1 Home Port Corinthian Yacht Club of Bellingham 122º W 48º44 55 N May, 2009 Volume 24 Number 5 BBCBC Work Party We had perfect weather for our Saturday, April 18 work party at BBCBC. About 25 enthusiastic CYC members and volunteers showed up to work. Some of the jobs that we were able to accomplish were scraping and repainting the side of the buildings, demolishing part of a building that will be rebuilt to house kayak storage, cleaning and removal of debris around the yard, cleaning the shoreline, reroofing of the their main building, cleaning kayaks and boats, and many other miscellaneous tasks. There were two truck loads of materials driven to recycling It was a great day and we could really see that there was progress made. BBCBC is in need of continous volunteering. Anyone that has any extra time to help out with tasks should call Mike at BBCBC at and I am sure he will put you to work and take advantage of your expertise. Steve and Kaye Clevenger Thursday Night Racing The first four nights of racing have been completed, kind of. The April races are typically gear busters where boats beat out to the Post Point Bouy with their smallest head sails and a reefed main but this year couldn t be much different. The first race started off well but about the time the fleets reached the weather mark the winds shut off completely and the race was finally abandoned. The second race was a bit better with all boats getting around the course once but then the wind quit in the second lap forcing the committee use the single lap times for finishes. The third race started nicely in light air, The cruising fleet finished their once around race while only about half of the spinnaker boats made it twice before the wind shut off. So what is usually a windy series sailed with small sails and foul weather gear has turned out to be a light race series sailed in relatively warm and dry air. While the winds have been frustrating, it appears that everyone out is enjoying themselves greatly and that is the word at the large after race gathering at the Bella Marina. Joe Bartlett and his race committee have done a great job laying out good courses to give us a great time on the water. Thanks guys! I am always amazed at what can be accomplished when enthusiastic people combine their energy! The work party at Bellingham Bay Community Boating Center had outstanding participation. I am proud of this partnership and the contributions CYC members are making to this organization. Special thanks goes to Steve and Kaye Clevenger for organizing the event and to Mike Calazaikis, Executive Director of BBCBC for his direction and positive spirit through the day. How about all the race activity? One look at the bay on Thursday night and you will see a successful season is underway! Joe Bartlett and Todd Koetje get major kudos for making this happen each week, as do all of the folks who turn out to race. Thanks, also, to Bruce Henninger for his organization of our Opening Day Swap Meet. We garnered about $70.00 in donations, which will be forwarded to BBCBC. Finally, a well-deserved thank you goes to those who helped with the CYC Information Booth This includes Jon Martin for the canopy, Kaye and Steve Clevenger for the table and chairs and booth volunteers: Lesli Brewster, Joyce Pearson, Kathy Sheehan, Chuck Dingee and Dave Last But Not Least Barrett. Speaking of enthusiastic people combining energy, your Board held an extended meeting to review our current budget and begin planning for next year. While the Club s current financial status remains positive, it is clear that rising costs and additional expenses threaten this position for the future. After careful study and much discussion, the Board elected to make a few changes in fees and practices, beginning next year. One change is to move to electronic delivery of the newsletter, with an option for members to subscribe to receive paper copies by mail. Another change, made necessary by increased insurance and membership fees, is to raise the fee for racing to $60.00 per season. We also elected to give up the storage closet at Zuanich Boathouse, in favor of cleaning it out and finding off-site storage for anything that remains. The budget remains a work in progress. Another Board work session is planned for June 2 nd, when we will review a draft budget and consider additional changes that may be needed in order to present you with a balanced, viable budget for Please send your ideas and suggestions to me or any other Board member. As per CYC By-Laws, next year s budget will be presented to members at our September general meeting and will be subject to membership approval in October. Finally, I want to acknowledge the Board for the extra time and care that has gone into the budgeting task this year. They are a truly a conscientious and fiscally responsible group! On a personal note, Dave and I were able to sublease a slip in Squalicum Harbor for the summer. We are excited to be here and hope to see you on the water! With smiles, Commodore Wendy Newsletter Editor Mike Reed losreeds@comca

3 Executive Board Meeting Report May 5 th 2009 Board members Present: Wendy Barrett, Larry Folenius, David Cunningham, Bob Cooper, Laurent Martel, Ray Gobush, Dave Barrett, Steve Clevenger. Meeting called to order at: 17:55 1. Secretary Report: April board meeting minutes were approved. 2. Treasurers Report: Bob Cooper reported on the income & expenses for the remainder of the year. While we have spent more than we took in this year, we did not have to take any money out of savings to cover that shortfall. The board went through the budget for 2008/09 and made some small changes to find what savings they could. Moving on to next year s budget, the board proposed many changes that may take our treasurer a while to work up into a proposed budget for next year. For anyone interested, the details of the discussion are in the full board minutes. 3. Committee Reports: Race: None Reciprocal: Steve reported another reciprocal slip may be available. Membership: We signed up one new member at opening day and had interest by 2 other couples. Three new members were approved. Cruise: Dave B. reported that due too no response from the ranger the clean up the Matia is off and replace it with Bruce s Poker Run. 4. Old Business: a. Further planning around new members will take place at the June Board meeting. b. Community Boating Day at BBCBC has expenses and we need to budget for. c. Swap meet needs more energy could be fund raiser as well but what are the costs? 5. New Business: a. Several problems were reported with information in the Roster. Changes will go in newsletter if people will contact Ray via for corrections. New members should also be introduced in newsletter. Wendy cautioned about personal info on internet (newsletter), so Ray will check with new members about that. 6. Open Discussion: a. Swap meet. Ray suggested put membership table at the swap meet. b. Planning meeting will be June 2 nd at 6pm at Wendy s school again. Items for the agenda include: i. Dues ii. Membership questions iii. Racing iv. Stewardship (BBCBC etc.) Meeting Adjourned at: 20:40 David J. Cunningham, Secretary Nauti Night: May General Meeting The May program will be a little Naughty or Knotty? or perhaps Nautical. Does anyone know how the term Knot became associated with hull speed across the water? We will have Dave Krupka from Samson rope give a short discussion of different ropes and their uses. We will then break into small groups where you will have the opportunity to learn and hone your knot tying skills right down to the bitter end. This will be our traditional CYC May BBQ so bring a protein to cremate and side dish of your choice. We will not have Larry s World Famous Pulled Pork this year, (having nothing at all to do with the swine thing). Matia Clean-up Cancelled The annual clean-up of Matia Island will not be happening this year. Unresponsive communications from the State Parks ranger has caused the annual clean-up to be cancelled. It is possible however that an alternative project with a different organization may happen at a different location. Please watch you for an announcement of details should a new project be found. Styrofoam Regatta June 27 th at Fossil Bay The Styrofoam Regatta will be a joint cruise with the Corinthian Yacht Club, Squalicum Yacht Club and the Power Squadron. We will be providing the necessary components to construct a Styrofoam sailboat. You must use all of the components that come with the kit. You will have approximately two hours to construct a sailboat. The only other materials you can use besides what is provided is duct tape. Be sure to have some available. We would like to know in advance if you planning on attending so we will have enough kits. Each person on your boat can participate with a boat of their own, children and guests encouraged. A race will be held at approximately 3 p.m. And potluck and awards ceremony at 6. Further information and rules will be provided in the kit. This is CYCs 6th time doing the Styrofoam Regatta. We would like to know by the 1st week of June if you planning on attending and how many kits you will need. If you would like your kit prior to leaving which would help us out we can make arrangements to do this. You will receive another around the 1st of June. New this year we will be using a material called blueboard which is more environmentally friendly. For more information please feel free to call one of the cruise captains. We have reserved the new shelter at Fossil Bay for our potluck. Larry and Barbee Folenius Pat and Pete Lamb Cruise Captains

4 Member Profile: Sherry and Bob Jenkins Sherry and Bob Jenkins are anxious to hear from you about the best spots and pitfalls of cruising in the San Juans and environs. They are new members with a new (to them) 30 foot Albin Ballad, theirs since last August. They re still tweaking it Windshift is berthed at the Blaine Harbor. Though Bob doesn t consider himself particularly handy, he finds working on your own boat a great way to really get to know her. Both Bob and Sherry are former computerpeople, and are thus analytical enough to tackle the vagaries of sailing. Sherry hails from Houston and met Bob in Colorado. They did lake sailing there, at Lake Dillon, in a 22 foot boat. It was a start, says Sherry. Onward to San Francisco where they joined a yacht club, and while they didn t have a boat of their own, they crewed a lot on windy San Francisco Bay and took advantage of the sailing opportunities with the club. Bob is considering racing; You learn a lot by racing your boat. Sherry says they need to work on their sailing commands and communication skills onboard, and Bob agrees. A bareboat cruising class equipped them for chartering a boat with the Moorings organization in the British Virgin Islands. The weather was warm, but to tell you the truth, the scenery is prettier around here, and there are more places to go, Bob remarks. (We all know this is one of the best places to boat, don t we? ; ) The Jenkins have been in Bellingham for 4 years, and their daughter Sarah attends Western. How did they end up in Bellingham? We looked for a college town on the coast, and checked out the coffeehouses, and bookstores and Bellingham really has all the things we want, says Sherry. When not doing boating things, the Jenkins enjoy wine tasting, and Bob brews his own beer. He also makes guitars. Sherry is a Master Gardener and is in charge of the family s investing, which funds their retirement. - Lynn Gobush Opening Day Swap Meet Mild weather, overcast skies and light winds, set the tone for this year s Opening Day Swapmeet: Mild it was. Vendors were a blend of CYC members and non-members with an interesting variety of trash and treasures to swap. Probably the best deal of the day was a fairly new and operational radar and GPS which went very reasonably. The editor is still kicking himself for not moving quickly enough to grab that deal. The editor did manage to deal successfully within the concept of a Swap meet by moving enough of his treasures to bring home a nice oil lamp, donate to the BBCBC, treat his wife and himself to a wonderfull breakfast at Squalicum YC and come home with exactly the same amount in his wallet as when he left the house that morning. While no eagles swooped down on unsuspecting seagulls this year, plenty of entertainment was provided by the conversations between sellers and buyers. If a survey had been taken the editor is sure that most everyone would agree that they had a fun and successfull morning. While a successful event, it seems that with a bit more promotion this could change from a mildly successful event to a very successful one. Lets see where we go with this event next year.

5 BACK BEARINGS Another use for the handy little hockey puck Here s one more use for a hockey-puck hand bearing compass the kind you can wear on a lanyard around your neck. It has to do with back bearings. Now we don t hear a lot about back bearings, but they can very useful in areas of currents such as those we experience in the San Juan and Gulf Islands. Let s say you re under way to an anchorage in the Breakfast Group. You ve just rounded the southeast corner of Ham Island where there s a fine lighthouse, and your intended course lies to the west of Egg Island. You draw the line on the chart and note that Hashbrown Reef, submerged three feet, lies about one-third of a mile to starboard of your course. The compass course from Ham Island light, to clear the western edge of Egg Island, is 025 degrees, and there is no danger in the way. Or is there? What if a tidal current is setting southeast at 3 knots? The interesting thing is that even though you are religiously steering 025 degrees, you won t be following the straight line from Ham Island to Egg Island. You ll be set to the east by the current. Deceptively, at every stage of the way, until you hit Hashbrown Reef (bummer!) your course as shown on the compass will be 025 degrees. But there is a very simple way to avoid Hashbrown. Simply take your hand bearing compass and look back at Ham Island light. It should be bearing 205 degrees 180 degrees different from your plotted course bearing. That is known as the reciprocal bearing. If you get set sideways by the current, your back bearing will change immediately. It will alert you to steer more to port, to counteract the current. And as long as your back bearing is 205 degrees (no matter what your ship s heading is) you will be exactly on the course line you drew on the chart, and well clear of Hashbrown Reef. 6 McKee Marine: Caulking the Voids As the editor of the Home Port I have received a variety of s recently. One of those, a request to advertise in our newsletter, led to a very interesting interview with a young man who has a world of experiences and the potential to service the local sailing community. Over coffee at the Bagelry I learned that Ben McKee of McKee Marine would like to fill the void left in Bellingham by the departures of our local rigger and sailmaker. The following is a synopsis of our meeting that morning. At age 15 Ben shipped out as a deckhand on the Lady Washington. 18 years later he has experienced sailing on a variety of tall ships including HMS Bounty (replica), the Californian, the Robert C. Seamen, the Hawaiian Chieftain, Zodiac, and the Corwith Cramer. These experiences along with a stint on an icebreaker provided the days at sea needed for a 100 ton Near Coastal captains license with a full contingent of endorsements. When discussing the differences between sailing modern boats such as dinghies and sport boats with the rigors of a ship, Ben used several interesting analogies to demonstrate his experiences. They re all boats, he stated. While an icebreaker is less sensitive to the wind than a dinghy, the crew of either must always be paying attention to their surroundings. Boats are boxes and you need to keep the water out of the box and the box off of the rocks. In addition, whether 17 feet or 365 a sailboat uses strings to hold up the mast and to keep the spars in place; it s the details that get complicated. He emphasized that many of the new synthetic fibers found on modern boats are being used on the tall ships along with modern mechanical and electrical systems. In 2003 Ben did a yearlong stint at Staaf Sails. There he learned how to use commercial methods to complement the hand skills of sail repair and building that he had developed sailing the big boats. Shortly after Staaf Sails, Ben took on a job in San Francisco as a rigger with the organization that owns Yukon Jack, a Santa Cruz 70, further transitioning his skills from the traditional to hi-tech. Swallowing the anchor a little over a year ago, Ben and his wife now reside in Bellingham. Sailing is still in his blood and his boat, a 40 Cornish Trader, demonstrates his love for the traditional while benefiting from modern technology. While the boat is a traditional European design, the hull is fiberglass and Ben has designed and built a retractable bowsprit so that he can fit the boat into a reasonably sized slip. Having grown up in a crafty family it is only natural that Ben has put the crafts he learned at sea to work as a business working on other folk s boats. Filling the void created by the closing of both Yacht-Tec and Staaf Sails, McKee marine advertises that it is capable of doing anything from a minor repair to a complete refit. Ben demonstrates his capabilities by using a Cape Dory 28 that he recently re rigged as an example. On that boat he redid all the running rigging and wire along with mechanical and electrical installations. The business card for McKee Marine states that Ben works in wire, rope, canvas and wood, but Ben admits that by canvas he means sails and by wood he will defer the fancy stuff to others such as Pete Lamb or John Lopez. Whether installing a chart plotter, replacing the lifelines, re-rigging the shrouds and stays or building (or repairing) the sails Ben sounds like a good local option. As a sailmaker, Ben feels that his strengths lay in cruising sails, primarily Dacron, but repairing a racing sail is definitely a task he is capable of. He is very upfront saying that he will turn away work that he can t do right as it is important to him that people are happy with his work. And on mixing work and sailing Ben states that sailing is good for the soul and his ambition is to help folks feel good while enjoying their toys (boats). McKee Marine Ben McKee, Licensed Master Working in wire, rope, canvas and wood , mckeemarine@gmail.com You may want to keep Ben and McKee Marine in mind if you are in need of a sail repair, some rigging, or other maintenance or installation performed, as with his experience it appears that he could do the job for you. He s local and a sailor. - Mike Reed Boating Center Calls for Experienced Sailors! Bellingham Bay Community Boating Center needs YOU for their Experience Sailing Program. This program partners new or almost new sailors with more experienced sailors (that would be you) for an afternoon on the water. The purpose is to give the novice sailor a chance to learn what sailing is all about and why we love it so. As a volunteer you would use a BBCBC boat to depart from the dock with an individual or group of up to three people. While on the water you would introduce the basics of sailing, including terminology, relationship between wind, water and sail, beginning sail trim and tiller handling. You might even share a few good sea stories. The program runs every Sunday, from 1:00-4:00 p.m., as long as BBCBC has volunteers to help. You can volunteer for one or as many afternoons as your time allows. All volunteers go through a check out process, sign a waiver and are covered under BBCBC insurance.
