We had another successful Leukemia/Lymphoma Cup. The weather cooperated and everyone had a great time. We raised some money as well. Thank you all for your financial support. We are already considering the date for next year. Ted Streuli gave an interesting program on a newly discovered sunken vessel in the Caribbean at the monthly meeting and the food was wonderful. June gives us lots of excuses to be at the lake. I urge you to join the Moonrise Raft Up on June 9 from 7:30-10PM, (see more below). Great way to spend a Friday evening. The lake is lovely at night. The meeting Luau theme sounds fun. You never know who will turn up in a grass skirt. Now where did I put those parrots? The Kids camps are getting ready to roll. If you don t want to launch or drive boats, just the presence of adults helps keep the kids focused and facilitates transition from one activity to the next. They can be a handful to keep hydrated and sunscreen covered. You can also coach from a kayak or centerboard sailboat. Sunday, June 11 is a TRI-OKC sponsored Youth Triathlon Clinic. These kids were on the front page of The Norman Transcript a few weeks ago. Who knows, if they see sail boats and Sea Scouts they might want to become sailors. Another opportunity to expose youth to our sport and encourage their participation in all sports. Swimming and sailing are lifetime sports. I hope you will note the officers reports. They have all done exceptional jobs to support the club. Let them know their time is appreciated. See you on the water. An invitation from our Vice-Commodore Jim Eller There will be a Raft Up on June 9 th 7:30-10pm Moonrise is at 8:53 pm and Sunset is at 8:44 pm. With a little weather luck it could an absolutely beautiful evening. It has been a while since we held a raft-up. They are lots of fun. Bring your boat or catch a ride on a boat. Meet and anchor in the cove east of the former Clear Bay Café. Bring wine, beer and or snacks to share. The pontoon boat will launch from the BoatHouse about 7:15pm. If you want to ride along on the pontoon boat, be at the BoatHouse by 7pm. Hope to see you there. 1

However, for those who have yet to send theirs in, it is very disappointing to go to my mailbox and find nothing there. It has been slow going for membership renewals this year and I am hoping that if you are among those who have yet to return yours, that you will consider doing so. We really need your support. Thanks!!! If you have not received your renewal, or perhaps misplaced yours, please get in touch with me. Thank you for all your support J Delinquent TSC Membership Renewals It is never too late to renew your membership. We really need you and we desperately need your financial support. If you have any questions about your membership, please contact me. Thanks. 4 Eight Bells for two former TSC member! Earl Carpenter and Art Marchessault The Thunderbird Sailing Club has had two members cross the bar this week. Retired US Naval Pilot, Commander, Earl "Carpy" Carpenter of Norman, a long time member who along with his wife Jan and his son Paul were all terrific sailors and officers of the club. They were very competitive sailing their Merit 25 "Soupy San" And Art Marchessault, of St. Albans Bay, Vermont, who was a TSC member some years ago and sailed competitively aboard his Catalina 25. Our deepest condolences to all their friends and family. They will be greatly missed by all who knew them. Please note that the BoatHouse has a beautiful Memorial Plaque in the entry foyer that contains names of former members and their family members and friends. These plates are engraved and mounted when donations (of $100 or more) are made to the LTEF in their honor. I know that donations are forthcoming in memory of both Earl and his wife Jan (who passed away in 2012) as well as Art. Keep this in mind as friends of the TSC, BoatHouse and LTEF cross the bar. AArt Marchessault 4
5 Volunteers Needed! Volunteers provide the life blood of an organization. For the Thunderbird Sailing Club this statement rings true. No person in the club is paid for the hours he or she contributes to achieve the goals or promoting sailing, encouraging good sportsmanship, and providing friendship and fun. Below are listed some of the upcoming volunteer opportunities: June 5 to 9: Summer Kids Camp 9am til 3pm (Jerry Lojka, instructor) June 12: Veterans Luncheon 10am til 1pm (Les Cummings, contact) June 26 to 30: Summer Kids Camp 9am til 3pm (Phil Moershel, instructor) July 8: OKASA/GODSA WaterFest all day (Paul Reynolds, contact) July 13 to 15 : Intermediate Sailing Camp 9am til 3pm (Paul Reynolds, contact) Sept 9: CAST for Kids 8am til 2pm (Les Cummings, contact) Check the schedules for upcoming BoatHouse events that you might be interested in Finally, two times a year we have BoatHouse and boat yard cleanup. Sailing experience is not a prerequisite for helping in the activities listed above. A glad hand is. To find out more about these Volunteer activities, check the BoatHouse Schedule in the Mainsheet, check the TSC FaceBook page, check the TSC Wedsite or contact Phil Moershel, Boathouse Chair, pmoershel@sbcglobal.net; or Barbara Schindler, Volunteer Coordinator, bschin@cox.net. 5

7 BoatHouse Hosts Veterans What a terrific day for the Norman Veterans Center at the Lake Thunderbird BoatHouse! We had sixteen veterans, plus Sarge the vets mascot doggie and 4 great Norman Vet Center staff come out to the Lake Thunderbird BoatHouse. The Thunderbird Sailing Club had Marles, Les, Phil, David, Ed, Roger, Les and Teresa help out! Also, a big Thank you to Cheri Elliott for the delicious dessert! In addition to the TSC members, the Edmond Elks Lodge provided lunch for all the volunteers and had Dale, Gerald, Joddy, LD, Chris, Roger, Lin, Joe, John, Leo and Anita help move the vets to the BoatHouse, serve lunch, move the vets to/from the dock and Pontoon Boat and cleaned up the BoatHouse. The veterans were served a delicious luncheon on the verandah and most took a nice boat ride on the lake thanks to Phil Moershel and the Thunderbird Sailing Club. This was the second of three monthly spring luncheons. The final luncheon will be held on Monday June 12 at 10am until 1pm If YOU have a little time that day please come out and help the veterans, meet the Edmond Elks Lodge volunteers and work with your TSC fellow members. God Bless our veterans1 7
8 TSC Leukemia Cup Report By: Mary Anne Secrist Great weekend of sailing at the second Leukemia/Lymphoma Cup Regatta hosted by the Thunderbird Sailing Club! PRO Phil Moershal did a great job planning and managing the harbor. A special thanks to Regatta Chair, Phil Moershel, Principal Race Officer Paul Pape of OCBC and all the help on the Race Committee boat (Fredrica Cottrell, Daniela Erickson (from the LLS), Sylvia Ritzky, Kerry Knowles, Mike Klatt, and Emily Schuster ). Safety boat operators included Les Cummings, Roger Elliott, Greg Stevens, and David Gray. The four fleets were Catalina 22, San Juan, Spinnaker, and Non-Spinnaker. A total of 12 boats registered. Racers completed two light air courses on Saturday before the winds died. Sundays single long race featured more excitement in heavier air. First place trophies went to: Catalina 22 Fleet: Mary Anne Secrist, "Second Chance" Non-Spinnaker Fleet: Barrett Williamson, "Good Times" Spinnaker Fleet: Bill Etchieson, "Flying Circus" San Juan 21 Fleet: Paul Reynolds, "The Great Pumpkin The Rear Commodores, Judy and Jim Chapman, greeted sailors and volunteers with breakfast items and snacks. The plentiful evening meal included grilled favorites and fried fish. TSC members provided side salads and great deserts. Thanks to all who helped with serving and clean up. The 3rd Annual Silent Auction was successful at raising over $1,000. Lorrie Sylvester and Doris Shoemaker solicited auction items and arranged display. Thanks to all the TSC members and friends who secured or provided a variety of items including artwork, jewelry, and enticing baskets. Everything had a bid and a buyer!! Next year we may be more adventurous and try online bidding. Many people also donated online so we don t know the final tally as yet. Again, many thanks to the planners, racers, crew, auction providers, buyers, food providers, set up and clean up folks from TSC. It was a great weekend and we really appreciate the help and support of all who contributed to fight Leukemia and Lymphoma. 8
