Fall is in the air and the winds are still fair. It is a great time to be out on the bay looking ashore to see the changing of the leaves and to see the first dusting of snow on the peaks. Time to think about that last coat of wax or to seal up that leak you have been avoiding. So fill your fuel tanks, stabilize the fuels, and make ready for winter sailing in colder weather and winds. It s time to change those sun hats for stocking caps, and shorts for long underwear! Remember: any day on the bay is a good day with your favorite hot beverage in a mug. It is once again budget time for the club. In this newsletter you will find that we are submitting a budget that is a little up side down. At our last bridge meeting we did not get a chance to work with it due to technical problems. So, this is an opportunity for you to look at it and give input to your bridge. We voted at our last meeting to fund the education committee s life sling class, some speakers, and another woman s sailing program. The $ we dedicated to education is seed money. We will be able to recoup funds with class costs and donations. If you would like to participate in the direction of education please call me or Glenn. The other thing we need to do is roll around the possibility of raising our dues. Not for the sake of building a bank account, but for providing a higher level of service to our club and the community. We make every effort to be frugal with our funds and make each dollar count. I would propose a $5.00 to $10.00 increase per year in our dues to cover expanded programs. The other way to increase revenue is to add members. Most members seem content with our current size which is remains pretty stable. Just food for thought. This October s meeting we will hear from speakers talking about the waterfront and the many directions the port, city, WWU and the private sector want to take us. It should be a very informative meeting. Also, Rocky will be recapping the race season and recognizing those who came out on Thursdays nights to play on the bay. Rocky said it will not be just first, second and third places, but a more of a look at effort and fun. We have also formed a nomination committee for next years officers. 3 Sailing the Zanzibar Coast I flew into Nairobi, Kenya on 15 September to help an old friend sail his 53' ketch down the East African coast from Ntwapa, Kenya to Richards Bay, South Africa. I first met Bob, his wife Joanie, son Ryan and daughter Lisa in Kalimantan, Indonesia when I was up the Kumi River in 99 seeing the Orangatangs. We subsequently were in the eight boat convoy that traveled from there through the South China Sea to Singapore. The pirates in the area make convoying the only save way to make the passage. Bob also talked a friend from Keri Keri, New Zealand, his home town, to make the trip with him. I met Peter in Nairobi and we took the train down to Mombassa, an experience not to be missed or repeated. After provisioning in Ntwapa we set off for Mombassa, only eight miles away but against a three knot current and directly against the wind. After six hours we dropped the anchor in Mombassa and were immediately visited by the pilot boat with three police who boarded us, observed that we had a very expensive boat and asked for the papers. After closely examining them they left. Ten minutes later they were back to inform us that we failed to call the Dhow Captain on channel twelve when we entered. We called him and were informed that he was greatly offended and even more offended when we tried to plead ignorance instead of begging his forgiveness. Since it was close to his quitting time Bob was told to report first thing in the morning, 9am, to his office. At nine sharp Bob met the Dhow Captain and all his lackeys, an array of Fez heads, was written up for his offence, fined a moderate amount and told he had one hour to leave Mombassa. This put us out in gathering bad weather for an overnight passage to Shimoni, Kenya. The wind got up to 35 knots during the night but Nemir handled it without complaint which was more than could be said about the crew. Peter is a powerboater who had never sailed an overnighter before and was full of comments about the virtues of a fivehundred horsepower engine in such situations. After a day of rest we sailed down to Tanga, Tanzania from where we took a seven hour second class bus up to Arusha, which is the center for Safaris to many surrounding game parks, including the Serengeti. We visited Lake Menyara and the Ngorongoro Crater where we saw thousands of birds and animals, more than twenty different species of each, and of the big seven, only failed to see a leopard. Leaving Tanga after our return we again sailed against wind and current to anchor at ten in the evening on Zanzibar Island. Only thirty miles as the crow flies but sixteen hours of fighting wind and current once again. Bill Servais Page 3
