Commodore s Introduction I would like to offer my greetings to all members of Babbacombe Corinthian Sailing Club both old and new. This brochure aims to provide you with a background to our small, friendly club, with its rich history, which we would like to continue and build on in the years to come. Accordingly we also extend a warm welcome to visitors and prospective members and hope, through this brochure and during your visit, we can convince you of the merits of joining our club. Since the Club was founded in 1935, we have enjoyed dinghy sailing off Oddicombe Beach. Our dinghy fleet launches from our beach clubhouse situated near the base of the Babbacombe Cliff Railway. The Club evolved to form a strong social side, based at the St Marychurch clubhouse, where the pleasure of meeting socially to discuss sailing has extended to cover just about everything else! We have a very varied sailing programme this year including Open Days in May for new sailors who may be interested in sailing with us. We are again running the Babbacombe Regatta in June. We sail a variety of boats in our mixed fleet, with the Tasar being our more prominent club class. We are always looking for boats to join us. We also have a variety of club dinghies which can be made available to members. During the coming season we shall be running a selection of sailing training courses to RYA standards. We also intend to encourage crewing and mentoring opportunities for beginners of all ages. The ambiance of our St. Marychurch clubhouse has ensured we have a healthy mix of sailing and social members. Our doors are always open to welcome new members and their families. I look forward to seeing you! Neil Spacagna Commodore, Babbacombe Corinthian Sailing Club

Babbacombe Corinthian Sailing Club was founded on Saturday 22 nd June 1935 at a meeting held on Oddicombe Beach. The founder officers of the club were: President Mr H Thomas, who held this post until his death in 1950 Commodore Mr W Terry, affectionately known to all as The Admiral Hon Secretary Mr S W Francis Hon Treasurer Mr G D L White Captain Mr F T C Stoneman. The clubs headquarters were established in an old fisherman s hut on Oddicombe Beach, the stone walls of which now form the bottom storey of the present clubhouse. The Clubs first race was sailed on 6 th July 1935 in which six boats competed the race being won by Bumble Bee sailed by Mr S W Francis. In February 1936 the Club became affiliated to the Yacht Racing Association later to be re-named the Royal Yachting Association. The Club also was accepted as a member of the West of England Association, and became recognised as a major sailing club in Torbay. The first fleet of around a dozen racing dinghies included Snipes, Sharpies, 12ft Nationals and 14ft Internationals. Races were originally run afloat from an old 37ft naval whaler, using a 12-bore shotgun as the starting signal.

Later the races were started from a new clubhouse on Oddicombe Beach. This clubhouse, still in full use today, was erected in 1937 and opened by the Mayoress of Torquay on 26th June 1937, the year of the International Coronation Regatta. The Club held regular races up to 1939 until all activities were suspended for the war period. The beach headquarters was taken over by the RAF and Home Guard. The Club reformed in 1945 and in 1947 adopted Redwings as it main class. The members felt that some form of winter headquarters should be provided to enable lectures to be given and social contact maintained, so in October 1947, the top clubhouse and licensed premises at Fore Street, St Marychurch opened. The St Marychurch clubhouse used to be a sales office for locally mined marble hence the elaborate stonemasons crest over the main doors. In 1948 Torbay hosted the Olympic sailing events, and the Club was proud to assist in staffing of the Olympic Race Committee and to provide hospitality to overseas competitors. In 1950 the Redwing Nationals were hosted by BCSC, and shortly after that the Sprog class emerged as the main fleet. Many Sprog National Championships were held at Babbacombe in the following years saw the formation of our first cadet squadron. 7
BCSC Membership offer: Adult: 20 Senior: 15 Junior: 5 Includes a full social programme and discounted drinks at the top clubhouse
Many owners built their own dinghies at that time, and home-made Fireballs and Moths emerged to race alongside Finns and a growing Sprog fleet which remained strong until the 1980s. The single-handed Laser became popular during the 1980 s until the Club adopted the Tasar as the fleet dinghy as it remains today. Tasar sailors from BCSC have represented the UK in eight recent World Championships and the Club held the National Champions title in The club s commitment to training young sailors has helped over 1,500 youngsters to gain sailing experience. Three of our instructors have earned RYA awards for their efforts in voluntary training. The club was honoured by a visit from HRH The Princess Royal in her capacity as Patron of the RYA Sailability scheme. The Princess Royal attended a reception for all the students undergoing training during the year to present RYA certificates and to thank the volunteers. Today BCSC remains an active sailing and social club. We are proud of our history, engaged in the present and we look forward to welcoming new members to share in our future.

We sail in the spectacular amphitheatre of Babbacombe Bay. The beaches of Oddicombe and Babbacombe are overlooked by the high grassy esplanade of Babbacombe Downs. Our beach clubhouse can be reached by road or more scenically by the Babbacombe Cliff Railway. The sailing waters are usually calm as the prevailing south-westerlies blow over the Downs across the bay. However Oddicombe can become a high energy beach when easterly winds generate more wavy conditions. Our sailing season starts in the Spring and we run several trophy series races between April and September. Club sailing is held on Sunday mornings and Tuesday evenings. When racing we normally sail two races back-to-back around a triangular course. We currently race in two fleets; Mixed Handicap and the two-person Tasar. Our mixed fleet contains Picos, Fevas, Lasers, Laser 2000s and others, all of which sail under the PY Handicap system. We also run social sailing sessions and day-sailing outings as an alternative to club racing.

The Tasar Fleet became established in the 1980s. The fleet grew in strength and has produced some talented sailors who have represented Club and Country at Tasar World Championships in Canada, Australia, Thailand, USA and at home in Torbay in The Club has hosted several Tasar National Championships, and retains close ties with Tasar fleets around the UK. We regularly see our Tasar fleet travelling to represent BCSC at various open meetings and regattas. Sailing would not be possible without the excellent help and efforts of our support team. Our highly valued and fully trained volunteers act as race officers, course setters, safety boat crew and beach team and even tea and bacon butty makers! New sailors are always welcome and we can offer training courses and opportunities to crew with our regular sailors. There are boats for hire, boats for sale, and space in the boat park if you bring your own!

We generally sail a triangular course in Babbacombe Bay. Three marks are laid under the direction of the Race Officer and the start/finish lines are usually between a course mark and a RIB acting as a committee boat. We sail two races each of around 40 minutes. The second race starts as soon as the first is finished. We operate a start sequence using the flags shown here. If boat numbers are sufficient we may provide the Tasar fleet with a separate start to the rest of the boats who would sail in a mixed handicap fleet, starting 5 minutes earlier or later. The club racing sailing instructions will provide more detail. We use a limited number of flags for club racing, the most important of which are shown here.
Training is a very important part of our activities and we are keen to offer our facilities to new sailors and youngsters. A fleet of single-handed and doublehanded dinghies is available for instruction, social sailing and racing. We have a committed group of volunteer instructors and experienced club sailors who are happy to assist our novices and young sailors. Our volunteers promote a safe and friendly environment for people to come and join in a sporting activity with help and guidance on hand at all times. BCSC is a recognised RYA Training Centre and is subject to the rigours of their annual inspection with regards to safeguarding of students and safety on the water. We are very proud of our status which demands that all our equipment, instructors and safety equipment meet the RYA s very high standards. We arrange for, or run in-house, different levels of RYA courses for our members throughout the sailing season and beyond. These include dinghy sailing, power boating courses, first aid courses, race officer courses and VHF radio courses when needed. In addition to structured training, we offer taster sessions and opportunities to crew with our regular sailors during social sailing sessions and in club races. 18
Babbacombe Regatta The earliest recorded Babbacombe Regatta was in 1820 when it was won by Mr T Cary. These first Regattas were modest affairs and attracted mostly local sailors and crew. However the Regatta assumed more importance when a committee was set up in Their enthusiasm soon ensured that the Babbacombe Regatta became an essential part of Torbay s sailing calendar. The Committee meets annually to ensure the continued success of this two day event. This year will be the 190th Babbacombe Regatta and will attract dinghy sailors from around Torbay and from wider afield. We warmly welcome visitors to our regattas and try our best to deliver a great mix of sailing and social events. In Yachts and Yachting magazine BCSC was recently described as one of the friendliest clubs in the UK...

We meet and socialise at our top clubhouse in St Marychurch. This is a stone s throw from the cliff railway which links us to Oddicombe Beach and our sailing waters. We are open most evenings and at weekends and hold a wide variety of social events. Many of our members are non-sailors and have joined BCSC purely for the friendly social atmosphere that the Club offers. Drinks for members are discounted by means of an electronic membership card. We aim to have live music on a monthly basis. Our popular weekly quiz nights are on Thursday and during the sailing season we serve sailing suppers on Tuesday evenings. Friday is club night with a members prize draw and Saturdays are often special event nights. Saturday lunchtimes are popular and Sunday lunchtimes offer an opportunity for après-sail and socialising. We do - Receptions - - Prizegivings - - Lectures - - Sail Training - - Quiz Nights - - At Homes - - Private Parties - - Barbeques - - Steak Nights - - Big Screen Sports - - Discos - - Casino Nights - - Cocktail Evenings - - Theme Parties - We have an active Social Committee and we always welcome new committee members to bring fresh ideas and suggestions to the fore. The clubhouse is also available for members personal occasions such as birthdays and christenings etc. If sufficient bar takings can be guaranteed this is likely to be free of charge for members who are able to provide their own buffet and/or entertainment. Our membership ages range from 5 to those in their later years, so everyone is welcome. Please visit our website for up-to-date details of forthcoming social events.
We have a strong desire to build on our 80 year heritage and to secure the Club s future for generations to come. The Club plans to be sustainable by increasing membership levels, maintaining and improving our services and by training, supporting and encouraging our younger sailors. Membership levels have been rising and we would like to see further increases for both the social and the sailing sides. The Club relies mainly on revenue from membership fees, social activities and bar sales to operate and maintain its services. We believe that our fees are set at affordable and attractive levels, and thanks to the commitment and support from our membership we are able to keep our heads above the water. However the Club needs to invest in its facilities and special projects. Finance for this investment is dependent on fundraising efforts and securing grants and donations. We have a pressing need to make significant improvements in refurbishing and modernising our sailing facilities at Oddicombe Beach as well as our premises at the top clubhouse in St Marychurch. To help focus efforts, we have launched a fundraising campaign called Keep Your Club Afloat. We shall be holding a number of fundraising initiatives with the aim of securing sufficient capital to invest in our essential facilities. Our thanks go out to those who have already supported us, those who continue to support us and to our future supporters. Donations to the Keep Your Club Afloat campaign would be gratefully received and may be sent to The Commodore, Babbacombe Corinthian Sailing Club (Fundraising).
