Hyannis Yacht Club Organized 1927 Commodore s Report Let s All Celebrate! Congratulations to the members of our Board of Trustees, committee chairs and members, event volunteers, management team and staff on a fabulous month! All of the energy dedicated to planning and running the various events contributed to a fun-filled month of activities enjoyed by many of our members. Our Youth Program participants have two weeks left in their summer program. The time has flown by! Our sailors and swimmers have done very well; the program directors have done a fabulous job coordinating and staffing the many events both at our Club and at the various SMSA clubs that have hosted regattas for our youth sailors. Our coaches this year are superb; they are incredibly dedicated to the safety and success of our program participants. Their commitment to our sailors and swimmers goes way beyond monetary compensation; and we notice and appreciate their support of our children! Focusing attention on our youth sailors fulfills our Club s mission and sustains our membership. Last month, the Board of Trustees approved the development of the Hyannis Junior Yacht Club. Congratulations to Eleanor Conroy for initiating the idea and to Mary Kate Mezzetti for supporting the initial planning. With the support of Wes Richardson and Ellen Zavatsky, they have worked diligently to build the foundation for this initiative. Several activities have been planned for this year, and we will continue to support the junior yacht club s development during the upcoming year. (Continued on Page 2) The Telltale August 2008 It s The No Theme Party! 2 The Telltale Commodore s Report continued. The two parties hosted by our Entertainment Committee in July continued this year s tradition of unique, fun-filled themes enjoyed by the members who attend. The Mexican Fiesta was fabulous; we ve all enjoyed the infamous Oasis Machine and the many frozen concoctions served! The Fourth of July weekend, including the trophy races, Family Day Race, boat parade, beach and water activities, and the barbecue was terrific. The only damper was the weather; congratulations to our members on not letting Mother Nature spoil our fun! The odds are with us that next year we ll actually see and hear the town s fireworks display! Our Ocean Race Committee continues to host the Wednesday night Beer Can series sponsored by Harpoon Ale. This series is the most popular for our big boat sailors. Congratulations to the committee on the safe completion of the Race Around the Cape! Parents of Optimist and 420 sailors, if you are not here on mornings, you are missing one of the best kept secrets of our Club! The One Design morning races are a great way for our young sailors to practice their skill development. Our Youth Program coaches join us to help further our sailors knowledge. The races are highly organized and well run by the outstanding team of Lisa Maclean and Neil Murray. Breakfast on the patio prior to the races is a fun social event that helps build camaraderie amongst our sailors and parents. It s not too late to join this wonderful part of our One Design program! As we go to press this month, our Regatta Committee is putting the finishing touches on the plans for our annual regatta. Thanks to Rob Tucker, Melissa St.Onge, co-chairs, and Charlie Cooper, Senior Race Officer, for all of your work to pull this event together! While our members enjoy the Club and all it has to offer, the Renovations Committee continues to meet weekly to forge ahead with our downstairs clubhouse building project. Stay tuned to future Telltales for updates on the committee s exciting work! Enjoy the final month of the summer season and all it has to offer. Thanks to all of our committee chairs, member volunteers, management team, and staff for your commitment to the success of the myriad of activities offered so far. Your dedication is appreciated immensely by all the members who are enjoying the summer season at our Club! ~ Emily Mezzetti Ocean Race Update It s August! Can you believe we ve 2 months of Wednesday night races under our belts and have only 4 nights of racing left? We had good weather for the Race Around the Cape and finished the weekend with a great time at the clambake on the Captain s Table deck. Thanks to Wes and his staff for a great meal. Thanks also to all the volunteers who helped make this event possible. It s a lot of work to write, review and revise the Sailing Instructions, take registrations, do the scoring, and man those long shifts at RAC Headquarters at the Club. Most of all, thanks to Dick Fleming, who was the Principal Race Officer again this year, and did a fantastic job. Mark your calendar for August 9th & 10th and register online at for the Tarpaulin Cove Regatta. We will race to Tarpaulin Cove on Saturday, enjoy the company of the folks on the HYC cruise, and then race back to the Club on. Hopefully some of the cruisers will join in the race back! Remember, we can always use a helping hand on mark, patrol, or committee boats for the Wednesday nights or weekend races. Please call me we can always use an extra pair of hands and it s a fun time! See you all soon Lincoln Baxter on behalf of the Ocean Race Committee Smoking at HYC Members, guests, and staff members are asked to remember that smoking is prohibited at all times in all enclosed facilities without exception. This includes common work areas, conference and meeting rooms, restrooms, the kitchen and restaurant, and all other enclosed facilities. Smoking is also prohibited in HYC vehicles. Individuals who choose to smoke outside should maintain a distance of 15 feet from any building opening and should refrain from smoking upwind of others. All cigarette butts should be disposed of in ashtrays and not left on the beach, dock or patio. 2
The Telltale Hyannis Junior Yacht Club Established Members of the Youth Program asked to start a Junior Yacht Club and after careful review the Board of Trustees has granted approval. Below are some of the key elements of the plan. Governance A Trustee will be assigned as liaison to the HYC Board. The Youth Committee would nominate an adult advisor who would be responsible for ensuring that established guidelines are followed. Creating the Club The JYC is currently working to create bylaws and a mission statement. Officers were appointed for this first year with election of officers required in subsequent years appointments: Commodore Eleanor Conroy Vice Commodore Mary Kate Mezzetti Rear Commodore Chase Quinn Secretary/Treasurer Hannah Howard House Committee Chair Sarah White Entertainment Committee Chair Ali Gorin The JYC is open to all members of the Youth Program between the ages of 10 and 18. (The person would be that age during the calendar year.) Cost of membership is $10 This idea was spearheaded by Eleanor Conroy and she, along with Mary Kate Mezzetti, have worked hard to present a viable plan to the Youth Committee. We are excited to see the enthusiasm that so many members of the Youth Program have for the JYC. They plan to host events, help around the Club, and perform some community service. Look for additional information in future Telltales. Congratulations to all that worked to make this happen!
General Manager s Report Every now and then something happens that prompts a restatement of one or more of the Club s policies. This year is no different so it would be good to review several situations that have recently arisen. First Policy: No member or guest shall bring outside source alcoholic beverages into the Club. The only exception is to transport such alcoholic beverages to one s boat. Consumption of alcoholic beverages is prohibited on the beach and Club launches. For purposes of these rules Club shall mean the clubhouse, beach, docks, mooring area, local property, furnishings, equipment and stock. Unfortunately members and their guests occasionally bring coolers to the beach or bring drinks from their boats onto the dock or patio. These practices could result in the loss of the Club s liquor license. To clarify, members are allowed to drink their own liquor on their Sail Program Update The HYC Youth Sailing Program is enjoying one of its best summers to date. The 2008 sailing staff is made up of two veterans of too many years to count, former participants in the program and college sailors from Eckerd, Tufts, Roger Williams and U-Mass/Amherst. Our sailors are having fun while messing about in boats and developing the skills to make them great competitive sailors or just lifelong sailors. I welcome you to keep up to date with our daily activities by reading our blog available at: blogspot.com or about the race team results at: www. hycraceteam.blogspot.com. It is updated almost every day and there are great pictures posted there as well. boat but in all other locations they are permitted to drink only liquor purchased at the Club s bar. Second Policy: All complaints, suggestions and requests shall be made in writing, dated, and signed, and directed to the General Manager or the Board of Trustees. On several occasions members have taken their complaints directly to a staff member and have done so in a very aggressive manner. It s important to remember that the HYC team is here to help and the decisions that we make we deem to be the best in any given situation. If a member feels that one of our staff is making the wrong decision it is imperative that they bring it to the attention of the General Manager. We do welcome and solicit feedback that will improve the Club but ask that it be done in a civil manner through the proper channels. Common sense and consideration of the Club, the staff, and one s fellow members should be the governing rule. Thanks and enjoy a great summer! ~ Wes Richardson Congratulations to Skipper Dan Sexton and Crew Hayley Morse for their 3rd place finish on the 420 line at the Edgartown Regatta and to Chase Quinn for his 2nd place finish on the Opti Championship line. These are just two notable results thus far this summer. Both the 420 Race Team and the Opti Race Teams have had an amazing summer and we are looking forward to more great results. Sail Fast, Deb Newson Sail Program Director 4
The Telltale Youth Award & Dance August 15, 2008 August 15th marks the end of another great season for our swimming and sailing program. Please come and celebrate the achievements of our children, followed by the traditional last dance of the summer. Parents Buffet Romaine salad with creamy garlic dressing and aged parmesan reggiano Slow roasted sole with coconut rum butter and wild rice Sautéed chicken breast with roasted tomatoes and basil butter served over penne pasta Roasted seasonal vegetables Warm apple crisp with fresh whipped cream $14.99 plus tax and gratuity Please reserve your place today by calling (508) or online at (All reservations must be placed before August 13th).
The Telltale Swim Program Update The beach is brimming with activity this summer. The HYC swimming program s reputation for topquality, consistent and fun lessons is spreading. We have almost 50 swimmers under the age of 7 in our beginner classes! Many of these little ones had parents in the program. It s great to see the love for the Hyannis Yacht Club swimming and sailing program continue through the generations! We have many grandparents sitting on the deck celebrating the progress of their beginning swimmers! It is not only the beginner classes that are full. There seems to always be children in the water swimming laps, playing in the crib or digging in the sand. The older swimmers are working hard learning new strokes and perfecting the ones they already know. The swimmers in the instructor training class are learning to write lesson plans and teach a class. The hours they volunteer over the summer are invaluable. They are helping us maintain a small instructor-swimmer ratio. The HYC swim team began the season with a taco and tiedye party. The tie-dyed t-shirts look great! A special thanks goes to Beth Smith for designing and printing the swim team logo on the front of the shirts and the children s initials on the sleeves. The team looks as good in the water as they do on land in their team suits and shirts. We are undefeated and will probably remain so this summer. We have over 50 members on the team so we are definitely a force to be reckoned with. The swimmers love wearing flippers in practice to help work on their strokes and strengthen their leg muscles. Everyone is looking forward to the 2nd annual Swim Team Sleepover at the end of July! As we travel to other clubs for meets, we are so thankful for the wonderful facilities we have here at the Cub. We have the most lanes and the best place to hold a meet and to run practices. Jared and the dock staff have done an outstanding job maintaining the swim floats and lifeguard equipment. The instructors, staff, and facilities make the HYC Swim Program the best on the Cape! Pam Nothacker Swim Program Director Hyannis Yacht Club Youth Invitational Thursday, August 7, 2008 NO WALK IN REGISTRATIONS ALLOWED Register online at click onto the yachting & waterfront home page, from the left menu click on the Youth Invitation tab and the registration info is on the right side of the page.
