It could happen any time, tornado, earthquake, Armageddon. It could happen, or sunshine, love, salvation. It could, you know. That s why we wake and look out no guarantees in this life. But some bonuses, like morning, like right now, like noon, like evening... Or like a great day on the water. (adapted from Yes, by William Stafford) This is the time of year of anticipation as the sailing season gets fully under way. Will it rain enough to refill our lake? Will the new upgrades to my boat work like I imagined? Will our new Monday night regattas work out well? Will the newly acquired pontoon boat (yet to be purchased) work out to be the asset we hope? Will we gain the five new boats actively being sailed in our club fleet I am hoping for? Lots of questions, and some of these things will work out, if not all and more, but life does not come with guarantees. It is an adventure. I was reading this week in the March issue of Sail magazine about more than 100 boats getting ready to sail across the Atlantic. It is an exciting article to read, an adventure about to be launched. The president of the association offers his encouragement just before the start and says, It s going to be an adventure. And that is what we are made for. I like sailing and sailors because they tend to be a group of people who enjoy adventure and embrace life. With this year s sailing season, there are no guarantees except that it will be an adventure and, with luck, a great time. I hope so. See you on the water. Jim Eller 1

First Monday Night Sail of the Season It was April Fool s Day, but we weren t fooling around too much. There was too much wind for that.

Shamrock was first, Synchronicity second, Preciouss third and Pelicanno fourth. Afterwards, almost everyone returned to the BoatHouse for beer, pop, and conversation.

2 First Monday Night Sail of the Season It was April Fool s Day, but we weren t fooling around too much. There was too much wind for that. We had a great time and great winds. There were four boats out, and crew joining in at the last minute meant no one singlehanded. Shamrock was first, Synchronicity second, Preciouss third and Pelicanno fourth. Afterwards, almost everyone returned to the BoatHouse for beer, pop, and conversation. It was a great time and a good start to the season. We will be on the water racing every Monday evening, unless otherwise notified until the Hiram in early November. Come join us. There is almost always room for another hand on deck or boat in the water. Jim Eller Deep River Blues Orville and Courtney Fisher will present April 20 s program on the trials and tribulations of transporting their Rawson 32 sailboat by river. Their adventures included the sinking and raising of the vessel, restoration, and fabrication of new masts made of Sitka spruce, the same species used in guitar tops and wooden airplane wings. The meeting will have the regular format potluck dinner at 6 p.m.; BYOF (bring your own friends). Among the topics Worden discussed were that Oklahoma is in the second year of what could be a five-year drought. Potential solutions included retreating sewage water and returning it to the lake (Worden said reclaimed water would enter the lake cleaner than the water in the lake is now) and buying water from other sources, such as Atoka. The group has a closing dinner planned, and I thought it would be good for the group and the club to host it at the BoatHouse, followed by a sail, much in the way Les has arranged the Fleming

3 Fellow Thundersailors, Through a grant from the U.S. Dept. of State, nine Bangladeshi journalists in a fellowship program will be working in the metro area for three weeks in April and will spend a week in early May in Washington, D.C. The program is administered through OU and, as you might have guessed, one of the fellows will be hosted by The Journal Record. Others will be working at The Oklahoman, Channel 9, and other local media outlets. The group has a closing dinner planned, and I thought it would be good for the group and the club to host it at the BoatHouse, followed by a sail, much in the way Les has arranged the Fleming Scholars events in years past. All told, I need room for 19 passengers: The nine Bangladeshi journalists, their Oklahoma media hosts,* and a program administrator or two. I can take up to four on Shamrock, if necessary, and Les has generously volunteered to help with the event and sail Enya, but clearly we ll need more boats. If any of you can participate as BoatHouse host, captain or crew, I would very much appreciate it. The event is scheduled for late afternoon/early evening on Tuesday, April 30. the meaning is the same. On Saturday April 27, Trinity Lutheran Church s English conversation class will meet at the BoatHouse from about 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to learn about sailing.

However, the one thing missing is volunteers with keelboats! If you have access to a keelboat, would you consider taking students out for a ride on April 27 and sharing your love of sailing with them?

Whether you say it in English or in Portuguese, French, Italian, Arabic, Chinese, and Korean, the native language of about 20 students attending a local English as a Second Language class this spring the meaning is the same. On Saturday April 27, Trinity Lutheran Church s English conversation class will meet at the BoatHouse from about 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to learn about sailing. The class will be divided into two portions an in-classroom session, taught by Mike Klatt (thank you, Mike!), and then, weather- and volunteer-permitting, a session on the water in keelboats. 6 The TSC plans to purchase a new or nearly new pontoon boat! Where the heck is my pontoon boat?! Goal reached! The Lake Thunderbird Educational Foundation Board of Directors has joined with the TSC to provide up to $6,000 in matching funds toward the purchase of a new or nearly new pontoon boat and motor! If you contribute toward the purchase, every dollar you give will be matched by the LTEF up to $6,000. For example, if you give $500, we will then have $1,000 toward the purchase. We hope to sell the old pontoon boat, and the LTEF has approved the s a l e o f several unused centerboard boats to raise additional funds for the project. With some money from the TSC and the Jerry Layton Fund and donations from YOU, we will be able to get the new boat. It all depends on you, our members and friends, to help us get a new or newer pontoon boat and motor. If Check out TSC website! 3
