Home Port Corinthian Yacht Club of Bellingham 122º W 48º44 55 N June, 2008 Volume 23 Number 6 Sharing Your Secret Harbors If your thoughts keep slipping off to summer sailing, you re not alone. Poised, as we are, on the edge of the best cruising waters in the United States, what else can you do? But there are so many great places out there that it can be hard to choose a destination, so we asked some club members to suggest their favorite areas and anchorages. Elizabeth Kilanowski and Bert Rubash have done a lot of sailing since 1997 when they left Lake Superior on a voyage that took them from the East Coast to Hawaii, by way of Panama, and landed them in Puget Sound 10 years ago. They ve lived aboard ever since, currently on their C&C 40 Elan, moored in the Blaine Harbor. Elizabeth says, Later this summer we plan on sailing north to the Broughtons and we ll stay at one of our favorite a n c h o r a g e s, Waddington Bay on Bonwick Island. Its approach has a couple of turns and there are shoals but careful attention to the chart will make for a smooth entry. There is plenty of room for a number of boats and the holding is very good. From this anchorage we have taken our dingy into Retreat Passage and explored the Fox Group and watched white-sided dolphins at play. Just inside Waddington is a good example of the oyster gardens that First Nations people constructed with stones where shellfish could be harvested. Pat and Pete Lamb have already been out this spring in their Esprit 37 Shag for a visit to Prevost Harbor, Stuart Island, which they say is one of our favorite spots in the San Juans. We like to go to places where we can anchor, and go ashore for some hiking. Being selfsufficient, we don t need to be at a dock, or plug in. Another favorite spot is in Canada, Winter Cove, on Saturna Island, Plumper Sound, past Lyall Harbor. It is a little more difficult to enter, with rocks on the starboard side, but is a nice, quiet place to anchor, and 1 there is a wonderful walk out to the Strait of Georgia. For an occasional treat we enjoy going to Todd Inlet to visit Butchart Gardens. Todd Inlet itself is beautiful, and anchoring is good. Plus, as part of a provincial park, there are also hiking trails along the shore. Rob and Sharon Wells say they have recently discovered Eagle Harbor on Cypress Island as a great getaway spot close to Bellingham. There are 15 mooring buoys in the harbor, placed there last year by DNR. they say. The best part about them is that they are free! Cypress Island is mostly public land and there is a network of trails on the island that can keep a hiker busy for days. The only caution about mooring there is that there is a shoal area in the middle of the cove that affects the buoys in the center. Be mindful of the depths and check the tide tables before selecting a buoy to tie to. Rob and Sharon, new owners of Sirena, a Grand Banks 36, have been members of CYC for three years. They ve done a lot of sailboat cruising, including a three month trip of 1,300 nautical miles on the north coast of British Columbia in Mel and Barbara Davidson, owners of Bon Accord, a Pacific Seacraft 34, also have a lot of cruising miles under their hull, from Alaska to Panama. But after all those long-distance voyages, Barbara says Mel s all-time favorite anchorage is very close to home, and that s Ewing Cove on the northeast corner of Sucia. It has a perfect little sand beach, she says, along with wonderful sand sculptures and lots of wild life. Ewing Cove is open to southeast winds and subject to strong tidal currents, Mel warns. Anchoring is uncertain at best. But there are three or four Parks Department buoys to tie up to. Unfortunately it is often difficult to Secret Harbors is continued on page 7

2008 CYC Bellingham Officers Commodore Don Beasley Vice Commodore Wendy Barrett Secretary David Cunningham Treasurer Bob Cooper Administrative Officer Laurent Martel Membership Ray Gobush Race Chair Mick Corcoran Cruise Chair David Barrett Reciprocity Steve Clevenger PIYA Rep Mick Corcoran PHRF Rep Rob Galbraith Newsletter Editor Mike Reed Commodore s Corner Greetings From The Wickie Give yourselves a pat on the back and a well done. You have weathered the winter storms and spring rains so now comes the sailing season we have all been waiting for. Our club activities have proved to be stellar by many accounts. The annual 2008 Matia Island clean up was a total success with eight boats and crews participating in general manicuring of trails and rebuilding of picnic tables. Alas the barbeque pits have been permanently removed and the federal government which shares responsibility for the park is seeking to restore Matia Island to a wilderness status. Our Sucia\ Matia resident Ranger is communicating with our administrative officer Laurent Martel in preparation for a club presentation suggesting what we might do to preserve Matia as a place for our occasional visits. I dare not go on about the issue as Laurent and his new found Ranger associate have much more to add and I do not want to move into their arena. Our pot luck meals have turned into gourmet feasts. I thank you all for your participation. They will be missed during our summer absence due to our regular meeting cycles. Our last meeting featured Mike Reed and a superb revisit of Life Sling operation and a live fire flare exercise with the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary. Every one wanting to had an opportunity to activate one of the devices. On a personal note I went to my boat to look at expiration dates on my emergency signals and discovered everything I had was three years out of date. I am up to date now and I encourage everyone to examine your equipment before you need it. An old axiom in sports suggests you play the way you practice. The importance of practicing with all of your emergency equipment, fire extinguishers, Life Sling, MOB electronics, flares and other items means you will be ready with a proper response should a real emergency occur. Stay safe and enjoy your summer. Respectfully, Don Beasley Commodore CYC Kaye Clevenger photo 2

Executive Board Meeting Notes Tuesday 3 rd of June 2008 Board Members Present: Don Beasley, Wendy Barrett, David Cunningham, Bob Cooper, Laurent Martel, Ray Gobush, David Barrett, Steve Clevenger, Mike Reed The meeting started at 18:00 (6 pm) This special board meeting was focused primarily on getting ready for next year and what the board would like to see happen. The meeting was opened with a discussion on education items and the possibility of a Life Sling class in particular. Some of the issues were, lining up instructors, getting in the water volunteers victims and someone to co-ordinate the volunteer victims as well as the overall class. Mike Reed went over some of the history of the event with the CYC and offered to be a part of it again by lining up instructors, but needs someone else to take the lead on the rest, perhaps a committee with membership participation. Laurent brought thank you notes for the board to sign for the pulled pork at the Bar-B-Q and the Coast Guard Auxiliary for helping out with the flare shoot. And Bob said we received thank you notes from Hospice for the $25 donation and the Ski to Sea for lending them buoys for the kayak leg. Wendy brought up changing the Christmas party as she has had several comments from members about the format. There were many suggestions made, but in the end it was decided to keep the Christmas party partly as it has been with an awards ceremony with the as well as the installation of new officers for the next year. The discussion continued on to include the possibility of having an excursion to the Seattle Boat Show in January, perhaps by buss or train, another Christmas Ship trip on Lake Union, and a Commodores Ball in February. Again one of the issues was who would coordinate all this and the need for membership volunteers for each activity. There was significant discussion about opening day and how the CYC could be more involved and visible. The swap meet is an important activity and it was suggested that the planning for that be expanded to give more support to Bruce or whoever takes the lead. Another committee with support from the membership? There seems to be a pattern here. There was also some discussion about involving Bellingham Bay Community Boating Center (BBCBC) in some type of educational activity, perhaps having some boats available of different sizes and people to talk to the public about getting out on the water and boats in general. The board agreed we need to more clearly define what the CYC s relationship with the BBCBC. Wendy offered to talk with some of the BBCBC board members about that and get the ball rolling. There was a long discussion about improving coordination and mutual support with the Squalicum Yacht Club. Perhaps being more mutually involved in stewardship activities and opening day activities. Ray and Mike offered to explore the possibilities with Squalicum board. The Race Chair is still unfilled and there was concern that racers are only interested in participating by racing their boats but not on the race committee. We may end up next year with less formal racing and just a committee with no chair. Mike made a motion to set up a committee to look into the future of racing with the CYC and what its place is. It passes unanimously. The meeting adjourned at 20:30 (8:30pm) David J. Cunningham, Secretary Members Choice! Sucia Island-Echo Bay June Do you know that Sucia Island-Echo Bay is the second most favorite cruising destination, according to our recent CYC member survey? For those of you who have never been to Sucia, our June cruise is a great opportunity to get to know this beautiful island! There is so much to explore; easy hikes, stunning geological formations and marine fossil deposits. If you have children (or grandchildren) this might be a wonderful time to bring them along. Echo Bay offers many mooring buoys and provides good anchorage. This is a NO-HOST cruise, so fly your CYC burgee, monitor your radio and keep your eyes open for other CYC friends. Traditionally we gather for an evening potluck so you might want to plan on bringing something to share. Dave Barrett, Cruise Chair This afternoon event is an impromptu raft-up of members and friends most likely in the north end of Chuckanut Bay. Fly your burgee, look for other CYC burgees on boats, hang your bumpers and take this chance to meet and enjoy the company of other CYC members. Be sure to bring finger food or snacks to share. Expect the first boats to arrive sometime in the early afternoon after a sail on the bay. The raft-up will break-up in time to be back to the docks in time to view the fireworks. If you have any questions call Mike or Karen Reed at Other Summer Events We will be publishing smaller monthly newsletters during the summer. Cruise hosts should send a short summary of the upcomming event much like the ones above. Then follow-up with a short narrative of what happened. If you have good photos from a CYC event, a cruise of your own or a great day sail, please send them to losreeds@ comcast.net and weʼll get as many as we can published. 3

What s in Your First Aid Kit? Girl Scouts and sailors have one thing in common the motto be prepared! There s nothing quite like having just what you need at your fingertips. When it comes to first aid kits, it pays to check it out at the start of the boating season. I prefer to think of our first aid kit as a medicine cabinet also, and so it s customized to our needs. Everything is kept in a soft-sided lunch cooler bag protected from the elements and can be taken topside, if needed. Think ahead to what kinds of on board injuries/events you might run into- abrasions, a toothache, a kitchen burn, a splinter, a smashed finger. Our sailing is done in the islands, not far from help for traumatic injuries. Start out with hand sanitizer, Betadine solution, antibiotic ointment and latex gloves. Plenty of bandaids, some sterile dressing pads (3 x 3 and 4 x 4 ), a roll of adhesive tape, a couple of roll bandages, some skin closure strips (butterfly type). Knuckle and fingertip bandages. An elastic ankle brace. A tweezers for splinters, a thermometer, some instant cold packs, moleskin for blisters, 2 x2 eyepads and an eye cup. A plastic finger cot; some tongue blades can also be used as a splint. A small dental kit with oil of cloves, a mouth mirror, dental floss and dental paste for lost fillings. Dramamine and Transderm Scop patches. Aloe vera lotion and sunscreen. Tylenol; Benadryl for itching, nausea and insomnia; Immodium AD and Ducolax for gastric problems. Sudafed and Dristan for congestion. A sting aid kit. Eye drops for strained eyes. Maalox or Mylanta for heartburn. Hydrocortisone cream. Sore throat lozenges. Since the marine environment is hard on just about everything, check your kit at the beginning of every season to see that nothing has deteriorated. If you have a vacuum packaging appliance, small packs of various supplies can be assembled and will keep indefinitely. Lynn Gobush So you think Sucia gets crowed? The photo above is at the Ismus on Santa Catalina Island off southern California. It was taken the week before Memorial Day and while it looks crowed then, over the holiday all of the bouys would have boats on them and folks would have been anchoring further out in 90 feet of water. 4

Meet Kaye and Steve Clevenger Past and Present CYC Board Members Kaye and Steve Clevenger are active CYC members, who both lead very active lives. Club members since 2000, Kaye has served as treasurer for five years, and Steve serves as reciprocity chair, a position he has been in for the last three years. Both agree that the club is comprised of a great group of people, and that actively participating in the club has been a rewarding and enjoyable experience. Both Kaye and Steve are Bellingham natives, with Kaye graduating from Ferndale High and Steve from Bellingham High (back when there was only one high school, he says with a grin). They have two grown daughters, and one grandson. Recently, they took their grandson, who is two, on his first cruise to Maita Island, and are looking forward to instilling the sailing spirit in him. When they first got their boat, their daughters, then in their teens, didn t particularly like sailing, as it was just too slow not an uncommon complaint from teens. Kaye and Steve came to sailing later than some Steve took a week long sailing class in 1999, and decided then that he wanted a boat. Kaye s first sail was on the maiden voyage of their new Catalina 34, the K- Lynne, in June of She recalled that the wind was blowing, the chop was up in Bellingham Bay, and there might have been too much sail up. Fortunately, that first sail didn t deter her, as she now really enjoys being on the water. They have cruised in the San Juans and the Gulf Islands, and have enjoyed the CYC cruises. They both agreed that their favorite sailing is to take friends out on the bay or down to Chuckanut for a day sail and to share a relaxing meal. Kaye retired from ARCO in 2000, where she worked in the Human Resources department for 30 years. She was the first local ARCO hire, and one of the last ARCO retiree s. She has continued to work off and on for BP, though, doing special projects and is currently working 3 days a week. In 1990, Kaye also started an antique business, and operates a shop at their home. Steve worked as a journeyman electrician for 35 years, and then changed careers, becoming a Civil Engineering Technician in He started his own business, and then took a job with CH2M HILL within the last year. Steve enjoys his work, and doesn t anticipate retiring soon. Steve is also an artist, painting in acrylics. He has had several local shows and enjoys the creative process. In addition to the demands of work, family and their other activities, Kaye and Steve maintain a beautiful home and wonderful yard, which includes a koi pond. The CYC is a great club because of members like Kaye and Steve. They encourage all members to participate, especially by sharing information about favorite cruising spots and good reciprocity experiences, which can be easily done by sending them an . Jon Martin A Relative Cruiser Einstein had long been the most famous scientist alive when he settled in Princeton, New Jersey, in He sailed extensively in New England in a 17-foot daysailer called Tinef, meaning Worthless, but he was no conventional sailor. He never strayed far from the shore. He certainly didn t race. He had no desire to pit Tinef against any other yacht. His friend. Dr. Gustav Bucky, who sailed with him often, said: The natural counterplay of wind and water delighted him most. One has to conclude, therefore, that Einstein was a cruising sailor, relatively speaking. Copyright CYC member John Vigor, author of The Practical Mariner s Book of Knowledge. yachttecbham@aol.com 5

Once again CYC can be proud of their service to the boating community On Matia we cleaned and raked the trail with rakes and weed whackers, removed trash from the beaches by hand, cleaned up the camp sites and put new seats and tops onto the picnic tables. As usual we had aterrific pot luck evening on the dock with laughter and as always, great food! Thanks to the crews of Bon Accord, Falcon, K-lynne, Shag, Thanx, Moonlight, Nordic Flyer and Islander for their great Participation. 7 Secret Harbors is continued from page 1 in the entrance from Echo Bay, but it is navigable with care. It can also be entered from the southeast with care (and charts). Sylvia and Dennis Holmstrom love Barkley Sound. It s our favorite place, Sylvia says, after more than 20 years of cruising in the Pacific Northwest. We ve been three times. To me it s like they took the San Juan islands, shrunk em, and threw em down in a nice big sound peppered with salmon and wildlife. You have to be careful of rocks, though, even when you are in the dinghy. The wildlife and the salmon are special attractions. We ve had grey whales come within 30 feet of the boat. The Holmstrom s other favorite place is the South Sound in the summer when everyone else has gone north. That s where they are going this summer aboard their Sabre 40 Sapphire. Kari and Rob Galbraith sail Dreamtime, an Elite 36, and have been exploring these waters since their honeymoon cruise 30 years ago. Kari says one of the places they often go to is Indian Cove on Shaw Island. There is a lovely park there, a beautiful spot, and it s only about a mile walk up to the park, she says. There are hundreds of acres there that the University of Washington owns. You can walk up and see the old homestead and there are hundreds of apple trees. It is a nice early fall spot. If you walk across the island there is a cute little store, and along the walk there is a sweet little sitting place where you will find several journals that are left there for anyone to write in or read. It s fun to write a little about your day and read what others have said. It s a fair-weather anchorage, with some ferry wake, fairly exposed to the southwest, but there is good holding ground, she says. Rocky and Patsy Goodhope plan to get up to the Gulf Islands for a couple of 10-day weeks this summer aboard their Choate 40 Flamenca. Rocky says one of their favorite places is Winter Cove between Samuel Island and Saturna Island, in the Gulf Islands. He says it s a nice cove, very protected, but, as Pete Lamb says, there is a narrow, shallow entrance, with rocks, which takes some care. But there are also plenty of seals, otter, and eagles, since it s part of a provincial park. One thing that s fun to do there, if the tide is right, is to take your inflatable through a little passage where you can ride the rapids and it shoots you out into the Strait of Georgia, Rocky says. There are several little islands close by where you can land and explore. Bill and Jeni Mihelich sail with their teenagers, Spencer, 16, and Ellie, 14, aboard Shekinah, their Newport 30. Bill says, For us, historically, our favorite place is Reid Harbor on Stuart Island. He says the kids like to walk up to the Treasure Chest for T-shirts. There is a family on the island that prints T-shirts with slogans like Pirates of the San Juans and puts them in a wooden chest up by the school, he says, and you just take a shirt and leave money. They also enjoy walking out to the lighthouse on the end of the island. Reid Harbor has got some reefs you have to watch out for, Bill says. There s one outside the harbor that can be a problem. The key is to be sure to look at your charts, as always. A new favorite place for the family is Port Townsend, where they stay in a marina. That s good for the teenagers because they can go ashore for pizza and entertainment and there is public transport to get them around, Bill says.
