Commodore s Report Don King, Commodore Lake Shore Sail Club - LOG Page 2 of is well under way, we have had our Meet and Greet combined with a Euchre Tourney. There was a plethora of really great homemade treats and most of it was consumed. MMM! Good! Past Commodore Greg Doyal is the 2016 Euchre Super Bowl Champion. Tied for 2 nd Peter Ross and Rick Ripard. Congratulations!!! Watch out for these guys on the cruises. Challenges will ensue! The 2016 Commodore s Ball, February 27 th was a Grand Affair. There was much fun and excitement in the air. Food was delicious and drinks were flowing. Past Commodore Greg Doyal and his class were celebrating in silver style. All wearing their Silver Stars and their brightest smiles. Greg Doyal was very appreciative of all the great memories and associations he now cherishes as his tenure of office comes to a close. There is a photo sampling of the good times at the Ball on our website and Facebook. Congratulations on a job well done to Commodore Greg Doyal and Lady Lynn. Thank You. Turning the attention to the upcoming season, we have our new LSSC Regatta. Please see the article later in this issue of the LOG. In order make our meetings a bit more entertaining and useful, I m introducing a meeting segment called Tech Time. Bring your Smartphone questions, tips, and problems for us to discuss. Novices and experts alike should benefit from this discussion. Examples of topics could include: saving battery life, increase charging speed, making webpages favorites or bookmarks, organizing photos, sending photos, downloading photos to clear memory, screen shots, or whatever you think of. Everyone has things they could learn or share. Write down your questions and bring them to the next meeting at the Sports Channel Bar. Constitution and Bylaws Chairman, Steve Selinger has been reviewing and updating the C&B documents. More on that in Steve s Log article. Rear Commodore Denis Nicole has a great racing season planned, Vice Commodore John Riess has already started the fun social season is going to be Great Year. I hope everyone comes along for the ride!

Page 3 of 19 Vice Commodore s Report John Riess, Vice Commodore Lake Shore Sail Club - LOG Fellow Lake Shore members it is my pleasure the serve as your Vice Commodore this year. As we do every year, LSSC will have a full calendar of Cruises and Outings. The LSSC Winter Outing took place on March 13 th at Harbor Lanes in St. Clair Shores. Please see the article and photographs in this issue of the LOG. This year I have planned cruises to three different marinas for our holiday cruises. Shore Sail Club. Memorial Day Cruise - This year we will be sailing to the Cove Marina on the Thames River for the Memorial Day Cruise. Reservations can be made by calling the marina directly at (519) When you reserve your well please inform either Linda or Ruth that you are part of Lake Independence Day Cruise - The Independence Day cruise will be to Metropolitan Beach on July 2 nd thru July 4 th. The theme for the 4 th of July cruise will be an old fashion country picnic and will feature a Radio Controlled sailboat regatta and a croquet tournament. Reserve your slip soon - Metro Beach fills up early on the holidays. Reservations can only be made through the Michigan DNR online at Metro Beach is listed as Lake St. Clair Marina. When you make your reservation indicate that you would like a slip in the South Marina. Labor Day Cruise - The final cruise this year is the Labor Day Cruise. We will be returning to Belle River. Grab your coconuts and grass skirts as we are heading to the South Seas to end the summer with a luau. There are only 6 wells available, reservations must be made early to secure your well. Call (519) to make your reservations. The cruises are open to all LSSC members. If you choose not to sail, you are welcome to drive, join us for dinner, and spend the day touring the town and the marina. Please note - Two of the cruise destinations are in Canada: the Cove Marina and the Belle River Marina. For ease in reentering the United States, you will need an I-68 card or a NEXUS card.

Rear Commodore s Report Denis Nicole, Rear Commodore Lake Shore Sail Club - LOG Page 4 of 19 As I write this the water temperature is 38. the air temperature is 62. it s April and about time to welcome the near start of the 2016 LSSC sailing season! I want to thank all the club members for your confidence in this Cruiser as he embarks on organizing the racing season. Based on the positive support from countless individuals so far, I know we re going to have a year of great racing! Thanks to PC Greg, Commodore Don and Vice Commodore John for getting me started on this path. More than 20 club members have volunteered for Race Committee jobs this year. We would not have a racing season without the many hours of volunteer work these people put into our club. Please see page 7 of the LSSC Roster for their names and responsibilities. A special thanks to the Greatest Committee Boat Team on the lake: PRO Danielle Templeton, Linda Evo, Lady Cathy McGuire, Lady Kathy McGuire, Susanne Guendelsberger, Marsha Cooper, Lady Mary Nicole, Mark & Peggy Stephenson, PC Frank Kunick, and Lady Kathleen Riess, who will also Chair the Hotdog Committee. So, what s going on so far this year? If you missed the Commodore s Ball, you missed the debut of my new uniform - priceless! On the sponsor front, sponsors have been beating the doors down to support our club, with 10 Premier, 18 Advertising and 8 club member sponsors to date. These 36 sponsors, including in kind donations, will contribute $8,350 to our club. Let s all demonstrate our support for them in return! In March Lady Mary and I represented Lake Shore Sail Club at North Star Sail Club for a lively presentation on committee boat responsibilities called Fun With Flags. In early April many members of the Committee Boat Team will be attending the DRYA sponsored US Sailing Race Committee training course at DYC. The race marks have been inventoried and repair parts purchased in preparation for an April workday in anticipation of the Tow Boat US marks launch in early May. The Coast Guard has also advised that our race schedule is approved with no permit required. And T-shirt preparations are underway with the first delivery anticipated for the April meeting. Check out RaceQ s a cell phone app that will be introduced as part of the Sunset Series this year. Racers who use the app while racing will be able to see their actions recorded and replayed as an avatar against all other racers using the app. Our PRO Danielle has agreed to input marks and starts for each class and race from the committee boat. Thanks Danielle! To paint or not to paint that is the question! As I wrap up this article I ll leave you to reflect on those timely words of Mr. Miyagi who said Wax on Wax off! Have a fantastic racing season this year both on and off the water!

Page 5 of 19 Lake Shore Sail Club - LOG Past Commodore Mike McGuire Honored Dan Guendelsberger Congratulations to Commodore Mike McGuire! Mike was inducted into the DRYA Hall of Fame at the 2015 Awards hosted by the Grosse Pointe Yacht Club. A large group of family and friends were present to share the moment. DRYA Commodore Mickey Bennett was Master of Ceremonies and shared the following thoughts about Mike before presenting the award. Commodore Mike McGuire also comes from a long line of great sailors. Mike is the greatgrandson of Frankie Scenter, one of the original ten members of our DRYA Hall of Fame. Mike s father founded LSSC in 1969 and was its first Commodore and his daughter and cousin are also Past Commodores of LSSC. Mike continues the family sailing legacy by bringing is daughter, Sheila, aboard as crew and fostering her development to become Commodore of LSSC in Mike is himself a three-time Commodore, first with LSSC in Soon after his LSSC Commodore year Mike bought a new boat, a Cal 9.2. According to his long-time friend Commodore Brian Lang, the boat was curiously unbeatable on one tack, yet a dog on the other. Because unbeknownst to Mike, he had innovated the canting keel. Well, not so much as canting as canted the keel of his beautiful new boat was clearly off center. The name of the boat was Khruschiki (everyone thought it was named after a Soviet dictator when it really meant Angel Wings ). Perhaps one of the wings was angelic. Cal Yachts finally agreed to redeem Mike s boat. Mike then purchased another boat, a Santana 35, and aptly named it Itsfunagain because, again, it was. Mike then became Commodore of DRYA in 1989 and finally with the Commodores Club in Mike maintains a ceaseless commitment to supporting sailing and building a growing and healthy racing environment in our area. Mike is a lifelong sailor currently racing and cruising Itsfunagain on the Great Lakes. Commodore McGuire s contributions to local sailing are legion. In 1982 he innovated the LSSC Inter-Club Team Championship Race, which was a huge success for many years and drew boats from as far away as Port Huron. The race has been sailed in all but two years since. In 2009, Mike created the position of PHRF representative to the DRYA Executive Committee. Following that, Mike invented the Multi-sail Plan, first experimenting with it in LSSC races and then campaigning for its adoption by DRYA. He developed an innovative Excel-based scoring system and has tirelessly computed race results for hundreds of LSSC and DRYA races. He has written the scoring programs, debugged them, input data and reported the results week in and week out. His ability to create a wide range of race statistics is stunning. He currently is the lead scorer of our DRYA races. He actually started scoring back in the 70 s when he ran the score sheets to Dearborn to use a primitive computer to mash up the numbers and then brought the results back to the host club.

Lake Shore Sail Club - LOG Page 6 of 19 Past Commodore Mike McGuire Honored (cont.) For the last 30 years he has served on many race committees including the Mills Race, BYC Nood and BOD, Melges Nationals, US Youth Championship and our DRYA series. He has given tirelessly to our sport and shown true dedication to yacht racing. His dedication does not stop at yacht racing. Year in and year out, Commodore McGuire is one of the top Great Lakes YC fundraisers for the Leukemia Cup Regatta held at GLYC since He also sits on the Leukemia Cup committee and is instrumental in the planning of the event every year. His unwavering commitment to the Leukemia Cup helps provide funding for patient care and research into finding the cure for blood cancers. Mike remains as active as ever today in the promotion of racing and sailing in our area and he s not done yet.

Page 7 of 19 Lake Shore Sail Club - LOG LSSC Regatta Commodore Don King The new LSSC Regatta will be held Saturday, June 11. This regatta will use our entire 10.4 nm LSSC course and will be run in the same manner as a DRYA point counter, even though this year it will not count. We anticipate the regatta will gain the support of DRYA racers and will count for season points next year. All DRYA Classes are invited. The Regatta Awards Party will follow the race at the new Watermark Bar and Grille inside the Jefferson Beach Marina. Please plan to join the party. I am asking everyone to support the effort to make this a Grand Spectacle event. I want to see all LSSC Boats dress ship for the weekend no matter where you dock. Racing is encouraged for all members - we will have a Club JAM Class for Club boats that are not DRYA registered. Those who don t race are encouraged to be spectators by bring your boats and guests out to watch the race. RaceQs - We are encouraging the use of RaceQs, a free smartphone app that will stream the race (boat position and other pertinent data) to smartphones and Big TVs that have internet access. The Watermark Bar and Grille and other local establishments will be able watch, so the sailors and non-sailors alike will get an idea of what is happening on the lake and hopefully take an interest in racing. Team Race - The LSSC Regatta replaces the Inter Club Team Championship Race that was formerly run in October. The Inter Club Team Championship Trophy will be awarded to the Club that earns the highest finish score in this regatta. Scoring details are still being worked out. Thomas Cup - The Thomas Cup Race that had been held on the same Sunday as this regatta will be incorporated into the regatta. The LSSC boat that has the best corrected time, regardless of their class, will be awarded the Thomas Cup Trophy. As you can see, all of this will happen before the June meeting. And there is much to do to make this a Great Race. Please volunteer in any way you can. Spread the news. Build the excitement. We are planning many avenues of publicity, including TV, Newspapers, Magazines, and Posters. Look for ways to promote our LSSC Regatta. Talk it up! Watch your and our website as well as Facebook. Be sure to Like our posts and comment to keep the conversation lively.

Lake Shore Sail Club - LOG Page 10 of North Channel Cruisers Net Party PC Tom Boyce Greetings from the Sunsine State! Every year in February, Roy Eaton hosts a party in Punta Gorda for all the North Channel cruisers spending the winter in Florida. As many of you know, Roy broadcasts his show every morning between 0900 & 1000 during the summer on VHF Channel 71 from the Anchor Inn on Manitouilin Island. He has become a legend of sorts for his broadcasts and donating his time to connect all the boaters visiting the NC and keeping them informed about weather, emergencies, local & world news, sports, and helpful information for everyone. He also travels extensively giving lectures and talks to promote the area. This year Lady Brenda, Lilli, and I had a chance to attend along with 90+ other cruisers, including Dave Naples a past LSSC member who cooked the burgers and brats, and also arranged for the special cake featuring an edible picture of sailboats anchored in Mary Ann Cove located in the Baie of Fine. Dave is also very active with the Net and substitutes for Roy occasionally during the summer. Everyone brought a dish to pass and it was a huge gathering of boaters we have met while sailing up north over the years. Some of the companies associated with the Cruiser s Net donated door prizes and we were fortunate enough to be drawn for a waterproof carry bag. A great time was had by all!

Winter Meet & Greet Ed Dyer, LOG Editor Lake Shore Sail Club - LOG Page 12 of 19 The Winter Meet and Greet was held at the Tompkins Center. The event featured a chili cook off and a Euchre tournament which was won by Greg Doyle. The format of the Euchre tournament insured that everyone kept moving and changed partners frequently. The participants contributed $2.00 to a kitty which made things more interesting. As is always the case, the members put out a bountiful spread which included several kinds of chili as well as soups and appetizers. If anyone left hungry, it was their own fault. PC Sheila Fleming, her sister Molly Mathe, Mike Mathe, and Noah Mathe RC Denis Nicole, Commodore Don King, PC Steve Selinger Norm Mallory and PC Dick Peters The table decorations were over the top. This one appears to be quite fishy.

Commodores Ball Ed Dyer, LOG Editor Lake Shore Sail Club - LOG Page 14 of 19 The 2016 Commodores Ball honoring Commodore Greg Doyle was held this year at MacRay Harbor. As always, the food was wonderful, the DJ was very good and the open bar insured that everyone well lubricated. Tim Thompson roasted Greg with a both funny and heartwarming speech. I never knew that Greg was such an experienced sailor. The Jim Nixon award was presented to Past Commodore Frank Sonye who has been such a big help to me with the Log and fixed my computer so many times. Past Commodore Mike McGuire was honored for his election into the DRYA Hall of Fame. Tim read a list of Mike s accomplishments which was totally amazing. The helm of the Lakeshore Sail Club was passed to Commodore Don King was is serving for the second time. The visiting commodores serenaded Don with the immortal words of We Love or Commodore and the bar was opened. The evening concluded with dancing to music provided by DJ Brian Fountain a/k/a Mr. Motown. Past Commodore Mike McGuire proposes a toast to the Queen of England Lady Dara Blaty sings the Canadian and US National Anthems A piper leads the visiting commodores and the LSSC bridge officers into the room

Page 17 of 19 Constitution/Bylaw Clean Up PC Steve Selinger Lake Shore Sail Club - LOG Recently I was asked by Commodore King to review the LSSC Constitution and Bylaws and to bring them up to date with the current conditions and practices, and without making any material changes. In keeping with this request, the following revisions are being proposed: Change the pronouns to be gender neutral Eliminated the reference to the Gin Pole Eliminated reference to the Membership Committee (work now being done by the Board) Allow or mail transmission of information. A marked up copy of the proposed revisions will be ed to LSSC members. These revisions will be discussed at the April meeting and then put thru the formal revision procedure.
