(and it s the Big holidays we re talking about here.) That seems like an awfully fast switch of seasons, particularly when the current hot weather still screams out summer. The summer events were successful and chock-full. labor day at whites Cove recorded participation at a ten-year high, there was great turnout for our races, regattas and cruises, membership appears to be increasing rapidly, and even the Marina was filled-up for part of the summer. Seems like the only downside of great turnout is an overly full parking lot at the Club. now, more upcoming events will be taking place indoors: the Theme dinners, Thursday night Program, the awards dinner, and the General Membership Meeting that will unveil new plans for our wonderful Clubhouse. But wherever you are, inside or outside, enjoy the Club! and don t forget to vote by november 8. 3 FROM THE BRIDGE Put This One in the Books! by Tom Mooers, Vice Commodore Well, another fabulous summer is in the books! It looks like we are stuck with sunny, 75 degree fall weather, but sweater season is coming soon. Could be worse, right? In all seriousness though, Balboa Yacht Club had another fantastic summer with so many great events and accomplishments that I won t even try to list them all for fear of leaving something out. But I do know that none of it would have been possible without the hundreds of member volunteers and our fantastic staff! If you were one of those volunteers, on behalf of all members, thank you for your dedication to our Club. And the next time you are at the Club, please continue to share your gratitude with our staff. They do a great job! It has been such a pleasure working with all of you this year. It continues to impress me how a club the size of BYC can have so many people focused on a similar vision a community of dedicated friends sharing a passion for excellence in yachting. Since being a part of the Bridge, it s amazing the number of ideas I have heard or the actions taken that are consistently based on what is best for the Club as a whole, not for an individual. As would be expected, one of the major contributors in this area has been Commodore Doug West. So for his leadership and successfully navigating us through this year, I would like to thank Commodore Doug West, for always keeping what is important to our members at the root of every decision. While we will still have issues and important planning decisions to address, some of which you will read about in this issue of The Talewind, overall, the Club is in better shape today than it was when we started the year, and that s progress. Before I mention one of our current issues, I d like to thank P/C Bob Stevens and his Committee. Bob took on the responsibilities of Port with gusto he is a bull dog on getting things done and has been enforcing our port rules diligently. One of the issues that we have been dealing with (and a recurring one) is parking. Members continue to allow guests to park their cars (at times multiple cars) in the lots, forcing members to park on the street and walk to the Club. This can no longer be tolerated and a few violators are going to be very upset (and the member embarrassed) when they go out to get in their car and realize it has been towed, or they find a wheel lock (Boot) on a tire. While this may frustrate the offenders, it is for the benefit of all members and in accordance with the rules that we as members approved. If we don t like the rules, we can vote to change them, but until that time, we all need to follow them. One of the important planning decisions we are facing has to do with the repairs and maintenance of the Club. Please be sure to read the article from our Long Range Planning Committee. The project that has been in the works for a few years is now coming to fruition and will be discussed in our General Membership Meeting on October 11. As many of you have heard, due to the required Americans with Disabilities Act upgrades plus ongoing repairs and maintenance necessary, the project has grown and now includes some possible layout changes to our downstairs facility. In the opinion of your Bridge, making any approved layout changes at the same time that we make major repairs makes economic sense. Please plan to attend the meeting to hear more on this topic. As always, keep your ideas and suggestions coming. If you haven t done so already, remember to let Gracie know if you have any interest in volunteering on a committee for next year. Thanks for keeping our Club great! The Talewind - fall

4 membership news Summer New Members by Kristi Underwood, Communications and Membership Manager We ve seen a steady flow of new members coming in throughout the summer season. Even with fall right around the corner, applications are still being submitted. As the year comes to an end, it will be interesting to see if the Membership Committee meets their new member goal. Thanks to the efforts of member volunteers and Club staff we have had a very productive year in the Port. we are not done yet, but most things are clean, painted, and well organized. Soon you will see some very positive changes to the storage shed next to the south heads. additionally, we are working with Cal Rec to confirm the date for re-decking of the marina. it s time to recognize those who made it all work. Our Committee Chairs spend a good deal of their time every month keeping the Port looking shipshape! They are: Greg Boudreaux, lasers; Cameron Hausman, lockers; Steve Bird, Marina; Bob Hatch, Moorings; Tim O Neil, north Yard; George and Patience Bethel, Rowing/SuPs; Nancy Mellon, Sabots; Great Summer! by Bob Stevens, Port Captain Lowell Hauswald, South Yard; and Harvey Wills, Storm Patrol. also, we could not run the place without an outstanding dock crew well managed by Matt and his assistant Ray. To round out the thanks i need to add facilities Manager Brian, Projects Coordinator Pattii, Controller donna, General Manager david and of course, our receptionist, Gracie. all were big contributors to the success of this year. we have made good progress, but still have a few challenges. as in past years, one of our problems continues to be parking violations in both the north and south parking lots. not sure why this is still an issue because the Club rule is very simple. Only vehicles with current BYC stickers can park in the lots and designated spaces at all times. we just don t have enough room for visitors to park in the lots. Please make this a priority when you have others with you, and thank you to all of the members who follow the Club Rules on a regular basis! See you around the docks! 7 Mayor s report Summer in Catalina by Bill Powers, Catalina Station Mayor photo by kari Bretschger (Cruiser fleet). As the summer season comes to an end, we reflect on the wonderful time we had at Whites. From Opening Day to July 4th, Long Point, and Labor Day, as well as a few terrific birthday celebrations mixed in, we all enjoyed a fabulous summer. Members frequently commented that they have not seen this many members enjoying Whites in years and they were correct. Station Manager Mike, our trusted caretaker, estimated our attendance for dinner increased significantly. Long Point was a great success. Balboa Yacht Club s sailing prowess was celebrated in all classes. Over 350 sailors and friends attended a gourmet dinner prepared by the BYC staff. Margaritaville was the theme and it turned out be prophetic with Mario and his bartending team serving over 1,000 cocktails. Yes, that was 1,000. Warm weather and flat seas drew record crowds over Labor Day. From Hen Rock to Moonstone, we estimated over 150 boats shared the cove. The consensus was that there had not been a turnout this large in ten years. With the expected increase in boats using the cove, we ask that members continue to use caution around anchored boats. Members and non-members have expressed concern about small boats going too fast and exceeding the no wake rule. Please remember that there are swimmers, paddle boarders, and kayaks whose presence may not be visible amongst the anchored boats. It would not be a Mayor s Report without mentioning the drought situation that exits Cruiser Fleet leaving Whites on their Around Catalina Cruise. on Catalina. The island receives no water from the mainland and with the exception of Avalon, where there is a desalination plant, the camps are dependent on well water which, without rain, is running very low. In 2015, BYC was required to reduce our water usage by 25 percent from the previous year, and in 2016 we were given a new target of a 50 percent reduction from the same year. Despite the increased usage of Whites by our members, I am proud to state that BYC Commodore Doug West, F/C Molly Lynch, and S/C Alan Andrews at Whites Cove between segments of the Long Point Race. has been able to achieve its water targets so far, although a few months we came close. The conservation effort by our members and staff has been greatly appreciated. See you around the Club! The Talewind - fall

This is a wonderful event for the Marines. Since they are on call 24/7, six to seven hours spent enjoying themselves away from the base and on the water is a good experience. Mary longpré was on board It s OK with several of the Marines and later shar ed her thoughts: we had seven Marines onboard, of which two were women. One of them [the Marines], Bobbie, was back again after participating last year. he was so happy to be invited back again this year. we had a nice brisk start with about six knots of breeze, but that soon fell off to around three to four knots. The Race Committee shortened the course and we finished by harbor island about one hour after the start. we had close competition with Varuna, Chris Hemans boat. It s OK owes a lot of time in the handicap system to Varuna, but It s OK did correct out to win in the end. On the downwind leg, the It s OK crew invited several of the Marines to steer the yacht. 12 racing Long Point Race Week 2016 by Alan Andrews, Staff Commodore Over the August weekend, 39 top offshore boats from Southern California and over 388 sailors from around the world converged on Catalina Island for Long Point Race Week s three days of racing hosted jointly by Balboa and Newport Harbor Yacht Clubs. Competition was tight with the overall winner, Viggo Torbenson s Timeshaver, from Dana Point Yacht Club just half a point ahead of Chris Hemans Varuna, who in turn was just half a point ahead of Hasso Plattner s Claude at the end of the weekend. The event started on Friday in Newport Beach with a 24 mile cross channel race from Newport to Long Point on Catalina Island. As part of the shared hosting for this event, BYC was in charge of starting the races on Friday and finishing on Sunday. Principal Race Officer for Friday was Paul Blank joined by Pinky Greene and others aboard Tim and Sherry O Neil s power cat Alkoa. Uncharacteristically, wind at the start was a light southerly, which had the fleet beating on port tack towards Catalina s west end until midafternoon when the westerly filled in allowing the fleet to tack to starboard and power reach to Long Point. With the finish line just outside the moorings, the last mile had more shifts and light air with the southeasterly breeze fighting the westerly and rewarding crews with sharp eyes for reading the wind. BYC boats scored well with the Tres Gordos It s OK led by Andy Rose finishing 2 nd in Division A, Varuna finishing 2 nd in Division B, and Doubletime skippered by S/C Alan Andrews and F/C Molly Lynch winning Division D. Following racing, Friday dinner and camaraderie were enjoyed at NHYC s Moonstone Cove facility along with Daily First awards in each Division provided by Gosling s Rum and Hi-Time Wine Cellars Long Point Race Week 2016 Results Doubletime, skippered by S/C Alan Andrews and F/C Molly Lynch placed 1st in Division D. through arrangements by Robert Mooers. Sunday began with a great BYC breakfast at whites Cove and time for a morning swim before the 1300 warning gun. Some classes had clear leaders going into the last race, but division B and the J/120s were podium positions going down to the wire with three or four boats within one or two points. The afternoon start saw clear skies and westerly breeze, which made a quick race back from long Point to the newport Pier finish line. Results were very tight again including Varuna and Sereine tying on corrected time. after racing, over 100 sailors jammed the flag deck as Commodore west and S/C andrews presented trophies to the top three in each division. 15 sailing 2016 Junior Summer Sailing Program Recap by Becky Lenhart, Sailing Director Another Junior Summer Sailing Program has come and gone. Every year it seems to go by faster and faster! Balboa Yacht Club had a very successful six week program. Although our numbers were a little down from years past, it felt like the quality of the coaches and sailors was way up! Coach Mike Pinckney figured that within an eight week period this summer we had BYC Junior Sailors in all different levels of racing participate in 23 different regattas. To say the calendar was full is an understatement. We also had a solid group of beginning sailors this summer! The future is looking bright for BYC. 16 sailing sailing Racing and Lessons Learned Valentine is 1st Overall by David Wood, Junior Commodore Tough regatta. What did you learn? Those were the first words that my crew, Catherine Reynolds, and I heard from Mr. Pinckney, Head Sailing Coach at Balboa Yacht Club, after finishing the 2016 C420 North Americans held in August at Cabrillo Beach Yacht Club. Although we did not sail the best, we came out knowing what we needed to work on. But before I get to that, let me describe the four days of racing hell that provided such awareness. Day 1: Catherine and I had just completed the three-day training session with Coach Stewart Draheim in Cabrillo Beach. Those three days were crucial for us to feel comfortable as we headed into the next four days of intense, heavy wind sailing. The morning of the first day we felt great. We knew the wind was going to be light, which we thought would prove a huge advantage for us considering we were from Newport. As we made our way to the starting line, we were very nervous. The gun sounded, and we were instantly found in the back of the start line. This did not defeat us though because we knew there were still 11 races to go. Day 2: With our confidence still high, we made our way to the race course. The wind was a little stronger than the first day and was gusting up to 15 knots. Still confident in our abilities, Catherine and I tried to take full advantage of all the training we had done. Although we were consistently the second row and had to fight for a hole upwind, we kept our thoughts positive. Day 3 and 4: Both days were very similar. We continued to struggle on the starting line and had to fight for a spot upwind. Although this was disappointing, we kept our spirits high and tried to achieve perfection in every race. At the end, as we de-rigged our boat and loaded it onto the trailer, we looked forward to sitting and analyzing the past four days events. We knew that with each race we consistently had issues with our starts and in the one good race where we placed 7 th, we were first off the line. Coach Stew assured us that our boat handling and boat speed was as good as, if not better than, the top sailors, but we needed more experience sailing in larger regattas. As we left the venue, neither Catherine nor I was too disappointed in our performance. We have since planned future larger regattas, which we will be attending. So that s what we learned with this tough regatta! Thank you so much BYC for supporting our amazing learning experience at the 2016 C420 North Americans. Mary Longpré, on the other side of the camera for a change, holding her Kramer Trophy. Mary Longpré and her all-female crew including Carolyn Di Orio, Jill Golden, Linda Rasner, Pat Vranicar, and Shannon Carr came in first overall in Class A at South Shore Yacht Club s Summer Hibachi Series this year which took place in Newport Harbor each Wednesday evening. Valentine won the David K. Kramer Perpetual Trophy, having duplicated the same win in This was Mary s 39 th year racing in the South Shore Yacht Club s Summer Hibachi Series. The first five years were in her Schock 525 Skybird and the past 34 years in Valentine, a Schock 30/30. It is fun to still be somewhat competitive out there and still winning some fun races, said Mary after this nice outcome. During the C420 North American regatta. 16 balboa yacht club In 7th place.

17 photos this page by david robinson. around THE club BYC winemaker dinner by Charlie Foss, Winemaker Dinner Chair beautiful Sunday evening on a the newly renovated patio of Balboa Yacht Club greeted 30 members and their guests for the quarterly winemaker dinner the last day of July. The dinner, hosted by Jeff Meier, president and director of winemaking operation for J. lohr Vineyards & wines, was another sell-out. as the sun set on a warm summer Sunday, we began the evening with a reception that included several different delicious hors d oeuvres, passed among us, and a choice of either a sparkling wine or a nice rosé. These predinner gatherings are a great way for all of us to mingle and get acquainted with our host winemakers. Perfect they were for a refreshing start to what proved to be another informative gathering of like-minded members and a gourmet dinner prepared by BYC Chef Joseph (or is it, Chief Joseph?) and his talented crew. The five course dinner showcased the talents of Chef Joseph and started out with skate wing with uni sauce and seaweed salad paired with the J. lohr 2013 October Night Chardonnay. The creamy textures of the dish married well with the lush Chardonnay, which like the other wines of the evening, were representative of the reserve wines of J. lohr. The winery has several different wine centers located in napa, San Jose (their corporate headquarters), Monterey, and Paso Robles. while its total production is rather substantial, all of the wines we imbibed on this evening were from its Reserve wine Selections and are quite limited in production. Just as the sun was setting behind the patio helping to cool down temperatures, the second course arrived. it was a cold asparagus soup with yellow foot chanterelles topped with a brioche crouton and paired with the 2014 Carol s Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc. The grassiness of the wine was an excellent choice for the normally hard-topair-with asparagus dish. The crisp acidity of the wine was quite refreshing. a poached Maine medallion of lobster with roasted beets and wild arugula, came together surprisingly well, when paired with the 2013 Tower Road Petite Syrah. You read it right: a big red with a delicate lobster, and it worked! and, worked well! The beets were the key ingredient to this dish, when paired with the Syrah. who said white with fish and red with meat? This really was a pleasant surprise! Kudos to Chef Joseph for the foresight to suggest this one. although we could have all stopped there, we were treated to the main course, composed of a double Colorado lamb chop topped with dried cherry, rhubarb, pineapple, and a side of tater tots and a cabernet sauce. as many of you know, i like to throw into the mix a couple of blockbuster wines to provoke some thought and lively debate as to which marries best with the course. Mission accomplished! we were all about evenly split as to whether the 2013 Hill Top Cabernet Sauvignon or the 2013 Carol s Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon, both exquisite reserve wines from J. lohr, won out. Okay, i liked them both, but gave a slight edge to the former. Tough job, but somebody s got to do it! and, what would it be without a great dessert to close it out? The 2014 late harvest white Riesling was a very nice accompaniment to the Crater lake Blue Cheese, set side-by-side with a local peach. it would be a travesty not to mention the professional wait staff that was spot on when it came to the timeliness of the expert service we enjoyed at this and all of the winemaker dinners over the past year. under Banquet Manager israel s watchful eye, everything was orchestrated to perfection and is much appreciated by this Chairman. Thanks, again, to all of you and for the introductions always given by General Manager david Robinson. This dinner was the earliest sell-out since we ve been doing them, so be forewarned and put on your calendars the next one, which we have scheduled for Thursday, October 27. until then, cheers, and keep drinking great wine! Saturday morning walkers in the group made the 8,000 step trek to the beach and the Cabrillo Marine aquarium. upon returning, the group departed to catch the los angeles waterfront Red Trolley. in past years, the city operated a refurbished Pacific electric Red Car (the original form of local rapid transit) from the Cabrillo Beach Marina to the world Cruise Terminal. however, the Red Car has been replaced with the Red Trolley. while not as historic, it does offer an expanded route covering more of the local attractions and museums. The expanded route extends from the Cabrillo Marine aquarium to the Battleship iowa with a look through historic downtown. a stop is made at the Ports O Call waterfront shopping area, which is scheduled for a multi-million dollar renovation project, undoubtedly a multi-year undertaking. Several people of the group departed on the Red Trolley to tour the Battleship iowa. it is suggested that one allow two hours for the tour of the most impressive and historic warship. Others remained on the trolley for the tour of historic downtown. The trolley is free and runs every 15 minutes. it operates Saturday (noon to 6:00 pm) and Sunday (noon to 8:00 pm). The schedule, of course, is subject to change. Saturday evening the cruise group assembled in the CBYC bar and walked next door to the 22 nd Street landing for an excellent dinner. Sunday morning the group made the return to BYC. The seas were flat and the weather was clear. 18 BalBOa YaChT CluB

19 cruise fleet Cruise Fleet Ends the Year With Cruise Around Catalina by S/C Peter and Kari Bretschger, Cruise Captains The end of the year Cruise Fleet trip around Catalina attracted new and old members, sailors and power boaters, and members of all ages. In total, 11 vessels and 29 people participated and shared in fun times, made new friends and many new memories. On Friday, September 12 the Fleet met at Whites Cove for a safe arrival celebration on our new Adios, followed by dinner ashore under a full moon. On Saturday, the Fleet headed around the island as we listened to John Mack, Chief of Conservation and Science Officer for the Catalina Island Conservatory, who was our personal naturalist. John who lives with his wife and their two children in Middle Ranch had been chief of Natural Resources for Cleveland Metro parks. He now overseers the Conservancy s conservation department, including all wildlife, plant and geographical information systems. The circumnavigation of the island gave members the chance to explore safe harbors for anchoring in big Southerly or Santa Ana conditions with Jr. S/C Gary Davidson and S/C Peter Bretschger also sharing a few sailing strategies and Long Point Race Week stories. Safe on our moorings in Cat Harbor and enjoying another gorgeous day on Saturday, some of our members joined Kari for a hike and tour of Banning House. Thanks to Jr. S/C Gary and Nancy Davidson for remembering to bring the big burgee for our group photo! After another safe arrival celebration on Adios we enjoyed a group dinner at Harbor Reef Restaurant. The trip would not have been complete without a final stop in Avalon and lunch at Antonio s on Sunday. It was a foggy day, but we were blessed with calm seas and good visibility. 20 heritage committee History of the Balboa Yacht Club Marina by Director Michael Brooks, Heritage Committee Chair As we continue to scan the Balboa Yacht Club newsletters covering the past 72 years, many interesting things pop up. As of August 31, over 4,900 pages were scanned with about 1,000 remaining. Each issue is then assembled from individual scans and a text-searchable PDF is created. Our goal is to make every issue available in PDF form on the Club website by the end of November! For this Heritage issue, I thought I would take you back to 1967 to what the membership saw in The Talewind regarding the property just north of us. We can see what was going on 50 years ago and learn how our marina came to be. In May 1967, two months before the first Governor s Cup Race, The Talewind published an exciting plan to purchase the adjacent four acres from the Irvine Company for a giant expansion of Club facilities. Below is the actual published image of BYC s parking and marina expansion plan that the Irvine Company was promoting to us. In July 1967, engineering and appraisals were complete and the negotiation with the Irvine Company was about to begin. By the October 1967 issue, we were told that... the negotiations were continuing. In February 1968, Commodore Jeff Deaver wrote, A lease is now being prepared which will add to our present Club grounds a sizeable portion of property to the North of us. By February 1968, apparently things were getting scaled back! BYC sent the Irvine Company an offer for a smaller portion of land, but still with all of the water rights. In April 1968, communication to members no longer used the word acquisition. It had become a lease! Uh oh. In July 1968, Commodore Deaver reaffirmed the status of waiting for an Irvine Company response to our offer. He also mentioned that other parties were working to lease the property north of the project boundary, on what is now the Bahia Corinthian Yacht Club property. However, that was not affecting the negotiations. Then at the October 1968 General Membership Meeting, a letter from the Irvine Company was read describing a reduction of the full portion of adjacent land and an offer to lease to BYC a portion of the property immediately adjacent to the Club. In addition, they offered to develop, at their expense, a marina to be exclusively controlled and used by BYC. Within the hour, the membership voted to accept the Irvine Company s offer and authorized the Board of Directors to finalize negotiations. On July 1, 1970, the new BYC marina, constructed and paid for by the Irvine Company, was opened plan for marina and parking expansion. 20 balboa yacht club

21 long range planning Packed House at LRPC Update Meeting by Kari Bretschger, LRPC Publicity Chair Improving BYC s functionality as well as curb appeal from the water view. In August, the Long Range Planning Committee presented its finding to a packed house of over 100 members to show progress on plans for the Clubhouse and to receive member feedback. Since 2011, the Long Range Planning Committee, previously named the Centennial Committee, has been reaching out to members regarding what the Clubhouse should look like when we reach our Centennial in Based on input received, plans have been drafted and modified. These plans addressed the goals of Balboa Yacht Club s strategic plan, selected building enhancements, and needed structural changes. Specific plan modifications include changes to make our structure sound, become ADA compliant, and improve the functionality of our Club while staying within the constraints of our current use permit. The membership response to the plans shared at the August meeting was very positive overall and included some very useful input that ranged from placement of offices, locker storage, and use of the new multi-purpose Trophy Room. The Committee will continue to refine the plans based on member input and will provide an update at the General Membership Meeting on October 11, At that meeting, members will be asked to support funding for the engineering and permit portions of this project, as opposed to construction funding, which will come in the 2018 budget. With membership support, this project will proceed to a 2018 building start. Don t miss this important meeting on Tuesday, October 11. around the club Thursday Night Programs Starting Up on October 6 by Roger Grable, Judge Advocate Summer is over! It is time to start up our Thursday Night Programs again. First up on October 6 is Karen Heath Clark. Karen, her husband Bruce, and dog Roca, cruised the Mediterranean for eight summers on their own boat. Karen and her husband Bruce are former and future Club members. Karen has written a book, Mediterranean Summers, which I have read and found to be fascinating. Karen s very entertaining descriptions of the challenges of foreign boat ownership and winter storage, locations to cruise and where not to, and the joys of navigating the various and varied port clearances they encountered make for an engaging story. This promises to be fun evening as Karen has a keen sense of humor and is an outstanding storyteller. Next up on November 10 will be Bob Rogers. Bob s topic will be The Wedge: Dynasty, Tragedy, Legacy. Bob will explore how one tragic death led to an engineering marvel that destroyed the greatest surfing spot on the West Coast, while inadvertently creating one of the most iconic surfing wonders of the world. Bob s story is a personal account of how a young heir to a dynasty makes a tragic mistake that changes a family, a local community, and the sport of surfing. Starting up again in January we expect to continue to provide entertaining programs for our members, including the Mayor s Annual State of the Harbor Message. We are always looking for new ideas though, and suggestions are very welcome. You can contact me at rogerandpatt@cox.net. Members turn to listen to answers from V/C Mooers. The Talewind - fall
