I just returned from our District 16 Conference loaded down with awards and certificates and even money! We completed the D16 Marketing Challenge and received a check for $715 to go toward our On-the-Water Training. We accomplished this by recruiting new members in innovative ways Our sandwich sign at the Port of Friday Harbor, our On-the-Water Training classes and our Facebook page. Teaching On Boats - On-the- Water Training also gained us another grant of $1,000 from the Northwest Marine Trade Association to conduct more of these classes. So, any of you who are interested in perfecting your boat handling skills, please let me know. We have a class scheduled for April 16, 22 & 23, and can schedule another one later in the year. These are free to members, so please take advantage of this opportunity. Another way of practicing boat handling without any chance of hitting anything is playing with our Boat Simulator. We will have the Boat Simulator/Virtual Trainer at our May 3 picnic, so don t miss out. I will also have it available on May 4 & 5, from HARBOR LIGHTS 10 AM-4 PM at the Port of Friday Harbor in the Port meeting room, under the Yacht Club. This is open to the public, so tell your friends. Then to put all these boating skills to use, we have several cruises coming up that are going to be great fun: The Rendezvous with the Bellingham Sail & Power Squadron, Bellingham Yacht Club and San Juan Island Yacht Club from April is going to be our best ever. Our 32 nd Annual Pig War Rendezvous with our Canadian friends, the Brentwood Bay Sail & Power Squadron, is July 6-8 at Telegraph Harbour on Thetis Island and will be a Not-to-Be- Missed event. Thanks to Mike Nachlinger, we will have an all newly designed Pig War Trophy and, hopefully, will be able to retain it. Boats must reserve their dock space at Telegraph Harbour by June 1. Call Next, is a joint cruise with the Friday Harbor Sailing Club and the San Juan Island Yacht Club to Port Browning on July 27-29, and an extended joint cruise with the San Juan Island Yacht Club on August 17-Sept. 5 going to Vancouver, up through Desolation Sound and on to the Broughton Archipelago. This is going to be a fabulous opportunity to stretch out beyond our Gulf Islands to some incredibly beautiful areas. I will be presenting a seminar: Extended Cruising and Provisioning on May 24 at the Yacht Club, so please come. We have a terrific season ahead of us and as I reminded you at the Change of Watch: God only gave us so many days on this earth, but the days spent on the water don t count against your quota.
Harbor Lights Page 2 SEO Report SEO Mike Clark, JN-IN What I know about cruising has been learned almost exclusively from two sources; good books, and a tremendous number of mistakes. Of these two possibilities, I can heartily recommend learning from books, especially if it means avoiding some of the mistakes. Loren R. Borland The winter/spring have been busy for the FHPS education group with various courses, seminars and On-the-Water Training (OTW) offerings. We have completed an ABC3 Class and an Advanced Piloting Class. The Piloting class is underway and scheduled for completion on Wednesday, April 25. The seminars scheduled for the spring are listed below. Our seminars, which started in February 2018, are held at the San Juan Island Yacht Club. I have had to move the April seminar to May to accommodate the classroom portion of OTW. The OTW classroom portion is scheduled for Monday, April 16, 2018 from hrs at Skagit Valley College. The schedule for spring is as follows: Advanced Classes Wednesdays hrs Partner in Command September 17, 2018 On-the-Water Training Monday, April hrs Classroom Instruction Skagit Valley College Sunday and Monday April 22 & hrs On-the-Water Training Roche Harbor Weather Permitting Completion of Piloting April 25 Virtual trainer will be here on May 3, 4 & 5 Paddle Smart Seminar May 21 Piloting March 7, 2018 Skagit Valley College in Room C for 5 weeks. Come take a class! Seminars Mondays hrs San Juan Island Yacht Club Paddle Smart May 21, 2018 Seminar on September 17, 2018
Harbor Lights Page 3 On-the-Water Training Want Some On-the-Water Training? One of the most popular of our activities is the opportunity to get in a boat and actually practice the skills we talk about in class. As members of the Friday Harbor Power Squadron, you are eligible for free On-the-Water Training. Our auction we had last December and our success with the Marketing Grant, make it possible to rent a boat for a couple of days, so we are scheduling the training. This involves 2-3 hours of classroom preparation, going over all of the skills and safety precautions and then at least 2 hours in the boat on the water with a trained instructor. Skills: Docking, undocking with spring lines, boat handling underway, running a slalom course, anchoring, mooring, holding in place, man overboard recovery, quick stop, understanding navigation aids and much more. Classroom Preparation: Monday, April 16-6:30-8:30 PM On-the-Water Training: Sunday & Monday, April 22 & 23 9 AM 5 PM Sign Up: your name(s) and preferred day of training to Ann at ein@rockisland.com to get on the list.
Harbor Lights Page 4 Administrative Officer Report Teddy Gosinsky, AP and Vessel Safety Check Coordinator We are into April. The Change of Watch was a wonderful evening. Welcome to Skipp Metzger as our new secretary and many thanks to Jennifer Wilenken for a great job as secretary and photographer, as well as her beautiful decorations for the Change of Watch and Christmas Party. Don t forget our next meeting will be on May 3 at Ry and Marla Barbin s Egg Lake Road summer home for the May Picnic. A special treat this year is that we will have the Virtual Trainer there that evening and, it will also be at the Port of Friday Harbor on May 4 and 5. Of course, you will be at the Opening Day Parade of vessels on May 6 to cheer on the FHPS entry - Key Lime Pie - owned and piloted by, yours truly, and Michele Gosinski. Or, if you would like to be on board displaying our red attire, contact Ann Einboden or myself. Coming up is the Future of Pork Bellies! Actually, it is the World Famous Pig War between Brentwood Bay Sail & Power Squadron and Friday Harbor Power Squadron on July 6-8 at Telegraph Harbour in British Columbia. Come join our team and bring that Pig home again. To finish out July join us in Port Browning July for a casual rendezvous with Friday Harbor Sailing Club. On a very serious note, the USPS Safety Committee wants to inform ALL owners of Kidde Fire Extinguishers to go to the Kidde website for information on several units with plastic handles that have been recalled. The list is extensive, so please check the website to see if your fire extinguisher is one of them. A vessel safety check can still be performed if your Kidde is recalled, with a side note annotating RECALL Tennis anyone? on Item 5 of the VSC form. Speaking of VSC s, call us to get one done on your vessel, be ready for Opening Day and get a safe start to what looks to be a wonderful boating season. Safe Boating. Don t forget our next meeting will be May 3 at Ry and Marla Barbin s.. In February, we had friends visiting from California. After their departure, we received a package in the mail and it was a bag full of wool dryer balls. I said to myself what on earth? Our friends know how much we like to do our part in trying to save our environment. These white wool balls are non-toxic, hypoallergenic, affordable, and an alternative to toxic fabric softener. That lovely fresh from the dryer scent that most fabric softeners have may include the following ingredients (and this is only a partial list). Quats: Can cause asthma, create antibiotic-resistant bacteria, and are very toxic to aquatic life. Methylisothiazolinone: (Say that 5x fast.) Aquatic toxicity, skin irritation, and skin sensitizer. Cetrimonium Chloride: Can cause asthma, and has high chronic toxicity to aquatic life. Alcohol ethoxylates: Aquatic toxicity, endocrine disruptor, cancer-causing, reproductive toxicity, may cause genetic defects, central nervous system impairment, asthma producing, linked to leukemia, liver damage, skin corrosive, and on and on. Fragrance: Neurotoxicity, dermatitis, respiratory concerns, high acute toxicity to aquatic life, and not biodegradable. If you want to know what your fabric softener contains, go to The Environmental Working Group for a complete list. I have tried the wool dryer balls with all of my clothes and they work great. Mine came six in a package and I have been using two balls at a time. However, if you use three balls for a small load and six balls for a large load, they say the clothes are separated more, thus the drying process is less. The balls last about 1,000 loads. No worries, you won t hear the sound of balls bouncing.
Harbor Lights Page 5 JOIN US While we continue to rank in first place in District 16 for percentage of growth, we also have received significant recognition with ranking second in the Nation for percentage of growth within our category of comparable squadron sizes. Membership By P/C Carolyn Bowen, P-IN I am very happy to announce that after a third of the way into the year already, we are trending in a positive direction with Squadron growth. Since February, we have increased our membership by seven. Please join me with a warm welcome to Steve Boyd, Everett and Kathryn Clary, Dwight Colley and Lois James, and Sal and Luise Maimone. These new members have all taken the ABC class, and we are pleased that Dwight Colley and Everett Clary are both currently enrolled in our Marine Navigation class (formerly the Piloting class). Luise Maimone is enrolled in the On-The- Water Training Class beginning April 16. We admire and thank you for continuing your education toward becoming better and safer boaters in challenging waters. We can all be very proud of Friday Harbor Power Squadron. We are a unique squadron in comparison to others, as we just happen to be located on an island. We have definite boundaries and can t draw from a wider, more expansive area. We are what we are! While we continue to rank in first place in District 16 for percentage of growth, we also have received significant recognition with ranking second in the Nation for percentage of growth within our category of comparable squadron sizes. Both rankings are quite an honor. I continue to encourage our new members, our sort of new members, and our longtime members to get involved in the Squadron. We do have a lot of fun, and it is even more fun to feel like a part of the group. There are always ways to help, and aside from that please come and enjoy our monthly meetings--they re fun and they re educational! Our next General Meeting (and last meeting until September) will be our Spring Picnic on May 3. Watch your for more information on this alwaysrewarding event. We look forward to seeing you in our upcoming activities. With boating season just around the corner, I also wish you all safe cruising and fair seas! Sal and Luise Maimone New members inducted into the Friday Harbor Power Squadron

Harbor Lights Page 10 Lt. Toni Bailey, S Editor of Harbor Lights Are you ready to deal with an emergency on your vessel? Take our Seamanship course and you will learn more on how to handle emergencies. Here is another great Excerpt from: VOL. 12 NO. 4 Distress Calls. How to call Mayday in an emergency. There are three levels of emergency calls that assist the U.S. Coast Guard or other receiving vessel in knowing how promptly a response is needed. In the event of an emergency on the water, use Channel 16 to hail for help on your VHF radio. Mayday is the highest level emergency call and is used only when there s imminent danger of loss of life or vessel. Pan-Pan calls reflect a sense of urgency without the potential loss of life or vessel, such as loss of steerage or power, or injuries without the potential for death but that adversely impact the ability to safely operate the boat. Sécurité alerts boaters that safety information is being broadcast. It could be a navigational problem like a piling loose in a channel, a light out on a navigational aid, a vessel overdue in transit, or severe weather moving through the area. Distress call: Mayday Mayday is used only for severe emergencies where there is immediate danger to life or property such as your boat is sinking, or there s a severely injured person or fire aboard.when calling for help, repeat Mayday three times. Anticipate the Coast Guard s questions and be prepared to answer them. State your geographical position. You can read the boat s latitude and longitude from the boat s GPS. If you can t get those coordinates, look for a prominent feature ashore that you can identify or a buoy or beacon on the water that you can identify and from which you can state your distance and direction. You can also use a chart to communicate your position relative to navigational aids. Describe your emergency, your situation and the assistance you desire. Be as precise as you can about the nature of your situation so the responder can be prepared to assist you. Describe what kind of boat you are in, its color and size plus any distinguishing features that would make it easy to identify. Describe the number of people on board. The Coast Guard or other responder will want to know how many people are on board and if any are injured or ill with any medical conditions that need attention. They also will want to know the condition of the boat. Saying Over means you are through with this piece of information and are waiting for a reply. The Coast Guard may request additional information and keep the radio link open. When the communication is completed, saying the word Out ends the expectation of additional transmissions.
