parker nearly made his first national appearance last season, advancing to a jumpoff for the final qualifying spot at the NCAA East Regional Championships. He jumped a career-best 6-11 to place fifth at the meet and earn All-East Region distinction. Decathlon The Flames track & field program has enjoyed a long string of successes in the decathlon, ever since Henry Elliott became the team s first Division I All-American in the event in Seven Liberty athletes, including Hoskins, have earned All-American honors in the decathlon, and a sizable contingent of current Flames multievent athletes looks to carry on the tradition. Hoskins is a two-time All-American, placing ninth in the heptathlon at the 2005 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships and seventh in the decathlon at last year s NCAA Outdoor Championships. He has battled injuries throughout his career, but is one of the nation s elite decathletes when healthy. Newell placed third in the decathlon at the IC4A Championships last season, scoring a personal-best 6,774 points. He will seek his first trip to the national meet in Clarence Murray, a senior, is the only man ever to win the Big South heptathlon title. He has placed first in the event both times it has been contested and additionally captured the 2006 conference decathlon crown. Freshman Woodbridge is just learning the decathlon, but Tolsma and his staff believe he possesses considerable potential for the future. Matt Tarr, a junior, finished fifth in the 2007 Big South decathlon. 26
