A History of the Corinthian Yacht Club The Corinthian Yacht Club, the second oldest yacht club on the Pacific Coast, was founded in 1886 by a group of high-spirited young yachtsmen.

4 A History of the Corinthian Yacht Club The Corinthian Yacht Club, the second oldest yacht club on the Pacific Coast, was founded in 1886 by a group of high-spirited young yachtsmen. This small group of members from the San Francisco Yacht Club felt their interests were not represented by the large, professionally crewed yachts of the day. They wanted to promote and encourage amateur small boat yachting in the Bay Area. For a few hundred dollars they purchased the tip of Valentine s Island, (now known as Corinthian Island) and called themselves, Corinthian Yacht Club-gentlemen yachtsmen, sportsmen, men of fashion and pleasure. The word Corinthian is taken in the sailing world to mean amateur and is derived from the Corinthian games in ancient Greece, contemporary to the Olympic games that took place on the ithsmus of Corinth. The Colonial Revival clubhouse-the oldest on the West Coast-was built in 1911, replacing the original small clubhouse. The impressive structure offers a spectacular unobstructed view of San Francisco Bay. Arguably constructed as a folly, the clubhouse features massive Corinthian columns to tie its name to its design. Steeped in yachting tradition and history, the Club nevertheless recognized in the 1970s that times were changing. They began a program of upgrading and modernizing its facilities and expanding its membership. Now in its third century, The Corinthian is going stronger than ever. Racing plays a major role in The Club. From the Mid-Winter Opener in January and February, to the popular April to September Friday Night Series and the Season Closer One Design weekend, Corinthians are proud to support the sport by offering great races with an accent on fun and competition. Club members participate in competition from the club level to international and ocean racing, always with an unflagging Corinthian spirit of sportsmanship. 5 A History of the Regatta 2009 marks the 32nd Anniversary of the International Regatta for Nordic Folkboats on the San Francisco Bay. The Regatta was originally conceived in 1975 by a group of German and American sailors enjoying cocktails after a Gold Cup Regatta in Travemunde, Germany. This year s competition marks the fourteenth time that the regatta has been held. The first international events were dominated by Scandinavian entrants, but in recent years, local competitors have more than held their own. Since the first boats were imported over 50 years ago, the Nordic Folkboat has been a significant and colorful part of the racing scene on the San Francisco Bay. The Folkboat Class is enjoying a surge of renewed interest. Many of the vintage classics are being restored, and new boats have joined the fleet. The starting line at Folkboat regattas has become wonderfully chaotic as participation has more than doubled in the past five years. The San Francisco Bay Folkboat fleet remains one of the most competitive one-design classes on the rough waters inside the Golden Gate. 7 3-D Sailing A few months after Don and Joan Wilson got married in 1968, they decided to buy a Folkboat. US72, a beautiful Borresen boat built in 1955 became available, so after sailing it over to Svendsen s Boat Yard in Alameda to get it checked out, Svend gave it the ok and Don and Joan became the new owners. They started racing the boat in the Alameda- Oakland Estuary and in the Wednesday Evening Series on the City Front. Then In 1978, Don won the season championship. For the Wilsons sailing became a family affair after their sons were born David in 1974 and Daniel in As soon as the boys were old enough, they enrolled in the Richmond Yacht Club junior program where El Toros are used for the instruction. Alone in an 8 foot dinghy is said to be the best way to learn how to handle a sailboat. In 1981, Don and Joan sold US72 and planned to get a fiberglass boat that would be better for the kids. They considered other classes, but came to the conclusion that it is not just a boat you have, but an entire group of friends. So they bought US106, a fiberglass Folkboat Eric Andreasen had brought over to race in the International Regatta. For many years, Brock delappe was the loyal crew on US106 until he was displaced by growing Wilson boys, David and Daniel. Brock was forced into buying his own boat two years ago, adding to our local fleet. David especially took to racing and went on to competitive racing in college. He got a letter in sailing at Harvard and taught sailing at the Manhattan Yacht Club while he was a graduate student at Columbia. He raced dinghies in New York in the winter and coached the sailing team at a school in England where he was teaching. Any excuse to be on the water. He also campaigned a boat in the Folkboat Gold Cup races in 2008 in Flensburg and 2009 in Marstrand with Don and crew Martin Leivers. Don, David and Daniel became an unbeatable team. In 2007, with Don as skipper, they won the season championship. With David at the helm, they won the Wednesday Evening Series. And again with David at the helm, they won the 2007 San Francisco International Regatta for Nordic Folkboats. They won the season championship again in Daniel is now living in New York, so the 3-D Wilson team has been disbanded for now. But when asked early this summer about the loss of Daniel as crew, Joan, who is actively involved on the race committee of the Folkboat Wednesday Evening Series, stated Oh, he ll be flying back for the Woodies! David, who is now a doctor living with his wife Tabitha in San Francisco, will be sailing US106 in the 2009 SF Cup with his father Don as crew. David, Daniel and Don Wilson 5
