The Main Sheet What s going on? May 2009 April has been a really busy month with the start of our sailing season, social activities thriving and the birth of 4 new juniors who will no doubt be seen sailing at DBSC in years to come. Congratulations to: Mark & Heloise Maylin on the birth of their new crew members Oliver and Adam (7 th April). My wife, Kat who gave birth to our son Angus (11 th April). Last but not least, James & Johanna Urquhart on the birth of Struan (17 th April). I would like to thank Fraser Harrison and Stuart Moss for stepping in to do my OOD duties and host the Commodore s Supper. There was me thinking I was being clever by organising my duties two weeks before Angus was due so that I could concentrate on getting him sailing later in the year, the best laid plans! My apologies to Mike Dalrymple who printed off the quiz sheets for the Commodore s Supper, only to be told a short time after that the title had just changed to Vice Commodore s Supper. It is good to keep the Quizmaster on his toes. Angus would like to say a massive thank you for those in attendance at the supper who contributed to allow him to start his first bank account, Andy and Kat would like to extend their gratitude for this kind gesture. Sailing was kicked off well at the brass monkey. I am pleased to report that the weather was excellent and having seen the photos I was pleased to see such a great start to our season. The second day of sailing also saw the Easter party in the clubhouse which was enjoyed by all on yet again another fantastic day. I understand that the Easter Binny was well behaved and entertained the masses. By the time you read this, preparations for our Annual Regatta will be in full swing, I hope that many of you will be taking advantage of such a great event at your home club by taking part to boost skills, gain experience or just enjoy the feel of the event by helping out to keep the high standard which has been set in previous years. Some of the latest high- lights which you can read about in the minutes of the committee meetings Heriot Watt Affiliation Scouts Affiliation Cash Handling Procedures for Membership Renewals Sponsorship of the Annual Regatta Damaged Sewage pipe required clean up and repair cost set at 120 for 2009 May I sign off by thanking all who have continued to approach me and fellow Management Committee members to offer your support and encouragement for all the communications in recent publications, the s which have been circulated and for reenforcing that the happy family atmosphere is thriving at our club. I hope to see as many of you as possible at our special Saturdays where we can enjoy fun frolics, BBQ s and entertainment after sailing. Check out the sailing calendar for details. The sailing has started well, with some great weather and good turn-outs. The new mark positions seem to be working pretty well to produce interesting courses for everyone, with good reaches for the symmetric boats; longer/ truer beats/ runs for the asymmetrics; and courses for the Novices & Juniors. Our sailing steps-up a gear at this time of year, with new series starting so make sure you are in from the start. The main sailing events for the next month are as follows: 15/16 May Sat & Sun DBSC Regatta more volunteers required 20 May Wednesday Dinghy Wed 1st Series 3 23/24 May Sat & Sun Family Fun Weekend 24 May Sunday Dinghy Sunday am Series 2 Dinghy Sunday Warm Up 2 29 May Friday Keelboat 1st Series 3 3 June Wednesday Dinghy Wed 1st Series 5 5 June Friday Keelboat 1st Series 4 7 June Sunday Dinghy Sunday am Series 4 Round St Davids Pole Combined Dinghy Keelboat DBSC Gavin Adamson FIG 10 June Wednesday Dinghy Wed 1st Series 6 12 June Friday Keelboat 1st Series 5 13 June Saturday Pursuit Race (dinghies & keelboats) 14 June Sunday Dinghy Sunday am Series 5 Dinghy Sunday Warm Up 4 More info at:

Page 3 The Main Sheet Early Bird Series 2009 The Early Bird Series got off to a great start on the 12th April with warm sunshine and light winds. Good weather greeted us again on the 19th but it turned colder for last week and the South-Westerly increased during the afternoon to make conditions difficult for the 2nd race. Only 3 boats managed to complete the race with 7 retiring. As I write this we have had 6 races so far with the last 2 to be sailed on the 3rd May. It has been good to see a healthy turnout in the Novice Class so early in the season and we will publish their results on the website as soon as we can. Laura Spacey, Emily McCreadie, Alistair Higgins, Alisdair B, Rachael Bottom and N. Heron have sailed in the two races so far. Laura won the first race with Rachael second and Alasdair B. third. In the second race N. Heron won with Rachael second while Laura retired after 2 laps. The Handicap and Asymmetric Class results are up to date however and a total of 30 boats have already competed Newcomer Chris Jeffries is leading the way in the Handicap Class sailing his bigger 8.1 rig Laser with Gordon Bissett (Laser) and John Wilson (RS300) close behind. John is another newcomer to the Club having previously sailed at Prestwick and is already showing that he will be a contender for some silverware. He would have had more points but being unfamiliar with our courses went the wrong way in the first race. Finn sailors Rhodri Thomas and Chris Farrell have also made a good start with 3 wins between them. In the Asymmetric Class Ian Renilson (Musto Skiff) is top man so far with Dave Burnett (RS K6) in second. Chris Morgan has had a good start in his Musto Skiff and will no doubt improve quickly as he gets used to it. The Musto s have also been boosted by the appearance of Peter Collings from Port Edgar. The 1st Wednesday Series starts on the 6th May with a combined Dinghy/Keelboat Regatta on Saturday 9th and two new Sunday series on the 10th. Come along and join the fun! Scott Hyslop The results are on DBSC Web Site at: Strangford Yacht Club2008 From Kenny Allan

The Main Sheet Page 4 DBSC Regatta 2009 The annual Dalgety Bay Sailing Club Regatta takes place this coming weekend (16th and 17th May) and we are expecting a good turn out. This is one of the highlights of the season and should be great fun for sailors and landlubbers alike. Even if you don t sail, you can volunteer for shore based duties and get a real feel for the excitement, joining later in the post sailing social. Registration on Saturday is from 0930h to 1145h and on Sunday from 0800h to 0900h. The first day briefing will take place at 1145h. It is anticipated that the first signal on Saturday will be at 1257h and on Sunday at 1027h. A tally system will be in operation for safety reasons. These photos come from past regattas. Even if you don t sail, you can volunteer for shore based duties and get a real feel for the excitement

Page 5 The Main Sheet Social by Sandy McPhail As we move into the sailing season proper, social events tend to be linked to sailing events. The post sailing festivities associated with the annual regatta are, of course, one of the highlights of the year and even if you are not participating in the sailing events everyone to welcome to join in. Junior Round-Up Laura's Sail around Inch Colme Island was a great success. Along with Laura, Louis Clark, Emily McCredie and Cameron Coull came along to give her their support. Laura was very pleased at the number of people who sponsored her, she raised in total 273 for Cancer Research UK. Thank you also to Calum Key And Iain Lucas for providing the fuel needed for the rescue cover. Junior Rep Ian Key In the past month or so, the stand out of the social calendar was the Easter Sunday Extravaganza. A great family day out combined traditional egg painting and egg rolling with many other fun events including the appearance of the Easter Binnie, captured right. We are always on the look out for ideas for social events. Contact: Laura was very pleased at the number of people who sponsored her, she raised in total 273 for Cancer Research UK

The Main Sheet Page 6 Communications by Clive Franks I must confess that when I put myself forward for election as Marketing Officer I had read an out-of-date job specification: years ago we used to have a Press & Publicity Officer, but his job spec has now become absorbed into the marketing role and the task of "communications" (which is pretty wide!) has also been added. All in all, this makes for quite a big job! I think the communications part of the task is reasonably well in hand now. With the assistance formerly of James, and now of Mike, we are getting a reasonably packed and informative Mainsheet out to the membership on a regular basis. Mike is continually updating the website, and in the background continues with his plans for an entirely new website, which it is hoped will be delivered later in the year. (This is a very big task, so please bear with us, volunteers to help would be good, particularly if you know your way round databases and php). As I have said before, if you have any advertisement, pictures, article or comment please pass them to me at marketing@dalgetybaysc.org and I will make every use that I can of it, either on the website or in the Mainsheet or both. You will now have received your new Membership Cards, and Handbook. I hope that 2009 Regatta Liz Tulloch will be attending the event, for Yachting Life, and this year we have managed to get the Dunfermline Press to commit both a reporter and a cameraman the Handbook is up to scratch. Because of the present budgetary constraints the same format has been used for previous years, but now the Handbook has been delivered we will start to look around to see what can be done to make it more glossy/professional for future years. As you know, sponsorship has not only been committed but been actually ingathered for the Regatta. As I understand it, Liz Tulloch will be attending the event, for Yachting Life, and this year we have managed to get the Dunfermline Press to commit both a reporter and a cameraman. I dare say that the reporter expects to wander down and interview the Commodore or someone, whilst his cameraman takes a couple of shots from the shore. If that is the case, they are both in for a surprise! The intention is to hijack them both, fill them full of bacon rolls, give them the deluxe tour of the Club and our facilities, and them jam them into a set of oilies and get them out on the water in the RIB, probably to Forth Voyager, so they can see the excitement of the activity on the water at first hand. I am hoping to get not just a couple of piccies and a brief write-up, but an entire page spread! Last year, the Management Committee was without a Marketing Officer for much of the year, and clearly the various functions normally carried out by the Marketing Officer suffered as a re-

Page 7 The Main Sheet Communications (cont) 100 Club: April Draw The April winners are as follows: First: Robert Beattie: Second: Cheryl Taylor: Third: Ian Hill: 5.00 Congratulations to the Prize Guys sult. Concerns were eloquently voiced at the AGM about poor communications. With the very great assistance of James (who, although having stood down as Mainsheet Editor, continues to be of assistance in the background) and Mike (without whose help I could not function!) I hope that you are seeing that this year's Management Committee is doing its very best to deliver better communications, primarily in the form of the Mainsheet and the website, better press and publicity, with regular articles appearing in the Diary, and get- ting and getting Yachting Life and Dunfermline Press interested in the Regatta, and in the marketing role, we have thus far at least matched last year's income with regard to Regatta sponsorship and advertising revenues per the Handbook. On all fronts there is more to do, but I hope the membership appreciates the steps that the Management Committee is striving to take to improve and increase the Club's facilities and resources. Clive Dutyman Rota System Please make sure you have checked your dutyman allocation at: If the duties are shared between everyone we can all maximise our time on the water. If you haven't received a Dutyman invitation to choose dates especially if it is your first year so you are not registered please contact me. Don t worry about doing duties just ask and you will get plenty of help. 8 The Main Sheet Page 8 Training by Gill Wright TUESDAY TRAINING IS FULL and overflowing! Thanks to everyone for their patience on Tuesday night. We ve filled up all our places and have waiting lists for each of the groups. I look forward to seeing everyone out on the water. I m sorry there were so many who went home disappointed having not got a place. I ll continue to review the places and set up and see what further opportunities we can offer. LOOKING FOR KID S SAILING KIT?... HAVING A CLEAR OUT?? We ll facilitate a secondhand box this year. If your kids have outgrown their wetsuits or other sailing kit (and its still usable) bring it along on a Tuesday night with an idea of how much you re looking to sell it for. We ll take some details, tag up the items and contact you when they are sold. Likewise, if you re looking to buy some kit, have a look at what s available first. YOUTH WEEK 3-7 August 2009 Registration forms are available and flying out the door. Contact training@dalgetybaysc.org to get a hold of yours. We ll also be running a summer school this year with the RYA. There ll be stage 1 courses for juniors who are new to sailing, run over 5 mornings OR 5 afternoons. Please contact me for more details. Gill Wright Rear Commodore Training rearcommodoretraining@dalgetybaysc.org If your kids have outgrown their wetsuits or other sailing kit (and its still usable) bring it along on a Tuesday night FAMILY FUN WEEKEND May Look out your eye patches, hooks and other pirate paraphernalia. This year we have a theme for the fun weekend and you guessed its Pirates!! There s fun and games on and off the water, a treasure hunt, a disco as well as lots of other things. Come along and join in the fun.

Page 9 The Main Sheet Radiation, An Update by Stewart Moss A brief update on the present situation relating to the Radium contamination of the foreshore around the sailing club. It is believed that the contamination is being eroded from the foreshore in front of the clubhouse, The current is then moving the particles eastwards, they are becoming trapped between the clubs slipways and then eventually distributed along the rest of the shore. The adjacent SEPA graphic indicates that our slipways are showing the greatest population of contaminant. The MOD has appointed a company called EN- TEC as contractors to investigate. Their plan is to try to determine the movement of hotspots, either being washed in, or pulled up out of the beach. They plan to put "some form of membrane" over the area between the slipways. The nature of this membrane is yet to be determined (we have already suggested c o n c r e t e ) The MOD are required to come back with a proposal before May, but the likelihood of anything happening before the summer is probably slim. In the meantime signs have been placed around the affected area and DBSC has agreed to have signs placed in the clubs changing rooms. Dave Burnett will continue to liaise with all of the interested parties, MOD Entec SEPA EPA etc and that he is happy to be contacted by members should they want further information. I would like to stress to all members that this is not something new; rather this is the next phase of the ongoing investigations and cleanup, Sailing activities do not need to be reduced OR altered so don t Panic If you would like more information please see the SEPA website uk/sepa?action=search &q=dalgety%20bay

The Main Sheet Page 10 Classes Corner Sonata Hi, I'm Neil McLure and I have owned half of a Sonata called "So" for 10 years now. From 3.5k to 6.5k they are a fantastic price for a keelboat you can race or cruise and have lots of fun. I have towed mine all over the country to race from Cowes to Tay week and I have even cruised it up the west coast of Scotland with my wife. The Sonata class at Dalgety Bay have lots of fun at the club and sometimes away from the club and we often have socials and special events as well as taking a full part in the club racing - in particular Friday nights. Please come and try us out. You will be welcome on any boat whether you are a complete novice or Ben Ainslie looking for some real action! Contact me and I'll sort it out for you. Look forward to seeing you. Neil McLure Sonata Class Captain - sonata@dalgetybaysc.org Dalgety Bay Sailing Club The Wynd Dalgety Bay Fife KY11 9SJ Laser Neil & his team in action at Abersoch Phone: info@dalgetybaysc.org Laser sailors have been out in force at club racing since the beginning of the season. Well done the lasers! An average of 7 to 8 boats have been racing most weekends. A good number of sails from 4.7, Radial, Full, and the new Rooster 8.1 rig has made racing very exciting. Lighter nights and good weather is coming so hoping to encourage more laser sailors on water and maybe reach double figures. Had a walk around dinghy park and there must be at least 27 laser dinghies at Dalgety Bay. Would be great to get as many as possible on water at club events. Anyone looking for training events or social, your requests and we will see what can be arranged. Brian Greer Laser Class Captain - laser@dalgetybaysc.org
