Welcome BISHOP FOLEY CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL TRACK & FIELD HANDBOOK We are very excited to welcome you to the 2018 Bishop Foley Catholic Track & Field team! This handbook is your introduction to an amazing sport that spotlights individual performances that are essential to the ultimate success of the team. Life beyond school and sports can be much like that; an organization s success is built on the foundation of people who see that working to reach their potential through their best effort brings them success and positively impacts the work of everyone else. We will help you think about and set goals for yourself that challenge you to live up to the athletic ability God has given you. You will find making progress toward and accomplishing the goals you set to be very satisfying. The success of our 2018 Bishop Foley Track & Field team depends on you! 1

Vision The young men and women who participate in Bishop Foley Cross Country or Track & Field will engage in a challenging physical development program to help them build their character and reach their athletic potential, so they will be able to compete and excel at their highest levels in our league, regional, and state meets. Mission 1) We will ask you to commit to working to realize your potential, and to learn how your character, emotional maturity and physical maturity all impact your personal and athletic development. 2) We will take a developmental approach to your athletic performance, recognizing differences in growth, maturity, fitness and experience. We expect that in 4 years everyone who is committed to this process will make significant progress towards realizing their potential. 3) We will measure you to establish starting points, track physical changes and growth, recognize competitive milestones and help you keep your training records that are consistent with those measurements. 4) We will help you to learn the skills and techniques that allow you to improve your performance. 5) We will ask and help you to set goals that are consistent with where you may find yourself in the development process. 6) We will ask you to make a commitment to the team and to team goals that may require an adjustment to your individual goals. We recognize also that faith, family, education and employment responsibilities may sometimes impact your ability to meet team commitments. 7) You will make great friends and have great experiences, while sharing life lessons with your teammates that will help you learn how to make the most of your future opportunities. Team Values & Expectations: Give your best effort each day Do what is best for the team. Sometimes this means competing in events you wouldn t normally do to help score the team more points! Be coachable Set a positive example for others to follow by demonstrating sportsmanship and showing respect for teammates, opponents, coaches, & officials Be accountable for your actions Team Goals: 1. Provide athletes with a challenging physical/mental training regiment that will help them develop & reach their full potentials 2. Positively grow as a students, athletes, teammates, and spiritual leaders 3. Earn a catholic league championship for both boys and girls teams 4. Qualify athletes for the state track and field championship meet 3
Training Philosophy: Training methods utilized throughout the season will be designed to prepare athletes for maximum performance at the championship meets. This means that workouts will vary throughout the season according to the specific training phase. Athlete ability, skill level, & progress will also be considered. The training phases are shown below and will be applied across all event groups. 1. Fitness Development (March- April) - emphasis will be on building aerobic/anaerobic fitness levels, learning proper techniques specific to event, & gaining a level of comfort with daily training routines. Workouts will involve more repetitions compared to later phases. 2. Peak (First 2 weeks of May) - emphasis will be on applying techniques learned from phase 1 with quality. Strategies & mental preparedness for championship meets will be key. Reps will decrease in quantity, but will be more intensive. By this point in the season, the goal will be to have each athlete performing consistently at their top potentials. The hardest work of the season will be done by the end of this phase 3. Taper (Last 2 weeks of May-1st week of June)- emphasis will continue to be on mental preparedness for championship competition. Reps will again decrease in quantity & focus on quality. One could think of this phase as fine tuning an already well built machine. Practice Monday-Friday 3:30-5:30 PM (runners, jumpers, hurdlers) 4:30-5:30 PM (throwers) Note: practices will not be held over the easter and memorial holiday breaks. However, athletes are still expected to stay in condition during these times. ATTENDANCE POLICY: Attendance at all practices/meets is mandatory. If an athlete is going to miss a practice or meet for any reason, it should be communicated via to the coaching staff at least 24 hours in advance. Poor attendance or failure to communicate will result in suspension from team events and/or dismissal from the team. Practices will begin precisely at the scheduled time. Athletes should be dressed and ready to begin their warmup by this time. Showing up late to practice or a competition will result in disciplinary action determined by the coaching staff. If at anytime an athlete s tardiness is unavoidable due to a conflict, the athlete should communicate via to the coach at least 24 hours in advance. BEING RELEASED (CUT) FROM THE TEAM: There is no formal cutting policy in the track and field program. No athlete is cut from the team based on his or her natural talent or current skill level. However, athletes are expected to be committed to the team through both their attendance, enthusiasm, and effort. They should attend practice every day, adhere to workout plans, and participate in meets. There are three reasons for potentially being dismissed from the team: (1) disciplinary problem, (2) poor attendance, (3) major team violation. Varsity Letter Requirements: To earn a varsity letter, an athlete must run in a minimum of 4 varsity competitions, or score a minimum of 5 points in a varsity event. Coach s may also choose to award letters based on individual contributions to team. 4
Michigan Order of Events: It is extremely important that athletes learn the order of events shown below. Coaches have to be in many places during a track meet and may not always be available if athletes are unsure when their event is. Therefore, they should enter the season with a knowledge of the events & seek out a coach early with questions. It is the athletes responsibility to listen to official announcements & check-in to his/her events on time! *Boys run first in 2018* Running Events: (Prelims - if conducted ) Boys 110 meter High Hurdles Girls 100 meter High Hurdles 100 meter Dash (Finals) 4 x 800 meter Relay Boys 110 meter High Hurdles Girls 100 meter High Hurdles 100 meter Dash 4 x 200 meter Relay 1600 meter Run 4 x 100 meter Relay 400 meter Dash Boys 300 meter I. H. Girls 300 meter I. M. 800 meter Run 200 meter Dash 3200 meter Run 4 x 400 meter Relay *Prelims will only be ran at the CHSL, Regional, & State championship meets as well as larger invitational-style meets* Field events: Discus Shot Put Long Jump High Jump *Field events are generally contested before the start of running finals, but may sometimes be conducted at the same time as running events at bigger meets. Athletes must always remember to check in/out with event officials if they have to leave a field event for a running event. 5
How A Track and Field Meet Is Scored: Athletes score points for their team by placing in each event (first place receiving the most points, and so on). The depth of scoring (how many athletes score in each event) varies. Meets with more teams typically have more depth. The most common depths for scoring are three, six, and eight. Respectively, this means that the top three, six, or eight athletes will be given points in each event. In championship meets, relay events are typically scored in this manner. It s common in dual meets, though, to only award points to the first-place relay team. Invitational Scoring Below is an example of how points would be awarded if the depth of scoring was eight : First place: Ten points Second place: Eight points Third place: Six points Fourth place: Five points Fifth place: Four points Sixth place: Three points Seventh place: Two points Eighth place: One point *Relay scoring follows the same format Dual Scoring Below is an example of how points would be awarded if the depth of scoring was three : First place: Five points Second place: Three points Third place: One point *Relay scoring - First place: Five points Tri-meet Scoring Below is an example of how points would be awarded if the depth of scoring was four : First place: Five points Second place: Three points Third place: Two points Fourth place: One points *Relay scoring - First place: Five points Second place: Three points 6
2018 CHSL Qualifying Standards: In order to compete at the CHSL championship meet, athletes must be one of the top 2 team performers in their event(s) or have met the qualifying standards. See page 9 of the link below. CHSL C/D Qualifying Standards Regional and state qualifying standards will be released at a later date by the MHSAA 7
