1 Hyannis Yacht Club Organized 1927 The Telltale April 2008 Commodore s Report The winter has passed; spring is here! As we sprang the clocks ahead, everyone jump started their thoughts with great enthusiasm toward preparations for the upcoming summer season. The first brave souls, the Barnstable High School Sailing Team members, have begun practicing for their 2008 season. Stop by and enjoy the warmth of the bar while you watch them sail in front of the Club in the late afternoon. Caddyshack was a fun-filled monthly party! Thanks to Jack and Lisa Meade, with the help of Jeannie Wallin our fantastic Entertainment Committee Chairperson, a great evening of crazy costumes, delicious food, and terrific camaraderie was the order of the event for all who ventured out to join the fun. Mark your calendars for April 11th, our Bingo Party, complete with dogs and chili! Those of you who are missing the monthly parties are passing up great opportunities for outstanding food, terrific libations, and a chance just to relax and laugh! The regatta meeting on Friday, March 28th, at 7pm is for all our members. We will review the many different ways one can volunteer on the water and shore-side to help with this annual endeavor. We hope that many members will attend this evening and subsequently sign up to help. The bar will be open following the meeting, so come on down, relax, and enjoy your Club! April 19th at 8am is our annual spring dock launching. Many hands are needed to get this huge task completed. We encourage any member who can offer some time to join us. We have a new club initiative that started this winter. An interested and enthusiastic group of members have begun working to organize and preserve the rich history of our Club. Led by Joe Hoffman, the Archive Group will host a get together on Sunday, April 20th at 3:00 pm. Members with information, documents, or pictures that you would be willing to share should stop by and meet with the Archive Group. This is a wonderful project that will preserve the rich history of our Club. continued on page 2 BINGO Night at HYC! I thank them on behalf of the Board of Trustees for their outstanding efforts! 3 Ocean Class Update Happy spring! Crocuses are popping up and boat covers are being lifted off to see what has happened over the winter; what new problems need fixing and what old ones we forgot about. The Ocean Race & Race Administration Committees have been hard at work preparing for the new season. As promised, we ve reviewed your comments and will implement changes in areas that need improvement. The area that appears to need the most improvement is to increase the number of participants for each event. The Wednesday night series has maintained participation, so the schedule will remain the same, although new ideas will be implemented in an attempt to simplify the process of setting the courses to have more racing time. We will also relax the regulations to allow any sailboat that has a current year PHRF certificate to compete with us on Wednesday nights regardless of whether they have lifelines or not. This means that any J22 that doesn t or can t compete in the One Design program or would like more racing time can sail with us. Any boat that meets the requirements is welcomed! Low attendance during weekend racing was problematic. There were times when we had more support personnel than the number of crew on the boats that came to race. We know certain events are always well attended and those will be left as is. It s apparent that people lead busy lives, and although they like to race, there is only so much time in their schedules for various activities. Therefore, in an effort to boost turnout at our events, we ve decided to try something new. Weekend events have been significantly cut back. For those who can t get enough racing on Wednesday nights and the scheduled weekend series, you will be able to get out on the J22 line on Sunday afternoons for one or two races. You will not interfere with the 22s as you will only share the start and finish lines. Separate start sequences and courses utilizing government marks will help keep the fleets separated and prevent interference. PHRF boats will be scored, results will be posted, but they will be non-trophy events. Last year we implemented a crew/skipper bulletin board form on the HYC website. This enables skippers looking for crews and crews looking for skippers to connect. We hope this will help those interested in getting involved in racing to find their way onto the course. To help you plan for the racing season the schedule is listed on this page. Please help us get the word out so we can get as many boats on the line as possible! We look forward to seeing you all soon! ~ The Ocean Race Committee Ocean Race Schedule Wilbur Cup Series: Baxter Memorial / Long Distance Race - 6/21 Race Around the Cape - 7/11 & 7/12 Hyannis Regatta - 7/26 & 7/27 Tarpaulin Cove Regatta - 8/9 & 8/10 Hurricane Cup / Eye of the Storm - 9/6 & 9/7 Wednesday Night Beercan Series: June Series: - 6/4, 6/11, 6/18, 6/25 July Series: - 7/2, 7/9, 7/16, 7/23, 7/30 August Series: - 8/6, 8/13, 8/20, 8/ One Design Racing Schedule (Preliminary) THURSDAY SERIES All courses will be in Lewis Bay June 5, 12, 19, 26 ( J-22 and Laser) 1st warning signal 1800 July 3, 10, 17, 31 ( J-22 and Laser) 1st warning signal 1800 August 7, 14, 21, 28 ( J-22 and Laser) 1st warning signal 1800 SUNDAY SERIES June 1, 8, 15, 22 ( J-22 and Laser) 1st warning signal 1000 All courses will be in Lewis Bay July June 29, July 6, 13, 20 (J-22, Laser, 420 and Opti) August 3, 10, 17, 24, 31 ( J-22, Laser, 420 and Opti) Lasers and 420 s All courses will be in Lewis Bay 1st warning signal 1100 Opti - All courses will be in Lewis Bay 1st warning signal 1030 J-22 All courses south of Hyannisport Breakwater 1st warning signal 1300 September 7, 14, 21, 28 ( J-22 and Laser) 1st warning signal 1000 All courses will be in Lewis Bay Special Trophy Races July 4th ( J-22, Laser, 420 and Opti) 1st warning signal 1000 Labor Day, September 4 ( J-22, Laser, 420 and Opti) 1st warning signal 1000 Commodore s Cup The Commodore s Cup will be awarded to the J-22, Laser and Opti classes with the lowest total point score for the combined Sunday series in July and August. 3

4 General Manager s Report By the time this Telltale is in your mailbox spring will have arrived and the Barnstable High Sailing Team will have begun another season. To follow on last year s successful Raising the Sail clinic the BHS sailing team invited Kyle Shattuck currently a coach at the Naval Academy, Tim Fallon past world team racing champion, and Jennifer Langile nutritionist from SailTrim to present and coach during this year s event. The weekend clinic will begin on Friday, March 28th with a coach s session and dinner, followed by a weekend of fleet and team racing discussions, and the importance of conditioning to prepare for a grueling day on the water. The sailors will practice fleet racing techniques and team racing strategies and end each day s session with competitive racing. To make all this possible Dean and Mike launched the 420 floats on March 11th and the boats went in the water the week of March 18th. The remaining docks are scheduled to be launched on April 19th at 8:00am. On April 12th at 9:00am a dock maintenance party is scheduled. Volunteers are always welcome on both these days. Dean and Mike are also finishing up the launches and the smaller powerboats, while Seaworthy Marine is installing new fuel tanks and a new engine in the Frank B Bearse. The entire fleet looks great and will be on schedule for a springtime commissioning. At the Captain s Table there s always a lot of activity with dinner dances, movie nights, various classes, and wine tastings scheduled. The highlight of the spring season will be the Celebrity Wine dinner on May 19th featuring Jonathan Emmerich, winemaker at Silverado Vineyards. Check out this issue of the Telltale or go to the website for additional details or to register for events. Have a great spring! ~Wes Richardson Waterfront Update Just a reminder - the Hyannis Yacht Club does not collect waste oil or batteries for disposal. Members are responsible for the removal and disposal of their own items. Youth Committee Update Registration for the swim/sail summer program is on line and it s now easier than ever to enroll. Log onto the website, and from the program drop down menu, click onto the sail program tab on the left side of the screen. On the right side of the screen you will see the link for the 2008 sail class listing which, when opened, will give you your child s recommended placement for the 2008 program. To select the correct swimming class, click onto the swim program tab, and follow the same procedure. When you ve found the class recommendation for both swim and sail, close these screens and you are now ready to complete the registration form which you will find on the left side of the screen under either the sail or swim drop down. Please be sure to complete all the information plus the medical form by April 1st to avoid a $50.00 late fee. HYC is seeking housing for four instructors. Although we know it s a lot to ask, there are many benefits that can help make the summer special for a few families. Families that have housed instructors in the past have felt that it was a great experience. We are pleased to announce the sailing/swimming instructors for this year s program. We have a great staff assembled that is eager to start the summer season. 5 Race Committee Jamboree Saturday, May 10th, 9:30 3pm Attention all HYC race officers, mark boat staff, all support members and wannabes In other words YOU! Mark your calendar for the 2nd Annual Race Committee Jamboree to be held on Saturday, May 10, This year s program will be different from last year s, with a focus on our local area racing events and separate break out sessions for race officers and mark boat support personnel. This year, we are planning to spend more time on the water setting up and managing an actual race course. Tom Duggan, our local race guru, will be our teacher and has insisted that after a full day of fun and information, a cocktail party and cash bar around 4:00pm is a must. Our day will begin at 9:30am with coffee and doughnuts during registration. The Club will provide lunch, courtesy of the Race Programs. This is a free event but registration is required. Register today online at or call (508) ~ The HYC Race Committee It s Time to Think Summer!!! From the Scrapbook, Photo Album, and Historical Committee: What is the date the Hyannis Yacht Club was founded? Who were our founding members? Where was the Club located in those early days? There is a lot of history surrounding the Hyannis Yacht Club, and it s important to preserve this information for the generations to come! With that in mind, a group of members have gotten together to gather Club photos, newspaper articles, and other memorabilia so all the information can be catalogued. We believe this is a perpetual committee whose work will continue long after most of us are gone, but we also know that now is the time to begin. Most of the Club s memorabilia is located in the attics and basements of some of our long-time members. We also know that an oral history of the Club is also important and would like to record some of your recollections. This is a huge project, and to accomplish this we need your help. A photo and scrapbook party is scheduled at the Club on Sunday, April 20th at 3:00pm. All members are welcome to attend and to bring any old stuff you have. Don t worry, we will make copies of those items you would like returned to you. Of course in true HYC fashion, the cash bar will be open for your pleasure and enjoyment, as we raise a glass to the good old days, review memorabilia, swap old stories and share memories. If you can t make this party, there will be more opportunities to come. So get into the historical spirit, dig around in those attics and basements, and share our enthusiasm in preserving our HYC history for posterity. ~ Joe Hoffman It s time to register for dinghy dock storage and small boat storage. This year it s easy to do. Just log onto our website at click onto the yacht & waterfront tab. On the left side of the screen click onto the waterfront tab which will bring you to the waterfront home page. From there, select the storage form you will need on the right side of the page. Once it is completed, Dean will get your information. 5

6 Sailors in the News Richardson Rolls On at Acura Miami Grand Prix Regatta Six weeks after winning the ultra-competitive Farr 40 Class, along with Boat of the Week honors at Acura Key West 2008, Jim Richardson removed another monkey from his back by repeating both honors at Acura Miami Grand Prix Regatta, held March 6-9, in a variety of wind and sea conditions off the coast of Miami. According to the regatta website, Although all four classes were hotly contested throughout the regatta ultimately, the three-part criteria that officials with Premiere Racing use to select the Acura Trophy winner favored the Farr 40 Barking Mad, owned by HYC member Jim Richardson of Newport, R.I., who won three of 10 races and overcame some double-digit results to capture what proved to be the closest, most competitive class at Acura Miami Grand Prix. Barking Mad was one of three entries to hold the daily lead in the 28-boat class. Richardson s team was second after day 1, fell to fifth after day 2 then regained the overall lead after day 3. Barking Mad had to work right up until the bitter end to hold that lead, clawing its way back from 25th to 17th in the last race in order to secure a four-point victory over Mascalzone Latino. Warpath, sailed by the father-son team of Fred and Steve Howe, took third just one point behind Mascalzone. Richardson and his Barking Mad crew won all three winter regattas in the Farr 40 class (the first was the Farr 40 10th Anniversary Regatta held in Florida in late November), earning them the Baxter Trophy, as well as the 2008 Acura Grand Prix Championship, which goes to the boat with the best combined score at the two international events organized by Premiere Racing. We have been on a bit of a roll and hopefully it will continue through the Worlds, said Richardson, referring to the Farr 40 World Championship, to be held off Miami in mid-april. I ve been second in Key West and Miami several times so this is a bit of vindication. We ve been knocking on the door so it feels good to finally open it and walk in.
