AMERICA S BOATING COURSE ABC covers the basics needed to operate a boat safely including rules of the road, required equipment, personal watercraft operation and boat handling techniques Meets NASBLA and MA Certification requirements for power boat operation by 12 to 15 year olds. ABC is the United States Power Squadron s premier program in public instruction instructing the fundamentals of safe boating. The One-Day Course open for all ages but designed for Young Boaters, ages 12 to 15 years: Upon successful completion of the Course, applications for the MA Operator s Certificate forwarded to the State for processing. Karush Treasurer Karen McCully Hong (H) (C) karen3hong@yahoo.com Ass t Treasurer Werner Diekmann, JN wadiekmann@gmail.com View from the Bridge Summer is finally in full swing with the local harbors filling with boats, the beaches at Basset s Island and Waquoit Bay showing signs of life and the real tell-tale sign of summer, the fish are back running the canal. This is what we have all been waiting for! The past two months have also been busy for the squadron as we have run two ABC classes with a third one scheduled for Saturday, July 7 th at the Falmouth Public Library. The turnout at the classes has been good and has resulted in some new members. The Squadron, under the leadership of Dick Moore and Bob Sweet recently ran our annual Powerboat On-the-Water Training program at Parker s Boatyard on June 15 th and 16 th. This year was perhaps our most successful with the program as we filled the program with twelve (12) students, the maximum possible for our instructors. Each student attended a three-hour seminar followed the next day by two five-hour sessions of on the water training with students operating the boats while being coached by the instructors. Learning how to operate a boat, docking, line handling, slow speed maneuvers and open water training are just some of the exercises the students perform. The squadron is planning on offering a second Powerboat On-the-Water Training program on August 24 th and 25 th. Details to follow. As mentioned, we have one more ABC class scheduled for July 7 th. Although open to all age groups, this session focuses on the younger boaters, ages 12 to 15 that are in need of their Massachusetts Powerboat Operator s Certificate. There are still a few spots open so if your child or grandchild is in need of the Operator s Certificate, please contact Dick Moore as soon as possible as there are some pre-reading assignments. Another sign of summer is the running of the Annual Newport-Bermuda Race. This year s race had a fleet of 169 boats at the start of the 635 mile race. Entrees ranged from the new high tech racing boats, to the luxurious Super yachts to the everyday club racing boats. The smallest boat in the fleet was a 32.5 Morris sloop that finished 2 nd in their class followed by a 35 Yankee Morris sloop from Sail Martha s Vineyard that won the double handed class. We all think that to compete in a prestigious offshore race, the boat must be a racing machine or a newer boat with all the latest technology. Not so! This year, a 1968, 50 Columbia sloop sailed and took line honors and 1 st in Class 4. Purchased 50 years ago when the Columbia was then the state of the art boat, it raced its first Newport Bermuda Race in 1972 and is still racing. What a legacy for a production boat and best of all, the crew included the owner, his daughter and two sons. It just goes to show that a well designed, well constructed and well sailed boat can compete. By the way, the Newport Bermuda race has seen all kinds of weather conditions over the years but this year, the race was categorized as a slow but strategically challenging race. Boats finished the 635 mile course anywhere from 2 and 6 days due to light to non-existent winds in the middle of the course. Navigators that correctly identified the effect of the eddies in the Gulf Stream and the wind shifts had the strategic advantage with their course adjustments. 6 AIS and Virtual Navigation The Automatic Identification System, better known as AIS, allows ships to identify each other while underway by continuously sharing their location, speed and course electronically with other AIS equipped ships. Introduced in 2002, AIS provides ships with another set of eyes and ears while on the water and in 2018 AIS is now able to share information on virtual and synthetic navigational aids designed to make our waterways safer. What does all this mean? Today you may find yourself navigating local waters by GPS and suddenly you see an AIS target on your chartplotter screen with information pertaining to a navigational aid but, the navigational aid is nowhere to be seen. Is it really there and if so, can it help you navigate safely? Today the answer is yes, as the Coast Guard is using AIS technology to identify both actual and virtual aids of navigation and transmit the characteristics and coordinates of each to electronic charts and other navigational displays including your AIS equipped chartplotter. This technology is fully operational throughout the United States except in the Great Lakes. Yes, the age of virtual navigation is upon us and it is working! The AIS capability to transmit information on Aids to Navigation fall into three categories; Synthetic, Real and Virtual with each having different uses and applications. The Synthetic aid is a physical buoy or marker that transmits only its exact position every three minutes to a shore station who, in turn, will broadcast a signal with the buoy s MMSI number, similar to your VHF MMSI, to the ship when it may be viewed on the chartplotter. From the helm, you will see the real buoy bobbing in the water at the indicated position even though the buoy is not equipped with AIS. The Real or actual aid to navigation will be equipped with AIS technology capable of transmitting its own signals. For example, a buoy will have a GPS chip and AIS transmitter installed along with its own power supply capable of broadcasting all the buoy characteristics and location. This real time navigational data can then be displayed on your AIS equipped chartplotter and integrated radar. The Virtual aid allows the Coast Guard to broadcast a signal from a base station to a virtual spot where there is no physical aid to navigation. This virtual spot" can only be seen with an AIS equipped chartplotter or integrated radar. The advantage of the virtual aids is that they allow the Coast Guard to deploy navigational markers on a temporary basis or in emergencies, for example in cases of shoaling or with a sunken vessel. In fact, the Coast Guard used virtual aids to designate security zones to control spectator fleets during the recent America s Cup series in San Francisco and virtual aids were also deployed last winter on the east coast to mark shipping channels when traditional navigational aids were dragged off station by heavy ice flows. Virtual navigation is a reality and unbeknownst to some recreational boaters, they are now using the new technology when viewing AIS data on their chart-plotters and integrated radar units. There has been little fanfare about the new technology but the virtual information is helping boaters better identify navigational aids and better navigate safe passages. As technology advances, boaters now have more advanced information to ensure our safety and the safety of others. Navigational equipment is also advancing quickly as we are now seeing VHF radios integrated with AIS receiving technology and it is likely that future GPS units will soon automatically include AIS capabilities. *Reference: Boat U.S. Website 6

7 EDUCATIONAL REPORT During the months of May and June, BBSPS offered the ABC course at the Bourne and Falmouth libraries. Congratulations go to: Mia Cavossa Liam Cogavin We are offering one final ABC class, primarily aimed at the year old students, at the Falmouth Library on Saturday, July 7 th. There are still openings in this class and we welcome all who need the ABC course before this summer season. Membership BBSPS welcomes five (5) new members to our squadron. Kathryn and James Shaw have recently moved to Pocasset and have transferred their membership to Buzzards Bay from the Cape Cod Squadron. Daniel and Selina Kelly from Bournedale and Jack Hostetter from Falmouth joined the squadron for the On-The-Water training session in June. Please join me in welcoming all the new members!
