1 The Mainsheet Newsletter of the Bristol Yacht Club/May 2008 Commissioning Season Officially Opens Daffodils bloom, summer birds greet the dawn, lawns grow, and boaters, paint, polish, and generally mess around at their boats. Spring is also the time to welcome new members and revive old friendships at the club. So take time out from springtime chores and meet at BYC on Saturday May 3, for New Member Reception at 5:00 and Commissioning at 6:00. This formal launch to the Summer season will combine a traditional (mostly) flag and greeting ceremony for the new members, with a dinner/ mixer that will promote interaction amongst all. Here s hoping for beautiful weather and a great turnout! (See new member list on P. 3) Racing Mark Rotsky The application for the 2008 Wednesday Night Racing Season is enclosed and on the BYC Website. Please complete yours and submit it per the included instructions as soon as possible. We have scheduled a Skipper s Meeting on Wednesday, May 21 at 1830 so that everyone can get re-acquainted with the race committee, rules, schedules, and all the activity scheduled for the race courses this year. Please try to attend so that you are up to speed with what is happening. Also, if you are upgrading to a newer laptop computer and do not know what to do with your old one, please consider donating it for a good cause. If we had one on the RC boat, we could expedite race results. I hope you ve been taking advantage of this spell of good weather we ve had to get your boat ready to launch. I ll see you on the starting line soon. Waterfront Larry Gomes Spring is here and by the time you read this, our docks should be back in the water signaling that boating season is upon us. Here are some of the projects that the Waterfront Committee has been working on this spring: Dock Repairs Completed Several fearless members of the Waterfront Committee braved some very cold and wet work days to install 60 of new decking onto the dock. They also installed new support beams to make the dock less springy when you are walking down it. If these repairs were done by an outside contractor, it would have cost the club many thousands of dollars. Many thanks to Steve Cornwall, Karl Nordstrom, Mike Campbell, Jerry Stubbs, Russ Lundstrom, Bill McGovern, George Olear and all of the others who worked on this project. Dry Storage Stickers The new stickers for dry stored boats and trailers have arrived. Chris Healey will be handing them out or mailing them to the paid up members who signed up for this service. Each sticker is numbered so the club staff can track boats and trailers back to their owners. Thanks to Bob Washburn and Paul Sanroma for their help in getting these stickers printed. New Dingy Tie-down System A new dingy tie-down system will be installed after the floats are in the water. The old wood railings will be removed and individual rings will be installed for each dingy space George Olear designed a special socket that will allow these rings to be screwed in with a rechargeable drill saving many hours of time. 2 Commodore s Corner Get It Done Have Fun At one of our meetings during this year s cold cruel winter, Steward Chris Healey and I came up with the mantra that we hoped would carry us into and thru the 110th season of the Bristol Yacht Club. That mantra was Get It Done Have Fun. At various times, as the Commissioning of the Club drew nearer, and certain projects seemed insurmountable, we would repeat the mantra. Commissioning is just a few days away, and the BYC has never looked better. All of our missions have been accomplished. Hat s off to our Waterfront Committee, led by Steve Cornwall, which replaced three sections of our main floats, rebuilt a large section of the main pier walkway, and completed many other needed waterfront tasks. On April 22nd the Waterfront Grand Finale occurred when over twenty five volunteers gave up their morning and put all of our docks in. I am happy to report that no BYC members ended up in the water this year. Our beloved club house had her roof replaced, a central fan system installed (which will help cool the club on those hot summer days), and the interiors of the outdoor heads sealed and painted with a high tech epoxy (which will make them much more user friendly). Andrew Hausmann and his House Committee made all this possible. The Grounds Committee, over twenty members strong, headed by Ruth Souto dug in and brought our grounds back to life. It was a sight to behold, with a frenzied whirlwind motion of members pulling weeds, raking leaves, shoveling soil and painting outdoor surfaces. Grounds also recommended, and the board concurred, to use the funds allocated for the flagpole project to repair the dangerously sagging retaining wall between the driveway and the North side of the house. They plan to push the flagpole project to next year. On a further note George Olear and Chris Healey spent countless hours performing an extreme makeover on our cellar bringing it into this century. Isn t it frustrating when you talk to club members who just attended a great event at BYC, and you re left scratching your head wondering, how did I miss that? We have the solution! The most organized person on earth, Barbara Petrocelli of the BYC Social Committee, has compiled a complete list and description of every major BYC social event of the year. This flyer is suitable for framing, but we think it s fine if you just post it on your bulletin board. You ll never feel left out again! 4 Waterfront (cont.) Launch Area Float Repairs The small string of floats near the concrete launching ramp take a lot of abuse since they are left in the water year around. Chick Costa, Bill McGovern and others have volunteered to rebuild them. Knowing these guys, they will be better than new when the rebuild is complete. Thanks guys! Your Mooring Please notify the steward if your mooring is vacant so the club can utilize it for visiting yachts. Launch Trips With sky high fuel costs, we all need to economize. Try to reduce multiple launch trips to your boat by grouping crew arrivals or by bringing your boat into the dock for loading and unloading. Storm Rules for Dock Last year, some boats that were left at the dock during a storm broke loose and caused damage. This year, no boats will be allowed to stay overnight at the dock when high winds are predicted. Your boat is much safer on the mooring anyway in these conditions. No Bottom Cleaning or Diving Permitted from Dock Due to the new electric pedestal installed on the docks, there is no swimming, diving or bottom cleaning allowed on the dock. Parking While we would all like to park where the Waterfront Committee Chairman has his spot, please observe the loading/unloading time limits at the waterfront parking spots and by the way, try not to hit the Chairman s car on your way in or out.
