However, I understand that a need for volunteers, race participants, auction items and donations still exist. Contact Mary Anne at or m.secrist@sbcglobal.net if you want to get involved in this great event. Jim Waller reminds us that May 12 th is the BoatHouse work day. Please set aside that date on your calendar to come to the BoatHouse prepared to help with the cleanup, maintenance and other chores needed to get us ready for sailing classes, regattas and the summer sailing season we all enjoy. We had a well-attended April meeting. David Gray our Rear Commodore did an excellent job coordinating the potluck and decorating the tables with an Easter decor. The program was Let the Racing Begin. Thanks to Fredric Cottrell, Jim Waller, Kerry Knowles and Mary Anne Secrist for each of their insightful and informative presentations. David advised the Board that our May meeting will have a Cinco de Mayo theme with a taco bar party. Sounds like a lot of fun! Jim Madsen, Vice Commodore, has done an excellent job of identifying interesting programs for our club meetings. But if you have an idea for a program, I m sure he would welcome your input. I would be remiss if I didn t acknowledge My First Mate Judy and our 50 th wedding anniversary May 31 st. Thanks to her willingness to follow me on some crazy ideas, such as learning to sail 3 years ago, we are sailing into the sunset until another adventure or health issue changes our course. Don t forget, our next meeting is May 19 th. Plan to attend, we look forward to seeing you there. Life s wonderful, sail on!

2 Happy Birthday! Happy Birthday to our members. Please, do send along best wishes to our members. You can do so with Facebook, Text, or a caring phone call. 3 17th year of Lake Thunderbird BoatHouse Sailing Camps Two Kids Sailing Camps will be held again this year in June. The dates are June 4-8 with Jerry Lojka as principal instructor and June with Phil Moershel as principal instructor. The June 4-8 camp is nearly filled already! We will need YOUR help this year, experience is not necessary! Classes are held from 9am until 3pm with an hour for lunch. PLEASE try to help us as it provides additional security at the BoatHouse and for the children on the water. Bring your PFD and lunch. With over 2,000 flyers being distributed by Altus Boren and Barbara Schindler for the Little Axe, Noble and Norman Public Schools, we expect all Kids Classes to be filled! Paul Reynolds will be Principal Instructor for the Intermediate Camp from June 28-30, same hours. He will need help as well as Mary Anne Secrist, principal instructor for the Adult (14 and up) Small Boat Sailing Class scheduled on July 10-14, primarily in the evenings. PLEASE LEND A HAND! Above is Abbie Pudlo, daughter of TSC members, Amy and Jason Pudlo!

4 ATTENTION! KIDS SAILING CAMP VOLUNTEERS Saturday, May 19 at 5:45 prior to TSC monthly meeting there will be a Kids Camp volunteer meeting. As a US Sailing Keelboat School, the TSC instructors are adopting the guidelines of the US Center for SafeSport. These guidelines promote safe environments for minor aged participants in sports. The goal is to prevent emotional, physical, and sexual abuse of amateur athletes. One of the key components is limiting one-onone interactions between a minor participant and an adult. Having adult volunteers each day can help not only keep the kids from getting too rowdy but also provide safety in numbers for all. The kids also need encouragement in their skills and reminded to be respectful of each other. T-Shirts will be given to all volunteers that will identify them as belonging to the TSC Sailing School. From your Treasurer and Membership Secretary, Fredrica Cottrell New Members: We are always pleased to have new members; however, we didn t have any in April. Please encourage other sailors who are not members or anyone who likes sailing or just the water to join TSC Membership Directory: You should have received your copy of the new membership directory via . If you did not receive, or are have corrections to the Directory, please let me know. Renewing your TSC membership: For those who have responded with your annual renewal payment, Thank You! However, for those who have yet to send theirs in, it is very disappointing to go to my mailbox and find nothing there. It has been slow going for membership renewals this year and I am hoping that if you are among those who have yet to return yours, that you will consider doing so. We really need your support. Thanks!!! If you have not received your renewal, or perhaps misplaced yours, please get in touch with me. Thank you for all your support J Delinquent TSC Membership Renewals It is never too late to renew your membership. Sadly, I still have several members who have not renewed their memberships for the current year. This makes it difficult to keep our budget goals and it makes my volunteer job harder having to personally remind you. If you have not taken care of the current year s renewal, please do so now. We really need you and we desperately need your financial support. Please. If you have any questions about your membership, please contact me. Thanks. 5 CAP N PHIL S EXCELLENT SAILING ADVENTURE Miami to the Azores, April 15 - May 16 Past TSC Commodore, Phil Moershel. is now well on his way aboard a beautiful 60 expedition sailing yacht. Hummingbird is a powerful expedition yacht designed with safety and simplicity in mind. Originally built for the Clipper round the world yacht race, she has more than proved her seaworthiness with three successful circumnavigations of the globe. Her long fin keel means she has exceptional stability and the cutter rig gives a versatile sail plan that can be quickly matched to conditions as they change. The Hummingbird has thus far transited the Florida Straights and spent a few days in the beautiful Bahamas giving the crew a chance to train for the upcoming ocean voyage s first leg to Hamilton, Bermuda. Presently they are experiencing strong mph winds off the East coast, which will be a great test for the crew onboard this Cat O (highest safety rating) yacht as it makes its way to Bermuda. We are looking forward to Phil s return and having him tell us about his excellent sailing adventure! Hummingbird hard on the wind Cap n Phil, 3rd from end on right, enjoying some Columbian food in Miami prior to trip Distance sailed from Miami to Bermuda, via the Bahamas will be around 1,000 nm and from Bermuda to the Azores over 1,900 nm. 11 The Fleet Captain About Racing 2018 Commodore s Cup Racing Jim Waller If you are expecting to participate in the 2018 Commodore s Cup Racing, please take a few minutes to look at the Deed Of Gift. It s located on Look about half way down the left edge menu that is on most of the pages. The Deed of Gift specifies that the competition is open to club members in good standing. Two fleets are available: Cruising and Spinnaker. You will be asked to state in which fleet you are racing at the beginning of the year to help with the score keeping. Please notice that those who do not race are scored as finishing after those who did race. That is, showing up for the races is important if you want a shot at the trophy. Racing has begun with our first race taking place, last March 21st. We will race every Wednesday, depending on weather, until some time into late October. All communications will be via text message. If you would like to be added to ( or removed from) the message list, send a text to Jim Waller at The Rules Matter, especially Racing What s Barging?

12 TSC Potluck and Programs May 19th Theme: is "diecinueve de mayo" (nineteenth of May). Mexican food please. Program: "Captain, my captain" Paul Reynolds and Jerry Lojka are presenting May program. Certifications are for more than just to frame and hang on your wall. They are an important way to further your sailing knowledge, become more skilled, have access to boats in chartered fleets, and spread the love of sailing to others. Club members Jerry Lojka and Paul Reynolds will present how to go through the process to become a certified instructor all the way up to becoming a licensed captain. 6pm gathering 6:30pm program 8pm clean up Potluck: a-g main dishes; h-m vegies; n-s appetizers/fruit; t-z desserts/breads; Our April meeting was a delight. David Gray provided amazing decorations. The food was good as always and our cast of presenters helped make our sailboat racing easier to understand. Thanks for Fredrica Cottrell on Scoring, Jim Waller on Flags and signaling, Mary Ann Secrist on Room at the Mark and Kerry Knowles and Mary Ann Secrist on Rules of the Race. A good time was had by all. See Jim Waller on the left and Fredrica Cottrell on the right.

13 Highlights from the TSC Board Meeting on Lorrie Sylvester, Secretary Lots going on at TSC! Monthly potlucks and meetings are fun and informative. If you missed it, we are looking into taping presentations like the wonderful speakers at our April meeting (Frederica, Jim Waller, Mary Anne and Kerry) for possible reference on YouTube or our website later! Just as racing is taking off, our April meeting saw wonderful fresh foods for spring, and great information about racing rules. Future programs include Water Safety, Phil talking about his exotic sailing trip, cheeseburgers in paradise, Blues and BBQ, and lots of other great education and foodfilled events. In an effort to build stronger relationships with other clubs and our own membership, we will be looking into some reciprocity activities with other clubs, and invite folks from the nearby marina to join us for some sun, water and fun during summer meetings. We continue to have raftups, usually around the full moon (end of April and May check the schedule on the website!) Our May meeting theme will be "diecinueve de mayo" (19 th of May)...bring your favorite Mexican dishes to share! The treasurer is taking good care of our funds we have over $12,600 in dedicated funds. Jim Madsen brought up some neat ideas for some activities that can help us maintain a revenue stream, such as special T-Shirts that relate to TSC activities. These could be available at regular meetings for participants. We also discussed having public relations activities (reporters attending events, newspaper public service articles, etc.). Weekly racing is off to a stormy start...cantankerous and chilly winds have made for lower turnout. We have a number of folks sailing on shared boats, which has resulted in a conundrum for the Commodore Cup. Current rules require the boat owner to be skipper, and eligible to win. When boats are owned by more than one person, it is difficult to identify the skipper/owner, and sometimes the boat owner may not be on the boat for a given race. So, our Fleet Captain (Jim Waller) moved that for one year we set aside the rule about scoring in terms of a single member/skipper and instead base scoring on boats, for the three boats that are group owned. It remains a requirement that Skippers be members. Mary Anne seconded and it passed by the group. Classes are and will be going on with youth classes beginning in June. Mary Anne is ordering T-shirts for volunteers to wear during the classes so that folks can identify the instructors and helpers. The board and instructors will be discussing implantation of a cancellation policy for folks that register and then don t come to class. We will definitely recoup the paypal fee. Boathouse is active with different groups TriAtheletes, Folks with ESL will be out on Sat., April 28 we could use a few folks to take folks out on boats between 12:00 and 2:00, weather permitting. Come out and help spruce up the BoatHouse and the surrounding areas on our next Work Party May 12, 9-noon. Jim Waller will pull together a list of tasks that need to be done, as well as a mowing schedule. Leukemia Cup is approaching quickly! Jim Madsen and his group will provide the Blues entertainment. The board moved to fund T-Shirts for participants and trophies have been ordered. Lorrie has a number of items for the Silent Auction be watching your and the MainSheet for some early looks and maybe bids on neat items!! If you have an item to contribute, please get in touch with Lorrie. We are also looking to collect nice wines/beers for the Wine and Beer Pull. Please let me know or bring your items to the BoatHouse. Contact Lorrie:Lorraine-sylvester@ouhsc.edu; Auction items include hand-made scarves, stained glass or other ornaments, OU Press set/books, smoked salmon, and great stuff
