Ann Einboden, AP We have so much coming up this year that it makes my head spin. To start with, please check out our newly updated website: fridayharborpowersquadron.com Webmaster Phil Hankins has been busy creating a very attractive and easy to navigate site that is also now available on smart phones and tablets. You can access our full 2018 calendar on the site, by clicking on Calendar. Our February meeting was very well attended and we all cruised vicariously with Kent Howell, as he presented the Circumnavigation of Vancouver Island that he and Barb Daly did in New members Stephanie and Chad Coffey were sworn in and welcomed, and we were very happy to see several other newer members there, sporting their new name badges. It was fun to work at the Seattle Boat Show, demonstrating and teaching the use of the Boat Simulator/Virtual Trainer. We will have the Virtual Trainer in Friday Harbor May 4 6 and invite all of you who wish to give it a spin to come to Spring Street Landing and enjoy handling a boat with no risk. HARBOR LIGHTS We have met the District 16 Marketing Challenge, and I will be receiving a check for $1,000 at the D16 Spring Conference, thanks to all of you who helped make this happen. We can use this money to further market our mission of Safety on the Water, by offering more Onthe-Water Training. Thanks to our successful auction at the Holiday Party and this Challenge Grant, as soon as the weather settles down, we will offer several days of training, which is free to you, as members. Please me if you would like to participate and use the Boat Simulator/Virtual Trainer with your name(s) and the days you are available. ein@rockisland.com On page 6, we have our upcoming events and cruises that are scheduled on our calendar. Watch for our upcoming announcements of meetings and seminars related to the cruise planning. We will have the Virtual Trainer in Friday Harbor May 4-6 Please me if you would like to participate ein@rockisland.com.

3 Harbor Lights Page 3 Administrative Officer Report Teddy Gosinsky, AP and Vessel Safety Check Coordinator Spring is hopefully just around the corner, as is boating season. Upcoming events to note on your calendars are the Change of Watch ceremony and dinner at the San Juan Island Golf & Tennis Club on April 5, the Cap Santé Rendezvous with power squadrons and yacht clubs from San Juan Island and Bellingham on April 13-15, Opening Day of Boating Season Parade on May 6, and the Pig War Rendezvous at Telegraph Harbor with Brentwood Bay Power Squadron on July 6-8. Check out our new sign board at the Port of Friday Harbor main dock entrance. The new board will advertise power squadron activities and vessel safety checks. Friday Harbor Vessel Safety Inspectors performed 116 inspections in That gave us 4th place in District 16. In comparison to other power squadrons: Tacoma performed 433 inspections, Bremerton performed 158, Everett performed 122, Bellevue performed 111, and Bellingham performed 76. Our current staff of inspectors are Teddy Gosinski, Ann Einboden, Greg Maynard, Burke Crutchfield, and Bob Williams. If you would be interested in joining our team, please contact Ann or me. Spring is hopefully just around the corner, as is boating season. that our fleece jackets are TERRIBLE for our environment???. Patagonia s new study finds fleece jackets are a serious pollutant. The brand commissioned a study to find out how many synthetic microfibers the tiny bits of plastic that marine scientists say could be jeopardizing our oceans are shed from its jackets in the wash. The results aren't pretty. During laundering, a single fleece jacket sheds as many as 250,000 synthetic fibers. Based on an estimate of consumers across the world, laundering 100,000 Patagonia jackets each year, the amount of fibers released into the public waterwa ys is equivalent to the amount of plastic in up to 11,900 grocery bags. Check out the article at tagoniasnew-study-finds-fleece-jackets-are-serious-pollutant. BUY the GUPPYFRIEND Washing Bag from Patagonia. It will protect your synthetic garments and reduce the amount of microfibers that enter rivers and oceans from washing. After washing garments in GUPPYFRIEND, remove the microfibers from the bag and throw them away in the trash. We need to help this earth any way we can and the mammals that live in our oceans! Our oceans are becoming a garbage patch. Check out Making Waves from NOAA s National Ocean Service at and see how you can help. :

5 Harbor Lights Page 5 Lt. Toni Bailey, S Editor of Harbor Lights Fires are so scary. It would be so much better if we were proactive, rather than reactive. Here is another wonderful Excerpt from Vol. 12, No. 2 of the United States Power Squadron Compass. Preventing boat fires. How to prevent a fire aboard your boat. Fire on a boat is a serious matter. On shore, you can run away and call for help. On a boat, you have nowhere to go except into the water, and help may be far away. You can prevent many fires by quickly finding and correcting conditions that could cause a fire. Inspect your boat s bilge frequently. Keep it free of grease, oil and debris. Check your fuel system for leaks. Regularly inspect electrical wiring. Repair bare wires or loose electrical connections to prevent a spark from igniting fuel vapors. Use only marine-rated parts for repairs. Store dinghy fuel and propane topside where they have plenty of ventilation. Ensure charcoal is completely cold before securing the grill. Use caution because the embers may remain a fire hazard long after use. Close all hatches before fueling; ground your fuel line nozzle against the fill pipe to eliminate static sparks. Ventilate your engine compartment after every fueling until you are sure there are no dangerous vapors. Use your nose to sniff for vapors. If your boat is equipped with a bilge blower, run it for at least 4 minutes until the bilge is clear of fumes. Sniff the blower exhaust. Starting the engine when gasoline vapors are present in the bilge causes most fires. This type of fire starts with an explosion and spreads rapidly. Diesel fuel burns as fast as gasoline when ignited. The only difference is that the temperature at which the diesel fumes ignite is higher. Keep more than the required numbers and size of approved fire extinguishers readily accessible. Mount them properly where you can get at them quickly and easily. Have them checked annually to ensure they are fully charged and in working order. Plan ahead. Know what you will do to combat fire in any section of your boat. To learn more, take America s Boating Course, available in English and Spanish.

Check out our website at fridayharborpowersquadron.com Awarded Distinctive Performance for United States Power Squadrons Websites" in 2016 Thank you Webmaster Philip Hankins Join us on Facebook facebook.com/friday-harbor- Power-Squadron Cute! is the adjective most used when people see Båten. BÅTEN (pronounced Boaten) is Swedish for The Boat. She is a 20 supply boat commissioned by two women who lived on Orcas Island, Washington and had a farm on nearby Crane Island. They had Jay Benford design a boat that they could use to go between their home and their farm. Båten was built at A. Jensen & Sons Shipyard in Friday Harbor, Washington by shipwright Bill Ryerson. When Båten was launched on April 5, 1978, the local The Island Record s article headline stated: Båten launched at Jensen s Shipyard Just right for 2 people and a cow! Båten s distinctive knot work was done by Brian Toss. Båten has only been owned by women. The current owners enjoy cruising the local San Juan Islands and delight in the attention that their cute boat continues to receive. Båten is a classic addition in the San Juan Island Yacht Club s opening day parade. For the past three years she has had the honor of having the parade Grand Marshal on board! Just goes to show that classic cute is a cruising charmer! The USPS awarded the Distinctive Communicator Award for 2017 to our newsletter, the Harbor Lights!
