The Commodore s Report This never-ending winter has finally, if not reluctantly, wandered off. The ice is out from under the boats and the OYS yard is alive. Launch is a few short weeks away with the sailing seasons coming up fast. In less than a month we ll be floating once again. The OYS event schedule is pretty ambitious this year. Wednesday and Thursday evening racing. An ambitious cruising calendar. The GHYRA race week, the club regatta. Upcoming social events: Open Boats day, Saturday May 31. Sailpast, Saturday June 7. The LSSA regatta the weekend of June 28. Watch the FTD and Windjammer for details on these events. The Commodore s Ball was a great success. My thanks to Laurie Parkhill and to Leslie for organizing this event. A good time was had by all judging from the dance floor an midnight!! We are looking for volunteers for the upcoming events. If you are available and interested, get in touch with the event Chair and have a fun time participating in putting on these events. When you get down to the OYS yard you will see the work that the Town has done in rebuilding the seawall around Oyster Bay. We have found the Town to be open to our concerns and suggestions and have addressed fence line and dock alignment issues. Apparently, the landscaping work will continue into the summer months. A great improvement to the harbour. Be careful in the boat yard. We don t want to see anyone on the sidelines come the sailing season. Also, be respectful of our yard and our waterways. Please don t pollute our yard or our waters! The Town is setting up a hazardous waste collection station in the parking lot. Please use it!! See everyone at launch. Cheers, Bill. The Vice-Commodore s Report The Borrow A Boat crew is getting ready for the 2014 season with plans to make both our Sonars superbly ready, with some polish and paint in the yard in early May. We will also be working on a couple of the old sailing school CL 14s to increase the fleet and accommodate the new members that we met at the boat show. Larry is leading this crew and the enthusiasm is phenomenal. Larry and his crew also took on the Beach Party and it was a great party. Hope you had a chance to enjoy it. This year we will also be hosting the LSSA (Lake Sailing Skiff Association) regatta at OYS. The event takes place over the last weekend in June and will feature a large number of single handed dinghies such as Optis and Lasers as well as other Skiffs including Albacores, CL 14s, 420s Lightenings with maybe even some of our old friends with their Snipes. We will be needing some volunteers for this event, so if you can help us out, Dawn Scott will be coordinating the race committee for OYS, give her a buzz. Warren Hambleton will be running the regatta and will also need lots of volunteers. For Darlene and my part we will be feeding the folks at the regatta, volunteers? Yes Please!! This is a Grand Prix event and should showcase OYS to the racing fraternity but we will have to pull together to make it work. Come on out volunteer, and have some fun. Don 2
The Harbour Report Finally winter seems to be behind us, members are able to enter the OYS yard, remove their winter covers, start to clean their sailboats and some even painting the bottoms. Our 2014 May 3 rd Launch date is just over three weeks away and quickly approaching. There is a lot happening on the 3arbor side, the town of Oakville has delivered our new floating docks and stacked them on the town parking lot just north of OYS. I don t have a confirmed date from the town for launching and installing of the new docks but I am hoping it will be next week. Once I have a date from the town, I will have a FTD send out advising of 3arbor work parties needed to mark the slips, install the dock cleats, water hoses and slip numbers. I want to thank Mel Longo, Andy Whyman, Steve Scott for working with me to disassemble the 12 power pedestals from the floating docks. We delivered them to Teff-Line in Burlington to have them clean, apply a zinc epoxy primer and polyester power coating. This will extend the life of these pedestals for a number of more years. I ve picked up from Teff-Line and I have to say they look great. As part of 3arbor improvements, GFI s will be installed with new galvanized inserts for all the power pedestals. I expect delivery of these from ACE Manufacturing Metals in 2-3 weeks. We will be reusing the existing 30 Amp receptables. We have awarded the wiring of the docks, and power pedestals to Paul Strzelec s company Perfect Electric. Paul has done an amazing job helping Steve Scott and myself in developing a wire plan for the floating docks including planning where to determining which sections of dock for winter storage. Paul and his team will be reassembling the power pedestals including install the new galvanized inserts and existing 30 Amp receptables as well as installing the inserts in the pedestals on the permanent dock. Sign-up for Launch Day shifts is already posted on the OYS website so please sign-up as soon as possible. If anyone has any questions please me or call me on my cellular phone ( ). That s about all. Enjoy working on you boats and see you around the club. Graham The Property Director s Report So far its been a pretty awful late winter and early spring, but despite the weather its time to start seriously thinking about the up-coming season and the work that will be required around our club house and yard. This year the big activity is to paint the white trim around the clubhouse, a couple of years ago the blue siding was painted, now its time to undertake the trim which is looking pretty sad. Some of the trim can only be painted with special equipment required to access the roof and gables. To avoid the cost of renting this equipment, finding a licensed operator etc we have decided to hire a professional industrial painter who has his own equipment and is fully insured. The contractor will paint all trim above the level of the eaves trough leaving us with 37 windows to paint inside and out, 12 doors to paint inside and out, the Crows Nest stairs and railing and about 700 square feet of soffit to wash and paint. At a guess I estimate this will take hours of labour including clean-up So, fair warning, we will be looking for 10 or so volunteers starting in late April early May. Our goal is to have the clubhouse looking its best in time for sailpast. Look for the volunteer sign up to start soon. 3
In addition the door lock keypads will have their access code changed at the end of March when your membership renewal is required. When you pay your 2014 dues you will be advised of the new access number. Oakville Yacht Squadron prides its self in following clean marine guidelines. Our club does not offer a hazardous waste disposal system nor does the town at 16 Mile Creek. When you have hazardous materials (old batteries, used oil or antifreeze) you must take them yourself to a hazardous waste disposal site the closest is at Bronte Harbour. DO NOT LEAVE YOUR HAZARDOUS WASTE BESIDE OUR GARBAGE CANS remember we have video surveillance! Our disposal company will not take your hazardous waste, neither will your Property Director! Peter Urwin The Cruising Report Pre-sign Up The pre-sign up for our roster of cruises this summer had a great response. Each Full Member could sign up for up to two cruises (not counting being a cruise captain on one). The number of spaces in each cruise was limited to 15. Three of the cruises (RCYC, MCC, and ABYC) were over-subscribed. The first cruise of the season was to Lake Shore Yacht Club and no one joined. Because of this and a potential conflict with another event, we are going to cancel the cruise. We have cruise captains for all but one cruise. Thank you. I am still looking for a crusie captain for the RHYC cruise. Please contact me if you are interested. I shall be having a brief meeting with cruise captains on May 13 at 7:00 in the main hall. Here is the list of cruises, cruise captains and themes: Date Cruise To Captains Theme June14 EYC Alain and Diane TBD Thevinen June 21 RHYC TBD TBD June 28 (long HYC Joop & Beatrice Ten Canada Day Thye, Harry & Maureen Cook July 5 MCC Janet and Stephen Jimmy Buffet MacDonald July 26 CBYC Tor and Erika Johansson Northern European, Scandinavian Taste Aug 2 (long RCYC (long Ed Anderson & Dee Taylor Cruise to the South Pacific and Beautiful Bali Aug 30 (long ABYC Bill and Leslie Frenke Commodore Cruise Sept 13 No where Maurice and Linda Stevens Cruise To Nowhere TDB = to be determined 4
The sign-up for cruises will re-open about a week before the cruises. Active Captain I am encouraging members who go on cruises to join Active Captain ( a free website that has a number of helpful features that I would like to try for our cruises. It is a web site for boats with a lot of helpful components, but the two that I would like to use are a user group (Oakville Yacht Club Cruises) to communicate for each cruise (like face book) and eboat Card which will show the real-time postion on a map of members when going on a cruise via iphone, etc. Joel Hundert Cruising Director The Racing Report 1. Race Volunteer Signup In 2014, each boat participating in the race program, will be required to supply crew for a minimum of 1 race in the season. You can sign up online for your desired date until the end of April. Following that a date will be assigned to each registered yacht. There will be a penalty in points to be outlined in the Sailing Instructions if this requirement is not met! 2. Protest Committee Signup Also a requirement! Select your date of preference here Membership Directory Fields have been added for input of your Sail Number, PHRF Certificate Number and Ratings. Please take a moment to update once your ratings are confirmed/determined for the 2014 season. The House Director s Report Thank goodness for spring! OYS members are starting to emerge from 5ibernation and it s great to see them at the club. Thursday pub nights are hopping once again. The Seaview ladies resumed their Thursday afternoon meet in March and I hear they had a lovely afternoon. Next Thursday is Euchre night and I m looking forward to a good turnout. Friday night potluck dinners are an adventure in dining. We ve had great dishes to sample and no one goes away hungry. Actually, they don t go away right after dinner as the movie starts at 8. This month is Mystery month and we re looking forward to seeing a great classic, Wait Until Dark, which is next week s feature. Even though that will be Good Friday, we re going ahead as usual. FYI...We will not be having dinner & a movie the night before launch, as I will be home preparing my spreadsheets. The robotics team made good use of the clubhouse during March break in preparation for their first competition of the year. Some of us were able to watch them practice and it was amazing. What a talented group of young people. I ll share with you an update I received: 5
Last weekend we were in competitions in Waterloo, we came back from North Bay last night, and we are heading out to Calgary this coming weekend. In Waterloo we won the highest award that we have ever received the prestigious Chairman s Award, given to the team that makes the most effective contribution to prompting science and technology in its community and promoting strong core values At North Bay we won the Entrepreneurship Award for having the best planning functions and one of our lead mentors won an award for her long standing efforts on our team, and next comes Calgary! We have now gained eligibility to go to the World Championships in St Louis in April, so we are scrambling to organize that trip. The ability to practice driving and sort out the kinks in our robot are essential to good performance on the field and we could not have done this without the support we receive from OYS. The school March break typically occurs a couple of weeks before our first competition but during March break the school is closed to us so we cannot practice. Being able to use your Clubhouse at this time is essential to our success and we are most grateful. On several occasions we have been able to tell Mayor Burton, and Town Councilor David Gittings of the valuable assistance you provide to the Oakville Trafalgar High School Robotics team. I hope the town officials remember that when negotiating our lease Regardless, it s a wonderful opportunity to be of assistance to this hardworking, resourceful group of students. A note of thanks to Peter Urwin for taking good care of the building and grounds throughout the winter! And to Richard Marais for diligently cleaning up after us. I look forward to seeing you in the yard as we prepare for that most happy day, Launch! Thank you to those eager individuals who have already signed up for their shift. The others had better hurry or their preferred shifts may be filled. As we head into our sailing season, I wish you all fair winds for cruising or racing, whichever is your passion. If there is anything I can do to enhance your use of the club, please let me know. I am open to suggestions and encourage you to make your wishes known. I could use help over the summer with TgiF, bottle returns, shopping and other things, so if you are interested, let me know. Cheers! Edie Sandford, House Director 6
