2 Page 2 Vice Commodore Barbara Schindler Thunderbird Sailing Club has many talented sailors as members. So take the following quiz to see if you can guess who our guest speaker will be at the March meeting. Remember no peeking. Hi All, Treasurer Dave Craigie DUES DUES.DUES.DUES Who holds a level 1 sailing instructor s certificate from US Sailing? Who holds a Masters License for both Steam and Sail with Commercial Towing from the US Coast Guard? Who has sailed as skipper and navigator on sailing vessels in the Northeast, South, Southeast, Bahamas, and BVI s? Who is a member of the Norman Sail and Power Squadron? Who has completed all the piloting and navigation courses except Advanced Celestial Navigation.? Who has held many governance positions in TSC including Commodore more than once? If you guessed BARBARA SCHINDLER, you are absolutely wrong, but if your guess is ROGER ELLI- OTT, you are correct. Roger has had many adventures in his twenty years of sailing. Some of these on blue water cruises. His presentation will introduce the audience to coastal navigation. An important element of coastal navigation is the Global Positioning System (GPS). Roger will demonstrate the use of GPS and discuss its importance in coastal navigation. Feel free to bring your coastal charts, GPS devices, and your questions with you! 4 LAKE THUNDERBIRD EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION Roger Elliott I am pleased to report that the first annual Lake Thunderbird Educational Foundation Old Timers/Cruisers Dinner was held on Saturday evening February 25, 2006 at the Boat- House. The event brought together many of the guys who went on those early cruises to the Chesapeake Bay, Bahamas, BVI s and elsewhere. Several tapes of the trips were played during the evening and brought back many fond and unforgettable memories. It s also amazing how young many of those folks looked some ten years ago! Roger and Cheri, Phil and Cathy, and Les and Barbara provided the steaks and seafood, salads, and deserts for the evening. The dinner raised over $500 for the LTEF! Thanks to all who were present. We hope to do similar fundraisers a couple times a year. If you have ideas, please let me know. LAKE THUNDERBIRD EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION Les Cummings Although it is supposed to be our off-season, it remains very busy for members of the LTEF and the BoatHouse Management Committee. Recent developments include the following: Boatyard addition completed, thanks to George Skinner our County Commissioner and his staff and many volunteers from the BoatHouse consortium. Sand excavation project completed thanks to Chad Cox, U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, Oklahoma State Parks, U.S. Corps of Engineers, and Susan Hendon. The actual excavation was completed by the Oklahoma Master Conservancy and we thank Rick Gates and his staff along with Walt Hedrick, Conservancy board president. The new Mercury Outboard will be shipped out within two weeks. The management committee has approved the purchase of a new safety boat and trailer to go with the new engine. House Bill 2798, authored by Rep. Bill Nations has passed unanimously in the Revenue and Taxation Committee of the House. Senator Cal Hobson is the Senate author of the bill which will be heard soon. The bill will provide all 501 (3) non-profits supporting boating safety, sailing, and fishing programs with the same registration discounts as the Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Campfire Girls, and K-12 and higher-ed schools. Boatlift to be installed on Saturday March 18. Help!!! BOATHOUSE AND THE GM JOB BANK NEARING PARTNERSHIP Thanks to the General Motors Job Bank, the Lake Thunderbird BoatHouse may have two full-time volunteers for the coming months. Rick Eager and Jack Thomas, both active sailors and boat owners at Lake Thunderbird, have volunteered their time in the GM Job Bank to work at the BoatHouse. Rick is the owner of the beautiful Catalina 30 INXS and is a member of the Thunderbird Sailing Club. Jack is the proud owner of the Beneteau Oceanis 281 IRIE and is an officer in the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, Flotilla Both Rick and Jack have their sailboats docked at Little River Marina. We will develop the work schedule with Rick and Jack in the near future and their help will be very much appreciated. Hopefully, we can get some weekend help too during our planned open hours and scheduled weekend events. Rick and Jack were both helpful in getting the LTEF and the BoatHouse on the list of approved non-profit agencies at General Motors. Les Cummings met with the Job Bank coordinators on Friday, March 10 and provided background information on the BoatHouse and its activities along with a detailed job description for the volunteers. We hope to hear back from the GM Job Bank in the near future. Thank you Rick, Jack, and the General Motors Job Bank!
6 Fire Safety Reminder E.D.I.T.H. Exit Drills In The Home Reprint provided courtesy of the Oklahoma City Fire Department Page 6 With spring cleaning right around the corner, it is a good time to review or plan your emergency/fire Exit Drills In The Home. Please review the following: FYI: In 2001 there were 383,500 home fires which resulted in 3,110 deaths, 15,200 injuries and 5.5 billion dollars in direct property damage. At least one home fire death occurs every 170 minutes. From half of the home fire deaths were from fires reported between 10PM to 6AM. But only one-fourth of home fires occur during these hours. 9% of the people in the Unites States are 5 years old or younger, however, they makeup 17% of home fire deaths. Adults 65 years of age or older face a risk twice as high as the national average. HOW TO SURVIVE A FIRE IN YOUR HOME: Make a plan: Draw a floor plan of your home, showing two ways out of every room. Practice with all members of your family. Crawl low under smoke: Heat and smoke rises, you must get out on your hands and knees. Always check doors before you open them. Meeting Place: A place where everyone knows to go. Far enough from the fire where you will be safe while waiting for the fire department to arrive. Trapped: If trapped, close doors, get to a window and try to signal for help. Get Out - Stay Out: Never go back in a burning building for your belongings or pets. When the firefighters arrive they will do that. CALL 911: Always call from outside your home, or maybe a neighbor s house. PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE SMOKE ALARMS SAVE LIVES! Why do you need a smoke alarm? Most fatal fires occur at night Smoke is the killer in most fires Your smoke alarm noise can alert you while there is time to escape Taking care of your alarm: Replace batteries according to the manufacturers recommendations or at least once a year Test your smoke alarm once a month using the test button Dust can damage your detectors sensitivity. Most units need to be cleaned once a year by dusting or vacuuming
7 AED Training a Shockingly Good Time Page 7 Several members of TSC received AED certification this month under the instruction of Jerry Lojka. The class was held at the Midwest City Fire Department where several students took advantage of break time to play on the firemen s slide and watch the fire trucks go out on calls (Does anyone actually outgrow the excitement of seeing a shiny fire engine with lights and siren??). As many know, an AED was recently purchased for the Boat- House (joint purchase by consortium partners), and this class provided training in the use of this equipment. Included was CPR recertification along with the new AED certification. Thanks to Les and Roger, the AED is well-equipped with a special razor for shaving chests before applying the paddles (men only?!). If you, too, want to be a certified chest shaver and shocker, be sure to enroll in the next offered AED class. Above left, Chad gives himself a heart-attack while giving rescue breaths to the dummy. On the right, Mike Klatt and Gray Graham prepare to bag and tag another victim. Seriously though, Jerry did a great job teaching the class and all the students recommend the course to others. On the right: Karen Thurston practices CPR at the recent class given at the Midwest City Fire Department. Sea Scouts attend CPR/AED Training On Saturday, March 4th eight Sea Scouts, Skipper Rick Shaw, and Howard Haines attended CPR/First Aid and AED training at the Midwest City Firehouse. The training was delivered by Jerry Lojka, the MWC Fire Marshal. Jordan Johnston, the Sea Scout Port-Crewleader was quoted as saying "now she feels more confident in being able to handle medical emergencies that might occur at home or on the lake." Skipper Rick is encouraging 100% of the Sea Scouts to be CPR/First Aid trained. Howard Haines along with Skipper Rick, Charity, Joycalyn, Raymond, Jordan, Juliet, Karen, Danielle and Kevin completed the training. Above, CPR/AED instructor, Jerry Lojka demonstrates the Heimlich maneuver on student Les Cummings Top row: Mike Klatt, Karen Thurston, Chad Cox. Bottom row: Roger Elliott, Gray Graham, Corbett Brown, and Les Cummings. All photos courtesy of Jerry Lojka Note: the first 20 volunteers that complete the CPR/ AED training will be given a Responder Kit Key Chain donated by Allied Medical Products. A picture of the key chain is shown above. Please contact Les Cummings to pick up yours! The recent sand excavation project is shown in the above photo taken by project chair Chad Cox. All we need now is about 4 feet of additional water in the lake!
