2 Fleet 204 Meeting Minutes April 8, 2014 Respectfully submitted by Pattie Krupke, Co-Secretary 204 Play May 2014 Newsletter The meeting called to order at 7:30 pm at Borio s Restaurant back room by Commodore Therese Straigis. She welcomed everyone to the meeting. There were 23 members as well as all Fleet officers in attendance. Commodore Straigis asked for a moment of silence for our friend Bob Burns who passed away. She also mentioned Hobie Alter, inventor of our sport passed away as well. Commodore Straigis then asked for the Secretary s report. Co-Secretary Bruce Krupke reported his co-secretary and better half provided the minutes from our March Fleet meeting. They were ed to Fluffy White and were printed in the newsletter by Publisher Donna Wilson. Bruce said the attendance at Fleet meetings seems to be growing! There was a motion to dispense with the reading of the minutes, seconded, carried. Treasurer s Report: Treasurer Dr. Bill Whalen reported our finances are in really good condition. He gave one and final notice that your annual Fleet 204 membership due are DUE. After the next meeting they will be overdue and if you haven t paid by May you won t get all the benefits of membership after that point in time don t delay, cough it up ($50) and pay today. There was a motion to accept the report, seconded, carried. Division 16 Report: Adam Atherton, Division chairman, reported that the racing schedule has been updated and is on our Fleet website (and on the first page of this newsletter!). There was a lot of work that went into getting all these regatta races set up and scheduled. Please look over the schedule and try to get to as many of the regattas as you can. Plan, carpool, double, triple stack, and pack up the kids! Out of town regattas are fun and give you even more experience on the water while making new sailing friends around the country. Adam reported that Madcatter 38 is the first major Division 16 regatta of the season. Oswego s new regatta will be the last weekend in June. There might be some minor conflicts for the (what hopes to be an annual) Oswego regatta that were discussed. It has to be promoted at Madcatter and is a Hobie only race. Adam is waiting for more info from the Oswego Yacht Club organizers. Toronto will host only one regatta this year. The annual Etobicoke regatta will not happen this year. Water Rats regatta will happen in early August. Some Fleet members attended last year and said they are trying to grow their event. It is a venue which features the big Toronto skyline while on the water. Plan on attending! The annual Canandaigua Yacht Club regatta has moved up their regatta a week earlier than was scheduled, it will now take place on Sept. 13 and 14th! Division 11 has some races earlier in the season that also listed on our racing tab on our website. 2

Winds were good and temperatures moderate, (warmer than our usual Madcatter)! The food was very good, sandy beach, lots of room and a great job was done by the PRO Mark Santorelli.

Chalk Talk A Chalk talk was held at the Rob and Darcie Jerry s house. A lot of Fleet members were in attendance.

3 204 Play May 2014 Newsletter Past Regatta Report: Hobie Cat Midwinter s east report. Two Fleet teams participated in this year s Midwinter s East sailing regatta held in Ocean Springs, MS. Bill Jeffers and Karen Grisko took 2nd place; Bruce Krupke and Dr. Bill Whalen took 6th place. There were 13 Hobie 16s. Dan Borg and crew took first place. There were 10 races over the 3 day race. Winds were good and temperatures moderate, (warmer than our usual Madcatter)! The food was very good, sandy beach, lots of room and a great job was done by the PRO Mark Santorelli. Mark held a dedication on the water to Hobie Alter before the start of the racing. It is not clear yet if Ocean Springs Yacht Club will host the 2015 MWE. Chalk Talk A Chalk talk was held at the Rob and Darcie Jerry s house. A lot of Fleet members were in attendance. There were a good number of topics discussed including covering your competition during a race and starts. The next one will be held at Adam Atherton s house on April 16 starting at 6:30pm. Everyone is invited to all chalk talks, watch the Forum. Post on the Forum if you have a chalk talk topic suggestion. Future Regatta Report All of the year s regattas are now scheduled. Please look at the racing tab on our Website for all the races. There was talk about having a sailing day at Owasco Yacht Club in September. It was also discussed to have a sailing trip to another venue, not to race, just explore. Bruce reported Come sail with us Day will be held Sat. June 14th at Therre s Marina. Mark it down on your schedule to volunteer and participate. There will be more discussion about this event at our next meeting. Vice Commodore Herb James reported Lake Shore CC approached him and asked if we would be willing to sponsor a sailing day for their club as well. The dates would be in early July. It would be run from their beach area. We could coordinate it on their Fireworks Day. There were good discussions. The Pros are potentially more people would be interested in sailing in the future and good new ties with the Club. It would be Sat. July 5th or Sunday the 6th. Volunteers will be needed, Herb will report back at the next meeting. Pending Business: Commodore Straigis reported Onondaga County Parks has issued the final price of $1,475 to use the Park for Madcatter. This is $925 more than last year. It was discussed the Fleet was not happy with the increased price. There was concern the price could be increased even more in There will be more discussion regarding use of Oneida Shores County Park for Madcatter 3

4 204 Play May 2014 Newsletter at future meetings. The NE championships were designated for Madcatter, but we did not get the sponsorship money mainly because we are allowing F18s to participate. This is a loss of $1000. Although it was discussed with the addition of F18 at Madcatter, the registrations from teams participating should help bring in revenue to offset the NE money. Commodore Straigis provided a report on Madcatter Committees (see list, later in the newsletter). She said all committees have people in charge. All responsibilities are being handled and taken care of. She thanked everyone again for a great job to help make Madcatter 38 a success. There was discussion about having a professional photographer take pictures at Madcatter. The cost would be $200. There was a suggestion by Herb to ask Richard White who took pictures last year to do it again this year. He ll try to find out before the next meeting. Bruce reported sponsorships are coming in, slowly. We need to get as many sponsors as we can. If you know of someone who can be a sponsor, sign them up. If you need forms they are on the website. If you have any items that can be put in a givie bag please contact Kathy Miles asap. Herb reported he could use two more jumpers on chase boats. If anyone wants to help out, contact Herb James. He also reported we need one more chase motor boat. A reminder, this year s theme for Madcatter is Hawaiian! We ll have a pig roast on Saturday night, wear your favorite Hawaiian shirt, Luau here we come! A memorial sticker for Bob Burns and Hobie Alter was discussed. Rob will handle designing the sticker for Bob Burns. We will also have a commemorative page in the Madcatter race program booklet. Adam will handle it. Social Report: There were some domino nights along with Chalk talk and getting ready for the racing season event reported. Next social most likely will be July 4th! New Other Business: Rob reported he has a used set of beach wheels for sale, Rich McVeigh is selling his. Gustavo and Rob are getting ready to launch a Hobie data base. They ll be launching it at Madcatter, watch for it! Fire Dept. Training to help with Hobie sailors that are capsized and right their boats will take place sometime this summer. Gary Repko will coordinate the time and date with the South Bay Fire Department and report back. Bob Longo reported he will host a SU Sailing Team day on Saturday May 3, out of Therre s marina. He needs skippers to participate. Please watch the Forum for more details. There will be more discussion about having a Borio s sponsorship night this summer where we set up a boat on a Thursday and talk to patrons about our sport at a future meeting. There was no other business and there was a motion to adjourn, seconded carried. 4
